SportsNigeria's U17 Eaglets Won't Defend Title. by davidif(op):
WITH the Golden Eaglets crashing out of the Africa Under-17 Championship slated for Algeria next year, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) will likely announce the sack of the team's handler, Alphonsus Dike, today in Abuja.

For the first time in many years, the Eaglets, who won the African cadet championship last year in Togo before going ahead to conquer the rest of the world in Korea, failed to book a ticket to the African qualifiers no thanks to a 3-2 aggregate loss to their Beninoise counterparts.

Consequently, they will not be on hand to defend the title their predecessors won at the previous edition. The uninspiring Eaglets had managed to win the first leg 2-0 in Port Harcourt two weeks ago before a ruthless Young Squirrels of Benin sent them packing on Sunday with a 3-0 humiliating defeat in Cotonou.

Speaking with The Guardian yesterday shortly on arrival from Cotonou, Chairman of the NFF's Technical Committee, Taiwo Ojunjobi, said that an emergency meeting of the committee would hold today in Abuja to review the Eaglets match in Cotonou, among other matters affecting the football house.

"I just returned from Cotonou and will be heading to Abuja for an emergency meeting of the technical committee, which will hold tomorrow (today)," he said. "I don't have much to say at the moment on the Golden Eaglets' failure until we have deliberated on the issue. All I can say now is that we were beaten 3-0 in Cotonou."

Sunday's mockery of the Eaglets by the Young Squirrels of Benin came just as the Nigerian Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the 2009 FIFA Under-17 World Cup is moving round media houses on familiarisation tour, canvassing support for the team in its bid to retain the world title next year. Nigeria will be hosting the FIFA Under-17 championship in four cities next year.

It was learnt yesterday that the technical committee of the NFF was putting the blame of the defeat on coach Dike for his alleged poor technical input to the game, especially the first leg in Port Harcourt, where the Eaglets fumbled in front of goal on several occasions. President of the NFF, Sani Lulu, his first vice, Amanze Uchegbulam, and board member, Princess Bola Jegede, were among those that watched the Eaglets being disgraced by the Young Squirrels of Benin on Sunday.

An angry Uchegbulam was said to have declared shortly after the Eaglets crashed out that coach Dike's days in the Eaglets were numbered, saying that the NFF gave the handlers all the support they needed to overcome their Beninoise counterparts in the qualifiers.

The last time Nigeria suffered such a humiliating exit on African soil was in 2005, when the Eaglets, under the leadership of coach Godwin Izilien, failed to book a ticket in Banjul, The Gambia, to the World Under-17 championship in Peru.

The Eaglets won the Under-17 African Championship title in Togo last year under now late coach Yemi Tela before conquering the world in Seoul, South Korea.

Politics100 People Feared Killed As Oil War Enters Second Day by davidif(op): 5:47pm On Sep 16, 2008
Operation Hurricane Barbarossa, an oil war declared by the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, entered its second day on Monday with the death toll put at 100 by Reuters.

Reuters, which attributed the figure to two security sources, also reported that Armoured Personnel Carriers and more troops had been deployed in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Reuters, a global news agency with a strong presence in Nigeria however, did not give a breakdown of the figure. MEND and the military authorities have since the “war” began on Sunday claimed inflicting heavy casaulties on one another.

The Associated Press, which described the oil war as the heaviest between MEND and troops of the Joint Task Force, otherwise known as operation Restore Peace in the Niger Delta, so far, quoted its correspondent as saying that Port Harcourt was “on edge.”

The AP correspondent said, “I drove into Port Harcourt from the neighbouring state of Imo. It’s a distance of about an hour and 30 minutes by road and I counted no less than 20 checkpoints manned by heavily-armed police and troops.

“Within the city of Port Harcourt itself, there are sandbags protecting government installations. There are troops on pick-up trucks with machine guns.

There are APCs deployed at strategic parts of the city. People are moving around, but there’s some kind of tense situation. It’s a city on edge.”

MEND on Monday attacked the Alakiri Flow Station, a major oil platform operated by the Shell Petroleum Development Company.

A community guard was killed and four others injured in the incident. The attack forced the SPDC to withdraw more of its workers from the Niger Delta.

MEND had, in an e-mail to THE PUNCH, said it burnt down the flow station around 12.15am on Monday.

It also claimed in the statement by its Spokesman, Mr. Jomo Gbomo, that scores of oil workers and soldiers, who violated its order to vacate facility, perished inside it (facility).

The statement reads in part, “Heavily armed fighters from the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta stormed the facility and have razed it to the ground as promised.

“Resistance was non-existent as the soldiers fled their dug-in positions leaving behind their colleagues and the workers inside the facility to their fate. The foolhardy workers and soldiers who did not heed our warning perished inside the station. The facility was still burning when we left.”

MEND also warned that any oil vessel that violated its advice not to sail into the Niger Delta would be blown up.

The Director of Public Relations, Defence Headquarters Brig.-Gen. Emeka Onwamaegbu, dismissed MEND’s claim that it killed some soldiers.

He said, “There is absolutely no truth in the claim by MEND. MEND is employing propaganda to achieve its aims.

“There is an encounter quite alright between our men and MEND. We have just two of our men that were injured. I hope the MEND or whoever is behind all these will embrace dialogue. We have no reason not to disclose casualties if we have any.”

The JTF Spokesman, Lt. Col. Sagir Musa, who spoke with one of our correspondents said the militants in 10 speedboats attacked a military post located at the facility.

He claimed that during the gun duel that lasted for about an hour, some of the militants probably died while detonating dynamites.

Musa said, “It is greatly feared that the flow station might have caught fire due to crossfire during the encounter.

“No casualty was recorded on the side of our forces and the situation is being closely monitored and is under control. The battle lasted for one hour, with the militants using dynamite and bombs, but the attack was repelled.‘”

Musa wondered how soldiers would be killed without their corpses being found anywhere.

He said, “The claim that soldiers were killed is just a wild propaganda. The so-called militants should know that the time is up. They are advised to come to terms with reality as the status quo will be reversed for the good of all.”

The Public Affairs Adviser of the SPDC, Mr. Tony Okonedo, confirmed the killing of the guard and the wounding of four others during the attack.

Okonedo said, “We confirm that our Alakiri flow station was attacked by unknown gunmen, and regrettably, a community guard was killed in the incident. Four other people also sustained injury during the attack and are being treated in our facility in Port Harcourt.

“As a precautionary measure, we have down-manned facilities in some of the field locations. That is, we have reduced the number of men in such facilities.

“The SPDC is aware of the difficulty the security situation places on staff and continues to monitor developments.”

He, however, refused to say how much production was shut down as a result of the attack.

Okonedo, who denied that the facility was torched, said, ”We cannot talk about production shut down because we do not give out our production figures. But I can tell you that the flow station was not raised.”

Also on Monday, MEND claimed in another e-mail statement that it had killed more than 17 soldiers since its repraisal attack on the JTF began on Saturday.

Another of its spokespersons, Cynthia Whyte, said most of the soldiers were shot dead while engaging in illegal oil bunkering in the Niger Delta.

The statement reads in part, “On behalf of the larger coalition of the heroic combatants of the MEND, we wish to declare the ongoing success of operation Hurricane Barbarossa which began an hour after midnight of September 14, 2008, leaving in its trail about 17 to 24 dead soldiers of Northern Nigeria stock, many of whom are engaged in illegal oil bunkering across the creeks of the Niger Delta.

“This operation will continue and will remain undeterred. Our strategic objective will be to question the supposed might of the armed forces of the Nigerian state especially bandit units of the JTF who believe that they occupy our lands, rape our women, attack fishermen and render our lands desolate. They will fail.”

MEND also said that it would not surrender to the “violent approach” by the Rivers State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, and vowed to bring him to his knees through serial attacks on strategic locations.

It said, “We wish to remind the Supreme Court-appointed Governor of Rivers State, Mr. Amaechi, that this will not be over in a while. He chose the path of force and violence and that is what he will get.

“To the bandit soldiers of the Nigerian state, we will meet in the creeks. Welcome to the new edition of The Rumble in the Creeks.”

Fighting started on Saturday in Elom Tombia, Rivers State, when the suspected hideout of a militant leader, Mr. Farah Dagogo, was pounded by troops during an aerial and maritime onslaught.

In a reprisal action, MEND attacked the Soku Gas Plant and Chevron facility at Kula, where it said many soldiers sent as reinforcement were ambushed, killed and dispossessed of their weapons.

It also claimed that its men blew up several points on a major crude trunk pipeline at Nembe Creek.

The JTF has since denied the claim.

Meanwhile, the Association of Licensed Customs Agents of Nigeria on Monday said that activities of militants in the Niger Delta had slowed down the work of its members.

The Zonal Eastern Ports Chairman of the association, Mr Emenike Nwokeoji, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Port Harcourt, that people were scared to go and bring many cargo vessels on the sea into the wharf.

Nwokeoji said that the militants obstructed the activities of his members in several ways, adding that it was expensive to provide security for the vessels.

Man, its a really dicey situation because Nigerian take marriage VERY SERIOUSLY than westerners. Divorce is a  NO NO talkless of having a child from another marriage. My parents, in fact, everybody that i know would be livid if i married someone who was divorced and already had a child even if they were Nigerian, but if the guy truly loves you then he should stand up for you, trust me, they might like you when they meet you. Either way, my sister i wish you all the best in your life and God Bless, i really hope everything works out for you guys.

HealthRe: Nigerians And Dirty Habits: Can We Ever Change? by davidif: 8:04pm On Sep 09, 2008
First of all, the whole of Nigeria is not as dirty as you describe. Just some parts of Lagos, and Aba.

People throwing things out of their vehicles: yes, that's bad, but it's not the reason we have floods in Lagos. We have floods in Lagos because it rains a lot. That's all there is to it. The gutters are not clogged because people throw waste in their gutters; the gutters are clogged because there's no place for the water to flow into. Much of Lagos is around sea level and the gutters don't reach everywhere. Many roads don't have gutters at all.

Question: Why don't Nigerians always use waste bins. Answer: which waste bins?

Why do Nigerians often pee in the bushes instead of peeing in toilets? Answer: which toilets? When was the last time you saw a public toilet in Oshodi or by the side of any road in Lagos? What do you do when you have to pee and there's no toilet close by? Question: Where do white people pee when they are camping? Answer: In the bushes, just like Lagosians. If you have a problem with that, go and construct public toilets in Oshodi.

Nigerians and their habit of complaining instead of taking concrete steps: can we ever change?
@seun
O ri e pe jo. God Bless you.

Treatment: Yar’Adua’s wife insists on German hospital — Agency

By Semiu Okanlawon, John Alechenu, Waheed Bakare, Adelani Adepegba and Kayode Ketefe

The refusal of the First Lady, Hajiya Turai Yar‘Adua, to allow a Saudia Arabian hospital make use of her kidney may have been responsible for the delay in the return of ailing President Umaru Yar‘Adua.

The indication was given by the online news agency, saharareporters, which reported on Tuesday that rather than subject herself to the use of her kidney in a crucial transplant to save her husband, the First Lady was said to have demanded that she and Yar’Adua be flown to Germany where her husband had hitherto received medical attention.

The development came just as Lagos lawyer, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, urged Nigerians to pray for quick recovery of the President.

According to the online news agency, the President was, on arrival in Saudi Arabia, said to have been implored to seek the advice of top nephrologists working in a Jeddah-based Saudi government-owned hospital.

The agency reported, ”After running a battery of tests, the team of doctors concluded that the kidney meant for the replacement was likely to suffer tissue rejection from him.

“They advised that tests be conducted on his close relatives to find alternative donors. His wife and daughter were tested, and his wife proved compatible, according to our sources. She was, however, unwilling to donate an organ in Saudi Arabia. She instead opted for it to be done in Germany. Her condition would mean that Yar’Adua would spend a prolonged period of time in Germany to recuperate.”

This, according to the news agency, informed the intervention of the President‘s brother, identified as Major Audu Yar’Adua, who was allegedly flown to Jeddah to undergo organ compatibility test.

The younger Yar‘Adua was said to have been flown to Saudi Arabia with a Gulfstream G-V aircraft to undergo the test on Monday.

A Consultant Nephrologist at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu, Ogun State, Dr. Charles Alebiosu, who spoke with one of our correspondents on the phone, said it was possible for a woman to donate a kidney to a man.

Alebiosu, who maintained that kidney had nothing to do with gender, however, stressed the importance of meeting all the necessary medical criteria before the donor‘s kidney could be used for the recipient.

He said, ”Why not? A woman can donate to a man. It has nothing to do with gender. In the first and only kidney transplant done at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, this year, a young lady donated her kidney to her brother.

“Once the donor is above 18 years and all medical criteria in terms of donor selection are fulfilled, there is no problem. The donor must be medically fit and the two kidneys must be working perfectly well. Both the donor and recipient will be well and alive and able to live their normal life after the transplant.”

Meanwhile, the Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has said that Nigerians deserved to know the President’s true medical condition.

It said that correct information about the president‘s health would dispel the rumours about his condition.

The President-General of the organisation, Dr. Dozie Ikedife, who said this while addressing journalists in Enugu, observed that it was normal for human beings to fall ill and be treated.

The Igbo leader discountenanced arguments that Yar‘Adua should resign because he was sick.

He said, ”Life and death is not a thing to be played with and the government and Presidency owe us the fact, so that the speculations will be less. If you don‘t fill the gap with facts, then speculations will run riot. I don‘t know other nations that seem to enjoy half-truths more than perhaps we Nigerians”

Urging Nigerians to pray for the president, Fawehinmi, who is receiving medical treatment in a London hospital for lung cancer, lamented that Yar‘Adua‘s state of health had made it impossible for him to discharge his official functions.

He added that despite the official secrecy about the state of his health, it was obvious that all was not well with him.

Fawehinmi stated, ”For close to two weeks, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Alhaji Umaru Yar‘Adua, has not been governing the country, as it is now clear that he has been receiving medical treatment including surgery in Saudi Arabia for an undisclosed ailment.

”This is contrary to the official announcement that he went on lesser pilgrimage.

”The fact is Alhaji Umaru Yar‘Adua is sick and he is unable to govern the country because of his illness.

”Nevertheless, he deserves the prayers of all Nigerians because he is our president and, therefore, I appeal to all Nigerians of all religious persuasion to pray for his survival and

I just don't like wannabe's, i'm simply talking about being original and not copying everything usher or Justin timberlake does, afterall, you don't see them immitating there culture meanwhile we do whatever it takes to immitate theres even if it means stealing from your friends or loved ones just to even buy the outfit they wear on TV. To be honest with you, there is no difference between his video and a yanki video, but unfortunately, naija people can't see that.

Another point that i'm trying to drive across is that because of our unique enviroment that is different from the western world we can be more creative in song writing and making music video. Whatever happened to making funny videos like Trybesmen's "plenty nonsense" (was that the title?) video or just something that didn't have a guy behaving like a wussy because of a girl? This is another reason why R&B artists are not as well respected here in yanki, even amongst females because they are seen as too soft (some do). If you go to the clubs and a rapper like fiddy or TI is around more girls would flock to him than Akon, usher, or T-pain. Only R-kelly has the same star power as the Jay-Z's and "the games" or this world.
PoliticsRe: Bauchi State Bans Public Co-ed Schools by davidif: 1:14am On Aug 30, 2008
I am not completely familiar with Nigerian constitution, and I know there is always a disparity between theory and practice.

However, as far as I know federal law supersedes state law. Is this not a breach of the fundamental right to freedom of association in the first instance?   Secondly is this ruling binding on Christian schools as well as Federal schools?

Where does it all end if you are in the north, segregated universities and compulsory hijab and Arabic/Islamic studies are now a possibility?
Thank you jare my brother, this people don't know that the constitution is the supreme law of the land and if these sharia states want to secede from the union by establishing laws contrary to the law of the land then let them, the fed govt. should simply cut off funding from them. In other words, no budget allocation

Every state has the right to create bye laws as long as they do not contradict the federal laws. If Bauchi State decides to ban mixed schools then so be it. A lots of boys & girls schools are exist in the south so is not a new thing.

In the USA different state have different laws, while some state approved of death penalty & same sex marriage others don’t.
@MC Usman
do you know what you are talking about? because it seems that you do not have a clue. This is the reason why the US fought a civil war: state's rights over the fed govts. and guess who won. In case, you didn't know, the law of the fed govt. supercedes the law of any state and if this guys don't want to stay in the federation then they should be kicked out.

Nonsense, why can't they be creative? are there no bigger or more creative stories to sing on that is going on in naija? Also, what is the akata girl doing in the video? i guess its just to give it a "janded" feel to it. Everything we must copy, absolute rubbish. By the way, what's the meaning of "Banky W."

The Fed. govt. knew this and gave Rivers State money for the project but Odilli embezzled it. Also, it would cost a lot lot more for them (Shell and Nigeria) to build a gas refinery so they just flare it, which is just fine and convinient for them.
