BusinessRe: Prices Of Cattle Crash In Taraba Due To Naira Scarcity by COMPAQ(m): 12:34pm On Feb 02, 2023
thebosstrevor1:
It is expected.

Naira redesign will adversely affect transactions in the agriculture sector because this sector is heavily dependent on cash. Due to the scarcity of the new banknotes, many farmers will have insufficient cash to purchase seeds, fertilizers and pesticides needed for the plantation of crops. The shortage of cash might lead to plunging in demand which in turn led to a crash in the prices of crops and animals . Farmers will be unable to recover even the costs of transportation from their farms to the market from the low prices offered.
Going by this analysis, then it is only expected to be a short term thing. Cos eventually in a few months, the cash situation should normalize then things go back to the way they were.

Quite right. What surprises me though is the lack of investment by Lafarge, despite the growth in demand in Nigeria over the last 10years and with opportunity for export.

I guess because they are a multinational company with many global operations, they may not take Nigeria serious also because of our reputation for corruption and lack of ease of doing business relative to other companies. This is a case for having our own home grown industries that can invest at home, even if they also go abroad.

Nigeria should be supplying the entire West Africa with cement.

PropertiesEstate Layouts In Nigeria by COMPAQ(op): 2:48pm On Feb 01, 2023
Can someone help me with exactly why residential areas in Nigeria are always so haphazard. Houses are never in a straight line. Roads are never in a straight line. There's never greenery, there are no trees etc.

The picture shows a middle class residential community in the US and very few, if any, middle class area in Nigeria matches this. Not yaba, or gbagada or Anthony. Not even Lekki phase1 in my view.

No doubt, our uses of fences gets in the way, but even asides that the straight lines and the symmetry of the estate in the picture is just makes for a good environment.

PhonesRe: Starlink Will Shake Up The Internet Market! What do you think? by COMPAQ(m): 2:02pm On Feb 01, 2023
Ournolly:
Equiano will be very limited.
Mainly available to coastal areas like Lagos and PH.
This has always been the biggest issue with most fiber optic services.

It's very expansive to expand their services and when done to non-coastal regions there tend to be a lot of service maintenance and issues that have to do with the underground wiring.

Satellite services like StarLink on the other hand is a game changer, and the fact that SpaceX is a space exploration company is a double boost.

Elon is dominating isp across the globe, no doubt.
Can't wait to watch the likes of mtn and glo scammers sweat profusely. grin
Not sure its much of a gamechanger! Cos its too expensive. From what I gather, the NGN prices posted on the site are just for representation. Once you try to pay, I hear it will request for the USD equivalent. So In effect, the monthly subscription is almost N40k, as you will have to source your dollar at the black market, while the hardware costs is almost N450k. Those are not prices that are game changer prices. Besides if what you have meets your need, why do you necessarily need it. I have 10Mbps Fiber Optic and I can watch FHD with it for N11.5k. If I wanted 20Mbps, it would be N18k or so. So if that works, why do i need to cough out half a million naira of my hard earned money.

And our gsm isnt that bad. i've watched matches on my phone at 1080p for the full 90mins several time without major issues. just the occasional drop in resolution now and again.

This is nice.

My quote in the linked thread refers:

If they're pricing in naira at official rates then although the setup fee is more expensive than contemporary fiber offerings (ipnx, fiberone, et al.), the value is in reliability and cheaper internet.

The speedtest screenshot above suggests >200mbps for ~₦19k which the competitors do not offer.
Fiberone and Ipnx both max out at 152Mbps and 150Mbps for ₦66,750 and ₦62,350 respectively.

It is worthy to note that Ipnx offers Gigabit internet (1000mbps) under its FOS Xtreme plans (FOS extreme 1000) but that would set you back ₦268,750 monthly, which is basically the one-time cost of the Starlink hardware.

If Starlink can prove its mettle by offering consistently fast internet (per Elon Musk, planned speed is 10gbps) at these relatively low prices, and resilience in bad weather conditions then it is poised to take over the market.

A death knell for traditional fiber offerings would be if Starlink offered a way to pay for the hardware costs in installments from your monthly subscription fee.
Good idea actually. They could make the initial fee N100k, spread the balance over 1 year to make it say N30k, then after one year, it reverts to the normal N19k. That would help more people get on board.

As usual, we are not serious in this country.

This thing is pretty easy to stamp out. Just get plain clothes DSS and police to show up at the popular event centers in the biggest cities of Nigeria and arrest all the hawkers peddling new notes there and interrogate them to find the source and then go to the banks and arrest their suppliers, who I suspect will typically be the Head of Operation and/or Branch Manager as these are the ones with the vault key.

Bu the time this goes on aggressively for like 3-6 months, the sale of new notes at these places will fizzle away.

Another step will be to have plain clothes officers in the halls as well, to stop this practice of spraying money.

Looking like these trains were poorly manufactured.
It's because Nigerians go and tamper with the tracks looking for iron to melt. The Nigerian people are the problem. There is nothing we don't steal or vandalise. Bridge railings, sign posts, street name signs, rail tracks. The government is really the reflection of the people.

We always point out the speck in our leaders eyes, but ignore the log in ours. If not, ritual killing, kidnapping, hook up won't have taken the dimension it has today, despite the poverty in the land.

Same with students in university hostel. The way we vandalise the place is unimaginable, yet we want our universities to be like Cambridge.

While I support the move to help checkmate politicians ahead of the elections, their own failure in getting the new notes out widely enough means their Jan 31 deadline is not very tenable. Overhead bridges are few along that stretch, especially from Orile to Badagry, it's going to be difficult for people to cross the express once the trains becomes operational.

From mile2 to Abule-Ado for instance has just three overhead bridges, that's one at mile2 , Festac and the other at Abule-Ado.
Well that's the price of development. We can't continue to be backward.

I Dubai once I was going to a mall on the opposite side of Sheik Zayed expressway to where I was staying. I had to walk 1km away to the nearest metro, cross and walk like 1k back again to end up like 100m on the opposite side of my hotel.

And same thing to go back. Luckily what I bought wasn't heavy and it was evening so weather was cool

It's only in Nigeria people are trading beside expressways and crossing it anyhow.

Guy, salary pass salary! We have about 30banks in Nigeria and each one will have like 7 Executive Directors. The still earn salary from N50-N200mln per annum, depending on the bank. Not to talk of GM's, AGM's.

The big 4 audit firms EY, Deloitte, KPMG and PwC each have like 10 Partners who earn from N50mln to N120mln per annum (inclusive of bonus)

A senior person in the International Oil Companies will earn like N70mln -N150mln per annum and they will have like 500 people in this category across Shell, Mobil, Chevron, Agip, Total and Seplat.

People who work on the Island and are really desirous of living close to the office may choose to pay it for their comfort, even its a struggle to raise N350mln for a house in Ikoyi.

If you strip away all the mutual verbal abuse, what he is trying to communicate to you is that a subway system does not always make sense. Not all cities have them in what you term the "advanced world". Lagos is a low-lying coastal city with most of its coastline being at or below sea level. Digging underground tunnels that wouldn't flood and kill everyone in them would not be impossible, but would be incredibly complex and prohibitively expensive. Most other cities with such topography opt for an above ground metro system. It is simply more sensible.

Secondly, we are all well aware that we are not an "advanced world" country. We cannot afford to build "advanced world" systems for the most part. According to travelstatsman.com, it would cost around $325 billion to build the equivalent of the London Underground today. If it were to be built in Lagos, it would cost at least twice that because we would have to import virtually all the materials and much of the expertise. Please, where would the whole of Nigeria, much less Lagos, find that kind of money? The Lagos metro is fit for purpose, and built within the limitations of topography and budget. Let us celebrate it and pray for more.
Extremely well said!!

Have you seen Bullet train? What the person is trying to tell you is that we are left behind all those train is outdated comparing to what the advanced world is using currently, we have money to build modern facilities don’t allow our leaders deceive you into thinking we can’t afford it
Stop hanging on to the Nigeria of 1970. Nigeria of today cannot afford bullet trains. Not every country in Europe has bullet train. America has no bullet train, UK has no proper bullet train (high speed, yes, bullet no). I have taken train from London to Manchester and London to Bournemouth and also Lagos to Ibadan. While I would say the UK one was a bit more modern than the Lagos Ibadan train, but not by a whole lot. However, ours was equally as comfortable, but much slower.

Even if corruption in Nigeria were to be zero, Nigeria is still a relatively poor country by per capita standards. Yes, we would get a lot more done, but not to the extent of bullet trains. Its easy to compare Nigeria to Kuwait, UAE, Saudi etc but look at the population difference alone!! Nigeria is 220mln, UAE is 10mln while Kuwait is 3mln. That means Nigeria is 22times more populous than UAE. And both of them produce more oil than we do.

That is like comparing a man with salary of 500k a month with 3 kids and another man with same N500k a month with 66kids!!!

This false sense of "we are a rich country" is what continues to keep Nigeria poor as we continue to subsidize petrol. What Nigeria could do in terms of subsidy in 1980 with population of 70mln and maybe 5mln cars on the roads cannot be the same in 2023 with 220mln people and maybe 30mln cars on the roads!!

We have to face up to our current reality and adjust our ways of managing this economy!!

That's what you think. Then why are people paying N4mln for 4 bedroom duplex in Agungi,Chevron axis of Lagos? Why are people paying N8mln for phase 1 duplex and why are people paying N12mln rent on Ikoyi and Banana island? For those amounts, why don't they all have their own houses? The fact that the largest rice mill in Africa was commissioned doesn't mean that rice will suddenly get cheap. It might just mean that rice doesn't get more expensive than it already is. Now we are at 8 billion. 10 years ago the population of Nigeria was 169 million. Now we are 220 million.
