silent hill, people seem to love that game. I never played it. recently tried silent hill 4 for a short time, and got bored (my fault, was real tired)

crytek- looks reeeeally cool but, yaaaaaaaaawn. Graphics just dont do it for me anymore. was playing tombraider legend last night. Graphics were so superior to the xbox360 version that i found myself feeling like an idiot for participating in next gen spec-wars (this is a PC version of the game). yet, the only thing i noticed was how hard it was to switch targets in battle (just read a faq on it and will try out the new technique when I get home, hope it works, this may ruin the game, )

integrated chipsets are only a bad thing when u act like an asshole like intel; and dont include expansion slots. However pci express is not a dedicated video expansion, so they wont do that this time around, meaning the igfx will actually be a good thing (more pcs capable of playing games AT ALL even at reduced specs.)

it will be good for LAN parties, cos on a serious LAN we always turn off ALL the graphics anyway!!!!!

as to the final yan where u said gfx are driving innovation, you failed to refute the evidence i gave where the graphically superior consoles are defeated again and again in the console race, instead telling me why other factors were invovled! if thats the case, I'll beg to differ. Nintendo themselves have tried to lead the pack with power before, with the N64, and failed miserably. Later, xbox led the pack and ps2 (least powerful console) still won.

graphical power is good, but it is gameplay innovation that usually wins.

Turbografx and megadrive fought NES for so long and failed to catch on despite superior graphics. SNES eventually took over because of

* New controller with many buttons (eventually copied by sega)
* Mode 7 ( created new forms of gameplay despite being primitive-looking)

in the next generation, Saturn failed against PS despite better specs and more powerful hardware (albeit difficult to program, like ps3. ps1 was dev heaven, i gather). N64 failed against ps despite by far superior graphics. PSX won due to:


* CD storage- allowed for fmv's and speech which made some new types of game which were impossible on n64- not on saturn, though
* 3d hardware- despite being inferior to the 3d hardware in saturn, it was easier to use, so the innovative new games shined better on ps
* analog control- this innovation was invented by nintendo, and to tell the truth, 3d gaming would NEVER have caught on if not for this. Sony won by quickly leveraging their high install base gotten by innovating with 3d and cd-multimedia


the following generation saw the least innovation, and is indeed the only generation where sheer graphical power was the deciding factor.

The problem is that today, the success of ps2 has made most industry personnel forget the fact that the graphics of ps1 were sufficiently bad for a graphical update console to be a great leap forward. Not the case today.

case in point: I recently got a radeon x800 for my pc, and played a very recent game, prey. The graphics are mind-bogglingly good, and better than anything a console can produce today without the aid of HDTV.

the motion sensing controller is not a gimmick. analog control was not a gimmick. shoulder buttons were not a gimmick. the ds stylus is not a gimmick. ALL the previous inovations changed the face of gaming. even you call the dual analog shoulder button equipped pad 'perfect'. you would probably have called the SNES pad perffect before that, and the NES pad pefrfect before that.

wii control will make new games. Lets see what they are like, first. Rest assured if they are a big hit, your friends at sony will copy wholesale (like they did with shoulderbuttons and analog styicks!) and better than that stupid joke they pulled at e3!

Men,on solcalibur we were playing the "vs team battle" option and i kept using Heirachi,Kilik,Ivy(very bad chick)and Voldo and sometimes Mitsurugi, Raphael and Nightmare.I was "pad rubbing" like crazy but those guys were just too good.I only got around to winning one round and i was awfully proud of myself!

U somehow managed to choose the worst 'pad rubbing' characters of all! NEVER rub the pad with ivy! they will just kill you! That said, she's my favourite character! the best guy for pad scrubbing is MAXI. Kilik is also a bit good, but only if you are lucky. When you want to start playing the game proper, get a good tutor and learn Mitsurugi (just 30 mins or so) In no time the boys will be eatin' crow!

Reminds me of one chick from Holy Child back in the arcade days. She was SMOKING HOT (as in FINE), with loooooong hair, and this 'dont mess with me' look on her face. liked to dress in jeans and big t-shirts and was a killer on street fighter, which she used to play at madhouse and cheers I think. * you do NOT need a wide screen tv for the motion sensor to work because it uses positional sensing, not silly zapper-style light sensing. It can be calibrated for any screen size. In fact, it is ps3 and xbox that keep demanding that we buy HDTVs in order to truly appreciate their 'next gen graphics'. The wii is designed for standard def tvs. works for me.

* all the rubbish about wildly swinging arms around, needing space, and not needing a workout after work is just nonsense. Obviously most games wil require minimal movement, with small flicks of the wrist, you shouldnt get any more physical than you do during a healthy quake or other FPS session with a mouse.

Soulcalibur is a great game! One of the best! If those guys were such bad sports that they didnt allow you to get your footing in the game, you should just choose Maxi and scrub the pad like a maniac!!! In other words, the Japanese have modified the superhero idea to suit their culture. We may do something similar, but rather than copying the manga characters or just drawing men in spandex, maybe the artists here can come up with something original.

We have our own folklore, and our own brand of heroic fantasy. Our heroes and villains tend to use charms and commune with their ancestors rather than martial arts or mutant powers. Could it be possible that a great comic series be derived from this without being another 'eze the warrior prince' or other unappealing, village-bound tale?

superheroes are what most comic buffs will ask for to start with, so they are a great place to start.

However how do we co-opt the superhero idea to better suit our environment? simply having a superman clone called 'naijaman' or 'oduduwa warrior' or whatever doesnt cut the mustard.

The heroes of most japanese mangas can be called superheroes too, but they don't wear spandex. They are usually colurfully clothed ninjas or samurai that follow a pattern very different from the actual historical reality of these characters, or they are small girls/boys piloting giant robots.
