BouharryArtikou:I had to go search for the main post as I didn’t want to quote wrongly and start arguments afresh. While we can debate all day about public fund, benefits and what one is entitled to, we can all agree that the conditions surrounding the government support shows it is meant for people finding it a bit challenging to meet up in some way and a good support will help them get back on their feet. We all have different views on this subject but I don’t think we should crucify each other for our beliefs. I believe you didn’t actually use a good opportunity that you are/should be entitled to. LOAN. If I were in your shoes what I would have done would be, get a loan from the bank to pay for the ILR fees, and pay the bank back in their payment plan. That option would have kept your earthly confidence (money) intact. You would have had you £10k+ in your account while the bank get from part of your future earning. No be say you de run, you go de for the country for years, them don give you ILR them don give you. One funny Nigerian saying: “I go pay no de go jail” Yes, a lot of us hate loans and all that, but we can’t deny the economy we find ourself is a credit economy. Loan help you build more credit here, plus institutions would be happy to lend you more based on your credit worthiness. To round up, I would say, just give 2 to 3 months, you will be fine when the salary alert comes in. And yes it’s annoying the amount we pay just to be here with our family. It’s even more annoying how much we contribute to the economy (tax), then still get to pay this crazy sum to be a member in the society. E go end one day. Pele, Take heart. Let the joy of say you can now begin “do contract jobs, then go long vacation and come back to start another contract job” put smile on your face. |

Goodenoch:Thanks. Will do that in the morning. The full remote working won turn me to vampire. |
deept:😁 |
deept:I see you are awake, any idea if it is needed to add passport photograph to DVLa form. I want to believe it’s just BRP if you are using BRP and nothing more. Right? |
Abeg make person help, this jagajaga wey DVLA write too much. Sey person need add photo with the return form if person de use BRP? Or na just BRP and send back with stamp. Abeg help make I send their form tomorrow. |
fitzjerry:I believe the main condition for PSW is that your school sends a confirmation to HO that you have successfully completed your studies. I doubt if how the school came to the conclusion is HO issue. They Trust the school do what’s right. |
Viruses:The bolded is a very difficult pill to swallow. It’s the best decision if no other means to get the money, But very very difficult to swallow. It’s far better than having a dent on their young fresh travel history. it’s very very hard. @farnet have you tried getting a loan here in the UK? |
Zahra29:No mind us. We wey de Scotland, enjoyment no de let us remember say other parts of UK have different rules. Scotland is 3yr n above for nursery and school is from 5yr except you want to jump the child, which I think is allowed. Then the child can start before 5 for school. |
Ayofemidara:School is for 5 n above. Nursery is for below 5. I believe next entry is from August. So application for a spot for entry in August is on now. It’s on a first come first serve order. So applying for them now will be the only way, don’t know if they accept before then. But I think if your child is 5 and above now, then you can reach out to your council. Don’t know if there is another entry time, but you may never know unless you reach out to them. |
Happy New year everyone. Thanks for making our stay in UK happier and worthwhile. Hope we are able to have something on the table to celebrate with, if not, reach out to people around you. Don’t hide anything, ASK. We shall all achieve our aim for relocating. A prosperous new year to all. |
iyatrustee:Hahahahahaha. 😅😅😅 at some point I started suspecting my new wifi, less than a month and I thought this werey dem don de block sites.. |
Application for school placement is open. Try to apply early so as to stand a high chance of your child getting placement. Also you can apply even if you don’t live in the council right now, but have plans to live there before August 2024. If you apply before March, you will get your response by the end of March. If you apply later, then you don enter battle of the earliest. Don’t know who need to hear this, but I don do the lords work this morning be that. 😀 |

Angela90:1. I don’t think so, lately (in the last 1yr), I have not been using binance daily. I believe maybe once or twice in a month. I just transfer USDT there to buy coins to hold for long or to do Naira P2P. I use Gate.io for daily trading and not as UK resident. Opened it with Naija details and document so I left it that way, when they prompted to confirm location I ignored. 2. If I am being honest, I don’t know anyone who gets taxed for crypto as at right now. There’s always been lots of talk around it, but I don’t think it’s been implemented. That said, I believe you will only be taxed if there are evidence to proof that you are into trading coins. Hence, why I avoid UK P2P or selling coins for pounds in any form. 3. Uphold is an exchange site that buys crypto for pounds and offer different forms to using your crypto for daily expenses ( like crypto master cards). I have never used them, but someone introduced them on here some years back and recently @abuhusna1 suggested it again. |
Thewritingnerd:lol. Had a funny experience, got D for a project. The course ended with the project and had two lecturers for the course. One lecturer and one prof. Wrote to the lecturer copying the professor about possible error in my grade. She replied with my score for each section. Thanked her and told her something seems off as I still don’t accept the mark from the prof section. Prof was planning vacation so wasn’t replying mail. Lecturer replied and said the reason I got a low score was cos I submitted an empty file. I replied her apologizing for wasting her time when i submitted an empty file. Prof replied and said he was impressed with how I handled the situation citing “student of this age don’t address issue in that manner”. He said he will remark my project if I could prove that it’s the same file I submitted. I agreed and he set up a zoom meeting. He called, I shared my screen, opened file, we matched date and time I submitted the first file. Everything was same. Went thru file location and when we confirmed it was same. He watched me move that file to him. We chatted for over 30mins, he talked about how students were well behaved during his time (I believe he’s in his 80’s or 90’s). Long story short: Man marked script and I got a B. I believe the context for contesting and how you present your contest will determine the outcome . Not forgetting that there are also lecturers here (like in Naij) who thinks no one should get an A (except God) 😂🤣😅 |
Viruses:Nice one. Congrats to you and wifey. |
abuhusna1:I believe this will be best, but sometimes people run into emergencies and want to risk it. I will rather get paid by Uphold and wait for whatever happens in the future (eg tax 😂) than UK P2P. I no fit risk my future for UK or any other country I move to. Any foreign relocation now will request for police clearance for last 5yrs and this includes any/every country you lived in that period. Now person don understand so many things. |
Angela90:I remember getting those messages 3yrs ago, but I can’t remember if I did change my location. Cos my currency still shows Naira. Not sure, but I think I ignored it. I would like to believe that was what I did cos the only way I withdraw is P2P. You can wait for another person to reply. Also be calm with the UK trouble thing, nobody gets into trouble just like that. As long as you are not doing illegal activities (money laundering & fraud) with your binance account, I don’t see any reason to be worried or get into trouble. If possible avoid using P2P pounds, there use to be crook some years back. Don’t know if they still are. I will guess YES. Some of the p2p experiences in the UK will be traumatizing for someone who’s new to the land. Welcome to the YouKay |
iyatrustee:What a very funny way to summarize the question. 😂 You bad. @Efftyy it’s illegal to drive with an expired licence globally. I will assume expired Licence means expired insurance. In the UK, you can be charged up to -£1k if caught. |
Susom:Thank you for adding this. This fits the narrative I want to paint as I will state the money is either a loan from sibling or assistance. So if I can have them credit the account for me, that will help with the narrative. I just need to keep receipts for future. Thank you very much. |
abuhusna1:No worry, we plenty for this table. The risk of trading makes it impossible to want to share anything with anybody. But please look into the tax thing cos you are meant to pay tax for any income to your account. And the fact it gets credited by Uphold means you are into cryptocurrency. Sometimes it’s best to pay that extra charge and keep a clean sheet. We don’t know where government will move with the whole crypto taxing thing. You know market is lighting up, the news will still start and they will be back to the matter. You know the UK government are looking for money now, they will explore any option to increase doctors salary. If they can insinuate that immigrants funds the increase, I don’t think crypto will be bad to fund it. |
abuhusna1:I don’t know if it was you or someone else that talked about this people before, but my concern is taxing. So I am against the idea of taxing crypto returns considering the risk level of trading already. I am always careful with any payment that can be linked to crypto source. I believe HMRC would expect you to pay tax for that money as that money can be classified as “return on investment”. And I believe you are to pay tax on investments/returns. The crazy thing about tax is, you can be ignored for 5years and one day you get a letter that you owe some crazy amount of money. That’s just my fear. This is a perfect process. But I don’t think the company will think twice to respond to request from tax agents for uk based customers. |

Thanks. Really do appreciate. I already have a LemFi account. Thanks for the info’s. 👏 |

Thanks for this. You just cleared my head. To be frank I am gearing more towards the lemonade part as i will feel more comfortable dealing with a company than an individual for so many reasons. For point 3, I will use 70-80% of my fourth-nightly pay and most like do my transactions on my payday since my bank credit my account with a message saying pay-day. This might push my completion time, but I am okay to move to early 3rd quarter for safety and security. One follow up question, any idea if I can have some else (family with same last name) pay to the lemonade account or it has to be credited from my own account. I will assume it has to be from mine (same account name) as the crediting/transfer process will be an in-app process. And also, any idea the limit to convert from naira to pounds? Thanks. You really did clear my head. |
Hi guys, Please I need help and advice from those who have good knowledge on UK finance and banking system. So I need to raise some money here in the UK. A little bit large sum of money to use first or second quarter next year. Now the issue is, the money I will be using is in Crypto and because of my fear of “future tax” and also getting paid by someone who is money trafficking(or trying to disperse illegally gotten money), I am not open to using the UK P2P. I have heard people talk about buying pounds with naira from Lemonade and I am thinking of exploring this option. So basically my plan is to sell my crypto to (naira) Naija, then buy pounds from lemonade. Don’t think there will be much difference as I will be selling USDT in black market rate for dollar already. My concern is will this be an issue for/with my bank? I believe the fact that I am getting money deposited from lemonade will reduce the risk and make it easier to explain it’s my money coming from Naija. Please those with the knowledge help with: 1. Is buying pounds from lemonade smooth and easy? 2. Is there a limit to how much one can buy (daily or weekly). 3. What amount will go smooth to my UK account and frequency to avoid raising banking brows? 4. Do you know of a better way to get money to UK from Naija (Naira)? 5. What’s your general advice? Please bear in mind I work in security and any form of legal issue will dent my record, hence why I don’t mind putting my money in journey for protection. Please free legal advice 😁. Help a brother. |
posted this on the student thread, but I just remembered that after admission and entry to UK, most people switch to this thread so am posting again here. If you are coming to Glasgow as a student with lesser work hours, instead of working at warehouses, target working at restaurants. In Glasgow most of the restaurants (don’t know of KFC n its siblings) share what is left of the day’s foods with colleagues/workers. This can help add to your feeding. Dont feel funny about it, it’s a cheat most student use (i mean people born and raised here). Most Small restaurant owners rather share what’s left with their workers than throw that food away. I repeat Most small restaurants do this. So here is the story, most restaurant make lots of sandwiches, cakes and pastries (even when customers are not in). They make them with the expectation that it’s gonna be a busy day. Whatever is left at the end of the day is given/shared to the workers to take home. This happens everyday and they don’t reduce the quantities they make the next day. It’s just standard practice. As a student this will help with feeding. Don’t stress about the sandwiches, it’s easy to eat salmon, ham and bacon, just add Ketchup and mayonnaise and you are good. This goes a long way trust me. It reduces you cost of feeding (if you are single) and helps you focus on rent. There are days when there are lots of things to share (especially raining/snowy days), those days you can store some in the Fridge. Remember frozen items don’t lose nutrients or grow spoilage, freezing purses the cycle. |

This UK can be challenging, especially when you have family [wife or/and kid(s)]. Very challenging when you come in and you have to adjust your standard of living (like jumping buses and trains) instead of your car(s) back in Naija. Sometimes this things make you want to give up and get you stressed. I don’t want to talk about job search, interviews and house hunt. This things take a toll and sometimes make us question our decision of relocating. But, if you can hold on and have proper planning, you will reap the fruits and wake up someday smiling. For those with wife/partner, it becomes more fulfilling when you and your partner work and get lots of savings after bills. The stress living in the UK as a new immigrant is worsening as people tend to work lots of hours and want to acquire so many things in short time. Things don’t have to be that way. Plan yourself, work with your own timing. Make personal decisions that favor you and your family. Avoid contacts with people in Naija till you are well to do and can give them what you know they really want. Have quiet times, plan and strategize on how to beat your hurdles. Go for long walks to clear your head. Work with your wife/husband in everything. This UK is sweater if you have and live at peace with your partner. Focus on yourself (or family if you are married). Work lesser hours and spend more time with your family. Distant yourself from anyone whom you have found to be putting some pressure on you (even if it’s your extended family). Go out with classmates and colleagues if you are single. Make Europe travel plans with them. Take things easy with yourself. Ignore Lexus advice on “rent money is dead money”. Make your own plans and live as a tenant happily. Lexus didn’t buy a house in his first 3yrs in the UK as well as Justwise and the rest ( I don’t know them personally but they fit for this line 😁) but if they did, they can correct me. Take things easy, don’t add to the statistics of Nigerians that drop down due to stress. You don’t need too much money in the UK if you live for yourself and/or family (wife n kids). Make long term plans rather than “pressured short term”. Na who de alive go enjoy their savings oooo. Take life easy. |
florixi:Last year I had similar situation, I sent a mail to the MP for my district. I expressed how the delay has affected me and my family. I told her the delay had made living difficult for us. Just google the MP for your district and contact him/her via mail. It worked for lot of people last year. I got my visa response in less than 1week after I contacted her. This is after waiting for I believe over 4months or 5. |
Phil46:Cool. But I will do the other way round. I mean write them for a payment plan and then start payment. Trust me, the person with 1k payment completed it 6months after the program. Them just write am as debt for him record with the school. One thing with this UK I have found out is, not everyone working in an office have perfect understanding of the policy. Sometime when calling, call like 3 different times (speaking to 3 different people) to proceed. You will be shocked someone else will give you a slightly different part of the policy that favors you. Request for payment plan sighting forex difficulty from your home country. They will set up a plan for you, then you start paying from your 1400. You can request for 6months. Try speaking to someone on phone to help out. Keep calling till you speak to someone who understands your situation. |
Phil46:Some universities carry on with just little balance left. My school then allowed someone with 1k balance graduate and get certificate. But the person with 2k was not allowed to graduate until amount was paid. I believe there is a fraction debt that can be accepted. I have a feeling less than 5% balance can be accepted. I may be wrong as that was the core covid period and the considerations/flexibility from organization were high. You can write your school to set up a payment plan for the 2500. These can be broken into 3 or 6 months. That will leave you some time to strategize the balance while you pay from your 1400 to the installment set up. No over stress yourself, you need your composure to pass and start work. |
