Oba as a term is for sub-kings of subsections who are appendages to the paramount ruler of the conglomerated subsection.

Before Oduduwa, during Oduduwa, before Oranmiyan and during Oranmiyan to after both of them, we have had Obas in Ife heading different sections who became sub-kings under Oduduwa and are still sub-kings under the Ooni.

Before Oduduwa: Obaluru, Obalesun, Obalale, Obalase, Obalejugbe, Obarese and the list goes on but the section of each king's section is the suffix after Oba.

During & after Oduduwa: Obalufe, Obalaaye, Obajio, Obawinrin, Obadio and the list goes on.

The only obstacle to Benin expansion was Oyo empire which Benin Kingdom never dared until Oyo empire collapsed as a result of the defeat in Ilorin. That is what you were told... Learn more, the Benin Kingdom is one of the 5 earliest dynasties and kingdoms in west Africa, and perhaps the most formidable at its peak. No other tribe from this geographical space called Naija is part of these 5 earliest, so it's not logical that such an organised state will be ruled by an outsider... It's not, cos they already had their own established monarchy with strong armies.

An established Kingdoms has soldiers, well fortified cities and towns, and an established monarchy,and only heirs can become the Oba of Benin. So it makes sense that a son of a King from an established Kingdom,go colonise a smaller town, with no coordinated monarchy at the time...and lord over them.
