Christianity Etc › Re: Freethinkers How Do You Manage Living In A Country That Believes In Superstition by DeepSight(m): 3:34pm On Jan 25, 2022
LordReed:
Our forebears in the wilderness didn't have the luxury of contemplating "suppositional reality", they had to determine if those waving grasses was a predator or not, that was the reality they need to determine and if they determined wrong they were going to be some beast's lunch. My attitude is not much different from them, I need to live and so must determine the things that are real for my continued existence. The luxury of contemplating "suppositional reality" only comes when I have assured my continued existence (for awhile at least).
While I cannot for all practical purposes find any quarrel with what you say, with those persons for whom the search for the meaning of life is a foundational object of the said life itself, such questions cannot be avoided. Sadly for me, I fall into this melancholy and probably Sisyphean category.

Okay. Apologies, I havent even read the details. My question is really about abortion in such circumstances.

Now here is a perfect case for all them Catholics and anti-abortionists to answer:
Two grounds here -

1. It was rape
2. She is 11 years old

Do you recommend that such a pregnancy must be retained on account of the "sanctity of life?"

LordReed:
For what is necessary for living that determination is absolutely essential.
There is a phrase I sometimes use and it is "our suppositional reality" - it basically refers to our presumed reality. I use it to distinguish between what we must necessarily suppose or presume to be real in order to get on with our daily lives (this is what I believe you refer to) as opposed to whatever may in fact be real, simulated or hallucinated.

Because beyond Cogito ergo sum, I am not sure there is much a human can know to be real.

As a skeptic I focus on that which is real and has sufficient evidence to act on.
Life is way more complex than this approach takes on board.
Even reaching a determination of what is "real" is a tricky affair.

It does, and in ten years they will be begging for democracy.

Military rule does not guarantee good governance. It didn't in Burkina Faso.

What guarantees good governance is people holding people to account at all levels, and taking an active part in the political process, and also being realistic sometimes, not just voting, going home and expecting goodies to fall from heaven

This is a most crucial point which seems to be lost on Wirinet. Corruption is terrible, but the corruption under a system of absolute power can never be quantified.

Its laughable when people say the richest men in the world are Gates, Bezos, Musk, etc. If you know anything about what despots amass all of those people would look like clowns. I remember what was revealed about Hosni Mubarak - Not a single one of these so called billionaires could light a candle to what that one had amassed.

But all the infrastructures we identify with our nation was build under military rule. Lagos Internation airport, National Arts Theatre, Third mainland Bridge, the four refineries, etc. Compare with national infrastrural assets build by civilians.

NEVER.

Believe me kwarapshin is far greater under civilian government. The total revenue received by the IBB government in 8 years is less than the total revenue received by the Jonathan government in one year. Meanwhile we can point to some projects by IBB. (Remember IBB fought 2 wars). Name one infrastructural project by Jonathan. The total revenue received by Abacha in his 6 odd years is probably only 3 month's revenue by this Buhari government. Remember crude prices fell to $8 under abacha and never rose above $16, all these while under sanctions.
I dont need to tell you that the money of yesteryears has different value from the money of today. And I am not talking about exchange rate evolution only. I mean dollar to dollar. $10 yesterday is not $10 today even in the United States. Many variables factor in, inflation being the main one, but by no means the only one. Aside from this I am shocked that you say we cannot name one infrastructural project under GEJ. Thats an extremist assessment and all extremist assessments are false ab initio. The truth is that the GEJ gwament had several projects to be proud of, and several legacies which will be spoken of for decades to come (not least the democratic disposition which permitted the handover to an opposition party - you know most would die-fighting). Sadly the truth is also that GEJ was a weak leader, did not understand presidential authority, was corrupt, and worse, did not keep those under him on a leash - such that they were able to go to town with reckless abandon. The most infamous being the Diezani/ Kola Aluko cabal. He also failed security-wise - even though again, in truth, Buhari's spectacular failure in the same regard has somewhat reduced the extent to which we can point to GEJ alone on that matter.

PS: Please do not scandalize me by being one of those who praise IBB for anything. If you have in mind the third mainland bridge, not only was that ongoing, but the fact is that the man not only institutionalized kwarapshin in this kwantri, he also set us back a great deal with his fraudulent transition programme. This is aside from being a serial treasonable felon.

Even though I don't support a coup, sometimes a coup might be the only option for securing the territorial integrity of a country. It happened in Egypt. When Mohammed Morsi was bringing in religion into politics and allowing Muslim Brotherhood into government, the military leaders led by El Sis overthrew his government.

The military is usually a unifying organization, they won't tolerate a civilian government that would dismember the country or introduce policies that would disunity the country.

Even in the former Soviet Union, the military attempted a coup against Boris Yeltsin from breaking up tje union. It failed because the people supported Yelsin.

What the Burkinabe (and Nigerian) soldiers are complaining about is not even tactics. It's lack of basic equipment to fight the militants or Islamic terrorists. They are ordered to the war front without adequate arms, without enough ammunitions and without adequate supplies. Apart from that no adequate intelligence and then they have to deal with sabotage. It's like a suicide mission. And they cannot resign. Many fine officers have died needlessly.
Military coups are now simply outdated.

Yes there was corruption but the level was much less than under civilian. The corruption was only perpetuated by the military ruler and his cronies. Even the governor's could not steal from the coffers without the knowledge of the head of state.

Under civilian government corruption was free for all. From governors to legislators to even judges. From ministers to service chiefs to civil servants.
Well the problem is that one cant really say because owing to the nature of Military Gwaments, there is a lack of information. The secrecy is far greater and as such you dont even know what slides underneath the rug. The open nature of civilian gwaments may be part of the reason you are able to see, and thus think, that they are more kwarapt. All I can accede to is that there are many more participants in a civilian gwament, not necessarily that the kwarapshin is greater.

If not for corruption within the militaries of West African countries, Boko Haram would not have been able to seed, not to talk of grow. Afterall most West African states had death with Islamic terrorists in the past under military regimes. Civilian governments seem incapacitated due to corruption.
Military Governments, sorry gwaments, were also corrupt. I am not sure this is a "civilian government" thing so much as a simple problem of political will.

Nigeria too is heading in the same direction. The rank and file will one day become frustrated with the incessant killings of junior soldiers on the battle front due to lack of adequate arms and ammunitions, despite trillions of naira in defense budget year in year out. Added to the lack of prompt payment of meagre salaries and allowances that is paid late. Meanwhile the senior officers with political connections are living big.

I pray the Buhari administration sees the danger and quickly address the moral and equipment of our military fast before it degenerates into a crisis.
The great pity is that this very fact was one of the prime grounds on which the GEJ administration was shoved.

You can equally say all humans predate nations.

Somewhere right now, one mumu Nigerian is busy selling one idiot as candidate for next year's election.

I don't know if Jesus or Muhammad or Lucifer (whichever one you believe in) needs to come down themselves to tell some Nigerians that it can never get better than it is.

Nigeria can not and will never work.

No matter who wins the presidential election come next year, the following things will never happen

1. You won't get Justice in court without knowing someone
2. You won't work in the same office with Atiku, Saraki or Osinbajo's children
3. You won't be given admission to study your dream course without knowing someone even if you meet the points
4. You won't get at least twenty hours of light in your house if your neighborhood is not surrounded by Porsche people
5. Dollar will never come down to N350
6. Boko Haram and banditry will not end. Instead, a new insurgent group will emerge
7. Anchor borrowers scheme will never reach the real farmers in the villages of Nigeria
8. You will never be a big name in your career if you don't live the so called big cities.
9. And many other Nigerian problems

This country has been damaged beyond repair. The foundation of this country is so faulty. From the amalgamation, to the coup and counter coups. The only way out for us now is to break up this contraption. Those campaigning for Tinubu, Atiku, etc are only doing so because they will eat from the national cake once their candidates win. You need to live in Abuja to see what these guys and their families do with the resources of this country.

if you don't know someone that knows someone that knows one of the leading candidates, don't campaign or vote for any one of them, no matter what the person is promising. Because by doing so, you're using your hands to choose your oppressors. Leave their friends and families to vote for them.

Because whether we like it or not, the country is gone.
If others were so pessimistic about their countries, do you think you would have any successful countries in the world today?
Nations have been in this race for thousands of years. We are just starting, comparatively.
Its a marathon, which will last generations - not a sprint.
