So I was scrolling through Upwork's Facebook page today and they asked the question "What are your tips for crafting a great proposal?" and this post seemed to stand out, I guess I am not the only one that has that secret anyway.

Carmal90:When it comes to cinematography, the best way to learn it is to do it, but if you can't find somewhere to do it and learn on the job, just watch the videos in this Playlist https://m.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLBWs5dCYykYXo6VmL9EuetvoLSH8bEHlt It will help you cos you will find some of the things you see here inside editing softwares. |
mrsteel:As always, i will advise learning the camera and how it works first, that is the most basic thing, many video editors are out there but they don't even know the reason why they should export at 24 fps or 30 fps, some don't even care, they just export with whatever preset they see, don't be that kind of editor, learn basic camera terms, then dive into premiere, if you don't learn some basic camera terms, you will get confused while watching some parts of the premiere tutorial. |
ewizard1:You can reach me with - - - I will be taking off the mail soon, so please let me know when you have copied it. |
Millennialaku:Hello, good day sir. You are having this problem because you did not rasterize the layer in after effects, make sure you rasterize every layer while working, that way, you don't get a blury job. I have attached where you will find the rasterize layer option in case you don't know where to find it. Also, the market for animation is very good, there are lots of animation jobs that pays well, though I try to run away from animations cos it will take a lot of my time, so I just work on intros, outros, and some quick after effects fixes, but generally, there are a lot of good paying animation and after effects jobs if you are good at what you do. Also, move away from 2015 already (except your pc can't properly run higher versions) there are so many things you are missing out, also, I used to have the same encoder error when I was using 2015, it is a glitch that came with the crack, just upgrade and make sure you have the same version and year of AE, PP and ME installed, it will work flawlessly

Salako01:Hello sir, good morning. Sending a winning proposal is a very key aspect of getting jobs, first of all, clients does not want to know the thousands of years you have been working as a graphics designer or stuff, they just want to know if you have done something similar to theirs and can get theirs done well, I see a lot of people write "I have been working as a Video editor for the last 6 years, and I have a degree in bla bla bla", clients are not interested in your life story, in fact, most clients read only the first 2-3 lines of your proposal cos they usually have many more to read, they don't have that time, so your first 2 lines should be what you spend time on, do not copy and paste proposals on every job you see, craft and modify each proposal to suite the job you are applying for, most times, you have a very short time to do so, always make sure your proposal is amongst the first 5, or 10 latest, anything above that, your chances to land that job has lowered, also, take the focus away from you when submitting a proposal and put the focus on the client and the job, introduce yourself very briefly, and then go straight to what you can offer them, tell them what you will be doing to their project, and what they will get if they hire you, try as much as possible to take out "I" from your proposal, Eg, instead of saying "I will add a professional graphic title to your video to highlight the point" why don't you make it like this " Just watched your footage and Your job requires a professional graphic to highlight the point" This way, you have told them what you intend to do without using "I" while shifting the attention to the job. don't base on how much experience you have, and also, get the clients names from past reviews if you can, it helps to stand you out, the client will be wondering how you got to know their name, it works like magic. your Upwork portfolio should be your first redirection, and Upwork has made it easier by allowing you to automatically select what portfolio skill you will want to send to the client while applying for a job, so make your profile very catchy too, the first 2-3 paragraphs are very important too, don't write an epistle there, be brief, concise and let your words be loaded, For me though, I have a website with my name as the URL, apart from sending my Upwork portfolio to them, I also send my freelance portfolio site to them if they require more samples, I have put a couple of my best works across various niches there, so if a client wants to see my past job, I send them the link. Thou most times, your Upwork portfolio is enough to convince them (of course if you have enough good jobs there) I also will advise everyone to make sure they know their trade well before selling on Upwork, remember you are dealing with Europeans, Americans, Australians, etc, and most times, because they have seen quality jobs, they usually have a very high standard for their jobs, you don't want to have a bad review on your first job, trust me. So to round up, just upload your previous jobs to your Upwork profile portfolio and that is enough for now. |
Carmal90:After Effects is in no way a video editing software, it is a composting software, used for animations, visual effects, kinetic typography/motion graphics, etc, anyone who advises you to learn editing from after effects either does not know anything about editing, or is just trying to discourage you. The most basic place to start as an editor is to learn basic camera terms, how it works, and if possible, learn how to handle cameras, it will give you an edge over many cut and join editors, editing is an art on its own, apart from the actual story in the movie, your editing/cinematography should be able to tell its own story, if it doesn't, then you are failing. Learning basic camera terms like Fstop, Saturation, Exposure, Contrasts, Depth of field, etc, will help you when setting up a sequence and to export well, else, you may have problems playing your videos on some devices, or you may even get a Laffy footage, so to answer your question, After Effects is not a video editing software, Adobe suite is a complete set of softwares, and Premiere is the video editing software amongst them, after effects is too advance for someone who doesn't understand simple premiere. Will find time to share some cinematography/editing books that will help you immensely. Also, the world of Videography is a very fast evolving one, you have to constantly keep your self up with the trends, else, you will just wake up to realize one day that your peers are in 2039 while you are still in 2020, so watch a lot of tutorials, burn the data, learn. |
ewizard1:Hello people, I am sorry I have not been able to reply the many personal messages I have received from this thread, please note that it is not my intention as I do not have access to the mail, so I can't reply.. Secondly, I think I will prefer to answer questions here on the thread, so that it can be here for many to read and learn, bro, if your queries are not very private, (of which I can give out my contact) then I prefer to answer them here for the benefit of everyone reading... Venzal:No sir, i think things have changed, before you can begin a contact, you have to undergo the verification process which includes even a video call, i was asked for my ID even before i began a contract, i used to have various notifications at the top of my screen saying i can not start a contract yet until i submit my ID. |
Venzal:Yeah, exactly, when I see the number of proposals, I'm like, how the hell do new comers make it in this niche now? |
Venzal:Yeah, but trust me bro, writing is much more saturated, a job posted 5 mins ago has over 15 proposals already, and as an upwork plus freelancer, i can see the bids, and there are some bids that are very low, tho if you can successfully build a good profile, your work will speak for you and you won't have to struggle again. sometimes, a job posted 10 mins ago on video production, UI design, etc will have about 5 proposals. |

Unfortunately, i don't, sorry sir, and about mentoring, i can only drop by to help time by time, i cant closely mentor, please understand, me, but i sure can give instructions and help out with questions. i will, however, give you a video where you will basically learn almost everything there is to learn about the editing software i use, it is one of the most used in the world, you can buy the software at computer village for 200 naira, or download it here https://usersdrive.com/03drhb7clqad.html then you can digest this 4 hours tutorial on video editing, follow it bumper to bumper, learn as much as you can, rewatch over and over again if you have to, for me, i studied video production in school, but I think this video is quite comprehensive for anyone who wants to learn https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=seP6Yqx4BaY |
Crazeworld:People, I am so sorry I haven't been able to reply your questions, I am so overwhelmed with work, let me briefly answer your questions. 1. Yes, my account is bodly stamped with "LAGOS NIGERIA" ![]() 2. Interview is basically the second stage of the hiring process, it is just like the real life interview where you submit your CV (proposal), apply for a job and if your CV looks impressive, you are contacted to come for an interview with whoever is hiring, now an interview as always does not guarantee that you have the job, writing a catchy proposal is only the first step, you have to hit the nail on the coffin with the interview, because most times, you are not the only one being interviewed for that job, so impress your client with your interview stage and soon enough l, you will be hired. 3. One of the edge upwork has over other freelance sites is that it has long term benefits, you will eventually get to a stage that your job will speak for you, you don't need to do anything, I have a policy, any job I take, I do it well, it doesn't matter if the pay is $5, in fact, I have done a $5 job before, and guess what? That client referred 2 other people to me, I didn't even need to ask him, do your best in your job cos it is your greatest testimony, clients don't want to hear the thousands of years and gibberish you have been saying, it's all about "show me what you can do" or "what you have done", many of my clients heard about me from previous clients I worked with, I just accepted another job today for 300 dollars, $100 per video, and I never submitted any proposal, it was referral. I am an upwork plus client, so I have a profile link, they just refer people to my profile link and that's all. 4. Yes, some clients are not on upwork, and are not even interested in joining, so you have to find other ways to get paid, upwork direct contract is not available in Nigeria yet, so I receive using payoneer, but i try my best to persuade the clients to hire via upwork cos it builds my profile on upwork, in fact, on my upwork profile, I have earned just about 3k dollars, the rest are via other means of payment, try as much as you can to keep your payments on upwork, it has long term benefits. 5. Well, they are not cool with it, but being on upwork doesn't make upwork my employer na, If I got the client via upwork, I get paid via upwork, I even prefer getting paid there, though sometimes when I calculate the large amounts upwork has taken from me, I feel like they are being wicked, but I still prefer being paid there, but if the client is gotten outside of upwork and doesn't want to join upwork, I still get paid, I don't care about their 20%. 6. No, I did not doubt for once that things won't work out, my doubt or concern was just how long does it have to take to get there, I have seen people who have spent over 20M dollars paying clients on upwork, those people receiving that pay, dem no get 2 heads na, so me sef must partake, so I didn't doubt, I only was worried about how long. I'm not top rated yet, I've seen top rated video editors from Nigeria who have earned over 10k dollars sef, but I believe I will get there someday, persistence is key. 7. I do have a source of income outside upwork, I am a part time staff of an organization, and I am not obligated to come everyday I work for 2-3 hours Sunday, Wednesday and Thursday weekly, but due to Corona, I now work only Tuesdays for about 4 hours, the pay is fairly good for the Nigerian standard, the reason I am part time is because they were unwilling to pay what I asked for full time back then, now, I only work there because I love the job, not because of the money, my upwork earnings is enough to sustain me for now, I'm not married, so I don't have so much responsibilities, I am not the type that loves to show off or live flamboyant lifestyles either, so I am not really eating deep into my pocket, I am planning and preparing for the future and if everything works out fine, upwork should be able to sustain even my family when I eventually get married (in years to come though), I average a monthly income of about 200-300k, in my room without shirt and on boxers, no need for suit, no need to wake up by 5am to board danfo to work so I won't be late, no need for insults from conductors, nothing nothing, just pure bliss, and this month looks even better. But don't get it twisted, I basically work for the whole day, you can't be lazy and be on upwork, especially when you are just starting up, the only difference is that I don't have any boss to command me, I start to work any time I want (takes a lot of discipline to decide to work every day) I have not skipped working for even a day since like 3 months now, I make sure I hit an average of at least 20k daily, sometimes, i don't, but that is only because I probably woke up by 12pm or so, after working till 4 or 5am, but at least 15k for a day, another thing that takes so much from me is voiceover, I have paid almost 5h dollars on voice overs alone just cos I no get Yankee accent, so I have to hire Americans which is frustrating and expensive. All in all sha, upwork is great, though I feel any field that has to do with writing is already too saturated. |

I tried upwork sometime in 2016 and was rejected, I gave up and continued life as a Video director, then sometime in November 2019, I was at a very low point in my life, finances was not coming in as much as it should, I was managing. That time was one of the times I thought so much about my life, I pondered on so many businesses I could startup with the finance I had, but then, I finally decided to try upwork again, and, I did, and was accepted instantly, before trying, I read a lot of articles on opening an upwork account, I knew the questions that were asked while opening already, so I took my time to properly write it, and just copied and pasted in their respective fields, I was glad, but that was just the beginning, upwork was not friendly for starters at all, it was difficult, I was wasting my connects applying for any and every job I see, I never got even an interview, then I went online and read about writing proposals, studied it very well, watched over 6 hours of upwork related tutorials on YouTube, watched a video editor called Jack Cole on YouTube, he is a freelancer video editor on upwork, watched so many of his tutorials and built on it, by that time, my free 20 connects were long gone already, I was not discouraged, I bought 20 connects again and again, while still studying writing a catchy proposal, until I mastered the art, I finally got a job for a monthly pay of $100 dollars making a short 2 minutes video daily, it was not the best, but i needed the reviews, so I took the job anyways, all this time, I never left my main job o, by the way, this client was the most frustrating person I have ever done business with in my life, it started well at first, he was a naval officer in Australia, I was doing well until my village people remembered me, all of a sudden, my laptop crashed, see wahala I, tried fixing, all to no avail, na there problem start, I had to be running to my friends house every day to use his pc to get the job done and send to this man, my motivation was not the pay, it was the much needed review, I was to submit a video latest by 9pm daily, 9:05pm, this man is already on my whatsapp asking where the video was, ah ah, see wahala o, for $100 dollars? Well, I endured and kept on working, I took out some money to get a manageable 4gb ram laptop that wanted to frustrate my life, for those that are into video production, you will understand how terrible it is to run premiere on a 4gb core i3 laptop, you will almost be crying, if you are not careful, you will slam the laptop on the floor, exporting a 2 minutes clip can take up to an hour, everything was just frustrating, I endured it, I had no choice, I was determined, I loved upworks premium feel, I hated fiver due to the way those Indians have littered everywhere with their terrible English while sending proposals, plus, upwork had longterm benefits, so I stuck with upwork, anyways, after the first month of working with this man, enduring everything and making sure I was on time, I told the man I was increasing my rates, he asked how much, I told him 1k dollars, the man shock, I said it just to ward him off, cos if I decide to just pull out, he may give me a bad review and that will defeat the whole purpose of my 1 month suffering, he wanted to pay 200 a month, I no gree, I run before him frustrate me, well, he tried to pay me 6h dollars for a livestream job where he wanted me to be streaming at least 20 hours of music every day to his YouTube channel (just imagine as money too much for this man o), well, I rejected, where will I get stable unlimited internet in Nigeria and also stable 24 hours light? Or is it with my small 4gb Laptop I will use to stream? Wetin I want come use edit? Well, I was sad that I left my only job, and went back to the labor market (upwork) for a new job, by the way, before I landed my first job, I spent over 1 month submitting proposals without even an interview, back to the story, after about 2 more weeks, I have almost exhausted the 100 dollars on connects again, I landed another low paying job, 30 freaking godam sports videos for 300 dollars, who does that? 1 Video can take me 4 hours to make o, anyways, they say a bird at hand is better than hundreds in the sky, I accepted the job, and completed the project, this client was far more understanding, unlike the first guy that almost made me start going on x videos to get the particular sultry (but not porn) videos he wanted me to work on. ![]() Completed the project, and got more, it was low paying and wasn't the best, but i enjoyed it cos I loved football, and editing football clips was fun for me, from there, I got another client which was moderately fair, to cut the long story short, about 3 months down the line, I had earned over 1.5k dollars, some weeks ago, I just got my JSS badge with 94%, I am in my 3rd top rated eligible week, with over 6k earnings already, I don't do jobs less than $100 dollars, the same sports videos I did for $10 each back then, I don't do for less than $200 each now, my whatsapp is filled with clients from all over the world, yesterday, I declined 2 invitation to interview, I have about 6 long term clients that I earn nothing less than 5h dollars per week from, apart from the occasional clients that comes to me every now and then to work for them, I have a constant assurance of $300 weekly from one of my hourly job, i have over 120 connects in my account untouched, cos I don't even have to submit proposals, jobs just comes, I accepted a new job yesterday, today, I got a text all the way from US asking me to work for him (referrals),i am thinking of downgrading my account to the regular upwork account cos I don't think I will be needing their connects anytime soon, so they can stop taking my 15 dollars monthly, moral of the story. Doing those jobs all those times, enduring the pressure, the constant struggle to keep up, the competition, reinvesting all my earnings into upwork at some point, my first 3 earnings went back to upwork, I didn't even withdraw, it was difficult, it was never easy, I was very discouraged, I almost gave up, but i am glad I didn't. Today, my dear 4gb ram laptop has become decoration on my desk, used sparingly to write scripts, i now own 2 8gb ram laptops, core i7, a 16gb ram core i7, and a 32gb ram core i7, all bought from upwork earnings, the rest they say is history, I am glad I took this path, don't give up, be professional, try as much as you can to please your clients, I have 3 other people working under me, I am even thinking of how to properly establish the company and employ more with upwork being my major source for clients, I have lots of good reviews to the extent that even upwork is asking me to submit my cv so they can see the possibility of dissolving me into one special freelance package wey me no even understand sef, but it has benefits according to them sha, it is well my people. Just felt to share my story to encourage you all.
