TravelRe: Reasons I No Longer Have Interest To Relocate To America by COMPAQ(m): 9:16pm On Apr 06, 2023
Tadadobe:
With the recent news that dollars is going to be deemphasized and might probably lose values, I'm beginning to think twice about my relocation move. My uncle that recently came back from the US gave me $5000 to do business and I initially thought about using this money to move abroad.

I'm not like an average Nigerian who get carried away with "there are good road and 99hr power supply abroad". When I travel, I'm going there to go and make money not to count ceiling and take hot picture for the Instagram and to pepper people at home.

If dollars get decentralized and $1 = about #250, thouh this development will not go well with people abroad since they'll have fear that the little they send home will no longer be able to surprise anyone, and their usual conversion strategy will no longer work. But on the other hand, this move will help people in Nigeria as there won't be that much of a difference between someone earning #500,000 in Nigeria and the one earning $3000 abroad
Unfortunately Naira would probably just get worse alongside the dollar.

Mgbuoba/Ozuoba (Location) Flyover newly constructed by Governor Wike will be commissioned tomorrow by Kayode Fayemi in Rivers State

Wike also hinted that the last and 12th Flyover of his administration will be commissioned by President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu this month
There is more to governance and road infrastructure than flyovers, but no doubt these 12 flyovers should significantly improve the traffic situation in PH. And now that they have been done it will never be required again by another government.

But for me Woke will not have done well if he doesn't resolve the traffic situation at Obigbo junction along PH Aba expressway with a flyover. As well as upgrading the roads in Obigbo. That areas has suffered under past governments.

If Air Peace can fly from Lagos to Abuja in 50mins why can't we get military jets from the closest Air Force base to rain missiles on the millitants?

Better still, we should have armed drones partoling the air round Maiduguri and Kaduna on a daily basis round the clock. The Turkish drone can stay airborne for more than 24hrs t a stretch, costs just $5mln or so and is cheap to operate.

I disagree! Some of the countries that made the swiftest advancements did so under a millitary government or pseudo dictatorship. Examples are:

China
Malaysia
Singapore
Rwanda

For a people as undisciplined, corrupt, religiously and ethically divided as Nigerians, a good dictatorship that can lick us into shape is not a bad idea and for me might be better than this rudderless democracy we are operating!!

N300bn Yakubu Used For 'Selection' Should Have Been Used For Infrastructure - Falz

Nigerian rapper, Falz has again slammed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Mahmood Yakubu, over the conduct of the 2023 election, IGBERETV reports.

Taking to his Twitter handle, Falz claimed that Yakubu used the N300 billion budgeted for the election to carry out a “selection” process. He said that the money could have been used for infrastructure.

He wrote;

https://twitter.com/falzthebahdguy/status/1641037872114401280?t=wuhsGDl0Wi9Iv3dpRVSBlg&s=19[/quote]I guess because growing up, we all saw BILLION as massive, unquenchable money!!

However, falz should bear in mind that N300bln is not even up to $500mln (at parallel market rate). What game changing infrastructure can $500mln build!? Even some premier league stadiums cost more than that!!

Newyorkitis:
As an Urban Planner, this is a welcome development.
As an urban planner, are setbacks meant to be for trading activities? Cos what i get from this initiative from LASG is that its mainly to organize and TAX economic activity on setbacks!!

Not sure that trading activities is the essence of the space we leave between roads and building!!

Having said that, I googled the definition and rationale for setbacks, and this came up!

A setback is used to create a buffer area which protects buildings or structures from the road by mitigating noise levels, by providing a safety zone and by improving aesthetics through landscaping or screening. Setbacks are a function of the area type, land use and the functional classification of the road.

BusinessRe: How Are You Preparing For Subsidy Removal? by COMPAQ(m):
While I support subsidy removal, I am disappointed by the approach!!

By now, I would expect Govt, Labour and the organized private sector to have formed a powerful committee to determine the best way to mitigate shocks to the economy. The impact of the subsidy removal will be material, but with proper planning, at least the government can help the citizens. If I were in charge, amongst the things I would do prior to subsidy removal would be as follows:

1. Revise the minimum wage for the lowest cadre of workers in the public service. Someone earning minimum wage of N30k should move to say N80k. But it doesn't mean those earning N500k need to be topped up.

2. Get the private sector to also top up everyone's salary by a fuel supplement of say N20k per month.

3. Order like 5000 buses for intracity transport that are fueled by CNG for the largest cities in Nigeria - Lagos, PH, Abuja, Onitsha, Kano, Kaduna, Ibadan, Owerri etc to help reduce transport costs.

4. Encourage private sector bus drivers to also convert their vehicles to CNG in the larger cities impact the larger parts of the population

5. Aggressively improve electricity supply by proper regulation and monitoring of the DISCO's. Thankfully the recent constitution amendment gives States the capacity to get involved in electricity matters.

6. Encourage digital means of doing business in the public and private sector to discourage the need for a lot of driving around. If I can conduct most of my business online, why do I need to be driving around so much.

7. Resolve issues, bottlenecks that cause people to spend a lot of time in traffic in our major cities. We cant be spending 4 hour a day in traffic in lagos per day at N750 per litre o.

8. Provide tax incentives for full payment of solar installations for homes and businesses

9. Create a fund to help people migrate to solar at low interest rates (or even zero interest rates in first 5 years). Those who access this fund do not get the tax incentives.

10. Make importation of new and/or used electric, plug in hybrid and normal hybrid vehicles free of duty and levy.

Seems you also think a bit too highly of yourself.

No doubt production doesn't have to be for local consumption, but if you then plan to export, then it brings me back to my original point that we have to conform to the standards of those we are exporting to! A point you tried to put down by saying we have a large population! So what exactly are you saying Mr Economics Professor!

As for your logic that a Samsung could potentially produce in Nigeria and export it all even if we were not buying anything. Absolutely, that might be correct, but we all know Nigeria has poor factors of production. Nigeria is nowhere near ready in any ramification (electricity, skilled labour, economic & fiscal policy, transportation, ports, iron ore, aluminium etc) to be a producer for the world, especially in highly competitive products like FMCG.

Next!?
And let me add that the rich getting richer adds little to no value to the productive base of the economy. Afterall how many cars, houses, appliances etc will they buy?

The economy is better served with 100mln people in Nigeria being worth N10mln each, than 10mln Nigerians being worth N100bln each, cos the 100mln individuals will buy far more.

People do not have economic power by magic.. Wealth does not come before economies grow. It can happen ssimultaneously
Consumption can be powered by credit just like production
More and more people falling into poverty does not mean companies will go down. More and more people getting poor can happen at exactly the same time as more people getting rich
Ever heard of rich getting richer and poor getting poorer.
That is not basic economics. It is nonsense

There are so many different companies not all produce for the poor
I
Samsung can produce 50000 acs in Nigeria even if Nigerians buy none as long as they can sell them somewhere else.
Production does not have to be for local consumption

We are main stream we have the numbers
we don't need to sell kilishi in London and we don't need stupid cookies in Nigeria..
What we need to do is make more what we consume for ourselves more efficiently
Well, unfortunately the world is now a global economy. We have population but insufficient wealth the boost our own economy. With more and more people falling into poverty ,more and more companies will go down. It's basic economics. Economies grow when it's citizens have the economic power to drive domestic production and consumption. How will Samsung have a factory to produce 50,000 split unit Ac per annum in Lagos if Nigeria will only consume 5000. Meanwhile in this day and age factories only survive by large economies of scale. It's the absence of that scale that's killing our factories.

They should divert those monies to marketing. They should recruit boys and girls on the street and use them to do aggressive marketing. Can't they learn from the way waw they do street marketing.
Never heard of those products you mentioned. Companies making super cheap crap for poor Nigerians also lace these products with unregulated chemicals that can kill you slowly.

Same thing with biscuits you see in Nigeria. All flat and tasting like cardboard with loads of sugar just to make it sweet. And mostly made in places like Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Surinam etc When last did you see a rich, British made cookie in the shops. Even Nigerian made is a struggle.
