Well, maybe a little effect on the pricing considering Glo just introduced Always micro, but that is not giving much up by way of price sha!! As for performance, I agree totally, the performance is still spotty at best. But its always relative. I agree with someone who said Lekki was amazing cos I was in Lekki a few months ago and MAN was it fast, but maybe it had something to do with the fact that the Glo 1 landing station is on Alpha beach, a stone throw away, |
I agree with you guys that comparison between countries is not very easy to do. But my bone of contention is that the sector should be privatised. Period!!! It will be left to the new companies to determine the prices based on the size of the market, price of gas, overheads etc, but the truth of the matter is that if we are honest we can obviously see that it will get more expensive because we will be almost developing the infrastructure from scratch unlike other countries who have had effective and efficient power infrastructure on ground for decades and for whom economies of scale have set in!! The same happened in telecoms, it was initially N50 per min cos these guys had to build masts, install equipment etc but now its as low as N18 per min( if ur on a contract line) cos these initial fixed costs are now sunk costs. In fact, if not for lack of electricity ( the problem this no electricity is causing ehn) depreciation of the naira and inflation, it would probably have dropped to N10 per min by now!! |
Nigerian's will castigate him, but he's saying the truth!! We must bite the bitter pill before things get better. Govt obviously can't improve the sector and private participation will only come into Nigeria in a deregulated and profitable environment, and N7 is just not profitable!!! We think about economic policy most times about the short term impact on our pocket, but what about the biliions of $ in FDI and jobs it will provide for people who may never have found work!! If we had no MTN, Zain, Glo, Starcomms, Multilinks, Visaphone etc and only NITEL, where would the people who work there today be working now ![]() The other guy says his bill is $130. Thats N20k+. Fine it's available, but if there is no light can you pay anything, especially if you have prepaid meters? So N22 * 0Kwh= N0, while N7*0Kwh=N0. Meanwhile, generator is roughly N42/Kwh, so doesn't it make sense to substitute N42 with N22 on the assumption that it will even be that expensive here all said and done, given our gas resources and economies of scale!! |
Like everyone has said, the speed you get depends on the distance to the mast, the state of the network at any point in time (if the network is busy for voice, how much more for data) and what is available i.e GPRS, EDGE, WCDMA, 3G or 3.5G. Having said that I have used both MTN and GLO and though MTN is not consistent and the connection goes on and off many times, for the moments that the connection is good it appears to be faster then Glo. Glo doesn't have connection issues, but even on their HSDPA, which I believe should be the fastest, it is still rather slow. Its ok for yahoo, sending emails etc, but for multimedia (videos, music, movie trailers etc), it is a no, no. MTN will deliver multimedia better, but ONLY at the times the connection is at its best. Like someone said, a better solution may be those who dedicate their resources to data only like DOPC, Swift, IpnX and Cobranet. Of these, IpnX is reputed to be the fastest, but these also depend on distance to mast, users on the network etc, but I guess they are more stable since all they do is data and perhaps Voip. Ciao |

There has never been a time in PH over the last year or so that we have had 100% perfect supply. There is usually one mini scarcity or the other, but I admit this one is looking MEGA!! Take a read at this: http://wayforwardnaija..com/2009/04/lasg-vs-tanker-drivers.html |
