I agree. CN, Nickelodeon, and the other kids networks have shows for different age groups. One just needs to make sure thay are watching shows that are appropriate for their age. Yes, I know that even Sponge-Bob uses some not so nice words and the kids learn from such shows. My kids are 9 and 7, so I try to make sure they do not watch some of those shows that are for teens. I also agree though, that one can only do so much. Heck! these kids grow up quickly. My 9 year olds has been asking me when he is going to get his own mobile phone. He said several of the kids in his class have their own mobiles.

Definitely the long flights. I just can't stand it. Unfortunately, we do not have much choice when going from the US to Europe or Nigeria. Most of the US to Europe is at least 8 hours. The west coast (California, Seattle, etc) is about 10 hours. Then another 6 hours or so to Lagos. Very stressful indeed!

As someone who has a number of global sim cards. I think you should mention that the card has a UK (or other country mobile number). And it will certainly cost a premium to be called on the number. Additonally, you should mention that if calls are received on the local US/canadian number, there is a per minute rate. Incoming calls are free (in some countries ONLY)only when called on the UK (or other country number).

In my opinion, there is no point getting the iphone4 to use in Nigeria unless you have some kind of unlimited data plan. That is the only way you will use that phone to its potential. Besides, it uses a micro-sim card, and I am not sure any of the carriers in Nigeria are using that yet.

Heas first Java is not bad. I have the electronic version and I have only looked at a couple of chapters in it. You can download it freely as well. I actually do like the heads first series. I have a few of their books, some in print and most in electronic format. Including HF Servlets & JSP, HF Ajax, HF Design Patterns, HF PMP, etc.

Like others said there is no so called "best book". Each book has its own pros and cons. Most of us have several books today as professionals, and used several books as we continue to learn every day.

I have the book already mentioned " Beginning Java Objects", I used it when I wanted to get a little more about how objects communicate with each other etc. However, when I was learning, I used Beginning Java 2 by Ivor Horton. I think it's at JDK 5 version now. After you have used these 2 books to get a grasp of the basics, you can then take a look at Thinking in Java by Bruce Eckel. It's freely available for download.

OP, why don't you post what you have. This sounds like a homework problem to me. You are already on the right track by solving this yourself, because in the "real world" you will need to solve problems yourself.

What is all this argument about? They are both great countries. Each with its advantages and disadvantages. For some of us, the US fits the bill, and for some the UK fits it. It all depends on what you think will work for you after taking the pros and cons of each country into consideration.

I think the only direct airline from Naija to US is Delta. So, at a minimum you will have one layover, if you fly Delta that is. Any other airlines means you will have at least 2 layovers. For example any of the European airlines will take you to their country fo course, then another stop in the US, before connecting you to South Carolina.

You are going to south Carolina. Certainly no direct flights.The largest big cities close to it with international airports are Atlanta and Charlotte, N. C. Your ticket will be more expensive due to this.

Another key thing in any BIG city you do visit is, staying where it’s easy to get around to all the activities. That usually means staying at one of the downtown hotels.

Sure. I can certainly vouch for Chicago. Especially in the summer. Our summers are very mild and lots of places to visit. Pretty much all the stores are on Michigan avenue " Magnificent mile" The winters can also be brutal though.

i really do not have any laid down plan for now, which is why i need suggestions.

Any of the US "Big Cities" have their attractions. It depends on when you plan on visiting the US as well. In the winter, Florida and anywhere in the south (where the weather will be warm) are usually where folks head. Heck! Even folks living in very cold places like here in Chicago, head down to Florida/The Caribbean on vacation in the winter. Here in Chicago, there are lots of activities during the summer, both for kids and adults. I guess it really depends on what you like to do. If you just want to relax and shop, then pretty much any of the Big US cities will offer that. In Chicago for example, we have pretty much all the major shops downtown, several HUGE malls in the suburbs, including the 2nd largest in-door mall, etc. Heck! We also have a lot of Naija activities and parties, since there is a large Naija population here.

Nigerians get the visa within one week with ease and since the OP has US visa, they do not need transit visa.

So I support the Idea of spending some time in Orlando then visit Caribbean for another one or two weeks

An all-inclusive in the Caribbean would definitely be nice. Not sure how difficult it would be to get a visa though. I was just at the Grand Palladium (see link below) with my family during the kids spring-break last month. If visa is not an issue, then I'd suggest spending some time in Orlando, then head to the Caribbean for about a week or so.

You already have some certifications that may get you in the door, however I am sure you are aware that you will need to update your skills to compete. You may need to get into a company at a low level, then just start to work your way as you brush up on your skills. Even if neccesary, take a menial job, but make sure you are working towards getting that professional job. You certainly do not want to end up doing those menial jobs like a lot of folks end up doing here in the US and I am sure the UK.

Hope you came with some money. Get an apartment in an OK area, establish credit as time goes on, then you can start to look for a house. It will not be easy. Just attack it one at a time.

Disney/Orlando will certainly be one of the best places to take the kids to, but it will be quite expensive around that time as well. The weather will be no different from Lagos weather, if not worse. Every city in the US has its attractions. So, without having any particular city in mind, Orlando is the most appropriate place to take them to. See if you can book a package that includes tickets to the theme parks. If not, you can always do it separately. Your hotel will usually be on the park grounds and there will be free shuttle to and from the park. Disney is kids/families paradise.

Even here in Chicago, we have tons of stuff for kids to do, but my preference for someone coming to the US on vacation with kids that age will be Orlando. However, if you do want to try Chicago, you can google for the info about kids activities or you can PM me for more in.

You will likely need to rent a car to get around. Houston is not one of those major cities with massive transportation system with busses/trains like New York, Chicago, etc. Unless may be if you are staying downtown. Do you know anyone in any other US state? Dalls is the closest large city that I am aware of. Houston and Dallas both have a very large concentration of Nigerians though. So, I hope some of the Naija folks based in those areas can chime in and offer some advice before you travel date.

You may want to look into taking a trip to Disney in Orlando Florida. Your kids will certainly love that. It's not close to Houston though. So, you will have to fly there. If I may ask, can you change/cancel your tickets and fly into Orlando/Miami Fla instead.

Do you know anyone in Houston? If so, they will probably be in the best position to give better advice. I believe there is a theme park and water park in Houston, I am sure thay have a zoo, and the children's museum.

It's a total ripoff that has absolutely nothing to do with distance. From the US you can travel to India, South Africa, and places that are farther than Nigeria (and not in West Africa) for less than you can travel to West African countries. It is total exploitation of countries that do not have their own airlines that fly these international routes. It's mainly the lack of competition and because they can get away with it.

An IDE certainly makes you more productive, however for a complete beginner, it's actually better to learn Java without using an IDE. A basi c text editor such as textpad or Notepad++ is better. The IDE automates things and does some things for you that you may need to know how it works outside an IDE. path/classpath settings, etc. Having said that, it's better to use an IDE once one gets bas the beginner level.

I can imagine how difficult this is for you. It certainly seems like your husband does not care much at this time. I will not be surprised if he is already seeing someone else. I'd suggest you do what's best for you and your baby.

I have used AF from Chicago to Lagos 3 times. I was quite satisfied on all occasions. In my opinion, I put the service I got from them in the same category as what I get from KLM, BA, Lufthansa, etc.
