On a more serious note for you guys that stay abroad, patronize each other. it's very healthy for economic growth.
That sounds funny until you come to yanki, then you would realize how extremely painful that is. Some Akata's even do it to themselves.

EducationRe: The Nigerian Teacher/Tutor And The Cane by davidif: 12:54pm On Jul 28, 2008
@siena
You're confusing 2 seperate things here!
Corrective smacking because a child's been naughty?
Or corrective beating, because a child failed a test?

One thing's for certain - if a child does not take in lessons, and fails / does badly in school, beating does not make that child learn better, or faster.
It merely makes the child frightened to try.
There's a big difference between a child who doesn't excel in classwork, because he / she's lazy, and another child that does badly, because he / she just isn't cut out for the same work.

Not all children are academic types, and if that's the case, beating the child within an inch of his / her life will make absolutely no difference.
You can't beat education into a child's head, if they are incapable of learning.
A lot of great people today never saw the walls of a school, beyond primary education, but they still achieved something, made good of their lives.

Some children are dyslexic, have you considered that?
Do you think teachers in Nigeria can tell the difference?
Where does a teacher draw the line, between smacking a child, and beating them?
There is a big difference - I have seen children beaten, to the point the skin is broken / split.
And you reckon these children are keen to return to school the following day?

You mentioned respect, and that's a valid point.
Children should respect their teachers and parents / elders because they've been taught to do so, not because they've been beaten.
Having fear for their teachers is very different from having respect, again, please don't confuse the 2.

It's the teacher / tutor's duty to educate the children, and round off the respect part, which the children should have been taught at home, by their parents.
Respect should come from home, if a child is disrespectful, then they're products of their own upbringing.

As for Asians, how very different is their upbringing, in terms of their parents teaching them respect, from in the African society?

Sure, British and American kids can be rude, but how well has the beating Africa children served them?
Just because they appear not to be rude, does not mean they're not lacking in other areas, due to teacher-child trauma.
Disrespect is visual / perceptive, so we tend to focus more on these - one doesn't need special training to realise a child is rude.

A child that has suffered beatings at the hands of a bullying teacher / tutor may appear respectful, but can be mentally damaged, the signs of which may not be immediately apparent, maybe not till they even have their own children.

A mentally damaged child is more of an issue than a rude one, typically such young adults may be withdrawn, and unable to relate to authority in later life.
It's also not uncommon for a child to become "hardened" by beating, and just accept it as the inevitable - at this point, he / she is virtually immune to even the mildest form of correction.

As far as they see it, especially boys, if they misbehave / rebel, what's the most they'll get?
A beating. But, they've had all that, what else is there for them to fear?

Nothing.

I guess folk will decide how best they want their kids to be dealt with at school, they may condone them being beaten by their teachers.

As for myself, it isn't happening. No teacher is going to beat my kids!
It's my duty as a parent to teach my children respect, and take an interest in their school work.
If there are any early learning signs, it's also my duty to find it, and deal with it the best way I can.

And if I was a teacher, there's no way I'd lay the cane on someone else's child.
I'm there to educate, and if the child won't / can't receive, then there could be other issues, which are not for me to deal with.

That's what the parents are there for, and that's what children's reports are for - for the parents to know where their kids are at, in terms of academics.
Boy, oh boy i can't believe how westernized you are. I think you are one of those rich kids wo where pampered at home and was never touched. Infact , i am guessing you had a chaffeur (or driver as we called it) who came to pick you from school everyday of the week with a different car, then he drove you to your mansion surrounded by fences as high as the wall of Jericho.

Either way, i know some american teachers here who wish they could go back to the days of old where flogging was allowed because the kids of today are waaaaaaaay much difficult to handle.

@disguy
so with all the caning why are there so many rogues and cultism in universities or were those the kids that didn't get caned? lets stop deceiving ourselves, there are other forms of discipline not leaving teacher who have not been paid for three months to 'discipline' children.
That has more to do with economics and less of flogging.

Yes, i agree, there should definitely be a limit on how teachers flog but the reason why i can see from both sides is that i went to schools were they flog and were flogging was prohibited and there was a huge contrast in the level of indiscipline in both schools. There were kids misbehaving in class, making noise and just being a nuisance in class. Personally, i believe that students should only be flogged for misbehaving in class and not because they don't understand the academic content.
PoliticsDo You Believe In Free Healthcare For All Nigerians? by davidif(op): 12:14pm On Jul 28, 2008
There should be free healthcare for all nigerians especially in the rural areas, just like a lot of European countries do (especially the scandinavians and other northern europeans). Nigeria has one of the highest infant mortality rates in the world (those were supposed to be our future Bill Gates, Isaac Newton's, Albert Einstein).

Mozambique drastically cut there infant mortality rates by training high school graduates and nurses for 4 years to perform surgeries. This was a very innovative new program that the W.H.O marvelled at and recommended to other developing nations. http://www.pbs.org/wnet/wideangle/episodes/birth-of-a-surgeon/introduction/747/

In Nigeria, human beings are dying from absolutely curable diseases despite the fact that all it takes to even open a world class medical school is just $120 million dollars (20 mill. for the faculty and 100 mill. for the medical centre and facilities). Unfortunately, state govts are embezzling more than that a year, My friend almost died from malaria some years ago but thanks be to God that she is still alive. Sadly, not a lot of people are not as lucky as she is. So my question is how on earth should humans  be dying from malaria or tuberculosis or even contracting polio in the freakin' 21st century.

My fellow nigerians what is your take on this topic.
SportsRe: Siasia Picks 26 For Dream Team: No Mikel? by davidif: 12:09pm On Jul 28, 2008
@mr. olaolu
the sad reality of the matter is that athletes have always been misbehaving since they were being paid handsome salaries. Before the 60's, where football players where working part time (some were even working as chimney sweeps or doing construction work) because there wages were not enough, you might not have had of stories like this but this is the 21st century and mordern mgmt methods have to simply adapt. Of course, we would all love our athletes to be as good as choir boys and be humble model citizens but its not like that. The mordern day athlete (in every sport and not only football)  can be a prima-donna, greedy, spoilt and pampered but at the end of the day, we need them to perform on the field, that's what management is about. That's why Arsene Wenger studied psychology before coaching and that's why the premier league requires that all coaches should get a UEFA Pro License if they want to coach, because whether you like it or not, money changes people. Heck, John Terry almost beat up Avram Grant (they had to be seperated during training) before the Carling Cup final last year because the man did not reveal the starting line-up before the game. Would he have done that when he was just an 18 year old boy under Ranieri? i don't think so.

Another key aspect of coaching is recognizing that not all fingers are equal, John Terry is more important to Chelsea than Alex is or Fabregas is more important to chelsea than Denilson or Diaby. Even if this players misbehave by floundering team rules before a crucial encounter, as unfortunate as it sounds, team mgmt would still play them because they are very important to the success of the team. Ottmar Hitzfeld found out the wrong way last season when Martin Demichelis insulted him and he decided to seat him, you know what happened? yes, they lost at stuttgart who attacked through Demichelis vacated position and that almost cost them the bundesliga, you know what Hitzfeld did the next game? he played Demichelis and even apologized to him (can you imagine? angry angry) that for you is called management, throwing away your own ego and persuading your spoilt athletes to come together to win because whether you like it or not, the chairman or the shareholders of the club do not care about your feelings all they care is about winning because winning brings a lot of money to the club. Now there are some extreme cases were you have extremely divisive players that have to be kicked out like Eto'o at Barcelona, Roy Keane before world cup '02, Mido before AFCON but the other situations can be worked out. That's why i am saying that its not too late for siasia to throw his ego aside and bring in mikel. I remember when Capello dropped beckham from his squad because beckham simply signed a mega contract with another team. When madrid started loosing left and right, the man swallowed his pride and brought Beckham back and the man single handedly won la liga for them that year (of course Barca's legendary collapse that year also helped), now my good friend that is what management is about not treating millionaire adult athletes like primary school pupils.
SportsRe: Siasia Picks 26 For Dream Team: No Mikel? by davidif: 11:45am On Jul 28, 2008
@adamsy07
"WAS OKOCH A WORLD CLASS OR NOT"
Nope, i don't think so, being the greatest dribbler in the world does not make you a world class player it simply makes you an entertaining player. Agreed the man had insane talent and was really good player but at the end of the day he was not a complete player, as a no. 10 he didn't have the vision of Zidane, the goal scoring touch of Rivaldo,  and the mental toughness or the ability to carry his teammates on his back and will them to win like Roberto Baggio. If you ask me what player i want as my central midfielder when the chips are down and time is running out; i would pick the great Rivaldo. The game was never over with that man on the pitch, beside the fact that he had a devastating left foot, the man was capable of magic, pure magic. I would give you an instance, go and watch Brazil vs. Belgium in the '02 World cup. Belgium had clearly dominated that game and despite missing a lot of chances, they still clearly looked like a threat to score, then Rivaldo from nowhere did what i had never seen in my life, scoring a marvellous goal against the run of play (go check it on youtube).
Another instance, was the last day of the season and Valencia and Barcelona were fighting for 4th place to qualify for the champs league, the game was tied at the 90th minute (which was all valencia needed) then out of nowhere Rivaldo scored from what we nigerians refer to as "shangalo"; the best overhead kick i had ever seen like it was a beach soccer game and that goal ended the match. If there was one word i could use for the man, it was clutch (ability to deliever in tight situations). The man simply knew how to get it done, now that's world class.
Okocha on the other hand did not even have the stamina to play a full 90 minutes match earlier in his career and that's why they used to bring in siasia for him, don't get me wrong, as a nigerian, i love both of these players any day any time. But i am trying to be objective here, there is a difference between a circus freak and a world class player. A world class player, especially a midfielder is supposed to be complete in all aspects of the game. Heck, Okocha couldn't score from a free-kick until the twilight of his career at Bolton and C. Ronaldo can do it consistently at 23. The great Zizou could dribble but he dribbled only when he only had to. He dribbled to create space and seperation from defenders or he did it to raise the morale of the troops and most importantly, he did it when he was in a tight spot and there was nobody to pass the ball to, that right there is maturity and that's what Sir Alex is trying to teach C. Ronaldo instead of unnecessary showboating. I want a midfielder who is always on the lookout for the open man to thread through that crucial through pass like Fabregas. If you understand this concept, only then would you understand why Real madrid is willing to sell Robinho to get Cristiano Ronaldo  (who is nowhere as naturally talented as Robinho), why? because C. Ronaldo  is a complete player compared to Robinho and of course, he scores a lot more goals. Robinho can dribble 5 defenders but the question mark on his game is that his game isn't mature and he doesn't score a lot of goals. C. Ronaldo is a winger who scored 42 goals in 49 games or less, while Robinho who is a striker scored just 11 goals. Enough said.

EducationRe: Asian Education: Better Than Western Education? by davidif(op): 11:47am On Jul 27, 2008
The only reason why Asian schools might not be ranked higher than the Harvard's and the MIT's is because they might not have billions of dollars to spend on doing abstract research on the Black hole or the Kuiper's belt but make no mistake about it, the best students in the MIT's, the Harvard's, Berkeley's and the Caltech's, at least 81% of them are asian in some estimates. As for those of you who think they did rather study in naija or Ghana if they can't get a visa to yanki or England, you are just wasting your time because Asian universities are waaaaaaaaaaaaay better than the ones in Ghana and at home so throw away your ignorance and try to broaden your horizon.

Here in the USA, Asian students dominate hands down from the Caltech's to the MIT's. In MIT, iI even heard that Americans are only 18% of the graduate students. This guys seem to be breathtaking, in fact, the ones that come to the USA are the ones that couldn't get into the elite colleges back home like Indian Institute of Technology or Beijing University.

They have an amazing school system (especially Singapore) so i wonder why is it that Nigerian students go to Ghana, south Africa, England, or some 3rd or 4th tier school in USA for college rather than study in Asia (some of their universities speak English) where they don't pay quite as much. Also, for those that didn't know, Israeli engineers are probably the best in the world, yes, even better than the Japanese.

My fellow Naija people, what do you think?

Yep, keep decieving yourself, when Nigeria kids become as useless as the british kids or the american kids then you would understand. Go to an American high school and see how extremely disrespectful kids are, then you will know what i am talking about.
Asians, on the other hand, know how to discipline there students and it works wonders for them. Morale of the story is another man's cake is another man's poison, realizing this is wisdom. Its not the right thing to imitate other people's livestyles or you would pay for it.

ANYWAY I DON'T BLAME YOU ATALL,
There is a difference between a good or a decent player and a world class player. All i am saying is that let's not throw the name world class around any how. Fernando Torres is world class, Cristiano Ronaldo is world class, Francesc Fabregas is world class, Wayne Rooney is NOT world class. Siasia was not even a starter in the national team, it was Okocha who was the starter. My goodness what is wrong with this USELESS EXTREMELY STUPID COUNTRY. I read of other countries in asia rapidly developing and industrializing within 40, 30, 20 years (and they have no viable natural resources) and here we are creating more states. That means that we have more governors, deputy governors, senators, house of representatives, LGA chairman, permanent secetary, and ministers to pay, thereby reducing Nigeria's GNP past 60%. Wonderful

Why not just merge the country into 6 different regions, that means there is less govs, dep. govs et. al to pay and of course less godfathers to bribe, then we can focus on creating world class free public education for our kids and a free health care system for all our citizens like most developed countries have. But Nigeria being Nigeria, this will never happen, they would just keep on creating more and more new states and new ministries like the ministry of special duties  grin  grin angry.
