Cousin9999: I don't know what local chefs, breweries, and wine makers are doing, but tapping the nation's native fruits and herbs is an excellent way to change the beverage culture.
Whether it's fruit wines, spicy beers, teas, or juice blends using local superfood; this should be explored more. I'm sure this already happens, but it's not mass-produced and marketed to the masses in a major way, or in a way more attractive than foreign brands.
This phenomenon is usually biggest in warm, coastal places. You see it all over the world with juice bars on every corner and companies making their own blends. You see it with the wine market as well.
Very apt!
Still surprise that 95% of the wines and liquors in Nigeria is imported. Yet, we have tonnes of our fruits wasting away.
missimelda01: So I get this awkward reaction when a man asks for my position in my family and I say I'm the first child. I really want to know what the issue is...is it just the bride price??
I am married to a 1st girl, but second child. They initially appeared down to earth. But like play, like play, I trained the last 2 siblings through the University. At the moment, she is expecting me to help set up her married brothers in one business or the other. Everything always falls on my head. It comes with too many responsibilities and expectations. It is very challenging thing!
imiski: I prefer black label. Because beer gives me headache, and almost everybody takes beer. OP where do you buy this your mead I would like to try it. Whats the alcohol content.
I have asked many friends and even wine sellers in Nigeria, sadly mead in not sold in Nigeria. But there are few meaderies (where mead is made) in South Africa, and many developed countries. I buy mine from Canada and USA.
Nigerians have been noted worldwide as people who are so proud of our food culture. That is why Nigerians in diaspora still find ways to eat Nigerian food, no matter how expensive.
On the contrary, we hardly talk about drinks. It appears Nigerians don't regard Drinks as part of the food culture. Many people I have interacted with outside believe we Nigerians don't know what we drink. Yet, we have a $15 billion alcoholic beverage market. Is it true we drink whatever people around us drink without knowing personal reasons?
What do you drink and why do you drink that? If you drink beer, mention the brand and why you prefer that brand. If you drink, liquor (gin, vodka, whiskey etc) say so, and give reasons. If you drink wine, state that factors behind your choice.
I enjoy Mead. Mead is wine made from honey. I drink it because, it is the oldest of all alcoholic beverages. It doesn't give some of the hangover effect associated with wines, like headaches since mead contains no tannins. It gives all the benefits of honey, but without the high sugar!
Good development in Akwa Abasi Ibom state. I am only concerned about the source of raw materials. I wish the southern railway is completed for easy movement of raw materials and products.
GoTV: Even though I'm a born again Christian, i think Nigeria needs to emulate Saudi Arabia by limiting the rights and opinions of Christian women especially. A driving and social media ban for women in Nigeria is good to start with. Women are becoming more bold and their actions if not curtailed with strict rules will keep bringing down men of repute. Biodun is the victim today and I'm ashamed of how we Christians are dragging his innocent name in the mud.
We Christians have a lot to learn from our Muslim counterparts who would rather resolve their differences in private rather than bring shame to Islam and their mosques.
The freedom Nigerian women enjoys breeds the evil and abominable idea of feminism which is the driving force of false rape accusations. Timi and his foolish wife should be locked up and keys thrown in the ocean for bringing disrepute to Christianity. The federal government should enforce the death penalty for false accusations of rape . Until this is done, there will be more women coming out to bring men down with rape.
marylandcakes: You can try and order the plant off amazon.
Thanks!
Only seeds and dried fruits are sold on Amazon. The germination process is a bit tedious, such that I don't want to go through it. Would prefer a live plant. I will keep searching, I may likely get it from South Africa or Kenya, or even some other nearby countries.
marylandcakes: The elder plant can be used to to treat certain ailments like flu.
For many foragers, elder (Sambucus nigra) is the jewel in the crown. And there are so many simple and delicious ways of eating the flowers and the fruits you can see why.
It’s abundant throughout the UK, in woods and along roadside hedgerows. From late May you’ll see masses of tiny white flowers hanging in sprays which develop into purple elderberries later in the summer.
Elderflowers have many different culinary uses from drinks to deserts, so if you want to dip your toe into the world of foraging, they're a great place to start.
Meaghan and Harry’s cake was made out of Elderflower cordial
GeorgeTheCoder: How are the people supposed to pay for power on minimum wage ? When the government starts payinga reasonable wage - not $80 per month - you can come and talk.
People just wake up to compare things in naija to developed places. The Dubai guy should tell us what is the minimum wage in United Emirates vis-a-vis Nigeria.
The national minimum wage in USA is about $8.5USD/hr, which means about $1360USD per month. N30,000.00 that the guy mentioned is far above our minimum wage.
Our goods and services must be priced with our national minimum wage taken into consideration.
phinter: Cool but its more than backing the priest. Its actually doing mass according to tradition as done by the apostles of Christ. This was the way the apostles said mass. And the mass is the celebration of the death and resurrection of Christ. And so if the death and resurrection of Christ cannot change, it remains the same forever. Why should the mass change from the way the apostles of Jesus did it?
Check your Church history again. Even after the 1st council in Jerusalem, what is known as mass today had the form of a meal - breaking of the bread. How do you break the bread and share with the people backing them.
Nairasurplus: What is traditional mass? Is it celebrating holy mass with thing available in ones locality. For instance replacing mass wine imported from Spain with our natural palm wine. Is it not God that created palm wine. I thought mass is a form of prayer? Does a prayer have a format before God accepts it? Christians, open your eyes.
That is not traditional mass. Replacement of the wine with our palm wine would be termed as INCULTURATION. Part of the inculturation is why many hymns during mass are rendered in local languages, with local drums.
But traditional mass is mass where the priest backs the congregation for entire duration of the mass, and most of the prayers and even bible readings are done in Latin language. This is also called Tridentine mass. It was abandoned after the 2nd Vatican council of 1962-1965. But members of SSPX who are less than a 1000 worldwide still practice it, against the rules and directives of the Church.
Gerrard59: ...and he studied at INSEAD (AMP not MBA), worked at PwC and Zenith Bank. The dude is a classical mor0n.
I am yet to see how he is using all the above credentials for the benefit of the state. I wish he was allowed to fight for the position, and not handed to him on a platter. Once he started that 2billion (abi 5billion) mansion in his village, I knew this guy is not serious.
But in overall, I wish Akwa Ibom state a sustainable development. I don't care who is on seat.
I wish this initiative is private sector driven and sponsored by companies doing businesses in Akwa Ibom. A government initiative? A waste of money! Udom should know how to engage the private sector in the state to the benefit of the indigenes of the state. Where is the much touted technocrat in this man?
Principessa0: Good day all, I'm not sure about the best section to place this inquiry, hence, I've decided to leave it here hoping to get a response. I need to get my WAEC certificate sent from WAEC to World Education Service (WES). WES has received other transcripts and is awaiting document from WAEC. Although I have completed four years of post secondary education, WES is still requesting verification of my WAEC.
I understand from reading previous posts here that I have to go to WAEC office in Yaba to do this. I am not in Nigeria currently. Can I send someone to do this on my behalf? Is it acceptable? What document do I need to submit? etc. There is no comprehensive information on WAEC website about this (which is weird). Can someone who has done this please give me information concerning this.
Also, I started the WES verification process for Canada immigration purpose (EE), but I don't need it for that any more because I have relocated already without the verification. Now, I am looking to complete the process to further my studies at a university next year. Can I still use the same order or do I have to start the process all over selecting "Education (Student)" as purpose for the order?
Please if you have any information, please share. Thanks in Advance
Ask a friend or family in Nigeria to buy WEAC scratch card, then send the PIN code to you. Then send the code to WES together with WAEC website. They will verify it that way!
Britstar: The Catholic church will forbid you from partaking in certain sacraments until you're wedded in Church.
The wedding done in the Catholic Church is a sacrament in itself. And mandatory for all catholics. The good side is that a priest can Wed you or anybody without the flamboyance people display today. People have wedded during morning mass, or even during their TM and it is a valid sacrament in the Church. NO Catholic priest will insist on white wedding. You can put on anything for the ceremony, and it must not be followed by any form of entertainment.
It is we who like competing with ourselves on whose wedding is/was most expensive.
blujoi: Thanks for sharing the video, what I actually had in mind for wanting to contact you was to guide/help me with how to get international market for these essential oils, I already have access to coconut oil, how do I get international buyers for it
How to get international buyers?
First of all, try and satisfy domestic demands while working on achieving premium quality of your product(s). One of the major challenges facing Nigerian farmers and producers in the international market is product integrity. We hardly understand what is required, and our agencies are not really helping.
When you think you have what it takes to go international, register on alibaba.com, Amazon, eBay and other ecommerce platforms.
biztip: I opened this thread so DT people can also learn and not to tell people DT I have steady light. why will I do that. no one here knows me. I have business that I do. as I said I initially did d setup for entertainment and comfort but later started getting thoughts of other things to do with it since I can't even exhaustits capacity. as for ur question. d setup can power everything even electric heater
Then look at ways of adding value to our agric produce. Production of essential oils requires small space, but the products are very expensive and sought after in the international market. Eg lemon grass oil, lemon seed oil, garlic oil, lavender oil. Or you can process moringa oil. Another value addition is making chocolate from our cocoa. Onitsha is not far away from Edo where they are good quantity of cocoa. Chocolate production is easy, but most Nigerians are afraid to go in.
On your power source, are you sure it can power electric heater? If so, it means it can power AC too. I need such unit at that moderate amount.
Just with all ur sabines u shud no that no body wud drop d 411 for a hot business for free Who does dat??
U always reserve ur best cards..... So don't diss us abeg abeg!!!!
We Nigerians r one heck of a hard-working nation
People who manage to buy 50k generator are doing steady businesses, yet this OP invested 2m to get power but no idea what to do with it. Yet he is castigating others for not giving him ideas.
Maybe he just wanna tell us he has steady power.
Oga OP, what is your power capacity? Aside TV and maybe computers, what else can it power? You can extract essential oil from our herbs and plants. You can do coconut/moringa oils. Very sought after in the international market. You can do freeze drying of our herbs, vegetables and spices for international markets.
If na only computer you solar fit power, as someone suggested, go to YouTube and learn how to build websites. Build and maintain websites for all those spare parts shops in Onitsha.
Some of us like the taste of it more than these your foreign breeds.
@OP. The problem we have in this part of the world is the proliferation of "lazy" farmers who want to be spoon-fed and not ready to conduct experiments.
The sad reality is very little has been written about the indigenous Nigerian chicken breed and your interest is an avenue to expand more on that knowledge base.
As a pointer to the way to go, why don't you test run a mini project on the local chickens.
Get 2 groups of these chicken consisting of 1 cock and 5 hens.
The first group will be raised in a close intensive unit, with you providing daily meals(mainly grains like corns and beans).
The second group will be free range of 1 cock and 5 hens( you won't provide any food for these)
Both groups will have good shelters with space for egg laying.
Both groups will have a vet or drugs from a vet to reduce losses due to diseases. You might need to consult with the nearest veterinary clinic to you and also ask questions on likely diseases and prevention.
Study these 2 groups for one year and compare their weight, growth rate and get answers to all the questions you need like which method is better, how many birds will I get in a year, etc.
Finally launch your main project with the 50 birds following the best techniques you learnt from your mini project. Share your knowledge.
Very apt suggestions. As you rightly put it, most Nigerians don't want to research or experiment.
In the mid to late 90s, we did the semi intensive approach of keeping this local breeds. We feed then in the morning, then let them into a fenced area where they eat leaves, worms and drink water put in strategic areas. They were very prolific and gained weight rapidly. We also tried crossing the local breeds with some foreign breeds. They outcome was very impressive. This family venture paid for a good part of mine and my siblings' University education.
Sadly, we neither documented it nor published our findings.
Pavore9: Instead of always getting through press conferences, the Nigerian Agricultural Quarantine Service should intensify efforts enlightening Nigerians on required standards that needs to be met for export
They should also look into their officials who are at the Lagos international airport, a good number of them are crooks, you bring things into Nigeria with the accompanying Phytosanitary certificates, which they themselves certify as genuine but would boldly ask you to give them money if you want your stuff to leave the airport.
Same thing if you are taking any food material for personal consumption out of the country. They charge your 3k( as at 2015) and give you a fake receipt.
I am suspecting someone in their establishment got paid, but never did the required certification. These are the people making the cost of business extra high in Nigeria.
While I abhor domestic violence in any form, I have a question or 2 about the said loan. Where did the woman borrow the money for the husband (abi horseband)? Bank, friend, relative or herself? Was the husband carried along during the loan procurement?
Some spouses are in the habit of telling their partners that the money is a loan from somewhere, whereas, it is their money. If the partner discover this, then that money is gone. Men and women alike.
Be it as it may, it shouldn't lead to physical abuse.
