South Africa still exist today because the whites in their wisdom knew that it was untenable to carry on as colonial masters even for 1 minute longer.

In Nigeria, those that believe it is their birth right to rule others while others are expected to quietly submit to their dominance and perpetually remain their slaves in their own land will either change this mindset to allow Nigeria survive or we shall all enjoy the glut together.

2nd Mission: Begin to relentlessly hunt Boko Haram terrorists at night when they expect to be relaxing and using the captured women as s.ex slaves. Let them stay busy every night trying to evade the choppers than molesting captured girls.

Politics › Re: Enugu, The Pride Of The East. by ChimaAdeoye: 1:58pm On Sep 08, 2014
cjrane: I completely disagree that because one is your enemy you should not emulate best practices where it is possible. By your argument we should copy the second terminal because it was built by my state Delta and disregard the obviously better designed terminal because it was designed for Jigawa? That is being childish.

The Americans and Russians went to the moon because they imbibed their enemy (Nazi) V-2 rocket technology and improved upon it. The Americans were able to produce an atom bomb and win WW2 because they allowed ( their enemies) German and Italian scientists to teach them how to break up an atom and harness the energy into a massive explosion.

My point being that we should copy great designs as Chima mentioned no matter how we feel about the person. Sometimes, great designs are simply a product of ingenuity & taste and not necessarily cost. For example, Saudi Arabia spent about the same amount of money in building Riyadh and Jeddah as UAE spent in building Abu Dhabi and Dubai. But it is without doubt that the King of UAE was more keen on aesthetics and exquisite design, which made the UAE an architectural masterpiece compared to Saudi. Therefore, if Jigawa or Kano is able to do something right, you should imbibe what they did right and not necessarily have to reject everything out of prejudice. The meat in Chima's post was all about preserving land around the airport for further expansion as it grows. I don't think Chima was inferring in anyway that Jigawa was better than any SE state. That inference was your own
Thank you very much Sir!
I really did not want to respond because it is well known in this forum that I'm from Anambra and I didn't want to instigate another senseless e-war. Perhaps knowing that fact, he viewed my post from the prism of suspicion.
But as you said, my interest is that we should make all our project in the SE of the highest standard possible based on the available funds. Some governors simply build square boxes and a roof over it as public buildings! In America where i live, any public building is designed with great aesthetic appeal in mind, thus the entire country is dotted with beautiful well designed buildings, not just square boxes with doors and windows.

I have been singing praises of Chime because he obviously looks at the design of his projects and probably tells them to make it more aesthetic and unique, yet functional. Although Enugu and Ebonyi are the poorest SE states, Compare Chime's state secretariat buildings with others built in the SE and see what i mean.
Politics › Re: Enugu, The Pride Of The East. by ChimaAdeoye:
IGBOSON1: ^^^I've echoed similar sentiments in the past on the poor finishing at the local wing of AIIA, as well as the need to build one or two 4-star hotels around the airport area like we see in other cities around the world with Int'l airports!

I'm a perfectionist, and this is why i tend to complain a lot about the low standard and poor quality of projects delivered in the South East! I've noticed that the Enugu Governor shares the same high standards as i do (the state secretariat being a case in point), so i'm hoping that before he leaves office next year, he would have set the ball rolling concerning providing AIIA with most of what it needs to be a successful venture!
I completely concur with your statement of the usually low quality and poor-ugly design SE governors (EXCEPT) Chime usually settle for. I agree with you that Sullivan Chime's projects such as the Twin bridges at Ziks avenue, the state secretariat etc bear evidence of his trademark high taste and high standard. I have also regrettably realized that an ugly shape does not necessarily mean it is cheap! Some of our SE projects cost much more than projects in other parts of the country, yet they are not exactly eye popping. Imagine that the exquisitely designed Dutse airport cost just N11 billion Naira to build!!! If that airport were in the SE, it would have cost 10 times more and with an all concrete ugly design like in the second picture.

Airports require to have enough space to develop and reach their full potential. This takes time, and with time land poachers insidiously encroach on the airport land.Securing airport land away from land poachers in a growing city such as Enugu will be one touch hell of a job.
I think the greatest gift Chime can give to the AIIA is to guarantee enough space for it to develop into a regional aviation hub. This will be difficult as people will see the land reserved for the expansion of the airport as a waste of space. Chime should in the interim use barbed wire fencing to secure about 700-800 meters of land in front of the present 3KM runway and donate it to the airport to guarantee there will be space for runway extension when the funds are available. In this way, when the present runway needs to be extended to atleast 3.5 KM which is the global standard for international airports to enable safe takeoff & landing of the maximum cargo weight-laden Boeing 747s or airbus 340 huge airplanes to operate long distance cargo haulage flights to Enugu, there will be space to do that.
Likewise, the state government should also ban any building construction in the land on the airport side of the Ekulu river. The Ekulu River must be a natural boundary demarcating the airport property from Abakpa phase-2 being aggressively developed as we speak.
This area will be part of the airport as it develops into an aviation hub and will readily provide land for a parallel second runway which may be required in the future if the airport becomes very busy from being a hub.

The looming tragedy we have continued to observe since last year when the first international flight into Enugu occurred, is that land grabbers have invaded all the open spaces around the airport area, which will ultimately choke the airport of land for future expansion and rob it of the opportunity to become a true aviation hub in the future.

CFCfan: Yeah, you said what was on my mind. I didn't mean an underground tunnel; just a walkway that would link both terminals.
I'd prefer a glass cladding along with a roof. Provision should be made for special vehicles to transport aged folks within the walkway/corridor.
If you look at the satellite imagery of the site, a walkway or corridor connecting the international terminal to the domestic terminal is less than 60 meters and really should not be difficult at all.
Your point about old folks being able to be transported is well in order. Also the mention of battery powered indoor car to transport aged folks is well in order. There should be a comfortable way of transferring people who are too old or too sick to walk from the international terminal to the domestic terminal and vice versa.

CFCfan: spyder880: I hope the Chinese will construct a tunnel linking the domestic terminal with the international one. The tunnel will facilitate easier transfers from both terminals, thereby avoiding the mistake made during the construction of both MM1 and MM2 (Murtala Moh'd airport).
A tunnel will be too expensive and impracticable. A simple corridor with roof over it to protect people from rain will do the job. If we want to be fanciful, just wall the sides of the corridor or use glass so that it is air conditioned.

MOBJECTIVE: Items exempt from VAT in Nigeria include the following:
1. All medical and pharmaceutical products
2. Basic food items
3. Books and educational materials
4. Baby products
5. Locally produced fertilizer, agricultural and veterinary medicine, farming
machinery and farming transportation equipment
6. All exported goods
7. Plant and machinery imported for use in the Export Processing Zone
8. Plant, machinery and equipment purchased for utilization of gas in
downstream petroleum operations
9. Tractors, ploughs, agricultural equipment and implements purchased for
agricultural purposes.3

so cocoa, rubber and food produce which are exported do not help Nigeria. except the people/states that export them and through the minimal foreign exchange they earn nigeria. Shocker undecided

eaglechild: I am also against further balkanization.

Apparently this is not a very popular opinion, but my reasons are that we also need to build economically viable states.

Remember governance in Nigeria is expensive and state creation will astronomically increase recurrent expenditure which may not necessarily be balanced by revenue generated by the new state, this will only put further strain on our economy.
LG tier of government is moribund in most states so if you have a corrupt state governor, the state is gone and the grass root development is thrown out the window.

I am for creation of Anioma state and tagging it a SE state.
Stop using the word balkanization, the right word is re-organization to achieve equal representation.

Passion007 is right in his analysis. Nobody can deny that Abakaliki is what it is today because of states creation. The same for Uyo, Awka, Dutse,Yenagoa or even Osogbo. Apart from spreading development, States are also the basis for political representation, revenue allocation, siting of federal projects such as universities, Federal medical centers and many more. It is only silly of any Igbo to say they want to be under represented in Nigeria and receive the least amount of revenue.
There is a reason why the north is filled with states, even states that don't have enough population of two local governments in a state like Imo or Anambra.Yet, each of those states have equal numbers of senators and representatives as Enugu, Delta or Oyo. Those reps and senators are using in pushing where major projects are sited, who leads the house and how quickly the house will approve funds for projects in the north compared to the SE.

I am from Anambra and can say the new states will not benefit me and therefore I should kick against it. But the truth is that we will be short changing ourselves of federal representatives and senator who are needed to make our gradually fading Igbo influence and voices heard in Nigeria. We must have equal number of states with the other major ethnic groups in Nigeria to be fairly represented in Nigeria.

Keke don dey full Enugu small small.
Let it not turn to Owerri or Uyo situation.
Keke is actually a good thing compared to retrogressive use of okada motorcycles for intra-city public transportation. In the past, women who could not balance themselves on bikes often fell off with fatal consequences.

My only wish is that a SE industrialist will open a standard Keke assembly plant somewhere around Aba,Asaba, Owerri, Onitsha, Nnewi or Emene.Nnewi industrialist Ogbuawa that has continued to import useless motorcycles should seek how to import or manufacture new utility-designed keke which is more useful to the country. Keke should be continuously and ingeniously improved just like cars have been improving their models every year.

I am glad that most Keke now have plastic roof cover from rain and sunlight for it's passengers.
If Keke is properly re-designed to have a little bit more room and to be able carry light goods, it will not just be a good means for poverty alleviation because of its low fuel consumption, but a comfortable alternative means of public transportation in Nigeria.

Politics › Re: Aftermath Of Sanusi's Sack: Foreign Reserve & Excess Crude Account Rise Steadily by ChimaAdeoye: 7:53am On Aug 08, 2014
Sincere9gerian: Since the FG sacked the controversial former CBN governor, Mallam Sanusi, followed by the appointment of a new CBN governor, the nation has witnessed a steady rise in the foreign reserve and excess crude account. In addition, the naira has been relatively stable.

It will be recalled that before this period, the nation's foreign reserve and excess crude account was on a free fall. The foreign reserve fell from near $50 billion by end of 2012 to about $37 billion early this year. The excess crude account also fell from about $10 billion to a little above $3 billion within the same time frame.

However, the kicking out of the ENEMY WITHIN the govt, Mallam Sanusi, and appointment of a new CBN governor reversed the downward trend in both indices. The nation's foreign reserve has now risen to almost $40 billion. In fact, Nigeria’s foreign exchange reserves rose by $1.436 billion to $39.333 billion between July 4, 2014, and August 5, 2014 representing an increase of 3.65 percent over $37.897 billion recorded in July this year.
No more donation of the nation's resources to almjiris and trying to hide it by accusing the FG of stealing $20 billion dollars,

Really evil people.

spyder880: This university is large, there are places you don't need to go, like this road stretching into the bushes of Amurri town. Space for future developments.
Those brown duplexes in the picture must be part of the initial ( almost completed 30 duplexes) constructed as the "Professors quarters" at the very far end of the university campus. They were exactly the same plan and color.

In 2005, I had just been in America for 6 years, but I was still impressed at the scale and quality of the new university under construction by the Chimaroke guy.I was impressed that Chimaroke had the sense to spread development to the un-fenced far end of the school to safeguard the land provided for the university. I am sure with these many years of abandonment, the communities and prospective land grabbers would have started encroaching and building permanent structures in the university land by now.

Please ignore those useless boys trying to derail the thread by talking about sidewalks along a major road! They truly can't differentiate a street from a highway.

spyder880: Bank road inside ESUT Agbani.
Spyder,
Did you reach the back of the university where the "Professors duplexes" were built? I'm sure those must have been abandoned to lizards and snakes, while the university pays huge housing allowance every month to it's professors!

Although many will see the new construction in ESUT as something "wonderful", in my opinion it is a caricature distortion of what would have been a reference well designed and purpose built university in Africa. The new Nnamdi Azikiwe library in UNN was a vision almost as old as that university. Zik himself was said to have planned that library in the 1960s! Yet it was completed less than 5 years ago! But if you look at that massive library, you will see why it took so long to build and that it does not make a caricature of the name UNN.

Chimaroke had been exposed to great American higher institutions of learning and he sought to bring home to Enugu what he saw in America. It was obvious that such a world-class masterpiece institution of higher learning could not be built within a few years, so he built what he could and left the master-plan for others to improve on where he stopped.I think lack of proper exposure to modern trends abroad is the regrettable missing virtue with most people in positions of authority in Nigeria.

Politics › Re: Enugu, The Pride Of The East. by ChimaAdeoye:
spyder880: This is the newly completed faculty of engineering sciences. This building seems to be built by the Sullivan administration. I doubt if it has been put to use as engineering students are still in Enugu town, sharing space with IMT students at the Old site.

It is difficult for good things to thrive in Nigeria because there is no continuity in government. Hate Chimaroke as much as you wish, the fact remains that he laid solid foundation for ESUT and it's teaching hospitals. ....and in many ways set the stage for the present developments we see now in Enugu.

The Enugu State University of science and technology has every potential to become the African version of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as well as the best and most beautifully planned university in Africa. That will be cited as a reference point of how a modern citadel of learning should look, if the subsequent Enugu state governors adhere to it's master plan.
Thus, my disappointment with the governor Sullivan Chime that decided to rather put his own mushroom buildings than complete the world class buildings already started, but not yet completed in the university by his predecessor in office.

There are at least 2 or three big faculty buildings started by Chimaroke that are still uncompleted. One was supposed to house the Engineering faculty and the other was for Architecture or something. There are 4 massive students hostels for the initial phase of the university. Three for girls and one for boys. Due to lack of funds, only two had been completed while the other two (Seen in the picture showing the NBA basketball court) had reached 90% completion when Chimaroke left office. Nothing had been added to where Chimaroke left the hostels, infact, they are now hideout for cult boys. While 65% of ESUT students have to seek accommodation in nearby villages!
Why not complete those buildings in the original masterplan first before embarking on new buildings, which aren't even part of the university masterplan?
Just look at the ugly square grey building without any style whatsoever and a red roof they called "Faculty of Agriculture" which they added to distort the beautiful university master plan!

Thank you Spyder for these pictures. Nigerian politicians and governors would rather their children attend substandard universities in Ghana and obscure parts of India or Pakistan, than help build world class institutions here at home. I visited the new ESUT in December, 2005 just before the students moved there and saw these buildings in their pristine state. The class rooms smelled of fresh paints! I thought by now, succeeding Enugu governors would have turned this university into something powerful in Africa. There would have been spectacularly designed architectural masterpiece buildings, massive numbers of trees and flowers to completely transform the environment. But, alas! I'm reminded this is Africa where thin god leaders pursue their own disjointed sometimes counter productive agenda while they are unconcerned with the general good of the society.
