Never mind folks. Got it! Yes, android has MNC and MCC which are the network codes and carrier codes. However, I just realized that they get filled in automatically, based on the sim card in the phone. So, I am all set.

Anyone using an android device on MTN care to share their data settings. I have used MTN on my smartphones, so I know what the APN is. However, androids do have have a few more options that need to be set. I plan on using an HTC inspire (same thing as the HTC desire) when I visit in a few weeks.

Instant mail is definitely not an advantage. Any smartphone will do the same thing. The BB PIN which allows folks to send msgs to each other freely, is the ONLY advantage. And this is a big plus in a country like Nigeria, where mobile phone rates are still a little high, compared to rates in developed countries. There are apps out there, as already mentioned, that are quickly eliminating this advantage the BB has though. The Imessage on IOs5 is another example. The BB is pretty much dead in the western world (Only businesses use it), however it's still a major deal in the developing nations.

I'd suggest you just post it here. The more heads the better. Plus, folks here my be able to get you to a point where by you can complete this task on your won.

Not a C programmer but, I suspect the amount is not being read correctly. Why don't you print the amount as soon as you read it. I bet it will be 0. Then you can focus on why it's not being read correctly.

This is very true. They used to accept it up until 3 years ago or so. I am just surprised they still do this crap! A friend of mine (US Citizen using US issued CC, but also carrying Nigerian passport) got his booking, but had to go to BA counter at O'Hare airport to make the payment and get confirmation. Unfortunately, we, the innocent, are paying for the wrong that a few scumbags from our country have done.

This is not an issue with any of the other airlines though, or if booking a BA flight via any of the third parties, such as Orbitz, Expedia, etc.

Blackberrys are pretty much dead here (And the rest of the western world). The only people that carry it is because it's a company phone and they are required to. Their personal phones are another phone, most likely Iphone or Androd. Was reading an article in fortune that did mention that they are thriving in the western world though. I guess though. Not even sure of these folks that carry one are aware that the likely of RIM (the company that makes BB's) NOT existing past 2012 is very high.

In my opinion, to be very successful at it, you have to at least like mathematics. As for being a guru, it really depends on what your definition of guru is. One thing is for sure, if you do NOT like math/problem solving, programming is definitely not for you.

The level and structure of the educational system will be one of the determinants of the future of the country. Unfortunately, the education system in Nigeria as a whole is really in bad shape. As someone in IT and a background in Computer Science, I have come across quite a number of Computer Science graduates from several Universities in Nigeria that do NOT know jack about computer science/programming. Some actually never used a computer. It's absolutely beyond me how a graduate in computer Science, a field that is very practical/hands-on based, has never done any programming. Bottom line - an IT degree (an a whole lot of other fields) from Nigeria basically means nothing here. They all pretty much have to start from scratch.

I use these at my current contract and have also used them at other gigs. I am not based in Naija though. I am really not sure what those that develop enterprise level apps in Naija use.

I guess the security folks in Nigeria do not check the luggage of hostesses and pilots. Or may be she just bribed her way through. I certainly have no mercy for anyone that, in the name of greediness, continues to give us a bad name. Hope the prosecute her to the fullest!

In that directory, do you see javac.exe? Or if you go the the command prompt (start->run, then type cmd, then type javac, what do you get

Are you sure that's the correct path to your bin directory though? Navigate to your bin directory under your JDK installation and cut and paste that and add it to your path.

Also, most BBs are branded not only the ones sold in the USA. Not sure it would make any difference which one you get as long as it has the correct bands and it's unlocked of course. Most BB's have all the GSM/3G bands these days anyway.

Not sure why you need a mentor. You already have the tools and you are not a beginner. Just hit the floor running - You can start by trying to develop something. Spec out the design, and then start to develop its parts one at a time, using the resources you already have. If you have any specific questions or run into issues, you can post here and let folks take a stab at it.

Based on postings I have seen here, most of the so-called mentors will charge you for something you can pretty much do on your own.

Do not go into it for the money. That's the mistake a lot of people make. Which do you think you would love doing for a living. As a developer anyway, you will need to at least know the basics of relational database management. To be proficient in either of them and be able to make money doing it, takes a lot of hard work. Yes. As has been mentioned in a number of responses in this thread. I have never tried my ebay account from Nigeria. But, paypal, will be suspended instantly once their system detects a Nigerian IP (or an IP address from any of the other countries on their black list) address.

The lack of Paypal in Nigeria has nothing to do with because the banks systems are not up-to-date. Paypal has flagged Nigeria as one of the countries that they will not allow to access their services. Even those of us that have accounts created in other countries, if we make the mistake of trying to access it from Nigeria (say when visiting), not only will we not be allowed, we will also be required to re-verify the account, and that cannot be done from Nigeria. Once paypal detects an IP originating in Nigeria, it will be flagged as fraudulent.

You have to determine what your strengths are, and what you would like to do, and start to work towards that goal. Yes, I know you said you did not get a degree (it's not a requirement). you just have to work really hard in whatever you choose to do. Also, more importantly, make sure it's something you would love to do, and don't go into it just for the money.

You will certainly SUCCEED if you work very hard. What you have going for you is that, you already have a background in computer science/programming. Like others said, pick the tools you need and learn it very well, then go from there. Even if it means working for someone, you will generate income and use that time to formulate your ideas.

In my opinion, you really have to love programming and be up to the challenge to be successful at it. Yes, it pays well, but it's certainly not easy. And this is where a lot of people go wrong. They go into it thinking 'money', however they can't withstand the challenge that goes with it.

Scientific what, and how did you come up with that? C is a precedural programming language while C++ and Java are object oriented programming languages. All 3, in addition to other languages, can be used to learn programming. The key thing is to gt a good grasp of the constructs. Regardless of the programming language of choice.

Not necessarily. It really depends on the individual. I have not lost my dedication one bit. I am married with kid. And I am about as driven as ever to learn new things, write applications, etc.

Exactly! I have to say - some of the posts I read in these forums in general are sometimes beyond my imagination. There was one that was several pages long comparing the differences between programming and coding. What a joke! Who cares if you are called a programmer or a coder! We as Nigerians need to get away from these nonsensical titles that we believe in! We really need to google up things before posting in a forum.

PS - As a veteran in this field, I can tell you that title does not mean jack on this end. It's what you bring to the table that matters. Your title may say one thing, however, if you do not know the stuff you will be eliminated quickly.

Just ten minutes googling and you'll know programming and mathematics (even music and linguistics, which are related fields by the way) are actually a matter of pattern recognition and symbol placement. It has nothing to do with whether one is male or female.

I agree. If you get a good grasp of the core concepts, then it will make developing solutions to problems easy. Regardless of programming language. The programming language you use is just one of the several tools out there that can be used to implement the solution. What matters is coming up with a solid solution.

This is not true at all. Yes, it's a male dominated industry, but certainly not for the reasons you listed. Besides, there are loads of female developers on this end.

Women's brains are not created to be logical; they are created to be emotional. That is why many women don't fare well in computer science and engineering. They fare well with being counselors and other careers that requires less of a logical mind.

I am assuming you are staying with someone. Can't they help. As long as you have the papers to work, you should be able to get something.
