Thank you for sharing this emotional story. This problem exists everywhere, and can be more violent here in Naija. I have a desire of having a market where only farmers sell - Farmers' market. I am still doing feasibility studies on the workability and what is involved. This can easily be done with co-operative society, but the distrust among Nigerians makes co-operative looks a herculean task. |

gatiano: It would bring in revenue, but most of it to the private owner and taxes to the govt. And that money in taxes won't be mathematically balanced to be used on people, even if corrupted officials don't swindle it. Such money would be used to develop the surroundings of the mall. The only thing that seems to be beneficial is that the mall will employ people, 120 staffs, while 5000 people loose their small businesses and their livelihood.
In a country such as Nigeria, whose population is very high and growing at a fast rate, small businesses should seriously be encouraged and big businesses should allow a lot of partnership especially the foreign companies. Guy, your line of argument is making me curious. When you say 5000 people will loose that small business, how do you mean? Is the place erected where others were doing business before? What do you think should be the proper thing? Government own and government run? Or possibly make things there free or subsidized? I have read all your posts here and I get confused the more. The area of people loosing their business or jobs is what I don't still get. We all clamour for investors, now these guys are here (assuming your assertion that they are private coy is correct), you are saying they should not be welcomed or allowed to operate? |

walemglobal: @ plasgidy, we feel a bit of politeness should have convey your concerns rather than the derogatory one above. There is nothing like secret cult here, we know our products than you possibly do and there are things to consider (Place of deployment, qty of materials required for each installation- length of cabling required etc,)
All these would determine the final cost of the system. These are not mere "supply"of a thing. In lieu of this, it is not practical to list price here. If you are interested, nothing bad in dropping some lines and we would get in touch with you in due course. When I saw the word portable, I thought the product is something I can buy and take home. But, from your post which I quote here, you assert you have to take some factors into considerations. So, I have few questions; Do you make supply/installations in the South-South? Do you have to inspect the house or business before pricing? I have a structure I wish to install constant power, can you provide the solution? |
Agriculture › Re: I Can’t Resist Telephone Farming by Curiouscity(m): 2:58pm On May 09, 2015 |
Pavore9: This happens to be a write-up l follow up here every Saturday, it is hilarious side of agriculture though one gets to learn lessons from it. l added conversions and explain somethings Nigerians may not understand. So read on.
I am not moneyed. This is a fact I have accepted to live with, perhaps for the rest of my life. Each day, I struggle to make an extra shilling. I struggle even harder not to lose any money.
In the ongoing craze to have a side hustle, I thought of utilising my rural home land, which my ageing father had passed to me by word of mouth as inheritance.
When we were growing up, we used to plant a lot of sukuma wiki (collard green) and cabbages on the land. A lot of market women at the local trading centre kept on coming for the vegetables and all I can remember was my father insisting he would not go a cent lower, they either buy or leave.
Living in the city, the craze of agribusiness caught up with me. My bank has this multi-coloured poster on soft agribusiness loans and in it is a young man holding many notes of Sh1,000 (N2,100) with his mouth wide open screaming, “All this from my half acre, Sweet Money… Try farming today! Come for our agribusiness Vijanaa loan!”
Interestingly, the poster doesn’t say where this man does his farming or whatever he grows.
Without thinking twice, I sought Sh200,000 (N420,000) loan. I am not dumb to pump all the money on one crop. I allocated Sh100,000 (N210,000) for rice on the three acres and Sh70,000 (N147,000) for tomatoes. I can’t tell how I spent Sh30,000 (N62,000) only that I still have the suit I bought for my official functions.
The loan was attached to my small salary not worth mentioning here. My projections were that I would earn about Sh18,000 (N37,800) every month. After repaying Sh10,000 (N21,000) , things started to fall apart.
I realised my income projections were figments of my mind. For the first six months, Muchiri, my farm boy’s phone number became more frequent than my girlfriend’s.
I developed an automatic response to his calls. Instead of saying hi, I would shout back, “What again?”
Every Friday, it would either be money for pesticide or seedlings. You can’t dillydally when you are told some funny insects have invaded your favourite tomato farm.
The first Mpesa message (the message you get money when you receive money in your phone and you cash it from thousands of Money Agents around) bearing the proceeds from my venture screamed Sh9,500 (N19,950) The second was Sh6,400 (N13,440) and it came when I was very broke on a Saturday afternoon.
I remember the last one because my balance was Sh00.00 for about a week. So when Sh3,300 (N6,930)flew in, I was elated. However, the accompanying message from the farm boy was ominous, “We need to prepare for another season as all tomatoes are over”.
What? Only Sh19,200 (N40,320)from Sh70,000 (N147,000)investment? Let me not even talk about my rice farm. I activated my intelligence-gathering skills. A source told me my farmhand, Muchiri, was busy patronising Florida Bar & Restaurant every Saturday and Sunday.
He also regularly visited Kamuka Agrovet where we buy our inputs, walking in with a green paper bag (nylon bag) which he never came out with.
I expanded my intelligence gathering network and met Wanjau, a shamba boy (farm boy) working for my neighbour. He offered freely, “You are paying Muchiri a lot. He is bragging he will get married next year. His two pregnant girls want to move into your farm”.
The shocking but juicy story startled me as I learned Muchiri had impregnated two Form Three (SS2) girls at a local school.
So when the other day my sister Muthoni Wathika implored that I partner with her in a farming project, I rejected the bait without blinking.
But my persistent sister was on my neck. She gave me an example of Wanjiku and her younger brother Gituro from Mwea.
“They agreed to hire employees who are not their relatives or who do not hail from their area,” Wathika pressed on. “Family members take things casually; they will never make money for you.”
“We will avoid planting “delicate” crops that require a lot of daily attention.”
One thing caught my ear, though. “We have to do market research on what we want to grow” she said as a matter of fact. “Many aspiring farmers jump into things they do not understand,” she added.
The talk encouraged me as once again I pictured myself as a successful telephone farmer. I have been thinking seriously of what to farm, but the right crop or the animal have eluded me. May be Wathika has better ideas.
Meanwhile, the desire to receive those Mpesa messages every Saturday – but this time they must always be in five digits – is killing me.
I know I am still repaying my loan even as my farm lies idle and Muchiri still waits to prey on me. I am not sure when I will go into farming, but for it to happen, Muchiri must go. Insightful story to learn from! |

I shake my head the way some of us interpret the bible. When Paul talked about temperance, did he also talk about avoiding gluttony? Why then don't we condemn all of us because we all eat. Eating excess food leads to GLUTTONY, while drinking excess wine leads to DRUNKENNESS. What is the difference?? |

I know I am here late, not many people will have patience to reach here.
Many Nigerian Christians feel they know the bible and the Jewish culture which the bible was based upon than people who wrote the bible. Nearly every bible verse that mention alcoholism also mention gluttony. In fact there are roughly 38 verses in the bible that condemn GLUTTONY and about 10 that warns against DRUNKENNESS. Both are sins of same magnitude. Why then do we keep quiet on gluttony and get excited working all sort of food industry, yet condemn people making a living in the wine industry?
Some Nigerian Christians are either ignorant of their bible or just hypocrites!! |

If dem no wan access TETFUND make dem use the money construct industries for graduates nah! Abi na crime day make people dey employed? lol. Guy, I am not a staff of TETfund, nor am I a beneficiary. But we must hold our leaders accountable, from our immediate constituencies such as schools. Not everything we must blame the government(i.e president and governors). Now talking about industries. By now you should know that any government has no business in building an industry. Any industry built and managed by any government will collapse within yrs. They can have a stake or large share in a company and allow it run like a 'crown cooperation'. Eg of such should be our PHCN. How do you create employments? If a serious researcher gets a research grant, he can hire a research assistants and other staff. Is this not employment? If a vc uses the allocated amount to build hostels, libraries, new and functional labs, is it not Nigerians that will do the construction? who will be employed to maintain and oversee the running of those places? The government can only create a conducive environment for industrialization which they have failed greatly. But we have a big role to play. Another thing is we Nigerians especially the youths must start to embrace Nigerian brands. What industries will employ when we don't patronize made in Nigeria products? Nigerians wants to turn 'onyigbo' overnight without making the sacrifices that those guys made in their countries. |

The truth is most Nigerians wants to be spoon fed. Go to tetfund webesite http://www.tetfund.gov.ng/index.php/projects/reconcilled-projects you will see money for capital and developmental projects lying idle. All the money for conference attendance, publication and research grants have all been collected. Do you know why? Most VC's, deans, HODs or even lecturers can attend imaginary conferences, recycle research project and get funding yearly. But the money for capital projects need evidence of execution before another one is given. There is high level of corruption in our tertiary institutions. Is it too hard to show what you used the money for last year and demand for a new one? Everyone hears that government is not funding research in our universities, who collects all the research grants listed? Must the government do everything for us? Or put it differently, who are the government? Is it not me, U, our dad, mum, uncles, friends that are working in all these places? We are just too hard to please. BiHung: well..i am a scholar.... And i access funds from other govt sources... But if truly and sincerely the govt wants to help our universities..rather than withhold these funds due to poor accountability..they should execute projects directly for the Unis. There is actually no master plan of how each university should grow. No direction or Vision. Well, I don't know where you live or are studying. If you study in the western universities, you will notice that their government allocate what is called "counterpart funding" to them. They access that money based on needs and must account for it. They are independent verifications. During my graduate studies, I witnessed my supervisor used more than a week to apply for a research grant. It was so detailed to the last penny, yet when released, he has to sign for the money anytime he accessed it. If tertiary institutions that are grooming the populace do not follow due process and accountability, then where will we learn these important aspects of civil responsibility? One of our major problem is we want the government to do everything for us. What you are suggesting is like, you give your younger bros money to build his house. After a year, he comes to you for more money, and you demand to know what stage the house is. Instead of telling you, he storms out of your house and query your trust on him. After some interventions, he ask you to build him the house since he can not account for previous money. How logical does it sound? |
Politics › Re: Jonathan Tells Varsities To Access N1.3tr Tetfund Money by Curiouscity(m): 12:27am On Apr 19, 2015 |
BiHung: u are most definitely ignorant. Tetfund is only a policy creation...just like Needs, MDGs etc. Yes...a certain percent of national revenue must be made 'available' for universities...but the FG has its way of coverting such funds (or if you may...borrowing from such funds) by making it available only in principle. Many universities have requested to use out of the 'Tetfund' for research grants, scholarship and facility improvement...but they only get peanuts granted by the FG. Or Why do you think ASUU went on strike again?
Making policies and Signing agreements with ASUU has never been a problem...the problem is RELEASING THE money. Truth is the money is not available .. It is just there in principle and a hogwash for ignoramuses like you.
Learn to do investigative journalism and don't just be dogmatic. Guy, I think you need to do some verifications. Agreed most programs are sources of corruption in Nigeria, but TETfund is real. Go to their site: http://www.tetfund.gov.ng/index.php/projects/reconcilled-projects to see how much have been allocated each year to tertiary institutions. But because the admins of those institutions can't account for previous allocations, the money lie there. Most schools use theirs properly. Do a bit of search and you will be surprise. This fund started way back before GEJ's government, so it is not about GEJ. We should appreciate good things and ask our intitutions for accountability. If you are a student, ask your school why seats and lecture spaces are still insufficient when this kind of money is available. If you are a lecturer, avail yourself and ask your dean/HOD to support you to access this money. |

allycat: Funds from Tetfund are available. I know because I work in a university and every year they send out memos for research proposals, however the criteria is very stringent and many lecturers are just publishing for promotion not really to add to the body of knowledge. The few that go through the rigorous process get their funds. The kind of proposal they require is like you are doing a proposal for PHD thesis in a top foreign university, you have to calculate to the last penny what the funds are meant for and these projects are meant to cover years of research not 3 month papers that you can write without ever leaving your office. Every year they advertise and all the deans I have worked with complain of the lackadaisical attitude of lecturers. Thank you for saying the truth. Most Nigerians want this money to be given anytime they want without showing anything for it. Even for some that are able to access the fund, first thing they do is buy a new car, build house if they had none, and marry new wife. Most Nigerian lecturers don't have a big picture, just their pockets. Presently, I know of 3 friends in a state university studying outside Nigeria courtesy of TETfund. |

Thank The bold statements above is the bane of true development in Nigeria. We are too selfish!! While the 'white-man' is jealous that we Africans live a communal life, we are trying hard to segregate and out-do one another. What stops a whole community from having one large biodigester in a corner of the community, then the output distributed to people's home? What happens to the communities and communal life that we were known for? Real Estate developers should be forward thinking in fostering communal resources, not only in the case of biogas, but other utilities. Imagine 10 tenants in a compound with ten different small generators ("I pass my neighbor" . Why can't the landlord buy one big gen and everyone pays for fuel as part of the rent? I think NUC should make it mandatory that lecturer and their courses be evaluated anonymously at the end of the semester. Though I know some students are unserious with their studies and would write bad report about any lecturer they dislike, evaluation should say if the lecturer is fit to continue with the said course. A five-year or ten-year period should be used, if evaluation of a lecturer points to a particular weakness for this period, he should be called to order, or the course taken from him. Most lecturers act as if they have the key to your graduation because they are the only one teaching a core course.
On students' part, you guys need to wake up and reduce the amount you spend on social media. For most students, the internet is a curse rather than a blessing. |
