What a bunch of bull! They all give the same reason. I bet you if he did not get caught, he will do it again. Then they give a cock-and-bull story. They keep giving us a bad name. There are a whole lot of other ways for him to make up his so called debt. I certainly have no mercy for him. The less of people like him we have out there, the better it will be for the rest of us.

I think I can speak for majority of the folks that have posted to this thread, if I say that, we as Nigerians no doubt have to do our own part to change the way the rest of the world (be is SA, USA, UK, etc. ) perceives us. Our reputation does not help us in most cases. Even though a good majority of us a law abiding and hard-working folks, there are quite a number that engage in these crimes. It just seems like there is more negative news than positive when it comes to Nigerians living abroad. Almost every non-Nigerian I know is aware of all these 419 letters. Just recently (2 weeks ago I think), another Nigerian lady arriving from Amsterdam on KLM, was arrested in Detroit for carrying 47 bags of cocaine. Let's face it - This nonsense has to STOP! I certainly would not feel sorry if they put her ass in jail for life.

I read somewhere in this forum that some carriers (MTN I think they said is one of them) is now blocking opera mini. It did not make sense to me since, using this browser compresses data, and if anything it helps throughput, plus I always use MTN whenever I am in Naija and I ONLY use opera mini on my phones. So, if true, it must be a very recent thing, or may be some versions of opera mini. It would help if someone can shed more light on it. As I plan on visiting Naija in march, and plan on using my MTN sim with opera mini.

May be that's the low season, My ticket(Bought on Orbitz) to Lagos on United for March travel date, from Chicago cost a total of $950. That's at least $300 less than it usually cost me. If you go to Orbitz, you will see that the all the airlines have cheaper rates for those dates. I think saw BA at about $1100, and they are usually at least $1400.

Yeah. I know. I have Opera mini on all my phones. However, I can probably make do if it does not work. Just trying to get my head around why it will not work. Opera mini siphons the data through their servers through their servers first, and compresses and reduces the amount of data used. Why some carriers would block it is beyond me. Nothing like that on this end or in any other country's sim I have used.

Are you sure about MTN not supporting opera mini? It must be a new thing. I have certainly used opera mini on MTN in the past. Even last year while I was there. I was also able to sign up for data packages and also connected my phone to my laptop to surf. My entire family and most of the folks I know are on MTN though, and that makes it easy. I'll probably just get 2 sims then. One for Data and the MTN for voice.

I am surprised to find out that Opera mini (my favorite browser) does not work with all carriers. I can't stand the default browser on most phones. That may play into my decision regarding which carrier to go with when I visit Naija in March. I was already debating between GLO and MTN (have always used MTN). I depend on data a lot, adn will need a good data package, and that's probably where MTN shines. I may have to check out Zain's website to see what they offer.

I believe as long as you have the right APN settings and select it, you should be fine. As for checking data balance, I am assuming you have a data package. If so, there has to be a short code you can send from the phone that will let you know your balance.

Joyce_j, where are you running into problems. Do you have specific questions, and what have you done so far? Please post more information so that we know how to help you.

Depending on your database of choice, this may vary a little. You can also google for better examples. Just typing this off the top of my head.

That is certainly a SprintPCS phone. A CDMA phone does not have much value in Nigeria (Primarily a GSM country) compared to a GSM phone. I know CDMA is used a little bit in Nigeria, however your chances of getting much for that phone is very slim.

I read somewhere in this forum that you can't. I guess I'll find out for sure when OI visit in March. What a major limitation that would be if it's true. So, does that mean one can't get updates as well. if so, I guess you have to wait till you leave the country to get apps and updates. Almost defeats the purpose of using the phone primarily in Nigeria.

Good to know this has been extended. I am in Chicago myself. I know the embassy folks have been here a couple of times, to setup shop. However, I was not around on both occasions. I will be in Naija in March. So I plan to get it then.

wow! I was not aware that the app store is not available in Nigeria. So, using the iphone there certainly has some limitations.

Like I said, it may cause delays, but certainly not disruptions like it did in London. I also did mention tha it's because they are not used to it out there.

It is just London and not the whole of the UK. London normally doesn't get snow like this but in the northern part of the country where it is colder they're used to coping.

Any phone that has the 900/1800 bands will work in Nigeria. It should not have anything to do with the starting IMEI numbers.

Please verify - This may only apply to landlines in countries with free incoming calls. Or to all lines in other countries that charge for incoming calls, eg US.

Any of the US BB's from Tmobile or AT&T should work in Nigeria as long as they are unlocked. They should all be quadband (850/900/1800/1900) anyway. If it's from any of the non GSM carriers, such as sprint or Verizon, make sure it's a dual GSM/CDMA model. Both cerriers have a handfull of BB's that are GSM/CDMA.

The UK is just not prepared to handle this kind of snow. This should be an eye-opener though. A lot of cities in the US (including here in Chicago) get a whole lot more snow than this. And are also much more colder. The difference is that, it's part of every winter here, so we are prepared for it. snow/salt trucks, de-icers, etc.  The trucks are usually already stationed on the highways before it even starts snowing, especially around rush hour. Once it starts they hit it full-force.

That amount of snow/cold will certainly not disrupt anything here! It may delay air  and road traffic, but that's about it.

Same logic. The line that does the forwarding will be charged as if it's calling the "forwarded to" line. If MTN to MTN calls are free, then the same thing applies to the forwarding.

There is DEFINITELY a charge. The diverted line will be charged for all calls that get diverted. The rate will be whatever it costs the diverted line to call the line diverted to. So, if you divert your MTN line to your GLO line, any someone calls your MTN line (rings on your GLO line of course) and you talk for 10 minutes, your MTN line will be deducted the cost of a 10 minute call to the GLO line. Divert will not even work unless there is credit on the line being diverted. And once the credit is exhausted, the line ceased being diverted to the other line. It may just go to VM in this case, or the caller gets a busy tone or so.

Think about it, if there were no charge then, everyone will be doing it.

Yeah. Skype developed a fallout with both Nimbuzz and Fring about a month ago. So, skype is no longer supported on both apps. I use both and they are very similar.

While such a thorough search/scrutiny is uncalled for under normal circumstances, it's  likely something may have triggered their suspicion. I am sure a lot of Nigerians with similar circumstances as yours enter the UK. Is this your first time entering the UK, is this  brand new passport that has never been used, etc.?  If you come back and provide more information, then may be folks can try to guess at what may have caused this. OTOH, it could have been a bunch morons on duty that day and they were just overreacting.

Certainly get it unlocked here before leaving. Both AT&T and TMobile give out the unlock code upon request. You just need yo be a customer in good standing. They will email the code and instructions to you, or give it right over the phone.

You may actually be better off in Nigeria. If you let folks know the kind if jobs or business you are into, then they will be able to advice appropriately.

Yes. Compared to developed countries, the costs are still quite high. However, they will keep coming down. Let's face it, mobile telecommunications has really just recently picked up in Naija, compared to developed countries. While still quite high, the rates have come down significantly compared to when mobile communication first started to pick up about 8 years ago or do.

I agree. it's all about being informed about the optons that are available. There is no reason to sign up or use a blackberry if all you use it for is social networking. Any smartphone or even a basic phone will do the same thing. As for mails, any smartphone with an email client will do the same. For example, the email clients on my Nokia and windows mobile phones both do "push email". Like others said, I think the BB thing is just a fad in Naija at the moment.

Yeah! Mo Bay is really nice. I was at the Grand Palladium resort for vacation with my family in April for 7 days. There has to be quite a few Nigerians there. At the resort, one of the employees had a Nigerian doctor, another lady said she knows at least 2 Nigerians working at the resort. So, it's just a matter of time before you meet more Naija's. BTW, Montego Bay is mostly a tourist destination though, compared to say Kingston, which will certainly have more Naijas. Really liked MO Bay. Also, took a trip to Negril, which is only 45 minutes away. &-mile beach, Rick's Cafe, etc. are some places to check out there. Again, Negril, Mo Bay, are all major tourist destinations. In fact, I believe they are the # 1 and #2 tourist destinations in Jamaica. So, majority of the jobs there will be tourism related.
