Pastor Kun:
The insignificant and insincere 'cuts' in expenditure as announced by GEJ yesterday does not even begin to scratch the surface of the problem yet some people are applauding for 'taking a step in the right direction'. Any step short of withdrawing the 2012 appropriation bill currently before the NASS and replacing it with one in which recurrent expenditures has been slashed to not more than 30% of budget as opposed to the current 70% and capital expenditure increased in the same proportion while also capturing the savings to be made from subsidy removal as an addition to the capital vote, would be totally unacceptable to Nigerians. This should not be a fight to retain an abusive and cancerous subsidy but rather a fight for good governance, prudent management of resources and accountability from our leaders so that we can all be collectively better off as a nation.
simple and stright to the point, labour and opposition have the moral high ground now, this is what i expect them to press for, instead people are pushing to get their marketer friends continue the cash milking,

some people forget that forums like this may serve as debating avenues where positions and shared and justified with logical reasoning, someone seekimg to better understand this issue of oil subsidy and deregulation enters this the hot topic of the moment would quickly loose interest, a number of post here have adopted the follow the crowd mentality approach, there is corruption, govt is eating money so we must get fuel cheaply, The leading clowns amongst them are quite aware that point for point they cannot back ther positions with solid arguements, hence the reason for the comical matter they have adopted to handle the issue

It is obvious that your stand on the issue is not driven by the FACTUAL details rather by ethnic sentiment. In my previous post, I asked you to explain to us what difference between deregulation and Price increase in a capitalist economny, but I am yet to read your 'common sense' explanation!
one of the learnings i can boast of getting from this deregulation issue is that intelligent opposition brings out intelligent governance, if by now you are not ashamed of attempting to drive protest with mob crowd mentality based on immidiate needs, then all i can offer you and the unfortunate ones cowed by you a profound appology, there is no redemtion for you.

If you call what GEJ has done partial deregulation, then you must be sick in the head! what obj and previous govts did before was simply price increase, what GEJ has done is partial deregulation, with deregulation govt is no longer involved in running the business of refining, products supply and distribution, they revert back to their primary responsibility of policy and regulation, deregulation will be complete when govt hands of the 4 refineries to private entties.
The increase in price is an unfortunate aspect of deegulation, which compition is expected to bring down later, even if not to 65naira. Now asking for price tol be reduced back to 65naira, you are saying govt should go back to managing the sector,
A position i vehemently oppose.

I have read much of your comments and you seems to like to present yourself like you'r wiser than the wider Nigerian masses! Let me remind you that the Libyans did not begin their struggle with the goal of overthroning Gaddafi, events turned events and Gaddafi became the focus of the struggle.

As this #OccupyNigeria struggle continue, attention will graudally turn from Fuel Subsidy to the more pressing issue of corruption, graft and transparency! GEJ's government might be sacrificed in all of these and personally I wouldn't blink an eye so long as we rid Nigeria of these critins who are intrinsically corrupt!
when u keep talkin like this, how wont you feel dull, someone is advocating a structured sensible approach to the matter on ground, lets assume the protest grow to the level of toppling the govt, who will you replace them with?
Like you i agree that corrupt persons should be procecuted, but unlike like u, i believe that in addition, the conditions that enable corruption to thrive should be removed,

There has been several plots by the past and present governments not to build new refineries so that they can continue to import fuel. How can we import what we already have. It is like a cafe who has enough coffee to make, but no coffee maker. The owner of the cafe goes shopping each day and each time he sees the coffee maker, he ignore it. what does he do eventually? they will go to his neighbours shop to make the coffee for a fee and then bring it back home to sell to his customers. Obviously he will sell at a higher price compared to if he has his own coffee maker in his coffee shop.

That is what we are seeing in our dear country where our leaders have tolled the path of the coffee make who refuses to buy his own coffee maker but prefers to make coffee for us abroad.
.
i salote, is it the job of the govt to build refineries?

@megastu @pain do we want to compare the objective of Libya to that of Nigeria. Libyans wanted Gadaffi out; we want fuel subsidy to be reinstated (2 different objectives). Do we want Jonathan out (remember we voted for him well I didn't) or do we want to tell PDP (a party without any mandate), its chieftains and party members that enough is enough. What happens if fuel subsidy is reinstated. Remember there was extreme poverty during fuel subsidy and if it is reinstated poverty will still never ceases. We should change the objectives of Occupy Nigeria from Fuel Subsidy to No to corruption, that a stringent law on corruption be passed, that EFCC or whatever commission be given autonomous power to prosecute all citizenry regardless of status and position, that the immunity clause be removed and that government begins to implement better economic policies to empower the people. Also remember that Nigerians have been calling for this protest for long because we are tired of the way our government treat us. We have to be passionate about this, we have to be determined about this. My fears are; can Nigerians stick to the end, are we prepare for this or are we going to chicken out when the soldiers in their battalions begin to roll out their tanks and the corrupt police begin to throw their tear gases or the Govt thugs begin to stab protesters with their knives. ARE WE READY FOR OCCUPY NIGERIA, DO WE KNOW WHAT IT IS GOING TO COST US, WE SHOULD ASK OURSELVES GENUINELY; IF YES WE MUST SAY NO TO CORRUPTION. PDP AND ITS COHORTS MUST GO
instead of adopting this sensible position, labour is attempting to mobilise people to fight for cheap fuel, it baffles me considerably, i tot labour is suppose to fight for the future of nigerians,
Labour should start by listing out the total renumerations for each political office holder and demand a law or constitiutional amendment to limit this, they should insist on jointly writing the bills, there are so many intelligent things they could be doing,
Instead we have this comedy half hour where pictures have to be taken really upclose to create an illusion of large crowds, its no longer funny, its actually becomming embarassing, apearantly the chief commedians have left the stage to smaller but more ignorant upstarts.

Mr DaLover,
I'm still waiting for you to translate what Alj Harem wrote below o! If you cannot translate your language o English, then you should simply keep mute and let those who care about the future of our great nation do their work without distractions from people like you who have no home.

Alj Harem,
Thanks for putting him in his place.
translation of my language to english is now the criteria that guages who cares for the nation? Well i wouldnt really say your line of reasoning is out of place, judging from majority of the post, i have seen on nairaland this period, funny thing is that when it comes to facts, figures and analysis you run for cover, critical questions that should be answered are left untouched and you join pretend nationalist like the resident boko haramist on this site to chase shadows,

If rioting for cheaper fuel tickles your fancy, please by all means go ahead, Please ensure u, the boko haramist and others on naira land join other youths on the streets,

My analysis on the matter is very simple,
If you acuse imf and world bank of trying to colonise nigeria with their free market policies, should someone call you a racist? I gues you would say no, now
if i accuse the key marketers, 80% of whom are from the SW of commiting economic crimes (to the tune on almost one third the national budget), do you think I should be called a tribalist.

How does it even make sence that people from the oil producing region of the country are not the at least controlling at least 50% of the downstream sectorhuh That another matter sha,

3 individuals or families have been identified as major marketers adenuga, tinubu and otedola? GEJ,s govt have said it connot procecute them for one reason or the other, they are not hidden, y on earth do you want the average niger delta man, who wasnt paying 65naira in the first palce to hit the streets so the marketters from SW can continue where they stopped?
I have been fighting againt the economic injustices being carried out directly or indirectly against the ND people since i started commenting on NL.

On the fuel subsidy issue, my clear stand is on govt deregulation, price increases happen to be a fall out of deregulation, Should govt be the one running the downstream sector? The clear answer is no, and why? Because it is not their primary responsibility, they are innefficient at doing it, even with minimal corruption, it is now worse when you mix in corruption.
Have you or your war mongers asked yourself why GEJ is makeing this unpopular move? Hope you know he doesnt need to remove subsidy to enrich himself to high heavens? To achieve that he just needs to continue borrowing money in nigerias name,
nigerians will of course be happy with cheap fuel, lagos marketters will be happy but ultimately u and i will have to pay,
Far back in primary school, we were thought that two wrongs dont make a right, govt has not eliminated corruption, so govt should hold on to the downstream sector and prevent people from setting up refineries, diversifying the economy, creating jobs etc etc,
For sure there will be hard times, but we need to quickly get to a place where we can start building up the middle class through creation of jobs, asking for freebies is not and should not be the priority, in fact i don tire for una, seems the sensible ones are not yet born

Labour should stop asking for cheap fuel, this amounts to playing to the galery, a strategy by the economic criminals and rent seekers to make the populace feel short term benefits are more rewarding than the ultimate goal of job and wealth creation.
labour should instead insist that the market be transperant, govt shold complete the deregulation process by selling off refineries immidiately, and desist from participating further in such business,
Check for duplication of functions in PPRA and DPR, if they exist, scap PPRA (as part of cost saving).
Ask serious questions on weather we need 2 houses of legislature? Insist on passing the 2012 budget with a reduced recurrent expenditure, ask serious questgions on security votes for governore, ask about funds for constitional projects for senators and HOR members, ask if we need 50 ministers and ministers of state, insist on sitting on a monitoring panel to monitor progress of key infrastructure projects, but if free fuel is all they can see, i just have to say sorry guys,
Oshomole at the lagos debate told his for labour comares how they should have probably for for subsidy on disel instead of fuel, because thats is what drives industry now, and creates jobs but they were short sighted, fighting a populist fight and gues were we are today

Apperantly a lot of people need their skulls to be OCCUPIED by some redasoning ability before venturing into something based on today and tomorrow meals,

People come here to talk when they are not made the slightest effort to grasp what the real issues are,
Several times, i have told people on this forum, understand a situation before commenting in public, but because of the nature of online forums, they feel they are at liberty to poor dumbness onto the screen.
If tomorrow FG arrest tinubu, adenuga and otedola for trying to run the country a ground, the same set of people will say see how GEJ hates the south west, take your protest to their houses, ask them how tghey spent the funds from round tripping, we from the niger deltgare not ever allowed to participate in the oil business, except those of us willing to be 'lackys, occupy otedolas boat parked near the american embassy then we can know how serious you are, until then this remains a joke

hey, my point is not on fasholas political future but on the fact that there simply is no free meal any where, somebody somewhere pays the price, what is the price we pay for government running the down stream sector,
Big govt = big corruption,
small govt = small corruption
how do u achieve small govt, govt gets of of peoples way, allow free enterprise and market forces to prevail, govt concentrates on policy and regulation, external affairs, and a few others,

Govt is big when they run your down stream, upstream, schools, hospitals, railways, roads, why is this logic so damn difficult to understand, o i remember, the non tribalistic marketers from the SW must be instigating you to feel govt has to supply you ur pms cheaply or die in droves,

For the last time what i am saying is that, the penduleun has swung the way of labour and the opposition now, what are they to do with it now, fight for free fuel or hold govt by the balls on reducing cost of governance

if it is to fight for cheap fuel which is not my birth right, count us ss out, you are with you marketers over there in lagos, please fight your own fight, if that is being a tribalist, then thank you very much

Apart from one check point on warri sapele road, i didnt see the scores of military and police personnel preventing people from protesting,

This commedy has now entered season 2 (fabrication of fanthom protesting crowds), just shows how low people will go to either continue enjoying what is definately not a right but a previlage or for marketers to continue exploiting the masses,

people come here and say all sorts of rubish, they want GEJ to achieve what presidents of countries far richer and advanced than nigeria have not even achieved,

we are all konw how countries like UK, USA and isreal have been battling fundamentalit terrorism for decades, with no end in sight but GEJ is expected to solve the nigerian one in months, if not weeks. He should arrest buhari and atiku because of what they said, arrest top nortgern .?politicians because they are keeping quiet, use intelligence agencies to infiltrate boko haram and paste the progress reports on newspapers so we can appreciate what security agents afre doing,

USA with all its sofistication and wealth cannot adequate police its borders with mexico, all sorts of smuggling take place, human, drugs etc, but under 2 years GEJ should have produced to top notch customs agency, sealed nigeria border with 4 neigbouring countries, and expect them to fully resist the spoils from the over 200% profit associated with smuggling of pms products.

from 1999 to 2010 Obj the hard man tortured us with regul.ar fuel scacity, he wasnt bold enuf to take the bold step GEJ has taken, yet we cant appreciate, with 200bn allocated before GEJ cmae to power we experienced regular fuel shortages, to keep thecountry wet with fuel GEJ found that it cost 1.3tln

i begin to wonder if where he from has any input into these unintelligent attcks on his person, especially from those in the SW, going tothe extent of insulting his race by calling him a drunking fisherman . Well enuf said about that,

I personnaly would scord GEJ 60%, mainly becuase he not moving fast enuf to get govt out of running businesses

Dalover, I am not "for" or "against" but the word on the street (UK at least and friends back in Nigeria) is that the FG does not want to make the sacrifice while our cost of governance is the highest in the world (each senator earns more than Obama and we have 109 senators).

They feel the FG wants to pass on the budget burden to the masses which will reduce the middle class to the poor class and the poor to be poorer still.

Though, GEJ's decision is necessary, people can't just help but feel that if they do not hang on to this, they have lost everything and its only the political class and cabals that will enjoy Nigeria.

I simply want you guys (Dalover, Point B, Beaf and co) to see it from the other side.

And one last thing, though you have not, please let's not tribalise the issue here. Over 95% of Nigerians can't be wrong. . . .
Jason123,
its not we dont realise that there is no waste and inefficdiency in running the present structure of govt as it is, but 2 wrongs dont make a right, waste from govt + waste from govt participation in downstream sector = very big waste,
This very big waste needs to be removed one way or the other, , now a hugh chunk has been removed by the partial deregulation of the downstream, (partial because the refineries have not been sold yet),
Now the question is, should labour be fighting for free/cheap fuel or for reduced govt expenditure?, its like saying give us free fuel and we will look the other way on your corruption,
I agree with you that we all need to tighten our belts, people will always follow the path of least resistance, the govt, executive and legislature will not want to reduce expenditure except we use this opportunity to put them under pressure, we should say, now that you have asked us to sacrifice, we will go on general strike, if you dont pass a budget that reduced the recurrent expenditue by say 60%,

The attitude is tantamount to bringing the house down on itself, cutting ur nose to spite ur face. It show a lack maturity from people who should be in opposition.
Democrasy works by application of pressure at the right time, demand that GEJ look at the recurrent expenditure of the executive, how can the legisture opperate a figure lees that what obtains now? can we pass laws that limit recurrent expenditure? Do we need/can we afford an upper and lower house of assembly? Can consituitional projects be scraped? Can security votes be scrapped? And a lot more questions, this are question i expect sharp opposition/labour to insist on now that fuel prices have increased, but we find them demanding for free fuel, and i ask when did it become a right to pay less than actual cost for anything?
You are asking people to go on the streets to fights for today and tomorrows meal, why not ask them to use the exact same enegy to fight for generations yet unborn? That is why i refered to the occupy nigeria circus show as a commedy, people who dont know left from right being urged to hit the streets so that condition from unlimikted corruption will thrive, the names or marketters have been released and guess what part of the country most of them are from? Guess where the main protesters are from? Do the math

OK, A BIG THANK YOU TO THE HAUSAS AND YORUBAS FOR EXISTING AND ALLOWING IGBOS TO TURN YOUR EXISTANCE INTO CASH,

Yorubas are much more advanced than most ethnic groups in Nigeria
Look at what this animal is saying, if this was an isolated case, I would have overlooked ti, but the fact that a good number of yorubas stffer from this superiority complex is what worries me,

This also explains why they are the ones leading the assult against GEJ, they find it hard to understand how a supposedly inferior person would be presiding over this country,

It also explains why they would prefer to isolate themselves in a superior party of UPN, AD, ACN, AG, the feeling of being advanced and superior forms the basis for their artitudes towards us inferior people,

@Triaophant
i know the NNPC has resorted to importing fuel, what i really need is now is whether govt sells crude to NNPC at $100/barrel, i heard they get 445,000 (445k barrel is the total capacity of local refinery put together in full operation.) barrel/daily for minimal cost.
They info seems to be one big secret and is hard to confirm from any reliable source for now.
I tried NNPC site, they av good info but i cant find this particular info.
sheyguy, i hope you are not suggesting that FG should give free crude to any refinery, public or private, the whold essence of deregulation is that the FG gets out of the way, allows private enterprises to run the business, hence they will source for crude in the open market, the FG needs to stand aside and concentrate on monitoring, ensuring compliance to tghe various rules and regulations,

The çoncept of blanket subsidy for all must be done away with,

Why do people keep saying Nigerians voted for GEJ. Who actually thinks GEJ won the election fair and square without rigging it.

I have to stop reading Nigerian papers because i just want to slap somebody after reading it.

Pretty much this guy has no plan for dealing with Boko Haram.
So at the last election, which canidate was the best choice for nigerian? Which party was the best party? We had ACN, APGA, CPC, Labour party etc, did you expect 9jan to vote for democratic party? We have to choose from the options availiable, we will rather choose a currupt party with a national spread than a currupt party that is tribally based, if your argument is that nairaland mugus party was not registered, then that is another matter,

velo, i am not, to answer ur question, but do not subject youjrself to crowd mentality, with regards to performance of gej, be specific, choose an area you want to critisize, what has been done so far? How was that area? How long do you estimate it will take to fix the area? Is he moving in the right direction? If not, what should he have done better or what can he do better? This is how i expect enlightened people to engage in constructive critisim of anyone leading their country, but when people line up to poor insults because of a statement threated in isolation out of a speach, you just to be ashmed that this is all we have to offer

Did Bokoharam start during GEJ's tenure?
mr kokoa, does it matter when BH started? What should matter is when it changed from a small religious organisation to a political tool,
today OPC is dormant, tomorrow someone or pple may reactivate it as a political tool to fight against the FG, i am sure you probable expect the FG to lock all the yoruba leaders in jail, without hard evidence, just arrest them because they are yoruba, itg baffles me how generality of people reason, no one has produced any hard evidence against northern elite, only that they are not castigating the militants, imagin that in front of a judge,
my lord, the case against buhari and the sultan of sokoto today it that they are amonst the northern elite keeping quiet againt boko haram, thereby indirectly supporting
bombings in the country, and commiting a crime invented in nairaland called quiet bombers,
Some of us need to step back, take a look at the situation and jusgt try to be smart,

it a good thing you admitted not reading new papers, hence you willl definately not be informed of any plans at all, you definately will not be aware of the legal cases against identified BH sponsors, the military encounters with members of the BH sect, the special security units setup to counter this new type of threat, the registration of mobile phones, the digital registration of drivers and vehicle licences, the linking of drivers and vehicle licences, and othe processes being put in place, please resume reading papers and be informed again,
