, not to mention that people with no qualifications wereadmitted once they can just pay money. I recall that it was N25,000 or so in the 90's. It was all over the news. Also, OSU was reputed at some point to have the worst student/lecturer ratio of all universities in Nigeria. In 1998, economics in 100 level had about 500+ students, yet, the largest hall for lectures in SMS couldn't contain more than 100 students, |
stormm:All of the above, when I was there we were sharing Abusi Edumare school with Secondary school students as a campus. Does that make sense? Not been there since 2006, but even the permanent site was not much to write home about. And the quality of lecturers, particularly in social sciences was particularly bad. |
Abayomin70:Abayomin, I graduated from OSU over 10 years ago and I'm an indigine of Ogun state, so I do know what I'm talking about. OSU was a pretty difficult and crappy school then and apparently it still is judging by the quality of your writing. Strikes have been with us for over 20 years now, so the issues go beyond this current set of Governors. Of course OGD can do much more for OSU, but the education sector need a COMPLETE overhaul and both sides (govt and ASUU) need to conceede some ground. ASUU is becoming part of the problem instead of part of the solution. |
Dede1:Dede, go easy on the guy. I think he has been taken a little out of context and regardless, it's certainly no reason to engage in such insults. It's sometimes a little difficult to get one's thoughts to flow perfectly on paper. I think what he's trying to say is basically the lack of support for one another in Igbo land. For eg I've been in east now for 4 years and I haven't seen many places where residents have resident associations among the ibo dominated areas. However in the west, most areas have resident associations, where policies are put in place for common protection and convenience of residents. Incidentally, the estate where I stay here is populated mostly by yoruba's and we have a resident association. There is just this thing about communal living which the SE people (for whatever reasons) don't seem to have or have abandoned. Unfortunately, that system helps. |
My Thoughts: I agree that SE is not necessarily the poorest zone, but an issue it has is that everything is too informal. Everything is too informal because of the lack of emphasis on education in years gone past. Rather than go to school, every young boy was with someone else in Aba learning trade. Now this same mass of uneducated is coming back to haunt the SE. Because nothing is formal, there is nothing to tax and therefore no IGR. Also the lack of a critical mass of well educated people meant that the successive governors have been more of traders than intelectuals (orji uzor kalu is a good example), so they have not been able to articulate any useful policies to further develop the SE. See what educated and sophisticated governors can come up with in Lagos, Cross River and to some extent Rivers. Afterall, does it take a genius for Anambra and Delta state to come together and build a new bridge across river Niger?? Just issue a N50bln bond, build another bridge further down with associated roads and toll the bridge. Simple!! But if there is nothing upstairs, !! Look at the mess of Aba. It is filthy, unorganised, hectic etc. How on earth can a spare parts market be 3 feet away from an expressway!!!If it were cleaned up and organised, it could have developed so much more that it would have been booming, but because of a trader governor who grew up in the midst of such chaos, and is not intelectually sound enough to come up with a vision for Aba, nothing has been done. I personally will NEVER leave PH to go buy anything in Aba - and that is money lost!! On the other hand, see what Fasola did with Oshodi!!!! I think education is the key. But it will take along time to restore the SE and the psyche of the people need to be re-orientated and that will take another generation maybe, but if the SE can find intelectuals to lead it and provide vision, the time required to regenerate the SE can be significantly shortened. |
Not that I'm such a huge fan of OGD, but is he such the villian we are making him out to be!!? Naija is such a funny place that he may have so many enemies simply because he's trying to do the right thing and those who want the status quo to remain are just creating unending bad press for him. I've learnt not to believe anything i read in the papers without logically thinking it through for myself. We had a similar issue with the "renessaince professionals" lambasting CBN governor everyday in the papers. It got so bad that people began to complain about sanusi and insult him in many forums (nairaland included), yet she took a plea bargain of guilty and gave up N190bln. Now Sanusi seems justified. Would an innocent woman with resources to spare for an unending law suit plead guilty if she wasn't and taint her name forever!!? I've learn't that in most cases we don't have enough facts to dispassionately judge issues in this country |
Funny enough, I came to this section to post a similar thing. Like u said there are lots of companies that offer these services, but you never know who is a fraud and who isn't, though the fraudsters could equally come here and post lots of good stories to con people into believing that they offer genuine services, but at least it's a start. |
Nope, no improvement noticed!! |
abbyode:I agree totally! If you go to an average Mc Donalds or Burger King abroad, the staff are so welcoming and eager to attend to you with all smiles, but if it's here in Nigeria in a Mr Biggs or TFC, they behave as if the customer is a bother and that they'd rather not have the customer standing in front of them, although that said, Nigerian customers are also difficult, never making up their minds what they want to order before they start talking. Everywhere else you go in this country customer service is so poor!! |
Mobitel must be nuts!!! How on earth is 1Mbps 4G!!! Many networks offer almost 2Mbps on their 3G network. This same stupidity is what will drive the company under again. Instead of cutting coat according to size, Nigerian companies will promise what they don't have, without realising that it is a sure way to downfall. |
goggs: flyuche:Quite right. All said and done, MTN seems to provide the best service. I'v tried Glo and MTN in lots of locations (PH, Ibadan, Festac, Marlyand, Lekki, Anthony) and all things considered, MTN offers the best speeds and best reliability. Glo is fast sometimes, but is too inconsistent and unreliable. The only place i ever got blazing fast performance from Glo over a reasonable period of time was in Lekki over a 3 day period. MTN indeed appears to be the technically superior company, while Glo is more mouth and less action. |
Looks really nifty, but we don't yet have widespread internet connections that are fast or relaible enough to make use of it for now. Maybe if the fibre optic cables really begin to make an impact then, google tv can happen. I recall Glo used to advertise TV on demand as a feature the Glo1 cable would bring, but, |
I figure MTN is just trying a cheeky way to respond to the tarrif reduction by Etisalat and Glo. I'm sure that in a few months, that might become their default tarrif across board, you know MTN usually doens't do anything until it has been pushed to the wall, which is what Etisalat did with their 25k/sec. Zain on the other hand is lost in the wilderness!! Tarrif, no way, internet, no way. Zain is looking like the first casualty to go down in the telecoms wars, which would be a shame, considering that Etisalat that just started is forging ahead. |
honeric01:Maybe it has to do with where you stay. I stay in PH and I have not been able to browse on MTN for over a week now. Same as you, it connects but doesn't browse. And it shouldn't be a setting or sim issue cos i've used this sim to browse on my phone and laptop before with no issues. I have been able to reach their customer care via email, but they don't have a clue of what might be going on. |
Bonchux:Etisalat's internet is still way too slow for PC use. Guess it's ok for phone browsing though. Brownteeth:You are very correct though, in the past i've also complained about this. I once subscribed to the N500 daily plan, then it was 50Mb and you won't believe , but it got finished in about 19minutes!!!!!!! And all I did was open yahoo, soccernet and fb! On the other hand I also use Glo on the same laptop and their 150Mb barely gets to 100Mb before the 24 hours is up, so what's going on? ON THE SAME LAPTOP, WITH OBVIOUSLY THE SAME SETTINGS!! MTN is a fraud!! ![]() |
crowned:Not to sound like a pessimist, but I doubt it! At least for now!! If you want any significant impact we might have to wait a year or so before everything settles into place and it actually begins to impact our daily browsing. |
Djcn:Quite right! MTN, Zain and Glo seem to be down in PH at the moment. I haven't been able to connect to MTN at all for over a week now. Glo has also been problematic for about a week. It connects, but moves between HSDPA, EDGE, GPRS and disconnects every minute or two. I figure a fibre optic backbone that deleivers data to the South East/South South may have been cut somewhere, probably by some construction going on. Funny enough the guys at customer service never seem to have aclue of the technical issues going on iro their network around the country. |

@Orangeman, the law does not give you what you don't ask for?? The Ibru family started Oceanic bank. That Cecillia is guilty of fraud doesn't mean the whole bank should be taken away from them. If the value of her fraud is N195bln, then that it what the law will recover from her!! If the balance of her wealth still entitles her to own 10% of Oceanic bank, then so be it, in the eyes of the law!!! |
I don't know why everything takes forever in Nigeria. Heard on CNBCA a few days ago that a study had been done on thermal mapping of South Africa and based on that, the area with the highest solar radiation (Northern Cape region) would get a 5000Mw solar park which should be up and running by 2012/2013!!! Yet, here in Nigeria we have been building gas plants for almost 6 years, with no end in sight. If a solar park can deliver 5000Mw in a relatively short time, why are we struggling with so many 350Mw sized gas plants, with all the sunlight we have in the North?? |
I'm inclined to agree with the first poster. Take alook at some of our workers (i'll pick the bankers); many of them go around marketing stuff they have no clue about (especially the ladies- sorry). Even if the bank hasn't trained you enough, many of these marketers studied related fields (accounting, bus admin, economics etc) and yet cannot take the time to educate themselves on the new banking products etc, but they will have time to go outside and look at clothes that a friend is selling in the boot of her car Also look at our graduates! I've seen an accounting graduate who couldn't seperate accounting transactions into debit and credit to create a trial balance!! The problem is that our society has become so corrupt and lacking in values that being smart and skilled has little or nothing to do with how successful you can become, so no one sees the need to invest in being smart/skilled. We have the dumbest people in our national assembly, many girls sustain themselves in banking by sleeping with men to get access to deposits (I used to be a banker so i know these things), or sleep with top management to stay relevant within the bank, students bribe lecturers to pass exams and so on, |
Well, one man's meat is another man's poison, I guess the bottom line is that these internet services differ considerably depending on where you are, distance to base station, quality of laptop or phone modem and the quality of the 3G network where you are. It's understandable that both networks would pay more attention to Lagos, since its such huge market. Lekki and Jakande estate may have had an upgrade done, while Festac/Ph area might not have, finito!! |
Maybe tobyk lives in Lekki. I stayed in Lekki for a few days recently and that's the only place I've seen Glo performing very fast. It was averaging 1.2mbps, but in Festac, PH and Ibadan (the other places i've tried using Glo) it was crap |
Glo is just a big disappointment, all hype and no action on this their Glo1 cable. They have dug up the whole PH with nothing to show for it. Even their Glo modem is so inconsistent and unreliable!!! |
This is to everyone out there!! Please beware of the new MTN bundles. They are promoted as a benefit to the consumer. However, I subscribed to the FUNLINK bundle, which is gives 50minutes of "on net" calls, 200 "on net" sms and 60Mb browsing. To my surprise, my first on net call was 1minute 28 seconds, but the balance told me that I had 48 on net minutes left!!!! I.e they have deviced a smart way of returning people to per minute billing!! My advice to everyone, just dump MTN and go for Glo or Etialat whose rates are clearly stated at 25k/sec or N15/min, cos with MTN, by the time you have made 25 calls of 1min 10 secs, your 50 on net minutes are gone, when all the time you've really spent on the phone is actually 29mins 10 secs. BEWARE!!! |
Ah, !!! Tyhe beauty of competition! First the data allowable goes up and when that doesn't add many more customers, then the prices will come down. Though MTN will always be the last to bring down prices cos they know they have the best speeds and reliability and they know the competion (glo) isn't really offering anything to worry about for now. |
100kbs na speed!!!!? |
