When I mistakenly (I forgot it's not accessible) tried to access my US-based paypal account from Nigeria, they blocked my account and had to go through re-authorization when I got back to the US. Our country folks have made things difficult for us.

Certainly good news for the Nigerian market. For RIM to actually have a presence there. The BB is big in naija (even though fading seriously in developed countries) so this will help. A good business move on their part...they have to focus on where they can still make money.

As I have posted in other threads, without a way to uniquely identify an individual, this sim registration thing is just another waste of time. We have to have a way to totally uniquely identify someone, in order to associate other information (phone number, sim number, address, etc.)with this unique person. Without that, it will not work. It works in other countries like SA, because that can uniquely identify an individual. That is, they have a functioning National ID system.

Any modem with the appropriate frequency will do. Of course, it's better to get an unlocked one so that you can swap sims. When I was there last month, I used an unlocked Sierra wireless modem and it happens to have the 3G bands used there. I experience very satisfactory data speeds with both my MTN and GLO sims. These can be had for cheap at several online stores, including ebay. Shipping to Nigeria may be another story, of course.

In the USA. Heck! I have read post about Naija folks that can not code themselves out of a paper bag call themselves Software Engineer. it word Engineer is used so loosely there, that it's a joke.

In general, Nigerians just place a lot of nonsensical emphasis on title. For example Engr, Arch, etc. You would not see an Engineer, Architect, etc. using such titles here. Even the ones that did some sorry ass course at some local university there address themselves with titles. The title should not mean jack. Let what you can do speak for itself. Again, it's a Naija thing. Titles do not mean jack here!

I know for sure that both MTN and GLO prepaids roam here in the USA. No need to do anything extra. Make sure you look at the roaming page for your carrier to check the rates and if they have roaming in the country you are visiting.

I am currently in Nigeria, and can confirm that this happened to a lot of folks, my dad, brother, sister, etc. My sister actually called the customer service number, and the lady on the other end confirmed that they have received a lot if complaints about this issue this am. Actually, the network had been very unreliable today.

I agree with the comment about MTN's network. I subscribed to the 500 MB for 2000 naira plan as soon as I got to Naija last Thursday, however the network congestion has made it difficult to use sometimes. So far I have used about 180 MB. Most if those when tethered to my netbook. Had to do most of my surfing at night and early in the morning to get anything done. Also, there is no 3g either. At least not here in Ogba.

No point for all this argument. RIM has realized that they need to change their business model, and they are doing that, though it may be too late. In the western world, BB is pretty much dead as a personal phone. Even some businesses, for example. The Fed. Govt. Are moving on from BB. However, they have seen a niche market in the developing countries, Nigeria, India, etc. and they are focussing on that. Only time will tell if that will be enough to sustain them.

You are comparing apples and oranges. They are two different things. Determine your needs, then choose the one that will help you accomplish that.

Actually networking and programming are two different things. And because you know one does not necessarily mean you can do the other.

No need for a study guide. Just search the net if you get stuck trying to do something. Remember - Netbeans, eclipse, etc. are just tools that will aid you in development. They certainly will not teach you programming.

Could not have said it better. For those living in Naija, with seriously sub-par internet connection, if at all, the BB is probably the way to go. Also, because of the cost of calls/txt there, being able to communicate freely using the BB PIN is a big plus. While OTOH, in the western world where calls/txt are very cheap, at this stage of the ball game, the BB offers absolutely no advantages over the android, iphone, etc.

Ignorance is bliss. how on earth would anyone compare Android Os to Bb. Just based on apps development alone bb is way behind not to talk of flexibility. But i can understand why someone residing in Naija would want to compare what with no reliable internet conections to talk of. PS. I have HTC inspire, iphone4, BB curve, and Nokia E63. A few years ago, the nokia and BB were ok. But in today's web world, they just do not cut it as productivity tools. With my android/iphone I can pretty much do almost everything I do on the laptop.

As far as being productive in a mobile device, the difference between BB and android/iphone is like day and night. BB is pretty much dead on this end. Anyone you see with a BB here, its likely a work phone. Heck! Even the federal govt., one of RIM's biggest client has started to shift to iPhone. That was a big nail on the BB coffin.

The real problem is the education system. It is a real joke and has failed us Miserably!

Certainly, major negligence on the part of the bus driver. It's his responsibility (or at least those that employed him to transport school kids) to make sure that the bus is clear of any objects before taking off. And to make sure the kids are in the hands of the person picking them up before driving off. It's so unfortunate!

No. My iphone4 is not unlocked. I just use one of my other smartphones when visit. I think there are options for unlocking the iphone4, however you may want to google for it, to see which one may work best for you.

You will have to unlock via a 3rd party. I use my other unlocked AT&T phones when I visit Naija.

Not correct at all. AT&T will provide the unlock code (upon request) to all their phones, except the iphone. The iphone thing is some agreement between them and apple. I have unlocked about 8 phones via AT&T in the last 3 years that I have been with them. The most recent one being my HTC inspire (got the code within 3 mins on the phone) about a month ago. You just need to be a customer in good standing. I have an iphone4. Unfortunately, they will not provide the unlock code. Just have to use any of the other unlocked AT&T phones I have.

Again, thanks for your responses fellows. I will pickup GLO in addition to my MTN. As I mentioned, last April when I was there, trying to browse with MTN was painful most of the time. At lest I will have another option this time. Also, do GLO sims come data activated and all I have to do is add the APN to my device, or does one need to activate the sim for data separately, besides the sim registration? With MTN, all I did was register the sim and add the APN to my device.

Thanks for the responses guys. I guess I will just pick up a GLO when I get there and just see which one works better. The MTN will be my main line for voice since I have used that in the past and most folks know that number. Just want something (another MTN or GLO, or any of the other ones) that I will used strictly in my unlocked usb modem.

I know, Odiaero. Especially when one is used to 24/7 reliable data connection anywhere. I was last there in April, and I have always used MTN. Usually sign up for the daily data plans, however the reliability is very questionable. Will be there next month, so just trying to see if things have got better with MTN or if there are better options.

It's very important that I am able to connect and maintain a connection during my visit. I have an unlocked USB modem that I plan on using with my laptop. So, I just want to get the opinion of those of you that have used both. Which one do you think is more reliable when it comes to 3G data. I already have an MTN sim that I use, but it sure has been a task maintaining a 3G connection. A lot of times one cannot even connect at all. So, just trying to see if GLO will be better. Usage will be mostly on the Ikeja/Ogba area.

There is this saying "Garbage in, Garbage out". If you put incorrect data into a system, it will spit out totally useless info as output, when you ask for it. I mentioned this because, this whole registration of sim card is a joke! Without a national ID system that uniquely identifies someone in place, anybody can register as many sims as they want. With totally false information. I registered my sim when I got it last April (had to do it for it to work). But, all the information they asked was not and could not be verified. I know a lot of folks that just send someone (driver, assistant, etc.) to go and register the sim card. So the sim is registered with someone else's picture and fingerprint. What a joke!

For anyone that sends a lot of sms, delivery reports will be more of a nuisance. However, it's good to know that all the operators there in Nageria support it. Of the 2 major GSM carriers (AT&T and Tmobile) here, only Tmobile supports it. However, they both support MMS delivery reports.

Not all phones support the activation of sms delivery report. Also, some networks actually do charge you the cost of an sms to get the delivery report.
