chizagi: top quality long lasting doors Hello Sir. Please I need your advice. I need to buy a bathroom door for my MasterBath and I have already put PVC doors in other small bathrooms. I am considering American panel steel door. Or do you have another in mind? The bath is large such that water might not get to the door easily. What is your advice and which brand/price should I consider so as not to buy fake. I am in Orlu as we speak. Thanks |

I share same thoughts with you. In my build the visitor's toilet is outside and the entrance is close to the main entrance door. It is very much accessible to those seated in the compound where I prefer most activities to be done...in the villa is diordaves: Why am I not comfortable with all these toilets opening directly into the living room? Is something wrong with me?
What if the visitor is doing number two loudly, what will happen to occupants in the living room? What if the number two is very smelly, will opening the door after operation not assail the sensibility of the occupants of the living room? Will female visitors be comfortable going into that toilet and coming out to the full glare of male occupants of the living room?
Why should a toilet open directly into a living room? I don't know why I don't get it as it seems to be a popular choice. |

gbadexy: Painter/screeder said screeding before tiling so that the floor won't be messed up. Apparently they can still tile after screeding. The tiler said screeding should come later so that the screed on top of the skirting will be smoothened. Else the screeder will come again or you DIY And the dried screed on the tile can be soaked and washed away easily. |

You are indeed a veteran in the business. The prevalence of wire theft in my zone is so high that wiring shall be done just before painting and cleaning. Just stocking up on wires for now. spyder880: You are right, doing your wiring before the ceiling makes for a smooth work all through BUT the fear of wire theft can make one to put off wiring till later, despite the risk of the ceilings.
Because of the number of workers that work in the sites between the time you wire and the time the ceiling is later done, theft of wires can occur. Theft of wires is very easy and quick, and could be done by even those who are not trained as electricians. The cost of wires now is an added incentive for thieves.
So I go ahead and so my ceilings, and my ceiling people always tie them with enough supports to avoid any damage. I then do wiring as one of the last jobs on site when most people have left the site, just before painting.
To ensure there are no blocked pipes, i bring the electricians to phish the lines and confirm that all lines are through before we start plastering. Thanks. |

Okay then I guess the pillar and front finishes should be top notch. Thanks as always with your valuable tips. n3xt: The facade of a house is the most important part of a building because it sets the style for the rest of the building.
I always love to create a great one.
You can achieve a grande look with a very cheap budget if you have a great facade. Most people will never get to step into your house but several thousands will notice a facade that makes an unforgettable first impression. |

Thanks Sir But I didn't say I will go for low quality in other areas (I could settle for above average finish...I am not mega rich). I did a mix of high quality Nigerian tiles and some granites in some areas. Not luxurious but very good quality. I only said I wanted one area I will go luxurious that would give the house that one huge appeal to those who enter it. n3xt: I once shared this before:
To your question, I can only tell you what I’d do.
"Guy, if there was ONE stage of this your build you were asked to put it a whole lot of your savings to make it the best and this build LUXURIOUS...what will it be?"
I’d focus on the form. I’ll ensure the framework is compact, with a good form factor.
- compact design - great facade - large windows
Building anything great and economical requires a lot of planning (on paper).
So the carcass stage is it for me. On finishes, I’d save on where I can by looking for value engineering but never to skimp on actual quality. |

Baba you have said a lot ooo I consider my plaster job well done and I feel the screed could come out nice. Thanks for the advice I appreciate diordaves: From a UK perspective, this is easy to answer: kitchen and toilets sell houses. A luxurious house is one with a fantastic top of the range kitchen with a well presented toilet.
A top of the range kitchen will be spacious (6x6m), with American double door fridge, a cooker range with six burners and oven, marble or granite or polished concrete countertop, microwave with wall and floor glossy cabinet units as a minimum.
In Nigeria we don't showcase our kitchen as such, so your living room should be top notch. POP is spot on. I'm not sure of the quality of your plaster work so screening your living room walls and carefully selected good quality floor tiles will nail it.
I know you said ONE thing, but don't forget your kerb appeal. This is very important. Your gate design, railing design, pillars, coping and interlocking will help tie the house together. |

Thanks for your reply spyder880: Plastering for me.
On plastering does the "fate" of the building looks lie. Mistakes could be made on the wall or concrete casts and corrected by filling or scrapping/chizeling, mistakes could be made on the piping and corrected, but a mistake made with plastering is not easy to correct, it might stay there forever.
The worst thing is that a good screeding work cannot hide a crooked plastering work, an expensive painting cannot correct a bent wall edge or shoddy plastering work. It's even worse when you have an eye for details, you will be seeing the bent and crooked lines daily! That could be very stressful |

Hello @diodarves, @next, @spyder880, @rootech etc
A friend saw my build and asked me a rather interesting question..
"Guy, if there was ONE stage of this your build you were asked to put it a whole lot of your savings to make it the best and this build LUXURIOUS...what will it be?" I was stunned and I couldn't answer. He told me to think about it...and I am still guessing.
Please if it were you, what would you say?
I am about completing tiling and POP is done.
All left to do (hopefully) are 1. Screeding 2. Painting 3. Toilets and Taps 4. Kitchen cabinets and wardrobes 5. Pillar designs 6. Electrical fittings 7. Furniture 8. Floor stamping and land scapping
NB: Entrance door is Nigerian metal door. This is a Villa house ooo |
