I read those things as well. I am yet to apply, but the two professors have agreed to supervise me and the international offices, after checking my credentials and qualifications, have confirmed I am eligible to do PhD research in their Unis. I have been asked to apply formally by sending my credentials via courier service to their address.

Thats good bro....what abt the big one....Funding aka Owo..you need to consider this too..

@Cindino20, many thanks for your advice. I have been working on that as well. I am yet to find a Nigerian student at the University of Innsbruck, Austria and the University of Technology, Dresden, Germany. I would have loved to get firsthand info from them. About the professors, they are both female professors with extensive academic research and industrial experience. In funding,my findings suggest that Germany has more funding. About institute's reputation, both are deemed good in waste management, while innsbruck is in western part of Austria, dresden is in east Germany. Sometimes, I begin to wonder why people here don't say much good things about east Germany. It gives me a course for concern as well, lol. Night life, night life... once in a long while isn't bad,it doesn't freak me anyway.

Always a pleasure to help.

Then we take out night life....abt Dresden..I heard its a beautiful city ...North/ East of Germany re nt that friendly to foreigners and also I ve read reports abt scarcity of Jobs around there too ( what I ve heard no first hand experience ...I really dont believe most things on the Internet and hear say...I think someone resides in Dresden on this board).

You need information abt the research group in particular

BTW do you ve the offers from both uni alreadY?

My people in Germany, please if you are faced with this options which one will you go for? A PhD research at Dresden, Germany or a PhD research in Innsbruck, Austria....

I will be glad to hear from someone that knows the cultural, social and economic conditions of those two cities.

Oga you re going for Phd....

Everyone here will tell you to come to Germany because they re Germany inclined. It will be difficult to get an unbiased answer here to be honest.

What I will advise you to do is Rank your choice in terms of

1. Reputation of research institute
2. Reputation of DoktorVater (supervisor)
3.Available funding
4.Cost of living in each city.
5. Life after Phd ( residency, Job opportunities etc)
6.Night life .. if U re into it

Since you re going for a research base course I trust you can make your own research abt the above points.

Do not make your decision base on mere say....also explore the option of communicating with phd candidate workin in both groups and get first hand information about things.

Dont make a decision base on "Austrians re loud, or d residents of a city re abnormal or uncivilised " (like everything I read on the internet these days I doubt this).make your own research and follow your heart.

All the best.

my man thanks for ur response .... its true its necessary for one to have a copy of his/her thesis. I had mine ..but bro my system crash so I lost the soft copy. All I have now its hard copy. So if should try preparing an abstract from it , can omit the data and graphs ? (that's the most important part of the work ) . Or what do you suggest I do ?

pls guys, ensure u save ur thesis and other vital documents like that in ur inbox as draft that's the mistake u made. Even u can duplicate them .

pls I need more suggestions on what I should do .

danke

Oga try dis...you can scan, save as pdf then convert to word...I hope it works...

Or simple just type the abstract ...your thesis shld ve an abstract...type it and send as pdf..u can do that in less than an hr.

Just saw u asked what the abstract shld contain...

Abstract.

First paragraph Motivation: what was the motivation of the work..what scientific question did you plan to answer.(aim)

Second block: summary of experimental method: how did you try to answer the aim.

Third block: Summary of result: Key result what was your findings...did you achieve your aim?...outlook: outlook of work. .future recommendation.

In all half a page to a page....you can add references if need be as footnote...

Abdtract can be in block so need for the paragraph or check to see the they need.

Bros write that thing well ...dem need am.

@Hampy,

Bros to be honest I would ve loved to ignore you but like the sayin goes,,na person friend dey tell am say e mouth dey smell...

Baba you ve nt handle this situation well....I tell you something, Sometimes we re faced with tough situations as young pple...our approach to things at that moment becomes the deciding factor.

I really dont know if things have changed but during my time you have to get to the embassy early..even if your interview is scheduled for 8am because you ve to been cleared and your documents checked..so you have to be there by7am or so, some persons get there by 5am man so you ve no case, by 7:45 you were late already so dont even go there claiming any right.

This thread has recorded abt 90% success rate ..Germany student visa is as easy as a,b,c ..get admitted, fund accoun,t go for interview, swallow some chill pills (waiting period) and boom visa ..If truely you wrote a letter to the UNHRC immediately after your interview that again is a no brainer bro..is this crack gettin to me or I find your story funny ..Like srxly you wrote a letter to the UNHCR,the Nigerian National assembly to complain poor treatment in a consulate for lateness abi dem nor gv u chair to sitdown..I guess your interviewer was nt sitting down too if you had to stand to do your interview...why nt politely ask for a seat there and then like pls can I get a sit or something...I m nt comfortable pls I need to sit my ass down ..you didnt..you went home to write a letter to UNHCR shocked..so when next you decide to write a letter complain abt hw our education sector is in rot hence the need for the exodus.

You see Eke07..that guy there advising you, I ve great respect for him you know why? is the way he keep his cool,IF i remember correctly last yr something went wrong with his sponsorship letter at the 11th hr..he didnt budge..he kept his cool and was encourgaing others..this year he has done his interview for over 2 mths and even when he had issues with his blocked account he kept his cool and till date he is still encouraging others ...thats the spirit of a successor..you dont achieve great things by playin the victims card..NEVER!

I hope your visa is granted in due time my broda but do us all some good by leaving some of these ***** at M.M intl airport in lagos..

Unfortunately, I support you on this even though he has a kind of point. And his ranting here wouldn't solve anything..I would be very glad if he can summon up the courage and say or send via email all the stuff he posted here... Though in a way, the Germans are kinda lenient. It says 6 to 8 weeks on the website yet they grant some visas in less than two weeks. Most countries won't even grant visa or listen to any inquiry you send until the expiration of this period. Who are we to blame for them favouring one and not favouring another?
Well it is a well known fact that most embassies in Nigeria treat Nigerians as shit, meanwhile when you visit the same country's embassy in another country, they treat you with respect. Moral of the Story is that, once you can just first leave the country, things will become very easy for you.

PS: I wonder why our Government are just being quiet about the ill treatment meted upon its citizens by these aliens. Well I guess they be like, who send them? Where are they going? Won't they sit back and continue suffering?
Chai.. I miss Abacha.

TodaY is Monday....I hope he has eaten enough "liver" over the weekend to muster the courage to make those points without equivocation and ambiguity.

Bro. I really don’t appreciate when people put comments like this up. Listen, there is nothing wrong with inquiring about the status of your visa application. Afterall, I paid the application fee. We have seen visa gets approved in 2 weeks or less - 9 days in Anvicola’s case. I contacted the embassy 5 weeks after my interview. I waited 5 whole weeks! I contacted them after my resumption date, just to inform them that my school had extended my enrolment. What is wrong with that?

You talk as if these people are super humans. Is it my problem that the Auslanderbehorde is not big or that they have so many applicants? I paid my visa application fee. All the applicants paid - They should employ more hands and deal with it. We paid for it! That’s how it works.

Come to think of it, my admission letter and acceptance letter clearly indicates my resumption date, it is also stated clearly on the visa application form that i filled, and i also mentioned it during my interview. The least they could do was to contact me before my resumption date and ask me to produce evidence of enrolment extension. I paid money for their services - I paid visa application fee - so i deserve the best of services. Emailing me 5 weeks after my interview, after i emailed them to inquire about the status of my application is not the best of services. Let’s call a spade a spade.

These people treat us as if we are secondary humans or inferior humans. And people like you treat them as if they are primary humans or superior humans. And that’s the problem. They don’t respect us. We respect them. I know it’s not just me, but do you realise that we are not even allowed to sit during our interviews? We stand on our feet while the interviewer sits - for 30 plus minutes… C’mon now! Why can’t they provide a chair? It’s their chair and we are not leaving the embassy with it. It’s just for us to sit and be comfortable during interview. Remember, we paid the visa application fee and not matter how small it is, it forms part of their IGR!

Guy…. I don’t care whether I’m rejected or not. I’ll appeal and if its denied, i’ll look elsewhere. I paid 9000Euros for my school fees, funded with another 8000Euros. That’s another IGR for their country!! If this situation presents itself another day, in another way, I will write to whoever concerned to ask about the status of my application. Fight no dey there!

Listen?? grin cheesy

Bros relax and take some chill pill..its barely 24 hrs away from Monday then you can go to the German Consulate and explain all these to them...also do not forget to go with your consitution statin your rights as Germans love to see proof .

In ur first post you stated that you contacted them telling them you enrollment has passed without attachin proof of enrollment extension.I suppose you know what that means..also tuition is free here, if for some reason best known to you, you decide to part with 9000 quids for any course in Germany ...thats your decision and yOu wont be treated prefentially.

Do not use the word "us" pls..if u feel treated less there is nothin anyone can do abt it my broda..durin my interview I was offered a seat...well that was 2014..

Also remember to tell them how you respect them and how you feel treated less..if possible put it in writting.also inform them about how your 9000 euros tuition fee and 8000 blocked account will contribute to their ecomony too.

The processing time for student visa is 6-8weeks depending on individual case ..maybe you skipped that part.wheb next you decide to apply for a visa read the processin time..some embassy (UK consulate here) stipulates that you apply 2mths to 3mths before travel date to allow for processing even if most times the processing time is less.

My advise to applicants still stand.. if its within this period(max. 8weeks)..do not disturb the embassy with mail or calls.. allow them do their job and do not come across as a desperate chap.

Peace pple

Goodluck with your explanation tomorrow...I'd advise you put all those points in writing and submit to them.if you dont care abt it...dont appeal....simples

They didn't ask for insurance. That's why i'm a bit worried. lol. So you mean i should just reply them with confirmation of enrolment extension and place a call to them? Without having to go to the embassy? Mind you, they have already asked me to come with my passport in their email - "In the a.m matter”.

GENESIS OF THE MAIL FROM THE EMBASSY:

I took the hint from SOCWORK to email the embassy and inquire from them about the status of my visa application. In my email, i stated that my enrolment had passed (Oct 1st & 2nd) and lectures begin on Oct 5th. However, I stated that the school told me that they will extend my enrolment but I didn't attach any documentary evidence to that effect (simply because I don't have it from the school yet as at that time). Now that the school confirmed my enrolment extension to November 9th, the embassy replied my email with the "In the a.m matter" mail asking me to come to the embassy with my passport. I might be wrong, but i'm quite certain that its a rejection and their reason will be - enrolment/registration deadline had passed blah blah. So you see, I'm in a fix here? Do i just forward my confirmation of enrolment extension to the embassy? or go to the embassy to receive my rejection and appeal? I don't know what to do.

Hmmmm another reason for people to relax...somethings just take time....the auslanderbehorde re nt that big and and they normally ve alot of applicants this period.

Advise to other applicants....be calm...

He told me he's starting all over again. so, I guess he's losing a session. However I think i've read on this thread before that someone transfered and didn't necessarily lose all his previously acquired academic credits. I don't know the procedure he took, I'm yet to leave naija, i'll ask him when I get there

If u transfer to similar course ...after admission u can request for recognition of some of ur credit points.

Transferin to similar course is what they refer to Higher semester I think...then u can move some of ur credit points ...I ve a course mate who transfered up to 30 credit points...he transfered from chemistry to chemistry tho' but he still has to write all compulsory courses here (3 courses) and his transferred C.P were counted as electives. He transferred because he wanted to study in English havin done his bachelors in German
..to ve upper hand in Job mkt.

But again if you re in Nigeria why nt apply directly to the sch instead of comin to Germany..spend a semester and then transfer to a new course..you will spend money...and if u transfer u ve to apply for a new resident permit...if the rules re followed u ve to provide another 8k euros.

Yea ....its normally advertised as a job (part time)...

I think what you need to do is search for research groups in ur field in Germany.

Check if there is open positions and apply.. if no open position you can contact the head of the research group and make enquires or better still send unsolicited application.

Most times they require one pdf file containing ur cv, certs, transcripts, motivation letter, list of publication if any, recommendation letter,...I will post the format later

Thanks man. The field is environmental and waste management. Why do you say self funded PhD is not ideal in Germany?

Because in my 18mths here in Germany I ve nt seen a self funded phd candidate...Its either you re on scholarship or a university employee..Truth be told graduate sch is no beans and your research will ve an impact on society so its fair for phd students to get stipends or part time contract (Research or teachin assistants).

Also the cost of living for a phd students is nt same as a masters student..you will get the semester ticket to move around after paying your semester contribution but I doubt if you will qualify for subsidized accommodation by the studentenwerk ( varies from sch to sch). Your insurance premium will also be different cos Aok will nt accept you as a student .and your health insurance will nt be 81 euros...Unless you opt for private which I strongly advise against.so you see the cost per yr will be above 8K euros multiply by 3.5yrs thats abt 28k euros...If most europeans re to pay this money they wont go near the university...they cant afford it simple as abc...you need to see the shock in my classmate face when I told him I had to deposit 8k euros in a blocked account before comin to germany..his response ur parents must be very rich ( fear nor go even let me tell am say na me fund myself).

AFAIK as a phd candidate you re required to attend at least one conference per yr ..and also make presentations and publish papers( Journal fees re on the increase )...in ur case as self funded student who will incure this cost?

Also the idea of you workin and doing a phd will nt fly....Phd thesis is an original research and requires devotion ...People who re funded and devote all their time finish their phd in 3 yrs, some more and take abt 6mths to write the thesis before the disputation...in total we lookin at 4yrs.

Excuse my rants....in Summary...

I understand your zeal to come over to Germany for a doctorate degree..but please do not allow anyone to take advantage of you...In a country where masters students writing thesis are been paid I see no reason why you shld start a phd self funded.my advise is this.

Search for more supervisors in your field and send unsolicited applications .......there is alot of money flying around in sciences..and you will get a position ..I m sure of that because you C.V must be good for your current supervisor to even consider you.

Search for new graduate schs and research insitutes and check open positions.

Check research insistutes like

Max planck
Fraunhofer Gesellschaft
Hitec

Visit the daad webpage there re loads of scholarhip offers there...your supervisor can apply for some for you.

I will check some for you and post them here.

I hope this helps.

P.S at this stage (after your masters) you deserve to be paid to read any material or do any research

The professor advised me to contact the international office of the Dresden University of Technology and inquire if I can start a PhD with self-funding. The international office responded that I can do my PhD in their university with my own fund. Having said that,it is still my desire to start applying for scholarships once I've started the PhD research. Hopefully, one will come. Also,if I get a research assistant position, then I wouldn't need any other job cos I will be paid for the position. I would rather use the remaining time to concentrate on my research than looking for a second source of income.

Interesting....if I may ask what field.....also check this webpage for positions

Wish you goodluck

The amount has nt been increased...the increment is Bafog payments nt blocked account payments..although bafog payments re normally used to calculate the amount needed for blocked account..it has nt been done this year

@Walesby, thanks for your response. The prospective institute where I will do the PhD is in Pirna,a small town that's 30 minutes away from Dresden. However, the institute is under the Dresden University of Technology. I would probably live in Dresden and commute to Pirna. Sorry to ask,do you feel there are job opportunities there? I am hoping my professor will offer me a research assistant position. All fingers crossed.

Well most pple on this board re mssters student hence phd discussion is almost non existent ...search for takeastep..he is doing his doctorate (probezeit) in Hamburg I think

Phd is viewed as a job in Germany..and phd candidates re employed by the uni or research institutes ( 50% or 75% TV-L 13)...some re awarded scholarships by Graduate schs( new sys) or bodies such as DFG, Marie Curie etc..I doubt if any sch will allow you to start a phd with private funding...cos it takes abt 3-4-yrs. In some schs it is stated that private fundin is not allowed this is done to prevent students from droppin out due to financial constrains.

If you re awarded scholarship you may nt be allowed to work ( clause of scholarship so you can concentrate on your studies) ..if as a research assistant in the uni you wont ve the time to work ( I doubt if its allowed) cos you will spend some time workin in the unu and the rest o n your thesis

So my advise is this, discuss the issue of fundin with your prospective supervisor

Also check out some scholarships using this webpage.

Hello Bremen guys, I am leaving in a few days and uptil now I have not been able to secure any accommodation. Not even a place to lay my head for the first few days. Please any tips? Thanks

Gettin an accommodation in Bremen seems to be tough....since u will be enrolled at Unibremen..I strongly advise you to contact the studentenwerk....

http://www.uni-bremen.de/en/international/your-stay-in-bremen/housing.html

All other hostels around...Galileo, Okumnische seems full booked with the exception of Fizz ( but its expensive 480 quids for a basic apartment).

Also try wg-gesucht.de

They dont reply mails...itd better u call them...I also think it will be easier when u get to bremen cos most times they want u to come view the apartment immediately or next day.

For a place to spend first few nights...use this link.

http://bremen.jugendherberge.de/en/Portrait

You can also contact Nigerian students in Bremen...they ve a closed facebook page tho..ask Nellyb to link u up.

All the best.

NB: I ve been searchin for an apartment in bremen for abt 6weeks now and no positive result.

What is the average rent per month for a 2bedroom flat? Can students work while studying in Switzerland?

I need help to understand these things before I conclude the visa procedures. Thanks in advance.

Imagine!!!! I was very nervous at the german embassy today that I was given a test to write. A masters student for that matter. Anyways, I have been nervous since about 5 days now, thinking too much about a lot of things and even money to fund d blocked account. Everything just jam , d person wey wan lend me the money talk say the money wey him dey expect neva show. Imagine!!! and my enrolment deadline na 9th of october, why I no go worry na!!! I'm been feeling so weak and down cos I already resigned from my place of work, wetin I go do naw!!! The german woman even say my aim is not clear enough, she asked me some questions which I answered but she wasn't pleased with the answers and she also asked some which I don't know , to be candid!!! Everything just tire me but I know say, their is an end but my expectation shall not be cut short in Jesus name, amen. At this point I hands up, #Jesustakethewheel

What you need to work on is the ease at which you throw in the towel...Life is tough u ve to be tough to survive..To me you have no problem the only challenge u have is the 8k euros simple...

there is nothin to imagine there, I wrote the test too in 2014, same with the guy who did his interview with me ...the outcome of the test is for the embassy in naija, if it is successful you documents will be forwarded to the auslanderbehorde in germany if not, they ask you to come get ur stuff ..if thats the case you can always appeal on grounds that you were not prepared for the test and all that, my friend did that and will be graduating soon.

I know its hard for you now..but my advise is look for the 8k and worryless abt the test or the interview and also try to grow some skin baba life is tough coming to Germany wont make it any easier..

all the best Man

Eke04seven..if ur frnd has paid the 15 euros all u need to do is chill ..and if by friday u dont get it tell your frnd to visit that same branch again.

Transferrin exact amount for blocked account can be tricky..sometime these banks ve their own exchange rate and u can fall short....durin my time I transferred 100box extra and the balance was there unblocked.

For the guy waiting for new confirmation letter .....I dont think u will get any...try to contact the embassy and ask if that 8400 was nt a typographical error...u can collect ur 360(unblocked) when u get to germany...

All the best fellas.
