Business › Re: CBN To Embrace Open Banking System by bigtt76(f): 4:36pm On Apr 28, 2018 |
Another way of telling us they will soon start regulating it via one of their numerous and useless policies THEWRITERSMIND: As the banking system moves to deliver quality services to consumers in the 21st century driven by new technological advancements, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has declared its interest in Open Banking System (OBS) which grants bank customers easy access to their data and opening the financial system to applications and other services.
This was disclosed by the deputy director, Banking and Payment System, CBN, Mr. Musa Itopa Jimoh who represented the apex while speaking on ‘How regulations will impact consumers bahaviour in open banking era’ at the Ennovators Breakfast Series in Lagos, a forum that attracted many industry stakeholders and organized by eMaginations. Jimoh said that “CBN is looking at how to raise the standard for all banks and fintechs to plug in.” According to Jimoh, open banking system will have great impacts on the banking system customers, noting that banks that will drive the economy are those with quality data and that uses it creatively. Open banking system is operational in Europe as Second Payment Services Directive (PSD2). Similar other implementations are ongoing in Hong Kong and Australia, and new digital finance ecosystem such as WeChat and Alipay are emerging in China based on data sharing capabilities.
The apex bank deputy director also disclosed that “CBN is working behind the scene to create Payment Service Directive (PSD3).” Highlighting the benefit, he said the banks will be able to ensure the customers based on available data, which allows the banks to understanding the behaviour of the customers. One of the restriction to financial inclusion is high cost of service.’’ According to him, “banks are sitting on huge amount of data but they are not doing anything about it.
Banks have the data of all the drivers in Nigeria since all drivers renew their license in the banks. Disruption will happen in the banking system which will make bank customers to demand for certain service and banks will be forced to offer the service.” Jimoh said that a bank can use data to determine customers’ behaviour in order to understand what kind of service to offer to them. “That the banks should be able to indemnify the customers based on available data, which allows the banks to understanding the behaviour of the customers,” he said, adding that the banks need to come up with a standard for open APIs.
He said that one of the deterrents to financial inclusion is high cost of service, stating that the CBN is looking at how to raise the standard for all banks and fintechs to plug in, adding that data privacy and confidentiality is also very important. He assured that the before the year ends, the apex bank will see how to engender open banking initiative. In a related development, a group of top banking industry professionals and FinTech companies in Nigeria have established Open Banking Nigeria with the goals to promote, develop and implement a common standard for Application Programming Interfaces (APIs).
A statement from the organisation started that underwriting models are emerging from access to alternative source of data like mobile phone usage in East Africa. In the United States, large banks are striking data sharing deal with individual partners in a departure from aggregator model. While stressing the mission of the organisation, Ayodeji Olowe, spokesperson for Open Banking Nigeria, said the objective is to rally the industry to adopt the open banking model so that the industry can improve customer experience, “develop new revenue streams, and build a sustainable service model for traditionally underserved markets.”
He said Open Banking Nigeria will rally the industry to develop processes and governance underpinning the technical connections. “We will assist banks and Fintechs alike to position themselves for success in a new environment and to anticipate the likely customer impacts,” he added.

Just negodu these men! Don't they know they should be the ones to be out first? Useless people exlinkleads: The former Chief Whip of the upper legislative chamber and one of the leaders of Action Democratic Party, ADP, Senator Rowland Owie, has accused the President Muhammadu Buhari-led executive arm of government of carrying out the attack on Senate where the mace was stolen.
Speaking in an interview with Daily Sun, Owie condemned the invasion of the senate by thugs, alleging that the disgraceful act had the support of security agents. The former lawmaker also accused the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, of not promoting democracy with its acts. He called on the National Assembly to start the process of President Buhari’s impeachment immediately for spending over 469 million dollars on helicopter without approval from the National Assembly.
In his words;
“It is a desecration of the order; all those that were involved certainly committed treason. When I was looking at the newspaper, I saw the vehicle that was used.
“I asked one of my sons the name of the vehicle and he said it was ‘Infiniti’, that the car cost almost 80million. That type of vehicle is not owned by a street hawker, it is not owned by a teacher, it must be owned by a top government official. "For thugs to go through the well fortified gates of the National Assembly and then enter into the chamber of the senate where there is electronic check, it means that there was total collaboration with the security agents. From all indications what happened was supported by the executive of this country.
“For them to be able to leave the National Assembly with the mace it is a shame on this nation, it is a shame on the security agencies. It means that all the security agents were aware and they were told to stand down. "Police at the assembly are not less than 100 officers, so I don’t see how thugs could have breached the security if it wasn’t planned. All those involved should be brought to justice.
“If Nigerians don’t wake up it will be a disaster. This APC government headed by Muhammadu Buhari is not people-oriented. It is unfortunate that there are very good people inside it but they are quiet. "And when you are quiet in the face of injustice it means that the individual doesn’t have the fear of God in him. My colleagues in the National Assembly have not lived up to expectation in checking the excesses of the executive.
“The legislature is the most important tool in democracy; the legislature should endeavor to check the executive. There have been a lot of irresponsible actions taken by the executive which the senate has failed to address.” Asked what he specifically would you have loved to see the National Assembly do to the executive, Senator Owie added, “How can the National Assembly which has the authority of confirmation of appointees reject the statutory appointment of an official and then the executive goes behind to retain such person?
“How can the executive neglect the rejection of the legislature? If the Senate was not sparing the rod, the moment the executive went ahead to confirm the appointment they would have removed the allocation meant for the particular office or position, so that if the chairman works and is paid, whoever that paid him would have committed an impeachable offence.
“The executive in this government has looked down on the National Assembly time and time again. How can the president spend over 469 million dollars on helicopter without approval from the National Assembly? The Senate should immediately send Buhari a message and begin impeachment procedure against him.”

Bhet why naaa Nwaforj44: Diamond Bank Plc has signed a share sale and purchase agreement with a member of GFG Alliance, for the disposal of its entire shareholding in its international subsidiary, Diamond Bank (UK) Plc.
The disposal was in line with the bank’s objective of streamlining its operations to focus resources on the significant opportunities in the Nigerian retail banking market.
The transaction followed the bank’s divestment from its West African business, Diamond Bank S.A., which was completed in November 2017.
A statement posted on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) website explained that the Bank and GFG Alliance were committed to, and are pursuing a quick completion of the transaction subject to approval of the Financial Conduct Authority and Prudential Regulation Authority who regulate banking business in the United Kingdom.
Commenting on the transaction, Diamond Bank’s CEO Uzoma Dozie said: “Diamond Bank’s strategic objective is to be the fastest growing, and most profitable technology-driven retail banking franchise in Nigeria.
“This strategic intent requires the bank to optimise the use of its resources which means, where necessary, divesting from its non-core assets, and focusing on the priority area, namely Nigerian retail banking.”
“The bank has laid the foundation for growth in Nigeria with acquisition of over 15 million customers, many of whom are owning bank accounts for the first time.
“The Nigerian market has vast potential due to its strong fundamentals, including millions of people who are either underbanked or unbanked, and changing lifestyles that favour the use of mobile devices to complete multiple financial transactions at the consumer’s convenience.
“This is also underpinned by significant economic potential driven by an entrepreneurial spirit, and a growing culture of innovation. “Moreover, by harnessing technology and fostering a digitally led approach, thebank will have further positive impact on the overall development of the financial system, and the Nigerian economy in general,” he added.
According to Dozie, the sale of the international subsidiaries were not expected to cause service disruptions for the bank’s customers located around the world as they can continue to enjoy enhanced and convenient banking services through the bank’s digital channels.

Wahlahi ....we play too much in this country ....imagine all the dependencies. How does one without a National Voters Card get National ID or vice versa? FSolar: Lol, we punish ourselves too much in this country. The government only adds the icing. To process National ID, you need to have a form of National validated ID (voters card, Int’l Passport, Driver’s licence etc) + BVN. To get a validated ID or BVN, you need to also have a VALID validated ID.
There is no way any of it is going to be easy looking at it all through. I learnt the slip can be collected same day but you’d be told to come back in 1week or 2.

Exactly! Look at me just waiting anxiously for script to be remarked ....if she fails, she will now come and say say its not her handwriting GeneralOjukwu: From the 2 audio clips, I can bet my 3rd testicle that she actually failed the course.
She should tread carefully. YES she failed, YES, Mr Lecturer requested for 5 rounds.THAT is a strong case already.
If the scripts are re-marked & she truly failed, her credibility would be damaged. If I was the lecturer, I would even ask them to dig up her undergrad scripts if she graduated from OAU
Break-down for the IQ-challenged :
1. She has a strong case. But she didn't pass the course.
2. If she had passed it truly, she wouldn't have gone to the trouble of recording the audio tape
3. She is now calling for the scripts at this stage. If she actually failed,it would damage her credibility.
4. I am not supporting the lecturer.
