Health › Re: Mosquitoes Are Our Friends, Stop Killing Them - UNILORIN Professor Decries by bigfather(m): 9:51am On Jun 06, 2017 |
EDonHappen: A Professor of Entomology at the University of Ilorin, Adeolu Ande, has decried killing mosquitoes, saying the insects are friends to humans that deserved to be properly managed.
Ande made the statement on Monday in Ilorin in a paper he presented at a public seminar organised by the university.
In his paper with the title “Consider the ways of Ants and be Wise,” the entomologist described insects as the “most successful and influential group’’ of organisms in the biosphere.
He said that humans had a lot to learn from insects in order to be wise.
“Human life is beset with inevitable associations with insects that have over the years influenced human destiny positively and negatively.
“Negative influences, such as disease transmission, crop losses, food spoilage, economic losses and nuisance value caused by less than 5 per cent of insect species have been exaggerated by man.
He said that positive influences of insects are not unappreciated and downplayed.
He listed some of them to include: pollination of flowers, waste recycling and sustenance of the ecosystem.
Others, he said, include source of silk, shellac, cochineal, therapeutic agents, aesthetics, biological control agents and food source.
The don said that man deliberately misunderstood the role of mosquitoes and frequently described them as causing the diseases they transmit.
He said: “in the actual sense, mosquitoes are equally sick but inadvertently and unwillingly convey pathogens that are the real causal agents of these diseases.
“The female mosquito could be described as an example of a true mother who is forced to undertake suicide mission in its bid to provide for its unborn children.
“The adult female mosquitoes have exceptional value for child raising hence the level of commitment and risk they take on the mission that entails decision between life and death.
“The after effect of this commitment is a well thought out plan that forestalls most of the factors that may stand in the way of raising good children.
“I am sure most human females will not take comparable decision in the face of similar attendant risks.
“It is however certain that children born after well thought out and risky conditions are better posited for quality living than those produced carelessly.
Ande said that mosquitoes had proved over the years that they are our friends and allies, adding that if we like them or not, they would exist and continue to source blood from humans.
The professor called for improvement in Zoology curriculum to ensure better focus on organisms that feature prominently around man.
He said that zoologists were expected to be the foster parents of animals in the Zoo, adding that they should be familiar with their needs and their health status

AdoraAmadi: This seems to be a good year for Nigerian OAP, Toke Makinwa, as she just bought her dream car ‘a Range Rover’. This is coming after the OAP’s book ‘On Becoming’ became a best seller.
Here’s what Toke Makinwa wrote, as she showed off her new ride;
“I’m learning to breathe again, learning to let go and completely let God with everything (not some but all), I’m learning to appreciate my journey, learning to accept God’s blessings without feeling guilty, undeserving or scared of what may come next
I’m learning to trust again, learning to take better care of myself, ( I bought myself the car of my dreams and I make no apologies for it) “Thank you Jesus”….. I’m learning to not be so hard on me even when I fall. I’m learning about life each day, learning to see beauty in everyone and every situation. I am human, I am learning, I am becoming #OnBecominginSA“

Nnamddi: Mrs Kemi Adeosun, Minister of finance, has said, she 'thinks' Nigeria is getting of recession.
Nigeria's economy officially entered recession last year and with Nigeria's President, Muhammadu Buhari's ill health, there is no sign of Africa's most populous country getting out of it.
Nigerians are suffering the effects of the economic crisis with prices of goods and services almost increasing by more than 300% in the markets.
Speaking with ChannelsTV on Friday, June 2nd, Kemi Adeosun said, statistics showed Nigeria is getting out of recession.
In her words; "I think we are getting out of recession. All the statistics seems to suggest that but more importantly, we are getting on the path of growth that will be sustainable so we can see a future for Nigeria. So I think it is getting better. We inherited a lot of problems. The Nigerian economy didn’t just need a little bit of fix here and there but needed radical surgery and to heal it will take a little bit longer” she said

Travel › Re: 5 Ways To Overcome Flight Turbulence Anxiety by bigfather(m): 1:53pm On Jun 02, 2017 |
Opinionated: The frustrating thing about flight turbulence is how suddenly they occur, completely without warning. Thankfully, there are ways to overcome the anxiety that comes when these sudden flight turbulence hits. Jumia Travel, the leading online travel agency, shares 5 ways to overcome the anxiety that comes with flight turbulence.
Increase Your Pool of Knowledge
Fear is intensified when the object of your fear remains a mystery. Therefore, it’s important you avoid ‘what if?’ thoughts by reading up on flight turbulence, its causes, potential dangers and the likely risks associated with it. Know all you can about planes and how they are designed to handle turbulence. When you understand the phenomenon, it’ll be much easier to manage and overcome.
Remind Yourself That Fear is Separate From Danger
The fact that you’re afraid doesn’t actually mean you’re in danger, you need to be able to separate the two to successfully overcome anxiety. Remind yourself that feeling anxious doesn’t mean you’re in danger, it just means you’re feeling anxious. You’re safe even if you’re feeling intense anxiety. Besides, why remain negative when you can be positive. Stop fueling your fears and anxieties.
Try To Outsmart Anxiety
Anxiety tricks your mind into thinking you’re in danger when you’re perfectly safe. Following your emotions at that point will only reinforce your anxiety and very likely make you hysterical. As a rule, you should learn to do the opposite of what those anxious feelings are telling you to do (even when you’re still feeling anxious). You’ll be surprised at how effective this will be in helping to overcoming anxiety.
Figure Out What Soothes You When Anxious
Is it talking to someone? Is it reading a book? Is it listening to music? Is it praying? Is it meditating? Figure it out. Once you know what soothes you when you’re anxious, you can do that thing to help calm you in those times.
Be Patient
Over time, you’ll actually get used to flight turbulence and remain unfazed when they occur. Besides, after a while you’ll eventually get tired of jumping in fear at every flight turbulence; you’ll get tired of being fearful. Be patient with yourself because every flight provides you with an opportunity to make the next one easier (if it helps and you’re the religious type, you can pray as often as you can for a safe flight and commit it to the hands of the One you trust). Your brain will eventually become less sensitized to the triggers that set you off and flight turbulence will cease to become an anxiety trigger for you.

Politics › Re: Governors Accuse Jonathan’s Govt Of Importing Substandard Rice During Elections by bigfather(m): 10:05am On Jun 02, 2017 |
kahal29: The Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) thursday expressed concern over the substandard rice imported into the country during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan, lamenting that the rice is sometimes harmful to the human system.
They said huge consignment of rice still finding its way into the market was imported into Nigeria since 2014 when the Jonathan administration issued a very liberal import licence regime to its election financiers who were able to bring a substantial quantity of rice into the country using a waiver from the presidency at the time.
The 36 governors spoke in a statement issued by the Head, Media and Public Affairs of the NGF Abulrazaque Bello- Barkindo, which called on the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to expeditiously take measures to arrest the situation.
The governors claimed that while some bulk of the consignment was stale, others were either rejected in other countries or had overstayed in various warehouses before they found their way into Nigeria through the activities of some unscrupulous elements.
While summoning the customs to shed light on the matter, the governors expressed concern that Nigerians were either falling sick or losing their lives to the consumption of these substandard produce even though some states have commenced elaborate efforts to produce rice in commercial quantity with a view to halting Nigeria’s over-reliance on staples that can be produced locally.
The Governors, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) frowned at the situation where Nigerians snubbed locally-produced commodity in preference for foreign ones which were most of the time, stale, contaminated or even fake.
Meanwhile, in a brief to the governors’ forum, the NCS Comptroller-General through the Deputy Comptroller-General, Dangaladima Aminu, stated that although there is an upsurge in the smuggling of rice through the nation’s land borders, there has been no alteration to the prohibition on the importation of rice through Nigeria’s land borders and that any quantity of rice which finds its way into Nigeria through land routes was smuggled.
He noted that rice was usually smuggled into the country through unauthorised border routes which span more than 4,000km and that the smugglers were aided by border communities who alternated between motorcycles, canoes and rafts to smuggle contraband rice into the country.
Aminu added: “Your excellencies, it may interest you to note that a motorcycle can make up to 30 trips with six 50kg bags of rice per night depending on the distance and when the border communities are not smuggling the produce themselves, they are aiding or providing cover for smugglers.”
He, however, added that rice merchants had recorded huge losses as a result of seizures by the customs. He disclosed that in 2014 customs seized 12,000 metric tons of the commodity, 4,503 tonnes in 2015 and 14,000metric tons in 2016.
Aminu informed the governors that the customs “takes the issue of smuggling of rice seriously, having identified the danger posed by it to the economic well-being and health hazards it constitutes to the Nigerian people.”
