Listening to our President and other presidential candidates, senators, governors and everyone aspiring for one political, I can not help but wonder what are their campaign mandates? Do they have principles or ideologies which they hope to implement if elected? Or they just campaign based on party name? PDP and all her candidates lack original ideas, their current political office holders take the masses for a ride. You pay for everything in present administration. The saddest exploitation by politicians without impunity is the 1500 Naira that NIS collected in the name of employment and a recent charge of 4000 Naira to be paid by prospective NYSC members. Similarly, APC has no road map or ideas either. All they do is blame PDP and PDP administration even when PDP try to do good. Why can't APC as a major opposition offer a more attractive ideas on how they intend to run government if voted in? Or, are they proving what many have suspected that PDP and APC are different side of same coin? We need a party or administration that would solve the unemployment problem. How would you solve it? Not all this setting up of committee. Does APC has an alternative to create employment? Security is the most ridiculous. Security is a problem that affects every one, whether PDP or APC. It affect the masses mostly. True, PDP is not proactive in solving the security challenges, but what alternative does APC has aside blame. Everyday we read of blames, blames and counter blames by APC n PDP goons. This does not solve anything. Can APC advice the government of the day on how to solve this monster? If it works, they take the glory and we will all vote for them. Will we they masses listen to ideas or we follow blindly with blind sentiments? Or just collect the crumbs in forms of cash, rice and kerosine then damn the consequences? |
barcanista: Mr. Soyinka thank you for your opinion.Guy, are you OK? (a) Someone toppled democracy, and till now he has not apologize to the country. Now he wants to lead in democracy? I don't have problem with Buhari, but if we must get it right, we must respect our institutions and rules. (b) So U approve of a country without human right? What were the corruption charges against Tai Solarin? Was he tried in a law court headed by competent judge? In a civilized country, convicted criminals are not denied access to their medications. So, being suspected of a crime qualifies you for death by a cruel means? (c) How corrupt was Ekwueme? What were the charges against him? So, finding some $$ in his house automatically convicted him of corruption? I can imagine the nature of juggle justice you want Buhari or any politician to serve Nigerians with. Also, someone being poor makes him innocent and being rich makes one a criminal? In what universe do you live in? Buhari should mentor a good candidate and forget it. He may have been a good and discipline soldier, but that doesn't qualify him for the presidency. I want to vote for Buhari's trainee!! |
This is really sad!! But more sad is the fact most Nigerians will queue to and fight to pay this money. Our complacency aka 'suffering and smiling' is why our civil servants and politicians continue to take us as fools. I am mad about this!! Can someone give the phone number or email to anyone at the NYSC headquarters? I have been to their yeye website, such info is not available. Does the DG has any facebook page? Let me try something, even when I did my NYSC 12yrs ago. We need to fight to save this country from these Shylocks. |
Nigerians with their cynicism and pessimism!! Even if Innoson is assembling exact cars as found in China, he is employing Nigerians and not just importing like most other millionaires are doing. We are shouting gov't should provide jobs for everyone when we don't want to support anything Nigerian. Not even moral support!! 60% of components of the gadgets we buy from the western world is made in China, India, Indonesia etc, yet we rejoice because we buy 'made in USA' goods. Almost 85% of the textiles in USA, UK, Canada is made for them in China, but sometimes carry the US, UK, Canadian company label. Their citizens know it, yet patronize them 100% because they put money back in their country. We don't buy anything made in Nigeria except a foreign company based in Nigeria and having foreign staff. How will we grow? Where will the jobs come from? Must everything be tribalized or politicized? |
I recall my NYSC days in Adamawa state 12yrs ago. At the camp, we were always threaten of being sent to "Koma" if you misbehaved. We were so curious such that when NCCF arranged to go for "Rural Rugged Evangelism" we all settled for Koma. The people are nice and hospitable. We still indigenes who speak Hausa and English Languages. These ones serve as interpreters. They need government presence not to be used as objects for exploits as some people are doing presently. |
I watch this drama unfold with pity for our gullible country men. This 'negotiator' believes he is dealing with his countrymen or any westerner where 80% of their yes means YES. In the western world most at times, you are taken by your words. But only less that 20% of Nigerians are worth being taken by their words. While will he believe wholeheartedly the words of bokoharam members without asking for proves? It reminds me of typical scenarios in secondary school those days: A class prefect is asked to write down the name of noise makers. I made all the noise in the class and class prefect wrote down my name. I tried my best to destroy the paper where my name was written. In the ensuing commotion, the school senior prefect came in and saw me standing. I was asked to kneel down and mention those I was making noise with. Who do you think I mentioned? The number one person, The class prefect. I then followed by all the students that used to bully me in the class. We were all lined up and punished. I know this was (or is still) common is school where corporal punishments are allowed. Think this maybe what these guys are doing. Our security guys should look more for evidence rather making it a political blame game. I may not be quick to castigate the former COAS or Modu without hard evidence. |
9jalyte: My friend, I am ashamed of how you are locked up in the bottle of infantile. Someone was pointing at great achievements of some clergy to human development, all you can bring up is an outdated debate that has no significance. The protestants used those debates to justify their separation into a more "God-centered" religious order, ok, over the years what have they done better than the Catholics. And if I may ask, what is your business with what they believe. I hate it how Nigerians are so marooned by religion that they can not think of anything creative. Infact, my Chinese friend says it is lack of creativity that drives us to always fall on our knees asking God for our daily bread. Those priests mentioned have achieved greatness for mankind, ok, you who understands God better based on your wisdom, what is your own contribution.10000 likes! No mind us with our religiosity without substance. We have the highest number of denominations, yet, we are poorest in compassion and 90% of us cheat in one form or the other. Empty barrels make the loudest noise. |
PURITYMYPRIDE: my dear nairalanders, dealing with these local agents are the greatest risk you can take.more than 90% of them are criminals. I advice if you don't have a God fearing hand in this business, please don't go for it.I made money in this business when I was in the north.it is very risky to allow a total stranger to handle your business.I did it by myself when I was there.God bless you allHmmm, you get am for wahala, geskia!! Is like you are angry others maybe coming to gain in the market too. Why are we this selfish? |
Please guys, how much can a Lecturer 2 and lecturer 1 take home as net monthly pay? A friend just finished a PhD in UK and wants to relocate back to Nigeria. Your sincere is appreciated in advance. |
Why do Nigerians like creating unnecessary barriers for themselves and others? A friend did Engineering in his BSc, went to abroad and did MSc n PhD in Chemistry. Today he is an associate prof in PHYSICS dept in the country he ddid his PhD. Why cant someone with a BSc in chem master in public health n teach same? Who makes this policies if such exist at all? |
Kanwulia: Neither!Lol @frenermies!!! They are the ones that feel entitled most so that they can have a subject for gossip. IMO, d couple has a right to do how it pleases them. The people that first put this ceremony into the Christian domain, said "For the happiness of the couple................" |
@coogar, U know how Nigerians are quick to be friends and people from same state in another city claim brotherhood even when they are all jealous of your success and progress. These are the ones I am talking about. For me, even in the community you were raised, I feel it should be private. Note the word "feel". The type of community you refered to in your earlier post is hard to find in today's Nigeria. Gone are those days when it took a community to raise a child. coogar: nah, they aren't entitled. |
I like you candid answer, it captures almost everything I was thinking. But, what happen in a situation where the couple are just residents of this area, unto work but were not raised there? Is that community still entitled? coogar: it should be a private event but this ceremony was imposed on us africans by the imperialists thus changing the dynamism of the whole works. africans generally thrive on the communal spirit. a child is literally fathered & mothered by the entire community. so when that child grows up, succeeds in life & decides to get married, the whole community feels entitled to attend the wedding of the child they helped raise. |
Since the onset of the 21st century (2000s), wedding aka white wedding has been upgraded to very high standard. So many expectations, comparisons etc. Some people even quarrel if they are not invited or given a role to play. I was of the opinion that the couple has the final say on what kind of wedding they want, but I listened to 2 friends argue today. The summary I got is that wedding is a public event for friends, family and the community the couple live. Is wedding in our country a public event or private event? Has it been like this with the people that brought this ceremony to us? |
simeonabio: Hello mr teacher, if it because of money you are leaving the profession then you are missing the point. There is money in teaching, only that you don't see it. I am a teacher also. Why not start a private coaching centre and recruit teachers, and people will pay u. Write books on the area of your specialization (i do that also)Simeon, I like your concept and your website. How do you make money? Through advert alone? |
Guy, follow your mind. Most ladies like outward things. They want to a topic of discussion by friends. Your family is a private affair, so if you wish everything to be 'lowest key', you have all the rights. BTW, when did a public display of wealth for a naming ceremony our culture? |
OP, thou art WICKED!! If this ever happened in Nigeria, 75% of marriages in Nigeria will end in divorce court. Nigerians have been trained to be opportunists!! |
Some ladies make me scared of getting married. Exactly what my sister-in-law is doing to my brother. None of my siblings can spend a night in my elder brother's home again. My mom cried the last time she visit my brother who just left the hospital. @OP, I will tell you the same thing I tell my bros. U didn't let that woman understand the bond between U and your parents or how important your parents are to U. Yours is understandable since the marriage was via pregnancy. In my brother's case, they dated. My SIL is evil. Thank God that I can cater for my parents and siblings. |
anienge001: Sad enough, they learned it from school. Are we not required by some teachers to reproduce their notes verbatim? If you put your own reasoning, you fail. Out of school, our parents and elders compare us to X, Y, Z. Why can't you be like so, so and so? To crown it all, there is nothing like intellectual property laws in Nigeria. No useful patent laws. You can see Nigeria is a fertile ground for plagiarism A.K.A 'dobing'(s.p?) and copycatting.Well stated!! 1000 Likes!! |
Too many green horns on this thread. Nigerian youths, please get real and stop this useless debate. Some can not even present points in a comprehensible manner, yet claiming superiority based on which school they attend(or attended). Please get real and add value to your lives and not PRIDE. |
phuck_NL: Rather unnecessary topic if i may add. This is not news and there is nothing to be ashamed of. To produce the toothpick and matches that you are referring to requires "optimization, control, mechanization, and proper distribution channels" The most important factor is industrialisation. Anyone can make toothpicks and matches in Nigeria but NOT EVERYONE can make them in BULK Quantities at a good enough profit margin. The answer is simple. NEPA. You require industrial control systems and machines to produce this "so called trivial" materials in BULK. Where is the power for the required factories going to come from? Most of them have to rely on Diesel generators. The answer is simple. It costs more to make in Nigeria so any sane business would rather import. So there is nothing to be ashamed of. We simply do not have the enabling environment. While I may agree with your analysis of bulk production and profit margin, the topic is not 'unnecessary'. What would you rather want to discuss? The points you brought are worth considering by anyone thinking of making any Nigerian product not toothpick. So topic is not only necessary, but CRUCIAL. Or are you an importer? On the NEPA or PHCN issue, it boils down to our attitude to government work and business. NEPA was suppose to operate like an enterprise, generate money to run its business including paying of staff while using the profit to offset government investment. Rather our uncles, fathers, brothers, sisters and friends turned it into their corruption den. Every year government appropriate money to NEPA, with the bulk going to pay salaries and little left to generate more power. Who are the ones working in NEPA? People we know and sometimes related to. |
Heanry :Thanks a bunch. I will start getting requirements for maritrade and give them a trial. |
Hello 'house', My question is: Is it possible for a person to buy any stock in Nigeria without appearing in person? I am presently outside but interested in investing in stocks. Any broker that can deal directly online? |
Nice thread. Following with due deligence. |
Kairoseki77: You think the flood is political? If there is a flood in Igboland, the news shouldn't cover it? Are you jokers slow? While I agree with you that reporting natural disasters like this should not be politicized, the guy(OP) that opened this thread gave a highly mis-leading headline/title. The moment I saw the headline my heart skipped because a close friend lives close to where there use to be flooding in Uyo. After the underground drainage, no more flooding. People should be less sentimental while reporting events. For for the OP to use the phrase " ... despite underground drainage" tells everyone that the guy is biased. Meanwhile the flood is in far away Ibeno and close to the ocean. The pictures of flood in New York city you showed, did the reporter said "flood in New York despite the advance drainage system and advance technology"? Most Nigerian youths today only see thing through the prism of tribal, religious or political affiliation. This will never do us any good. |
It looks like a scene in a Nollywood movie. It can't be real in a country with the best leaders. Abi is it real? |
Stop smoking indoors and leave the rest for smokers to figure out. I hope U guys are not chasing shadows. There are better and more pressing issues than smoking. |
Ouch_Daddy: Sentiments apart! This is really crazy! How &Why should Policemen shoot at students?? Even in d intense turkey protests, de (Policemen) didn't shoot at citizens..talkmore of innocent students!! The Trigger-happy Policemen should be brought to Jusice! Nairaland English & blah-blah-blah apart!! This is outrageous!!This is what happens in a country with NO defined principles. If certain services are to be free then they must be free and accessible to all, if they are to be paid for then we are well informed. But here in naija, we are made to believe that the society owe us as students. This is because many who are not even at our academic level are having it free. There is no good and reliable channel to address grievances aside protests. IMO, #200 shouldn't be much to warrant a protest if the issue is properly handled and not given to the students as a shock. They should have been informed of the changes before the beginning of the semester. UniUyo is within the city, any demonstration is easily hijacked by "area boys", so the students should have tried other means of addressing this issue. Lots of questions begging for answers!! But so sad that students lost their lives |
20K per month means 24% per annum. No bank gives that for a fixed deposit. IMO, it's good. |
