Actually, Chief Achike Udenwa built the secretariat as his only achievement in 8 solid years!
It is so shocking that Imo State which hitherto used to produce the best Governors and talented administrators is now the home of rogue regimes.

Dee Sam Mbakwe will actually weep in his grave if he saw the type of looting now going on in his beloved Imo. A place he developed into a shining example of beautiful sustainable cities with about N1 million naira revenue may be about N200 million naira in today's naira value! How Dee Sam Mbakwe built all he achieved with such meager amount still baffle me today.

geeez: I've been to Enugu severally and I must admit some of the roads are good

But it's not a particularly big city and the good roads are limited to the GRAs and layouts

But is it that the author didn't realise that the roads were dualized when he drove by in the afternoons?

Enugu is a low density city and there isn't as much pressure on the roads as you will get in a sparsely populated area by Lagos, Ibadan or Onitsha standards

I like the architecture of the Polo Park Mall too but every time I visit, I rarely see people even on Saturdays and patronage isn't fantastic.

Enugu is unlike the typical SE cities and doesn't have so much pressure on its infrastructure which makes it easy to manage

In all, I have to give it to Chime. He's tried
Dude, stop lying! You have NEVER been to Enugu.

It is easy to tell one who only go to places via "google earth maps" and those who have actually been there. If you have been there, you will know that google earth may give you names of the street but does not reveal the names of the areas or neighborhoods.

That is how you can tell someone who visits Enugu map constantly and only see Enugu pictures from NL and will think you now know the entire city. But the virtual image is different from physically driving inside Enugu.Just like i used to wonder why certain areas of London with abandoned derelict buildings looked better on the map than Abuja, but when you are physically in Abuja you will definitely know better grin

If you had ever been to Enugu physically and heard all the roads he drove on,you will immediately know he drove from Gariki toTrans ekulu and to independence layout and other areas he drove to. You could easily have imagined it was quite some driving to do. But because you don't know Enugu, you thought he only drove round the polo park mall area and drove to independence layout. That is why they say ignorance is bliss grin

Abagworo: The Nigerian Governors killed the LGA system and made the Chairmen useless. No Governor is free from that.
Nigeria does not need an LGA system. It is part of the disastrous copy cat attitude of our past leaders to import everything American wholesale, without adapting it to the Nigerian situation. The way we do monthly sanitation and cleaning out of gutters and dump the same smelly unsightly rubbish by the roadside. The next minute rain disperses the rubbish around the entire roads and city making it more dirty than it was before the sanitation day clearing of the gutters.

It will be better to reconstitute the Mayor sytem to administer cities and modernize the traditional rulers system to include town planners etc to rule ruleral areas, and fund these units to build projects in their communities than have the unmitigated looting of Nigeria through the LGA system. I need to know any LGA in Nigeria that contruct the local roads as they should, nor build new class room blocks for school children as they should. There is absolutely NONE!

Anyhow, my comment here was to praise the writer for his vivid comments on Chime's quiet transformation of Enugu. Indeed, the other SE cities should take a cue from Chime's transformation and build liveable cities. Fashola recently insulted Igbos feigning an apology when he stated that "He does not know why Igbos must come to Lagos" Fashola believes and rightly so that if Lagos can be transformed from also a cesspool of uncountable mal-odorous mini slums such as Makoko,Mushin,Ajejunle, ketu etc into a green garden state which he is creating now, there is no way the South-East states should not stem the decay and begin a deliberate drive to reclaim their cities and make them liveable again.I must commend Rochas for doing something similar in Owerri and Orlu, even though he makes more noise than his actual accomplishments. At least he knows flowers and trees need to be planted to beautify the environment after road construction. As simple and elementary as this sounds, many of our Governors sadly do not know this.

Anambra and Abia are SE most commercialized states. But commercialization does not mean a deliberate man made environmental degradation and devastation of the area as we have witnessed. We are human beings and therefore must strive to make our environment conducive for our good health and positive mental development of our children. These two Igbo States have the potential to become giants if only a small attention is paid to making the environment not just solely commercial but also more appealing and friendly especially in the key cities of Aba,Umuahia,Onitsha,Nnewi and Awka.

Edwike: You analysis of Ethiopian airlines is very very unfortunate. I have never used the airlines, but I do not have to concur with what you said.
First, Enugu route is a brand new route and Nigerian government does not lobby airlines to ply any route. Why didn't they (big airlines) come first. Knowing fully well that it will take some extra-work for any airline to break even with all the initial associated business risks as this is an unfamiliar territory. Ethiopian took the bold step and they are gradually making the route attractive and viable
Second, be reminded that the popular airlines you are thinking are secretly bribing and lobbying to stop AIIA. Concentrating everything in Lagos and Abuja makes there business more assured and very viable at the detriment of south-easterners. It is for thesame reason that ARIK basically is the only local airline that is on constant scheduled flight to Enugu making local airfare so expensive that middle income Nigerians rarely fly. They (local airlines) shared(kind of unwritten/unholy alliance) airports in Nigeria among themselves thus driving away competition.
Finally my dear let us all support Ethiopian airlines by all means to succeed because those western/middle-east airlines you are thinking will not come to Enugu at-least for now. They all prefer the status quo ie Lagos and Abuja as the only viable international airports in Nigeria because there business is better and assured. Enugu airport surely will eventually develop to the point when they will come, and I plead that we Africans patronize our own. Pay them(Ethiopian) back for making AIIA a dream come true.
I agree with you and i must apologize for using the adjective disorganized but we need to work on cheaper tickets to Enugu.
I must also emphasize that what i wrote was based on hearsay opinion of someone else, as i have never personally flown in their airline.

Of course i want Ethiopian airline to succeed in Enugu and I know they will because more people are gradually becoming aware that they can make their overseas trip via Akanu Ibiam International Airport,Enugu.
But, the reason why fake products is ever bought in Nigeria is "price". So, the more competitive the price to fly Ethiopian, the more people will see it is actually beyond foolish to use any other carrier than Ethiopian for their trips.

By the way, the suggestion to open up a city office in Onitsha is just on point to mobilize and dominate that market.

manny4life: At times, people like you need to shut up if you have nothing worthy to say. You had to bring Anambra into your rant, even if it's allowed in Anambra, is Anambra the only state out of 36 states allowing it? What you seek will backfire on you...Mpama.
Bro,
Nakwa echeki !

I love Peter Obi's sterling service and achievements in Anambra o, and i thank him for bringing civility and real development to the state in spite of ruling a most difficult state. But on this issue of Okada, he completely got it wrong! And surprisingly on this Okada issue, he has been as stubborn as Ngige used to be to suggestions from well meaning members of the public

Seriously, Peter Obi needs to ban Okada in Anambra! He could give a timeline when operators must upgrade their bikes into Keke Napep!
Yes, Keke Napep is a much better choice. Have you been to Onitsha general hospital orthopedic ward to see how Okada people have been maiming both young and old. have you ever worn expensive jewelry like gold necklace or earring and walk on foot in upper Iweka after coming down from a bus? Those petty thieves on okada will rush you and simply rush and snatch the chain off your neck or ear lobe! Peter Obi's response to the high crime committed with Okada was to ban high capacity engine bikes!!!

I heard someone say it will create unemployment and worsen poverty to ban Okada! Well, for the same amount of fuel a motorcycle will carry one passenger, Keke Napep will carry three comfortably and safely! Yes, Keke Napep is a little more expensive than okada, but you can imagine the multiplier effect on the finances of the rider eventually. It is like owning a real taxi and paying the fuel requirement of a motorcyclist.

Besides, criminals have continued to use Okada to make a quick get away after a robbery or even simply snatch your mobile phone and just disappear. India is one country that knows how to manage poverty with dignity. That is why they banned Okada (Motorcycle taxi) a very long time ago and replaced it with the rickshaw aka Keke Napep. Why shouldn't Peter Obi upgrade our state too and decree that for the purposes of mass transit, only Keke Napep is a lawful vehicle to transport Anambra people. Haven't enough people being maimed or robbed yet?

When it comes to providing "enabling environment" for a good quality of life, Chime is millions of miles ahead of Obi. Mind you I'm originally from Anambra o! Obi is concerned with just providing the facility where there is none and Chima will provide the facility, but with great style and taste. If a situation where one must sit down arises, Obi is like a man giving you a wooden stool to sit and Chime is like giving you a comfortable leather chair to relax in.They both solved the problem, but one solved it with style and dignity. Apart from the Onitsha stock exchange building, look at other buildings built by Obi, including the New Five Star Hotel being built in GRA Onitsha and the secretariat and look at Chime's building and his secretariat. The only reason i still support Obi until tomorrow is that he has a deep knowledge of what needs to be done to tackle hunger, poverty and general lack of development, but he will just build the square structures needed without any regard to aesthetics. grin grin grin grin

liberty300: Ever since the upgrading of enugu airport to international standard, there has been a series of demolitions of stalls along major ways in enugu. Today have seen d demolition of stalls around the mall and several places. The government of enugu state has also removed bustops along some major roads in an attempt to curb traffic jam. To add insult to injury, the state government has announced a total ban on Keke napep from enugu and claiming to replace it with a better, attractive version of d tricycle (which no one has seen). My thought was that the airport was a blessing to eastern region but it has brought the death of so many small business owners. Please, someone should let Sullivan know that he's hurting his people
Shebi na the same una wey talk say Enugu needs to clean itself up to host International airport.

How else will the Governor clean up the city and make it a decent world class city if he allows illegal shanty kiosks in unsightly places and rickety rickshaw to ply Enugu streets in the name of taxis. Those Rickshaws should be sold to Okada riders in Anambra where they are still allowed. grin

Jarus: To me, Fashola is the best public officer Nigeria has produced since return to civil rule in 1999

Others that posted (post) decent performance (by our low standard in Nigeria), by my reckoning:

1, Umaru Yar'adua (reversal of VAT, refinery sale, price hike, asset declaration etc)
2, Barth Nnaji (decent effort in power reforms)
3, Sule Lamido (good capital projects efforts, even if a bad politician)
4, [s]Rotimi Ameachi (Decent capital projects efforts in his state)[/s]
5, Godswill Akpaebo ( Even if I don't like his politics, I admit he tried for his state. I've been to his state; best raod network of all the about Nigerian states I have visited)
6,[s] Nasir el-Rufai (Not his biggest fan either, but I salute his efforts in FCT)[/s]
7, Nuhu Ribadu (You can argue he was selective, but you can't argue his victims were innocent. Plus he returned $15m Ibori bribe)
8, Lamido Sanusi (I commend his work in CBN)
9, Charles Soludo (His attention to ethics may be questionable, but you can't fault his achievement in terms of strenghtening our financial system)
10. Attahiru Bafarawa (I served in Sokoto state, and msut confess he did well for hsi people in terms of capital projects. Good roads everywhere)
11, Rauf Aregbesola (You can fault his politics - can be loud-mouthed, intervening in what doesn't concern him - but you can hardly deny his commitment to the uplift of his people. I was in Osun in August and the whole state looked like one big construction yard, road projects everywhere, despite meagre resources)
12, [s]Ifeuko Omoigui (Decent and silent reform in FIRS; enlarged revenue base for Nigeria) [/s]
13, Donald Duke: Decent performance, mature leader

These are the guys I can give pass mark (50%) of all the public officers (elected or appointed) since 1999. There are others I have herad or read about (e.g Kayode Fayemi, Rochas Okorocha, Peter Obi), but I'm not convinced yet.

Strictly my opinion as a watcher of events in the country.
Although you are clearly a biased APC man, please stop mixing the names of achievers with common criminals. It is an insult to those who have achieved.
Education › Re: ASUU: FG Stops Lecturers’ Salary (no Work, No Pay) by ChimaAdeoye:
[size=20pt][b]Thank God!!!

How can they be gaining while holding the nation to ransom and toying with the lives of the students entrusted to them?

How can they mindlessly refuse every appeal to work and get more that have been offered already N130Billion Naira

....and they simply said "NO !" .... afterall, they are getting their salaries while the lives of the students waste away.
If only university lecturers want N3 trillion, then how much is the entire country's budget? Is it only university lecturers that is important to a country? Where will the money to pay soldiers dying to stop Boko Haram from killing those lecturers,Doctors,Civil servants and most importantly development of the country and even those universities come from? If every dime in Nigeria should be paid to lecturers? Greedy B.asterds!

Let them now prolong the strike for another 6 months and lets see who will beg the FG first! Wicked lecturers !

Nigerians love to abuse democracy believing "democracy" is a freedom to unleash chaos on the nation and trample on other peoples rights while fighting for yours. If the Universities are closed, where do they expect the money to be paying their salaries to be coming from? If a company making bread goes on strike and stops selling, where will the money to pay them while on strike come from? Bank loans?

Therefore, the National Assembly must stem this rot in our system by legislating that no Federal Government employees shall be paid during the period they have not worked or on strike

Since every state now has a federal university, It is also time for the FG to hand over all the federal institutions to their host states and increase allocation to the states.

Politics › Re: Enugu, The Pride Of The East. by ChimaAdeoye: 9:29am On Oct 02, 2013
Well, the info i got from a family member who traveled with the Ethiopian airline last week from Mumbai India was that when they landed in Addis Ababa and waiting for their flight, there were low passengers both for the Lagos, Abuja and Enugu route. So they were given option to fly in 2 days to Enugu or join the Enugu and Lagos passengers into one flight to Lagos to fill it up. All the Enugu passengers were then put on the Lagos flight rather than spend 2 days at the airport.

AIIA needs only 2 reliable foreign airlines for now.The Ethiopian airline is highly disorganized and annoyingly expensive to be entrusted with the far-east route. The authorities need a reliable airline like the Turkish or Emirate airline to ply that far-east route and KLM/ Air France or Lufthansa to ply the Europe/ North America western route.
