These bank CEOs' scam figures make me dizzy and tongue-tied.

No doubt, we are predominantly a nation of scofflaws - Shine the "forensic audit" lights on personal lives, student union governments, school administrations, small private companies, etc, and only a handful, if any, will stand above board.

I support Mrs Waziri's (EFCC) recommendation for psychiatric tests for the nation's leaders - Problem is she may not even pass herself!!!

This is sobering.

"Best friends" are so retro for me. . .Last time I had one was over 15 years ago. I just treat everyone like friends, but keep 'em at arms length. Works great!

Nice contribution.

I have found that many BSc/BA holders do not know about high flying HND holders, and therefore perpetuate the baseless stereotype of superiority. A thread like this may help broaden the prevalent narrow mindset, right?

Major universities in the West gladly show-off pictures (on school websites, etc) of grads of their programs who hold top positions in the society.

If any higher institution needs that level of exposure in Nigeria, it's the polytechnics!
OND/HND holders are discriminated against in both public and private sectors.

Whereas, in my experience, these poly guys/gals are amazingly smart, e.g. many OND/HND contemporaries passed our occupation's professional exams 3-5 years earlier (on the average) versus those of us with univeristy degrees.

Action: Do you know any HND holder who is a high-flyer in his/her calling (in or outside Nigeria)? Please list. . . No Mickey Mouse names oh, abeg  cheesy

The taste of the pudding is in its eating, no be so?

I'll start off - Mr. Wole Sodipe - Executive Director at Bank PHB. HND from Nassarawa Poly (Did I hear someone shout, "Nassarawa of all places!". . . Na you sabi o. . . That's the point of this post) Let's roll, people!
Career › Re: Is This Humiliation Or Something Else In Access Bank Plc? by canuck(m): 3:14pm On Sep 24, 2009
There's a lack of clearly identifiable positive distinctions between naija's universities and polys, except for negative stereotypes, e.g. that people end up in polys having failed to secure university admissions. That's pathetic.

Having said that, my experience shows that OND/HND holders somehow believe this steretyping and generally lack confidence.

Finally, I think HND holders will benefit from role models in the society, who are high flyers in their industries.
Family › Re: Is Having Children Abroad Best? How Many Children Have You Had Abroad? by canuck(m): 10:44pm On Sep 23, 2009
@Poster

It's one thing for your future kids to have US citizenship, and another to have them raised in Naija.

Why would you live in the US since age 10 and even consider the thought of having your wife deliver kids in Nigeria (or France or Germany)?? I'll bet a buck you're not currently in a serious relationship, otherwise, your babe will give you one dirty look at such a ludicrous suggestion. S Central is definitely not a place to plan to raise kids. . .Glad to know you turned out OK.

Parents who send their kids to naija boarding schools have no clue what they're exposing their kids to - From personal experiences of my contacts who did so, only about 20% of the kids turn out well, The majority of the kids are wayward because papa/mama dey obodo oyinbo dey slave for dollars/sterling.

It's a small world indeed - I have known him for over a year now. How did he "419" you?

His contact details are available at http://www.cefard.org/Training.html, where the refund policy is listed - Are you saying you had a right to a refund and he failed to do so? When you contacted him, how did he propose to redress the situation?

Splashing an individual's name on the Internet (while you conceal yours) and making such damaging accusations is pretty serious.

PS:

please nairalanders i need your support on how to travel to canada based on training.how do i go about it.
I just discovered your post shamelessly seeking for a way to enter Canada through "training"! You go reach Toronto finish come declare refugee say the ghost of Abacha wan kill you!!! YOU are one of those spoiling naija's image abroad jare - Have you not heard about the Canadian Permanent Residency Applicationhuh I guess it's not attractive to you 'cos it's legal! Barao! You will continue to be a 419 magnet until you decide to do the right thing, the right way! Yeye girl. Mugu.

@ Poster

You describe your "friends" as unserious, conniving, unreliable, deceitful, bigoted, naive and inconsistent - What was your question again? I have no idea why you keep company with them, only you can tell; they probably make you feel you belong.

They are going down, whiteroses, and they're taking you with them, if, like iice said, you don't cut them lose! Your vision obviously conflicts with theirs.

PS: Your writing skills are definitely not up-to-speed (not an insult). Like chiejik said, this is the time allotted to you by life to study. You need to feel comfortable being alone, so you can get to the top of whatever you want to be in life.

PSS: In the words of billionaire Warren Buffett, "Should you find yourself in a chronically leaking boat ("frenemies"wink, energy devoted to changing vessels is likely to be more productive than energy devoted to patching leaks."

I am definitely on the path where even the eagles have not seen - It is an adventurous path.

On this path, everyone around you can sense that you are a man/woman of purpose and direction, and, surprise, most people will wish you well, and many will go out their way to help you. That's what I've found.

@ Poster

Your one-week deadline ended yesterday. . .So, what made it into the policy?

Here are a few suggestions (in addition to salary) for the compensation section of the policy:

1) Show-Up-For-Work Allowance - Paid daily for people who actually come to work, not just draw salary
2) Smiling-At-Work Pay - If you're having a bad day, you're doomed
3) Poise Pocketmoney - Your steppings and pose must be professional
4) Idea Stipend - Remember, there are no foolish ideas
5) Boss-Favourite Grant - You know those bastards get it anyway, so put it in the policy

I could go on, but let me stop here. . .You are most welcome  grin

I found out that most young people are in a hurry. They are not committed to the job, they just want to ride a car and have stuff. In my profession, without commiittement you cant survive a week cos you see so many things.
I guess poverty and unemployement makes people to settle for anything without actually chosing a career. I was lucky i always knew what i wanted to do and am doing it right now, its tough and challenging but its worth every minute of my time, money and energy
Plus too much nollywood seems to make them dull and dumb. They have ideas you dont want to know about, most believe that some one from somewhere will just come and change your life and you dont have to work for anything
Interesting thoughts, aisha2.

I suggest you find a way of detecting such unproductive mindsets at the interview stage. If you're the headhuncho, resist the temptation of making an instant hiring decision - Meet the fellow 2-3 times.

I have learnt that it is better to fire people upfront (i.e. at the hiring stage), than at the backend (with its attendant collateral costs to the business).

On a serious note, keep it going iice; Energizer Bunny never jam. . . e no go see your breaklight.

OK, more seriously, I truly admire such drive in professionals, male or female, though I am on the calmer scale of the spectrum. However, if you work in Naija, you may have a revolving door until you find your rare fit in a subordinate. Don't you realize how you sometimes lose your cool with slow NL folks? Wrong! Wrong!! Wrong!!! Why do peeps love corner-corner?!

She is taking a shortcut that will leave her shortchanged. CIMA (or any other designation) is not designed to replace the extensive curriculum of a bachelors degree in business related disciplines. She will be left with a massive hole in her understanding of business and non-business issues.

I have come across people who took her route - They lack comprehension, multi-disciplinary thinking and confidence, in varying degrees.

She has her whole life ahead of her. Professional development is a marathon, not a sprint - Person no suppose hurry lick hot soup o.
