PoliticsRe: Malnutrition Rate Alarming In Parts Of Nigeria – Group by Blue3k2(op): 4:23pm On May 14, 2017
Anyone find it weird that the most effected region is NW and NC. I thought it would be the NE. It's the same way when the UN poverty stats came out NE had Lowe rate than NW. I hear lots of people claim the regions proves all the food and the region has best food secruity. What's up with these stats then.
PoliticsMalnutrition Rate Alarming In Parts Of Nigeria – Group by Blue3k2(op): 3:49pm On May 14, 2017
Nigerians are seriously experiencing malnutrition in some parts of the country, a civil society group has alerted.

The rate of the scourge is far more alarming than the attention being paid to it, Beatrice Eluaka, the project director of CS-SUN, a Civil Society Organisation and member of the PACFaH coalition, warned in Kaduna on Tuesday.

Ms. Eluaka gave the warning at a workshop held to highlight focus areas where media reportage is lacking on health/nutrition challenges and funding gaps in Nigeria.

Ms. Eluaka noted that the Nigeria demographic and health survey (NDHS) 2013 reported the national prevalence of stunting at 37%, underweight 29%, and wasting 18% in children under five years old.

According to the survey, however, the worst hit regions in Nigeria for stunting are the northwest and northcentral which have 54.8% and 29.3% respectively.
Children in the two zones also suffer most wasting, with 27.1% in the northwest and 19.5% in northeast; as well as the most underweight with 30.8% recorded in the northeast and 47.4% in the northwest.

CS-SUN organised the three-day capacity building workshop and field visit for journalists from the print, mass and online media.

The event brought together journalists from across the country to brainstorm on how the mass media can be used as a platform for advocating scaling up of funding for nutrition by government at the national and state levels.

Nutrition officers of Nassarawa, Kaduna and Niger made presentations at the workshop on their various states’ responses to nutrition issues.

The Kaduna state representative, Jane Gwani, said the commitment by the state governor, Nasir El-Rufai, to counterpart funding with the UNICEF has led to more money being made available to address nutrition issues.
Her Niger state counterpart, Amina Isah, however, noted that her state has moved from medium burden to high burden state, which has made it a priority state for nutrition intervention in Nigeria.

Nasarawa State Nutrition Officer, Hajiya Amina, said her state had a standing committee on food and nutrition. She said the state government also had a specific budget line for nutrition, though no budgetary release had been made.

In his presentation, the programme manager of CS-SUN described the Federal Ministry of Health expenditure on nutrition as abysmal, citing an example of a paltry N25 million spent in 2012 and N1.9 billion in the 2017 proposed budget.

As part of the event, the journalists had a site visit to Community-based Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) and Out-Patient

Therapeutic (OTP) programme sites in Zaria LGA of Kaduna state to asses firsthand the malnutrition cases and the level of response from the state government with support from partners.

At the OTP site, clients were seen coming to receive the ready-to-use therapeutic foods (RUFT) for their children. The officer in charge of the site at Makama Abbas Primary Health Centre, Mariam Ibrahim, said they have between 10-20 new cases teveryday, while also noting that the state was committed to the provision of the supplements.

She however decried the seasonal fluctuation in the programme before the statutory eight weeks is complete. On the seasonal fluctuation, she said the number usually increases during farming season as the people plant whiled the number drastically drops during harvest.

She said since the facility does not have the capacity to admit severe cases, such were referred to a close by site that has the capacity.

In the course of the visit, a new case was brought in which was referred but the mother refused going, saying she needed permission from her husband who was not around although her three- year-old child was dying.

Ms. Mariam said such was a regular occurrence at the site.

According to an official, Nigeria would require $912 million over five years to mitigate malnutrition.

TravelRe: Why Domestic Flights In Nigeria Dropped 33 Per Cent In First Quarter – Operator by Blue3k2(op): 1:52pm On May 14, 2017
The airpeace boss also listed inadequate navigation aids along with daytime restrictions at airports as issue along with everything written here. All these airlines are clamoring for national carrier. They also feel business environment is bad which I can understand.

If the they could buy jet fuel from local refineries that would help. Maybe Dangote plans to supply them I don't know.
TravelWhy Domestic Flights In Nigeria Dropped 33 Per Cent In First Quarter – Operator by Blue3k2(op): 1:40pm On May 14, 2017
The Station Manager, Azman Air, Abdulahi Saroke, has attributed the drop in domestic flight operations in the first quarter to the six weeks closure of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

Mr. Saroke, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday in Abuja, said there was a sharp drop in passenger traffic at Kaduna between March 8 and April 17.

He explained that many domestic airlines reduced their frequency to Kaduna airport because of the reduction in traffic during the period.

Mr. Saroke said that some routes were less busy, adding that many passengers also rescheduled their movements either to travel by road or suspended their movement during the period.

“Why we have a sharp drop in the first quarter is mainly because of the closure of Abuja airport which happens to be the second busiest airport in Nigeria.

“When Abuja was shut and operations were transferred to Kaduna, many airlines reduced their frequency because many passengers rescheduled their movements during the period,” he said.

The second factor, according to him, is the drop in the operations of Arik Air and Aero Contractors that have been facing operational crisis since 2016.

“As for domestic, we are still not there because the two big domestic carriers, Arik and Aero, are down which is why Air Peace and Medview are currently topping.

“Currently, Arik has drastically dropped because its number of aircraft has dropped from about 36 to five or six which is bad for the industry.

“Likewise, Aero that used to be flying frequently is currently doing skeletal operation and there are so many issues that domestic airlines are faced with,” said the manager.

Mr. Saroke expressed optimism that domestic passengers flow would peak in the second quarter since the 2017 budget had been passed by the National Assembly.

He, however, called on the government to address the issues of multiple taxation and high cost of aviation fuel to help the domestic operators expand their operations.
While commending the Federal Government over the steady availability of forex to operators and fuel importers, Mr. Saroke also called for upgrading of the nation’s major airports.

He noted that for an airport to be viable, there must be viable domestic carriers, adding that the country needed a viable national carrier and strong domestic carriers.
“This is because the airline business is capital intensive, it takes an investor with passion for the industry to have the patience because it is not always profitable at the beginning.

“Emirate Airlines started with just two leased aircraft in 1983 with 10 million dollars loan from its government, but today they are the biggest in the world with about 259 aircraft.

“We need a national carrier but of more importance is viable airport where a hub can be created.
“What makes an airport a hub is the traffic but what we have in Lagos and Abuja are not good enough.”

Besides, Saroke called on state governors to do their best in creating business and tourism opportunities in their states to boost domestic travels.

He said that former governors of Cross River and Akwa Ibom, Donald Duke and Godswill Akpabio, respectively, were able to open up their states to visitors through tourist attractions.

According to him, the busiest routes from Abuja currently are Lagos, Yola, Kano, Port Harcourt and Owerri, while other routes like Enugu, Calabar and others are usually busy during festive periods.

“Some of these governors are not even helping matters because they are not creating business and tourist opportunities that can encourage travel in their states.

“For instance, when Akpabio was the governor of Akwa Ibom, he opened up the state for tourists, golfers and other visitors, and there was regular traffic into the state.

“Former governor Donald Duke of Cross River also did same through creation of Obudu Ranch, Tinapa, among others.

“Something must attract a visitor to a state which we lack in most of the states,” he said.

NAN recalls that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) on Monday disclosed that domestic flight operations declined by 33 per cent in the first quarter compared to the same period in 2016.

The NCAA also reported that 10,366 flights operated in the first quarter of 2017 compared to the 15,434 flights operated in 2016 by the same eight domestic airlines.

Title is wrong. 1.3 million tons per year. Let them complete it and concession it. The president of company says none of 30 year old equipment obsolete thats interesting.

- The Federal Government says the first phase of Ajaokuta Steel project is completed and will provide 500,000 upstream and downstream employment when it becomes operational.
These options he said include outright sales, concessioning and joint venture of Ajaokuta steel.
He, however, denied rumour about the company equipment being obsolete, adding that the company, with 98 per cent completed, could stand test of time, and that all its equipment were functioning appropriately.

Enugu, Anambra, Benue and Kogi

What are the current governors of these 3 states waiting for? And what have all their previous governors been doing?

huh
All minerals are own and controlled by federal government. They ran industry into the ground and failed to exploit these minerals with state own corporations such as Nigerian Coal Corporation.

I hope they dont mean the coal in Enugu, Biafra land?
That’s part of it but hardly necessary. There's coal all over the nation. Btw Enugu governor wants to exploit coal. It's just a matter of time.

Blue3k:
Interesting stats I pulled up about coal production. Despite being known as coal city Enugu produces none. Benue has rich coal reserves but doesn't produce any. Northern states like Nasarawa produce more currently.

Coal production by state (tons)

Kogi - 911,764.19
Gombe - 77,364.60
Nasarawa - 26.67
Enugu - 0
Benue - 0

I really don't get the joke. Do foreigners pay higher tax rates for anything. I thought the tax rate is tax rate. The only thing that could change is out of state cost for University or something similar to that.

Once upon a time, Texas said it was tired of the United States and they left to form a Country. By themselves, they begged to come back to the United States after a few Years.

Let them get their own Country, and let us see how far they will go. But you guys should not behave like Texas, and start begging to come back to Nigeria.
Your history of Texas is wrong. Texas seccession happened with Mexico first. We won the war against them had our own country but failed due to debts. Then we joined the United States in 1845. Then seceded from United States to form the Confederate states of America 1861. The Confederate States lost to the Union. Then we had to accept joining again.

Point is Texas didn't beg to rejoin United States or Mexico. Trust me on this I'm a Texan myself.

PoliticsRe: Why Nigerian Doctors Cannot Treat President Muhammadu Buhari by Blue3k2: 11:00am On May 10, 2017
There are talented doctors here but the state of Nigeria has nelected medical infastrure. That's why 1 billion dollars eaves country annually for medical tourism. It's the same reason we go hat in hand looking for meningitis vaccines from WHO and UK instead of simply making our own supply like we used to with other vaccines.

I bring Ibom Specialist Hospital as good going by heath minister’s comments. That's only 1 hospital. We need to do more. Simply make importing equipment duty free unless we can manufacturer it.

The parts about African nations loving to settle thing with gun instead of dialogue is very true.
