Afam4eva: In NIgeria, it's about who you know. Even if you graduated from Osu or Aba polytechnic and you know someone, you'll definitely get a job ahead of someone from Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Cornell, John Hopkins etc. That is exactly one of the main problems. Why pay a masters or phd degree holder peanuts for his knowledge that will bring in millions to the company? they know that and they decide to exploit them. Later everyone will complain of brain-drain. when the most competent people who have the chance to improve things are being lured away when some goat with an ond and a letter from the vice president gets the job over u. To make things worse now, i hear the government here in the USA is trying to make things in such a way that those foreign students who are trained are able to get good jobs. That way they will be able to apply their knowledge gained from schools to their jobs. why cant we do the same thing? why offer someone someone 30k a month and employ a take-it-or-leave-it stance? that is what is killing nigeria today. |
Olodostein: Until we fundamentally change our value system. Insanity continues.Me says until when we stop all the favouritism, all the employing people based on who you know and not by merit, until they stop putting a local farmer where a skilled doctor should be. |
Bro, don't feel sad or upset about it. I was in your shoes too. I came to the USA to get a masters degree in my field(Computer Science) hoping that when I finally go back to naija, i will get a very good job somewhere. Imagine my dismay when after a whole year, I didn't get anything. Everyone was like come back today, come back tomorrow,, we are not employing, blah blah blah. Even at one place i had an interview, the guy saw my Degree certificate and my CV, and the first thing he asked me was - "Are u sure this your Masters is not an online degree?". I wanted to yank him by his stupid afro and tear out a few hairs. At the end of the day the stupid company told me if they are going to employ me, they cannot pay me more than 70k. i told them to take their job and shove it where the sun don't shine. After a while i just decided to pack myself and my newly wedded wife and head back here. Back to the topic at hand, like you said, no knowledge earned is lost. with the way things are going on in Nigeria today, the best bet is for you to set up something with the knowledge you've gained from your overseas study. You cannot compare yourself with someone who has the same degree from a nigerian university. the difference is very clear. once you start something, and with your knowledge and connections, and if you run things the way you were taught and trained, u will make it. The thing about Nigeria is once something can sell, u will profit alot from it. forget about government jobs. They are just an "aside". Focus on being an EMPLOYER of labour, not an EMPLOYEE where one yeye oga who doesn't even have a school leavers certificate will be insulting you. |
u forgot to add that tall guy with the punk hair cut and funny-looking french suit always acting as a police inspector. |
I went to camp to see if what they said was true. . . .besides I wanted to see if i could hook someone who wasn't from my tribe as i had gotten tired of dating yoruba chicks after three tries. . . .I met a young Igala babe there. Today she is my wife and we have a beautiful daughter. |
Heat wave? It's freezing cold where i am. |
Bawss1: Americans and guns. This will certainly be their undoing. It is already their undoing. They now have no control over it. The number of gun-related cases these days is alarming. Just last week a rapper was shot and killed on The Strip in Las Vegas over an arguement in a parking lot. Killed two other people in a taxi too. |
And they wonder why people don't take Arican-American's seriously in US. Why don't they complain when they flaunt what they got in all those music videos on MTV? "does not exude the true beauty of African-American women" my jugger-nuts. |
kpolli: A PHd is only useful if your going to lectureHere is one of them. |
drzed: @ballabriggs and Ajanlekoko: Well said guys.GBAM. Well said. If people don't educate them they will never learn. But what else do u expect when that's exactly what they are being fed. People in Nigeria look at Phd as a "pali" for those who want to lecture only, they never look at it in a larger view. To me, Phd in whatever field you are shows u know ur stuff and u can't be messed up anyhow. |
drzed: It is only in places like Nigeria (where people are allergic to progress) that PhD is synonymous to lecturing.Chief, if u were a woman i would have flown where u are and married u on the spot!!!!! The problem with majority of nigerians today is that we are ignorant. Very ignorant and myopic. The levell of decay and rot in our system has sooooo corroded our collective thinking that everyone wants to "eat" fast. They want to make millions at the drop of a hat. If u ask the average nigerian what he/she wants to do, it is either a doctor, and engineer, banker, etc. All fields that bring in money. they want to drive the flashiest cars, go to choice places, live in houses with 50+ rooms. But to get there, they will want the shortest and easiest route. That's how myopic we are. Getting a phd is not only about going to lecture as u said, but our mindsets are automatically programmed to that. It is a default setting in our minds. that's why people dont want to go that far into academics, earning phds. I know so many companies today that do not require anything less than a phd for their recruitments. Here in the US, once u have a phd, u can attain certain places where a masters degree holder can't reach. Phd no be moinmoin. One ignoramus said it earlier that Phd is just a paper that shows that u are an over-sabi and u can't do anything meaningful with it. Why in that case did u go to school? People are just ignorant. pure and simple. With this rate, once the generations of real lecturers leave and we have no one to teach future generations, with everyone busy making money here and there, we will see where we will land. If education is a problem, then try ignorance for a change. |
Guys lets be a bit humorous. even the Site is just a humor site. Click the link and u will see. Look at these other links too. http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/borowitzreport/ |
The last Inferior Chickens match i watched was in 2008 where Ghana came from behind to beat Nigeria 2-1. I was even bribed to watch that match. It is pretty obvious why i never watched any of the matches since and even before. |
Buying a flooded car is usually a delicate decision and u have to be very careful, but atimes u could be lucky. The last car I bought, a toyota camry 2007, was a flooded vehicle ffrom hurricane Irene, but till today thhe guy I sold it to has not made any complaints. If u have access to the car u want to buy, consider these following points - - usually if it is a fresh water car, it is stated. That is usually at an advantage cos freshwater is not as bad as sea water - before startinng the car, check the engine. Does it seem as if water entered it? Did the water get to the ECU(brain box)? Are all the fluids(engine oil, power steering fluid, etc) clear? - does it drive? Make sure it runs and drives. - watch out for funny odors in the car. I hope this helps. |
When u said coke I thot u meant crack coke aka cocaine. Both are bad for u. U need to start drinking good ol' H2O. |
Buy was told to write "i will not throw paper planes in class" on the board 500 times as a punishment. here's his response - #include <stdio.h> int main (void) { int count; for (count=1; count <=500; count++) printf("I will not throw paper planes in class" ;return 0; } Nice try though. Smart kid. |
This stewpid man shld shut his stinking pie hole up. He never predicts anything good in his life. That's why people don't take Nigerians serious. |
I don't usually shed tears, but the day my mum in law died in that Dana crash, I bawled like a baby. Even till date I shed a tear or two when I think of her, cos I just had her as a mother in law for a month. |
I think the OP is a security guard.
Shenez: Op, is a security guard. So if u guys post topics concerning the plights of dogs in mama calabar's food joint, does that make both of u dogs? |
I noticed these days, especially here in Abuja, that people show no regard whatsoever to security men stationed at places. These men are there to protect and maintain order, but u see some pompous elements of the society insult them as if they are nothing but fat flies and beggars. These men are trying to earn their daily pay to put bread on their tables, but the way people insult them for carrying out their duties baffles and puts a lot to mind. Why do people look down on security men/women? Aren't they humans as well? Why do some people behave so callous and rude to them? |
This "staff" idea came about during the Civil war. Back then it was a rule by the government that commercial vehicles provide free transport service to serving forces on display of their I'd cards, but trust Naijas and awuf, they still claim that till date. |
I charge the battery for ages, and it discharges under 2 hrs even when I don't use it. |
For the past few days I've been dreaming of these particular girls. The first one I had an affair with when I was in the US. I really did care about this girl but I didn't luv her enough to marry her. Earlier last month I got back in touch with a friend of mine. We were very close when we were in school as she was dating one of my friends. I knew she was in Abuja but I didn't want to reconnect with her as I had just got marrried early this year, but I gave her a call on her bday. She told me she knew I was in Abuja and she had been waiting for me to have called her. She was even angry I didn't invite her to my wedding. Anyways to cut a long story short, we kept in touch and we saw each other regularly, and we were getting closer. I think she too had beun to fall for me as things she began to hint - I won't be there for her anytime my wife is around, she really appreciates me for things I do for her, etc. She even told me once she needed a massage from me. Now of recent, I've had two dreams of sleeping with this girl,n most recent one last nite, and it was so real. I don't want to cheat on my wife but these dreams are beginning to bother me. I'm going back to the US soon and something tells me I'll bump into my old flame again. |
I lost my mother-in-law on that flight, and what I have to say is these people are making things hard for the victims families to claim. They are totally inhuman. It is just the stvpid country we are in. No amount of money can bring the dead back, but they are just making things difficult for everyone. For hopw much? |
What's it with this sudden craze about being the first or second to post on a topic? Is there something I'm missing out on? Pertaining the topic, number 1 applies to me to a T. ![]() |
