Nigeria is known for 'hero' worship. I am not surprised anyone would elevate such a cold blooded sadistic, malefic murderer to the level of JFK. Nigerians have no idea the magnitude of agony that was averted due to his much deserved death. Good riddance to bad rubbish! Now if we can just remove that abomination from our currency. . .
I don't think he was that bad but I just don't know why some Nigerians compare him to JFK especially after his contribution to the issue of OIC and Nigeria. He was the only military leader dead or alive that is in our currency. Who even introduced him to our N20 note? There are many northerners that can fill his gap anyway.

Many Nigerians regard him as Nigeria's JFK. Why? Especially when he was the first head of state that introduced Nigeria into the OIC when he knew too well that Nigeria is not a muslim country?

CultureRe: Yorubas Are The Most Educated Tribe In Nigeria by DeepZone: 8:51pm On Aug 31, 2008
There is no clear cut line on this as Yorubas and ibos have a thin margin in academics. But, i think the yorubas will dominate in business related fields while the ibos are mostly for physical sciences and Engineering. You cannot prove that Ibos and Yorubas are the most educated in Nigeria like somebody stated above because their populations are not the same with that of Ijaws, Efiks, Itsekiri's etc. I use to think that Yorubas are the most educated until Ibime gave me an insight with proof in one thread I cannot remember again. Is that not why we are here. I think it's more advantageous if you are not voted as the most educated so your youths can work harder to go on top. May be we Yorubas are still living in the past glory thinking the ibos are mostly uneducated traders without putting into consideration that most of those traders are educated and the uneducated ones among them are like the area boys in yorubaland and almajiris in the north. If I have an option, I'D take an uneducated trader anyday over the two latter ones.

An area boy is just what he is , a tout. An uneducated ibo trader that is supposed to be on the same class somehow by virtue of his profession, comes into money easily and y'all know what money can do to you, it'll boost your ego and that's why you see some of them in lexus and expensive clothings but the alaye in them will still be glaring even though they are trying so hard to cover it up because they are rich.

Again, I'll prefer an area boy over an almajiri any time any day because alayes work their living.

Nigerian opens Cultural House in Brazil
From Andrew Iro Okungbowa, Salvador, Brazil

AMIDST pomp and celebration, Nigeria made history in faraway Brazil with the formal commissioning of the Nigerian Cultural House at the weekend, in Perlourinho, by the Minister of Culture, Tourism and National Orientation, Prince Adetokunbo Kayode.

https://odili.net/news/source/2008/aug/31/guardian/images/1.jpg

The newly-built Nigerian House in Perlourinho, Bahia, Brazil (scheduled to be opened by President Musa Yar'Adua) was commissioned at the weekend by the Minister of Culture, Tourism and National Orientation, Prince Adetokunbo Kayode. His absence heightened speculation that he may have indeed been hospitalised in Saudi Arabia.

advertisement

Kayode told the joyous crowd that Nigeria has finally taken its rightful place in world cultures, stressing that the opening of the house will not only promote Nigerian culture, but also further strengthen ties between Nigeria and Brazil.

This sentiment was re-echoed by the Governor of Bahia State, Mr. Jacques Wagner, when he expressed the hope that relations between both countries would receive a boost as demonstrated at the occasion.

The event, which was well attended by senior Brazilian government officials and business community, which included the representative of the Mayor of Salvador, saw a colourful display of Nigeria culture as the National Troupe of Nigeria not only won the hearts of the audience with its powerful and artistic renditions, but turned the atmosphere into a carnival with dancing and singing.

Former Vice Chancellor of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Professor Wande Abimbola, chanted the Ogun praise in a most enchanting and evocative manner.

Kayode assured the people of the readiness of the government of Nigeria to continue to work with the Brazilian authority in harnessing and promoting the healthy cultural relations between the two countries. He declared that a closer tie between the two countries is very dear to Nigeria because the country regards Brazil as a 'Sister country.'

The Minister also noted that the Nigerian Housealso has an equivalent in Nigeria, referring to the Brazil Quarter in Lagos which, according to him, was the exclusive residential area for returnees from Brazil after the abolition of the slave trade.

The minister said that the quarter would someday be declared a World Heritage Site, just like the Perlourinho of Brazil.

Nigeria's presence in Salvador, Wagner said, would further strengthen the Africanness and overriding Africa influence in Salvador, as Salvador is regarded as Africa city in Brazil.

With this house, Nigeria has become the third Africa country to have a cultural house in Salvador. Angola and Benin Republic are the two others.

Anxiety lingers over Yar’Adua
Written by Leon Usigbe, Abuja
Sunday, August 31, 2008
AS anxiety lingers over President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, the man he defeated in the 2007 general elections, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), wants Vice President Goodluck Jonathan to assume full executive powers so that the nation can move forward in the absence of the ailing number one citizen.

Buhari, the candidate of the All Nigerian Peoples Party, ANPP, in the 2007 polls, made his position known on the president, who was said to be recuperating in King Fahd Hospital, Saudi Arabia, after successfully undergoing renal transplant surgery, just as many members of the National Assembly declined comments on the president’s ill-health on the grounds that they were not aware of the situation.

The only member of the House of Representatives who spoke on the matter, Hon. Leo Ogor, said whereas he was not in the position to confirm Yar’Adua’s health condition, there was nothing unusual in the president taking ill as he is a human being.

Uncertainty persisted in the Presidency on the president’s health yesterday. Some sources inside the nation’s seat of power said Yar’Adua’s situation was stable and that he was esponding to treatment after the surgery. But many top government officials preferred to keep mum.

According to Buhari’s close associate and director-general of the presidential campaign of the ANPP, Alhaji Sule Hamman, who spoke on telephone with Sunday Vanguard, yesterday, in Abuja, while the Buhari camp sympathised with Yar’Adua over his poor health and wished him quick recovery, it was important for the vice president to take over the responsibility of running the country fully in line with the prescription of the constitution.

“Well, I will like to say that we commiserate with the president on the unfortunate condition that he is in and we wish him successful surgery”, Hamman stated.

Chiding the Presidency for concealing Yar’Adua’s health status, he said, “But, we obviously condemn in unequivocal terms the irresponsible manner in which the Presidency managed the situation by denying the people of Nigeria information and confusing the people with false stories and reports about the health condition of the president. This should not be a political matter. It is irresponsible politics to play with the health of the leader of the country. So, we regard this as unfortunate”.

He explained that the Buhari group hoped that the PDP will accept the constitutional provision whereby the vice president of the federation will exercise full responsibility of leadership in the absence of the president. “So, we hope this will be complied with so that in his absence, the vice president will provide full leadership and take full executive responsibility so that the country can move on with the leadership that is constitutionally designated”, he said.

Also reacting, Ogor, representing Isoko Federal Constituency of Delta State, told Sunday Vanguard that even though he could not confirm the report, there was nothing unusual in the president taking ill as he was a human being.

According to him, “We are all human beings and we can fall sick at any given time. If the story is true, we should even be happy that the whole thing went well and he is recuperating. What we need to do is to pray for him and to wish him well. Nobody has control over health. It is something that only God controls”.

On the initial denial of the Presidency of the poor state of Yar’Adua’s health, he noted that the officials probably did not have accurate information at the time they went public with the denial.

“Probably as at then, the person who was giving the information was not abreast of the situation. He had to go back and re-confirm the story but I really don’t see any big deal about it because we don’t know when the operation took place and we cannot confirm the story. Even as I speak to you now, I really don’t know the true position”, the lawmaker said.

He added that it would be too early to speculate over the ability of the president to carry out his constitutional functions as such the decision rested squarely with him.

The former chairman of the House Committee on Inter Governmental Affairs went on: “The man has not told anybody that he cannot perform his functions that he is supposed to be performing constitutionally and that responsibility is purely in line with the constitution.

“The responsibility of saying he does not want to run the affairs of the state is left to him. Nobody can speak on that because you cannot say that if somebody goes through an operation and that would be the end of the man, the answer is no. Anybody can face this kind of predicament. People go through operation and even come out stronger.

“The fact remains that, at this moment, what we should be doing as a nation is to pray for the president. From my own position, I have not been able to confirm it but if it is true and the operation is successful, then it calls for jubilation and we should be excited over it. We should pray to God so that he can recover and go back to his job”.

Many other members of the House including the chairman of the House Committee on Rules and Business, Rep, Ita Enang, Rep. CID Maduabum (PDP Anambra), Farouk Lawan (PDP Kano), Ahmed Salik (PDP Kano) and Doris Uboh (PDP Delta) declined comments on the president’s health on the grounds that they were not aware of the situation.

Panic in the North and Aso Rock over Yar’Adua’s health condition - How Yar’Adua dribbled aides to make Saudi trip
Idowu Samuel, Abuja
Sunday, August 31, 2008
President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua has caused panic in the Presidential Villa and indeed among his arch supporters following news report that he was hospitalised in an hospital in Saudi Arabia for an undisclosed ailment.

The anxiety among officials within the Presidential Villa, Sunday Tribune learnt, was not unconnected with their inability to track information on the true health situation of the President since he never told any one of them that he was traveling out to seek medical attention.

There had been hues over the manner Yar'Adua travelled out of Nigeria some days ago on the pretext that he was Saudi Arabia-bound for the lesser hajj whereas some of his close aides had suspected his trip on consideration that the issue of lesser hajj was shrouded in secrecy.

Indication that all was not well within the Presidential Villa emerged when most of the useful aides of the President were tactically left behind to the extent that only a few among them knew that he would be travelling out, talk more to know that he would be doing so on health grounds.

Investigations by Sunday Tribune revealed that Yar'Adua sold a dummy to his aides about his trip abroad by reducing the number of aides in his entourage in order to shield his real mission for travelling to Saudi Arabia.

A top Presidency source hinted that he only went with his wife, Turai, his top security aides and members of his immediate family and those of his wife who he could trust.

The essence of doing so, as checks revealed, was to moderate the inflow of information from his present base in Saudi Arabia to Nigeria, since his close aides were known to have been spilling information on his health condition to curious information seekers back home anytime he was away.

The presidential Adviser to Yar'Adua on Communications, Mr. Olusegun Adeniyi, had earlier responded on his trip to Saudi, debunking speculations that the president went for medical attention where he travelled to as according to him, Yar'Adua was hale and hearty.

The inability of the President to attend to state functions has been stalling the process of governance, since most of the government functions had been halted pending his return to the country.

Last week, the House of Representatives had to postpone a meeting between it and the newly appointed service Chiefs on the issue of gun running levelled against Niger Dock Company, in line with the resolution of the House.

The new service chiefs had pleaded for time to keep abreast of the situations in their respective offices in respect of the information being sought by the House and more importantly on the need for them to be sworn in by the President.

During his first and the last Presidential media chat, Yar'Adua had had cause to open up on his state of health which had been a subject of grave concern to most Nigerians and the international community that he had cancer problems.

According to him, the problem had persisted because the doctors attending to him had been administering wrong doses on him until he sought expert medical solution in a German hospital which he said he had been familiar with.

Yar'Adua told the bewildered nation that the issue of his health condition was in the hands of Allah as he expressed disappointment that some Nigerians had been sniggering about his state of health to the extent that some had speculated that he would die in the process.

Before he became president, the electorate in Nigeria had expressed misgivings about the condition of Yar'Adua's health, accusing his predecessor, former President Olusegun Obasanjo of forcing a visibly ill presidential aspirant on Nigeria.

The then president, during a Retreat for all elected Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Officials in early May 2007, had rained curses on those talking ill of the health of Yar'Adua, averring that anyone who wished Yar'Adua evil on health condition would get evil.

McCain picks Palin for VP
Aug. 29: Republican presidential candidate John McCain's has chosen Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate , NBC News has learned.
Today show

WASHINGTON - Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain has chosen Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate, campaign officials told NBC News on Friday.

She would be the first woman to serve on a Republican presidential ticket. The pro-life Palin would also be the first Alaskan ever to appear on a national ticket.

Palin, 44, was elected Alaska's first woman governor in 2006. The state’s voters had grown weary of career politician Gov. Frank Murkowski, whom she defeated in the GOP primary.

“I've been blessed with the right timing here,” Palin said before the election. “There's no doubt that Alaskans right now are dealing in an atmosphere of distrust of government and industry.”

Palin's selection was a stunning surprise, as McCain passed over many other better-known prospects, some of whom had been the subject of intense speculation for weeks or months.

She is a generation younger than Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware, who is Barack Obama's running mate on the Democratic ticket.

She is three years Obama's junior, as well, and McCain has made much in recent weeks of Obama's relative lack of experience in foreign policy and defense matters.

On Aug. 1, Palin scored a major victory when the Alaska legislature passed a bill that authorizes her administration to award a license to TransCanada Alaska to build a 1,715-mile natural gas pipeline from Prudhoe Bay on Alaska’s North Slope to a hub in Canada.

The pipeline would be the largest construction project in the history of North America. If completed as hoped within ten years, it would ship 4.5 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day. The United States imported about 10 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day in 2007.

Under investigation for firing
But Palin’s seemingly bright future was clouded in late July when the state legislature voted to hire an independent investigator to find out whether she tried to have a state official fire her ex-brother-in-law from his job as a state trooper.

The allegation was made by former Department of Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan, whom Palin fired in mid-July.

“It is a governor’s prerogative, a right, to fill that cabinet with members whom she or he believes will do best for the people whom we are serving,” Palin told CNBC’s Larry Kudlow in an interview on Aug. 1. “So I look forward to any kind of investigation or questions being asked because I’ve got nothing to hide.”

Palin also reacted to the indictment of Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens by calling it “very dismaying.” She added, “Hopefully though, this won’t be a distraction and get people’s minds off what has to be done in the grand scheme of things.”

As for the prospect of her being vice president, Palin told Kudlow that she could not answer the question of whether she wanted the job “until somebody answers for me what is it exactly that the VP does every day. I’m used to being very productive and working real hard in an administration. We want to make sure that that VP slot would be a fruitful type of position, especially for Alaskans and for the things that we’re trying to accomplish up here….”

Palin is married to Todd Palin, a lifelong Alaskan who is a production operator on the North Slope and a four-time champion of the Iron Dog, which is described as “the world's longest snow-machine race.”

Mother of five
They have five children. Their son, Track, enlisted in the US. Army on Sept. 11, 2007.

Palin gave birth to their fifth child, Trig, last April. The baby boy has Down syndrome, a genetic abnormality that impedes a child's intellectual and physical development.

"When we first heard, it was kind of confusing," Palin said, according to an account in the Anchorage Daily News. She called the news "very, very challenging."

But she added in a note, imagining what God would say to her family, "Children are the most precious and promising ingredient in this mixed-up world you live in down there on Earth. Trig is no different, except he has one extra chromosome."

Palin made a name for herself in Alaska politics by serving as mayor of Wasilla City for six years and going on to run unsuccessfully for the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor in 2002.

After her unsuccessful run, Palin received an appointment to the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, where she ended up serving a role in an ethics probe into Republican Party Chairman Randy Reudrich, who was questioned about conflicts of interest with the oil industry.

The investigation ultimately forced Ruedrich to resign from the commission.

Palin's role in the investigation left her a party outsider, but she was able to win the 2006 Republican gubernatorial primary against Murkowski, going on to win the 2006 general election by seven points over her Democratic opponent.

During one debate before the primary, Palin said she was in favor of capital punishment in especially heinous cases such as the murder of a child. "My goodness, hang 'em up, yeah,” she said.

Born in Idaho, Palin moved to Alaska with her parents in 1964, when they went there to teach school.

She received a degree in communications and journalism from the University of Idaho in 1987.

N1.5 trillion missing in NNPC account –Speaker
Posted To The Web: Monday, August 25, 2008 - From GODWIN TSA AND ADESINA AYEKOTI, Abuja

The annual conference of the Nigerian Bar Association [NBA] opened in Abuja on Monday with a startling revelation by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Dimeji Bankole, that a whooping N1.5 trillion generated as revenue from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation [NNPC] in the last 10 years has not been remitted into the Federal Account Allocation Committee [FAC].

Bankole who was speaking at the opening ceremony of the conference vowed that nothing would stop the report of the probe panel on the Independent Power Project from being presented to the public.

The speaker made the disclosure as the former Chief Justice of Nigeria [CJN], Justice Alfa Belgore, expressed displeasure over indiscriminate removal of state chief judges and incessant election petitions in the country.

Bankole, who said the fraud was unearthed in the course of the on-going investigation of the corporation, disclosed that the Lower House was coming out with a law that would regulate the way and manner government revenue was being spent in compliance with the principle of transparency and accountability of the present administration.

Speaking on the crisis in the Niger Delta states, Bankole wondered why in spite of the huge sums of money accruable to the states from the Federation Account, the region was underdeveloped.
He, accordingly, charged members of the state assemblies in the South-South region to probe their governors and ask questions on how their moneys were being spent.

The speaker further noted that revenue accruable to a particular state in the Niger Delta region was more than that shared by the 19 northern states from the Federation Account.

The South-South, according to him, “is, therefore, in the fore-front of both economic and political gains and have no reasons whatsoever to complain about underdevelopment.”
President Umaru Musa Yar’ Adua, in his speech on the occasion, restated his administration’s commitment to translate the ideals of the constitution into practical benefits for Nigerians through positive actions founded on sustainable policies.

Speaking through the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Mike Aondoakaa [SAN], President Yar’ Adua said his administration would continue to protect the constitution, uphold the rule of law, and ensure the participation of all sections of the polity in the governance process.

He announced that “today, Nigeria has one of the most credible legal systems in the world, characterized by a judiciary which has demonstrated its capacity for independence, as envisaged by the constitution. My administration shall continue to give the judiciary the necessary support it needs to continue to function in an independent, impartial and courageous manner.”
Earlier, Justice Belgore who condemned the way and manner state governors were impeached in the last dispensation called on the National Assembly to clear the controversy on what constituted an impeachable offence.

Thousands of lawyers in the country have assembled in Abuja for the annual conference of the Nigerian Bar Association [NBA], which opens in the Federal Capital Territory.
The conference is expected to produce new officers who will pilot the affairs of the national body for the next two years.
The conference is also to brainstorm on current issues bordering the nation’s judiciary and the way forward.

If they understand the teachings of Jesus Christ very well, they should know that it's not a persons clothings that will put him right with God. Sure He doesnt wnat guys in saggy pants and du-rags either.
There is a big difference between the synoptic gospels and letters written by followers of Jesus. If we go by the quotation above, many people the church accepts are not even qualified to be there because the phrase, "expensive cloths" and ornaments nailed it. I'm not against decent dressing but I think it's grossly inappropriate to walk somebody you don't know out of God's house because he or she doesn't look like you. When Paul was preaching in towns and cities, he never turned anybody back from his crusades because they adorned expensive clothes or what not.
Christianity EtcRe: Nigerian Churches And Dress Code by DeepZone(op): 4:28am On Aug 29, 2008
I don't think he was referring to clothing.
What exactly was He refering to? i guess He meant that believers and unbelievers alike that wish to come to Him irrespective of who they are, how they are and so on are welcomed.

Do you think that the church is right if they turn a prostitute who decided to attend a service one sunday morning from a brothel because she felt an emptiness and a need to connect with God for the first time in her life?

Is it not right to accept them and preach to them about it than treat them like they are outcasts? Do we have outcasts in christianity?
Christianity EtcNigerian Churches And Dress Code by DeepZone(op): 2:57am On Aug 29, 2008
Nigerian churches especially the Roman catholic church has this habit of disallowing visitors that are not properly dressed into their church. Many women are embarrassed daily in these churches because part of their boobs are showing or their dress is too short. Some will even stop you if you are wearing pants.

Question:

Are these churches allowed by God to do these things when Christ clearly said " come to me as you are"? Is it Christlike to turn around a soul that has a thirst for accepting Christ over what he/she is wearing? Jesus also asked us not to judge and that the outward is not what God is looking at,rather He's more interested in what's inside of you. What if the person decide not to accept Christ again over that inhuman treatment?

If someone is NOT marriage material, the best thing to change them is life and time. Most people sort out their ways by the time they reach the age that all their friends and exs are getting married and they are slowly becoming outnumbered.
Is it proper to conclude that someone is not a marriage material by merely observing him/her and what he/she says?

@Deepzone, am a bit disappointed at your post regarding the northerners. In the past you have posted brilliant comment, well who knows what went wrong.

Isnt it funny that the northerners are exposing these cases, we all know that there are more curropt leaders in the south south but no complaints because the people are simply scared, it is called intimidation. With all Sincerity, and anyone who has gone to Bauchi would testify, Bauchi state has more and better (state governement) infastructure(roads) than Bayelsa, Edo(esp Benin) state. You now begin to ask what do the southern governors do with the allocated money from federal government. Even if the Federal government has failed south south which i agree completely, what about the people of the land ie their own elites (the governors, chiefs, kings and commisioners). There is no doubt that these people are the richest leaders in Nigeria. Anyways it doesnt only apply to south south, even my people self in the south have issues
Have you considered the fact that the protracted military dictatorship by Northern Nigeria may be the cause?
IslamRe: Islam And Changing Times? by DeepZone(op): 10:26pm On Aug 28, 2008

Thank God you said Islamic Countries, not ISLAM. Even if Saudi does it, inasmuch as it is not what Islam says, they are not part of Islam and cannot be smuggled into Islam.
We don't even know what to believe again. Why fragment islam like this? Which one holds the absolute truth, the Turkish/western moslims, the eastern muslims or the west African muslims because it seems their tenets are totally different?
