visiting the U.S. as a guest of MIT.
The 15-year-old is a self-taught
engineer, who has never taken an
engineering or electronics class.
Combining scrap metal, baking soda
and acid, he created a battery to
power his family’s home. He also
broadcasts news and music as DJ
Focus on the radio, using an RF
transmitter he created.
Kelvin is the youngest invitee ever to
MIT’s Visiting Practitioner’s Program
for international development– and
watching THNKR’s look into his trip
you’ll understand why. The teen
scours trash bins for spare parts,
which he uses to build batteries,
generators and transmitters.
MIT doctoral student and fellow Sierra
Leone-native David Senegh recognized
Kelvin’s talents when the two met
through Senegh’s non-profit Innovate
Salone, which supports high school
students looking to solve the country’s

the snake is a drum.
Not Koun Samang's dad, who found
a python in his baby's bed and
sweetly returned it to the jungle,
presumably while giving it a back
massage and singing it snaky lullabies.
When the snake showed up again, he
did it again . Three freaking times this
happened, before he just gave up
getting rid of the thing and welcomed
it into the family, deciding that the
snake had a thing for his son.

Seven years later, Samang and the
now-giant snake he named "Lucky"
are going strong. Did we say "strong?"

Today the snake is over 20 feet long
and could easily eat the boy ... or a
dinosaur or a house, if she felt like it.
But it doesn't. Samang considers the
serpent his sister, which is pretty

West African regional leaders have
agreed to deploy 3,300 soldiers to
Mali to retake the north from
Islamist extremists.
At a summit of Ecowas, the group's
chairman said it was ready to use
force to "dismantle terrorist and
transnational criminal networks".
The soldiers would be provided
mainly by Nigeria, Niger and Burkina
Faso.
Islamist groups and Tuareg rebels
took control of the north after Mali's
president was overthrown in March.
Ivory Coast President Alassane Outtara
told reporters in the Nigerian capital,
Abuja, that the soldiers could be
deployed as soon as the UN approved
the military plan.
He said he hoped the Security Council
would approve the plan by late
November or early December.
