My wife and I got married in 2012 and I have learnt and had several experiences within those years of being married to my amazing wife and I thought to share a few things that could be of a great help to young and intending couples and since all truths are parallel this could also be of help to even older couples.

5 MAJOR REASONS WHY MARRIAGES FAIL WITHIN THE FIRST 5 YEARS


1.Wrong choice : A major reason why marriages fail in the first five years is wrong choice. The Bible says in Psalms 11:3, ...... version that "If the foundation is faulty even the righteous is helpless". The bitter truth is that there are some people who have no business getting married to each other in the first place but for different reasons, they go ahead and get married. They see the signals clearly yet they ignore those signals and believe that they can 'rough' it. A classical example is a hot tempered man marrying a lady with an equally hot temper. I believe this is an obviously wrong choice as such a union will hardly work out except one of the two parties or both of them decide to make a significant change in that area of weakness within the first five years of marriage. There are several examples of wrong marital choices but the one I sited above is one out of several.

2. Unrealistic expectations and fantasies : I have had countless conversations with intending couples and even young adults along these lines and I marvel at the kind of unrealistic expectations and fantasies some of them have where marriage is concerned. There are people who believe that once they get married, they will never do their own laundry again, they will never sweep again, they will never do dishes ever again because their partner will be on ground to take care of all of that for them. Some people's idea about a husband is that man who serves breakfast in bed and says "Yes" to every single one of their requests so such people get into marriage and have a rude culture shock because they then see that things are not exactly the way they expected and fantasized them to be. As some and most of these unrealistic expectations go unmet, it brings them to a place of complete dissatisfaction and eventually they get frustrated enough to leave the marriage.

3.Sexual dissatisfaction : Sexual dissatisfaction is a major reason why marriages fail in the first five years especially when the husband and the wife refuse to talk about it. Husband and wife must communicate their sexual needs and desires to each other and find a way around it. A lot of couples shy away from having conversations about sexual matters and pretend that everything is fine. This then becomes the very point of contention that eventually pushes them outside of the marriage as they begin to cheat on their spouses and seek for sexual satisfaction elsewhere which consequently ruins the marriage.

4. Complicated In-laws : The issue of extended family members aka "the in-laws" is one of the most sensitive issues in marriage and is to be handled with care and a high level of wisdom. When it comes to this, women are the ones who are mostly victims especially due to differences that arise between the mother of the husband aka the mother-in-law and the wife but there are also times when the man is a victim. What makes the difference is that men always find a way to adapt and adjust so that peace can reign and keep their wives happy. Every man must learn to protect his wife from his own family and every woman must also learn to protect her husband from her own family so as to maintain a healthy balance and also the respect the in-laws have for the husband or for the wife. There is actually no specific way to handle in-law issues, every issue must be handled as they come with the wisdom of God and sound counsel from mentors and spiritual leaders. I am also of the opinion that most in-laws are not as bad as they seem if only one can pray to God for the wisdom to manage them , demonstrate a high level of patience and seek for wise counsel from older couples who are doing well in that area.

5. Unwillingness to change: Anyone who remains stubborn and unwilling to change and learn will never have a marriage in the next 5 years. Some people say things like 'if you want to marry me, you must accept me for who I am' and the question l always ask is 'who are you?'. "Would you marry you? Nobody will accept you for who you are for 5 years and that means you must be willing to upgrade and update your behavior and character at every point in time. If you haven't changed and evolved from who you were when you got married to your spouse, then you are a 'selfish' person. Even softwares need to be updated and upgraded, how much more human beings. Everyone must always strive to be a better version of themselves. Let your partner see the progress you have made, let them see that what use to get you angry in the first or second year of marriage doesn't get you angry again - that is what is called Growth. You must be willing to bid stubbornness goodbye and embrace change. I remember when I got married to my wife, she would always ask that I take a shower every night but I just didn't see any sense in that because I took my bath in the morning. When I saw that it was really important to her, I saw the need to change and right now, it has almost become a part of my everyday life. You must be willing to make some changes and be willing to learn if you really love your spouse and if your marriage means more than the world to you. Also the tricky thing about stubbornness is that it breeds unforgiveness which is a major threat to any marriage because the husband and the wife must possess a kind of heart that forgive easily with the help of the Holy Spirit if they both want to secure their marriage.
