I also want to mention that the rate I mentioned above is the online/mobile app rate. If one goes to any of their several locations to do the transfer, last weeks rate was 310 Naira to the $. Yes, a little bit less than the $321 rate in Lagos as of last week.

OP, have you looked into Transfast? Their rates are higher. They quoted 265 naira to $1 yesterday. So, I executed a test transaction (just sent $200) to my Naija account from here in the US, just to test it out. I believe the black market rate was a little over 300 naira yesterday. Ideal if you are not in a hurry to pick up the money in Naija. Since it takes 3 - 5 working days.

I am using the ZE551ML 2GB version. I purchased it directly from the ASUS store. For $199, this is an awesome device! I used it in Naija on GLO/MTN when I was there the last few weeks. However, I primarily use it on AT&T in the US. It gets updates regularly. About as regular as stock android devices that I have used.

Remember folks - your device has to have the specific LTE band that the carrier uses for it to work. I am not Sure what LTE band Ntel uses though.

Blackberry has been dead here in the US for a very long time. I can't remember the last time I actually saw someone using one. The US Govt., corporate America, etc. have all moved on from BB's. I believe its last strong hold was in Developing countries.

The device is locked as others have said. Most carriers do unlock their devices for free. So, you can contact the person that sent it to you and have him request the unlock code, or as mentioned, go to one of the 3rd party places in Naija that can unlock it.

In my opinion, that it fluctuates is an understatement. not usable in the Ogba area the last time I was there.

Is this still accurate and may be MTN's website is not updated. I do not see the MTN 4.5 GB all day plan for 2500 Naira. It's listed as 6500 naira

AFAIK, whatsapp has always been free for users in most of the western world (USA, UK, etc).

They do not have to use the most expensive phone in the world for them to get their job done. Only in Nigeria does the phone you carry around determine what you think you are. Most of the folks with these smartphones do not even use up to 5% of its functionality. That's one of the problems we have in Naija...everyone want to belong. Even those that truly can't afford these devices, will try to get a hold of one by all means. Even if it means spending a good percentage of their salary on it.

You initiate the port process at the network you want to port to. So, in this case, just go the GLO's office. If you "really" like MTN, you can always port back and do the registration at a later date when the process is not as hectic.

Honestly there has to be a class action lawsuit brought against this company, if possible. How in the world can they put innocent folks through this mess and be allowed to get away with it! I went through this crap myself. Registered the sim a few years ago, but had to re-register it in October. Looks like their batch systems are not updating the data during the nightly batch run. So, even though the online/interactive system records it successfully and we get a "registration complete" message. At the end of the day when their system tries to update to the main database it is failing. And they are putting the blame on the customer and putting them through the nonsensical process again! Our government and authorities need speak up! This is all MTN's fault. They realized that and they are trying to bribe folks by giving them some credit after doing the registration.

Have to agree with lofty900. Netflix is dependent on the availability of seamless data. Without that, it's a moot point. Most Nigerians still get their data via their phone line. A 2 hour movie (not even HD movie, which most netflix movies are btw) will consume several gigabytes of data. It's good that it's now available to the masses, but only very few will actually be able to enjoy it.

Your husband was definitely roaming if you called him on his MTN line while in the US. When you use your device outside of your local country, you are roaming. All the Naija carriers have roaming automatically. Definitely expensive to make/receive calls while roaming. The best option is for him to pick up an AT&T or Tmobile sim here and any of the stores walmart, bestbuy radioshack, etc. He can also get a chep phone+sim package for about $15 - $20. Then he can call Naija at ok rates or use a dial around service such as rebtel to call naija for about 5 us cents. Or he can just get a data plan on the US sim and use whatsapp etc to call.

Also, did you verify the shipping cost to Nigeria? They may want to charge extra.

Here was my situation.I received a txt from MTH that my sim has been deactivated, due to incomplete registration (I registered the thing, took picture, did finger print, etc. in 2011 when I got it), that I should go tot he nearest MTN office to re-register (Just like they asked the millions affected to do). Problem was, I am based outside Nigeria, and will not be back there till early nest year. And my that time, my sim/number would have been recycled. I did not want to lose that number. Well, I reached out to Jide. He was able to reach out to upper management, and they made it possible for me to re-register my sim form here. A little bit of paper work involved, and someone in Nigeria had to go there on my behalf. Took less than 24 hrs. after they received all the info requested. Sim is not active again.

The sad state of things in Nigeria. 60K for a BSc holder is insane! A very good driver makes 35k - 40K or more. What a country! The damn politicians have failed the masses, and are still doing it. What a bleak future for a lot of our youths.

Durchess, I know 35K is not much, and as you are doing it for the experience, it sounds like a good idea. Especially if the experience will help you in future job opportunities. I agree, a couple of computer programming classes (I'm a software developer myself) or so, can open the door to better opportunities.

To the OP, 60k is not bad. But if a Masters degree will open up a lot more opportunities, then go for it.

Exactly! I went to their office and registered the sim, took picture, they took my fingerprint. Well, I got a text that my line has been blocked. Currently out of the country,and will not be back in Nigeria for a few months. What a bunch of morons!

Hello Jide - Again, thanks for the good work you are doing here. You assisted with a request about 2 years ago or so. Well, I received a text this morning that my line has been disconnected because my sim registration is incomplete. The message asks that I visit an MTN shop with valid photo ID. I am not sure why my sim registration that I did about 4 or 5 years ago would now be incomplete. I am no currently in Nigeria (I was there last month and used the line without any problems). I will not be there till sometime in March. Is there any way you can assist with this? I will try to PM you all the information you may need.

In my opinion, it's best to learn on your own. Get the tools you need if you do not already have them - a book for your language of choice (plenty online), install the appropriate development environment on your pc/laptop, and go from there. If you run into any road block, just post the issue here. There are quite a number of knowledgeable folks here that are able and willing to assist you.

Caution - Better make sure GLO data works well in your area. I just came back from Naija. And when I was there I signed up for the GLO 4.5 GB plan. In my 10 days there, I was only able to use about 200 MB or so of it. Absolutely horrible data connection speed. Almost always on EDGE. Thank God I also have an MTN sim. So, I signed up for a similar plan. I think it was 3 GB night plus 1.5 GB day plan. MTN worked flawlessly! This was in the Ogba/Ikeja area. The GLO network is certainly saturated in that area, and that made data usage pretty much impossible!

IMO, for functionality and availability of apps, you can't go wrong with android. Windows is obviously light-weight, and faster. But it's lacking when it comes to the number of apps. It's the availability of apps that make these devices, and the windows OS is just not there yet.

Here in the US, Any of the Engineering/Software Development professions are high earners. Nurses also earn a lot. As a software Developer (consulting), I'll speak to that effect. Depending on negotiation skills, anyone with a few years of Software development experience can easily earn upwards of $60/hr here in the Midwest US. Experienced Nurses upwards of $42/hr, but more importantly, they can change jobs like changing clothes. Wife is one, so I know.
