WebmastersRe: Ie8 Recovers All From Google Chrome! by Cactus(m): 2:51pm On Mar 30, 2009
No love for IE? Give IE some love.

@poster, it is just like saying Microsoft Live search is better than Google search

1. The last time I ran a search in on Microsoft Live must have been 3 to 4 years ago. I hardly visit any MS related websites.
2. I dont know who uses Microsoft Live search as their primary search engine.

Microsoft is losing out gradually. Once considered untouchable, now on similar playing field as other tech companies.

Though if i get a job offer at Microsoft, I would probably accept for the experience and the industrial significance.

I was talking with a friend today and she was talking something about before she used to understand islam and why women cover themselves but when she became a christian she doesnt accept it any more that is it bondage.

So I decided to share this article with her

Abrahamic Religions - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abrahamic_religions

I doubt she will read it but pretty interesting. For those who feel they know about their religion, it is a good read.
oga cactus,

You gotta give it to her though, simply for her dedication.  Was she ever interested in web dev? If not, what triggered the interest?  9hrs a day? No job?  Is she learning web dev as a hobby or to go into biz?

Questions, questions.  Answers, answers wink
Today is Saturday, I came out of the room around 10am, I see her sitting in front of the computer. I had breakfast, then around 12.30pm I went to take a nap. She was still sitting chugging along. Came out around 3:45pm and she is still typing.

1. She did some work in computers before but was never interested in web dev.
2. There are some books she wants to put online using her own designs instead of someone else's
3. She is just learning for her own private use. She is not going into commercialization.
4. I intend on giving her a sample design to create for test.
5. I created a monster.

Now she is talking about learning the basics of

PHP = understanding level
Mysql  = average proficiency
Javascript  = full proficiency

For a couple of months, one of my roommate has being questioning me about website design and develpment. So finally I sat down and talked about how things work. This talk was on Monday. Then on Tuesday, I gave my roommate my development computer and since then has being spending at leas 9hrs a day staying up late night till around 2am trying to figure out things. So today is the 4 day now. Then my roommate asked about blogs and gallery. I then said you can make your own or use wordpress.

Asked me about wordpress if the design she made will work in wordpress then I said no that you need to add the wordpress template variables. She almost beat me to death. Shouting that why did I allow her to spend so much time trying to figure things out when it is only a blog and a gallery she wants. I was like you have being doing great for the last couple of days now you know what to expect and appreciate the good works of people who continuously try to improve and make easy web development for everyone.

She is still continuing will eventually move on to wordpress templating.

Eh eh eh eh pretty dedicated though.

4 days and counting. I would like to post a screenshot but she did not give me permission to do so. Sorry folks.
WebmastersRe: 100 Best Developers In Nigeria? Says Who? by Cactus(m): 6:54pm On Mar 12, 2009
It is quite difficult to rank people because each person has his or her on skills and interest.

If they want to rank people in terms of their skills maybe they can sort of give a problem and ask contestant to solve for speed and efficiency.

Well ranking web designers/developers is sort of crap really it doesnt matter that much. For those who care about rank
ProgrammingRe: I Need Your Suggestions About This by Cactus(m): 1:35pm On Mar 12, 2009
1. Ask them for their location (address / telephone number / hours of operation)
At least depending on where they are you can find the company just in case

2. Ask for a list of clients they have worked for maybe at least 5 clients.
This should indicate to you what type of business they do depending on the quality of clients

3. Ask for list of sample works. The more samples you get there better.
You can estimate your expectations

4. Ask them stupid questions. eg How do you start a computer?

5. Dont pay 100% upfront. Pay in installments. maybe 40% to start, the remaining 60% at end of project

Cant think of any others

Good luck

Isnt it weird that there are no sampling of works done by each person?

This is just like me saying, The best people that know how to cook in nigeria, then i ask people to nominate and I just people from the sample. There is no discussion about the metric used in assessing each person.

BS

WebmastersRe: How To Make Pics Uncopyable by Cactus(m): 2:36pm On Mar 06, 2009
It is so funny that people are suggesting placing the image as a background. If you can read css files, you can download the image. If you know how to use "View Background Image" you can download.

IMPOSSIBLE TO PREVENT COPYING. IF YOU LIKE SPEND HOURS TRYING TO DO IT. YOU WILL SIMPLY WASTE YOUR TIME.

I did something previously for a nigerian music site. They had a flash player. and I really wanted download as many songs as possible.

Luckily I could read through the embed code and tweak somethings and i was able to get a link to one song then I tried a couple and I realized pretty much they were numbered from 1 - whatever. So I can just take a link and attach a number then I can download the song. simple

Protecting images is futile. You can digitally sign them to know you are the owner but they can still be stripped that is if the person wants them stripped.
WebmastersRe: Planning To Go Back To Nigeria Need Your Opinion by Cactus(op): 11:06pm On Mar 05, 2009
I planned to post an update when I reach a major milestone.

Spoken with several people in Nigeria and out, and read the recommendation of people on this thread.

I am primarily into data warehousing, ETL.

The market in Nigeria for this not as good as what I would expect. Looking into Canada and Asia though. I should get something hopefully within a month done interviews and have more coming up.
ComputersRe: Need Help Please - My laptop keeps shutting down by Cactus(m): 6:19pm On Mar 05, 2009
well, knowing what the message says would help

Try restarting and looking carefully to get a complete error message or just this part

0x800*****
or
0x800****

restart and find the remaining 4 or 5 characters that would help

The problem could be one of many errors. Quite difficult if no additional information would be provided.

Some may say, reformat the computer but that is not a solution for now.

or

If you have a windows xp disc, try doing a system recovery to fix the issue

If you code to disable print screen or other key combinations.

Well, I can remap my keyboard, so spending time coding is useless.

How about taking a picture with a digital camera of the screen and uploading it back to the computer.

anything is possible if you want to get the picture so dont waste your time. it is futile
WebmastersRe: How To Make Pics Uncopyable by Cactus(m): 1:55pm On Mar 05, 2009
You cant stop people from copying.

1. as previously said, view source
2. disabled javascript
3. print screen

Impossible to stop people from copying.

Even if you digitally signed the images, well if a person does a printscreen. Pretty much they have a copy. Then you can talk about watermarks.

Pictures can always be copied. You cant stop users

I was in a class last week. And a new girl came in and she was like where are you from? I said Nigeria, immediately the other American guys in the class started talking about 419 emails they get, the people that have fallen for the scam, and how predominant it is around the world.

I was like well yea we have our problems what about people like Maddoff and stanford that scammed over 50 billion dollars? I doubt if both of them will go to jail.

If in an office in USA, I embezzled, maybe 2000$ or less, I could lose my job and get prosecuted possibly end up serving time in jail. but these guys may get no time to serve.

It was disheartening. Terrible. imagine the first thing people use to associate with an entire country?

Nigeria needs big help.

I read a thread in the sports section about Michel Obi and others seeking English citizenship. I don't blame these people switching or adding nationalities.  what does one expect to happen?
WebmastersRe: I Need Help From A Good Web Developer by Cactus(m): 10:02pm On Mar 04, 2009
I think September 2007, I got a project in New york to extend a site add oscommerce.

After looking through the main site that show the product details, I told the owner, I can help you redo the main site, it will look exactly like it does currently, and it will be easier for you to change text, graphics, or styling as you want.

The guy that did the main site in flash he is pretty good but when I asked him to send the .flv there was no use of external files. pretty much everything was placed in frames.  Eventually the owner of the site was like you know what, dont worry about that now, just include oscommerce to be functional finish.

After a couple of months, oscommerce was up and running. And a couple of weeks later which was then around August 2008. she called me and asked. dude, would you still like to change the main site to text based instead of flash.

Though it would have been pretty lucrative I declined. I gave the offer on the table before starting, analyzed the previous design. But by the time she wanted me to do it, I was back to school so no time.

So for that client, obviously she was nontechnical but the designer she got pushed her to use flash without talking about options and design techniques.

Well, designers/developers though would like to get as much money as possible, I feel they should be ethically responsible to lead their clients.

Now, I have not done any web dev project in quite a while, and I am seriously hoping I dont do any website related job. clients dont really appreciate the effort put into the work. I have the patience to work with clients. Just feel ehn not something I would like to be doing for long.

1. client request
2. gather requirements
3. negotiate
4. mockup/storyboard
5. approval.
6. code/develop
7. present work done
8. implement requested changes.
9. implement requested changes
10. repeat 7

arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Why do people use flash when it is not needed?
WebmastersRe: First Public High School Web Portal For Niger State by Cactus(m): 8:19pm On Mar 04, 2009
I was involved in the planning stage of a project that was targeted to Nigerian universities. I left the project because of my school work and dont know the status of the project.

Based on the business plan of the project, if it could be implemented, it would definitely be of great benefit to Nigerian universities but difficult to get approved.

The Nigerian education system needs an overhaul. Nigeria needs an overhaul. It is quite difficult to be up to par with kids of the same age group worldwide. My roommate's child he still in kindergarten, at school they do their classwork on the computer. All assignments networked and a student can be easily tracked from kindergarten to graduating high school irrespective of which school he or she attends.

It is pretty amazing but for the Nigerian system, other things need to be functional before a solid system like this works fully. Except the government is looking to spend hundreds of millions of Naira or outsource data centers and adminitrative duties.

I would prefer the govt to setup all the infrastructure locally, definitely need to get the issue of energy supply fixed. At least with a local system, good, competent, professionals, who are currently seeking jobs in Nigeria would have the opportunity to work.

Using Joomla, Blackboard, Angel, other proprietary academic solutions or open source is a step forward. I just hope that they have a vision for 20years down the road. Migration would be a tough challenge if a good plan is not presently on the table.

@KunleOshob

Your arguments and mine are pretty much the same.

I mentioned why not give them out for free to help people. Why take advantage of the congregation in order to push forward their personal business.

Since they are there to help people, why take the money people need and line their pockets. Knowing that the people are suffering, struggling. Why ask them to pay for whatever items they are panhandling.

Request:

If anyone can provide picture of the berger paint tin can helmet, I would love to see.

I am in no way attempting to defend these above named people or individuals like them. It will be proper to say that, aside from their religious responsibilities, many of them do have their private businesses, e.g. authoring books. Their popularity in the religious realm could serve as an advantage for these people to sell their products.

It is sort of a cycle. a pastor that writes a book for example.

Religious Leader - main responsibility - spread the world, help the needy, etc
Religious Leader - private business - book writing - to be sold to predominantly members of his/her congregation

If a religious leader is to help people have a better understanding, why write a book and sell it since not all may have the money to buy? Why not give it out for free so that everyone could benefit?

Some have legitimate businesses, so do not discredit anyone of them. Some or most have used their fame to push their private business
