@vigasimple I am an expert on the Nigerian Economy though. The Nigerian government took up an IMF policy early in the Obasanjo first administration to remove all subsidy from refined petroleum to allow for a free market to exist in all areas of the economy. All subsidy has been removed from telephony, almost all subsidy has been removed from electricity. It's not just the WTO wants all members to stop subsidizing anything, but if government is subsidizing products private companies cannot venture into that business and be successful. My people, we cannot continue living in a Fantasy. Price of crude oil cannot rise from $12/barrel to $60/barrel and we want to continue saying N20 per litre. It doesn't work in the real world. We both understand agriculture, so lets use that as an example. See Garri for instance. What has happened to Garri? The UK and China are now exporting cassava from Nigeria. Demand has increased per Kg of cassava by more than 200% and it reflects instantly on the price of Garri in the market. Why should fuel be different? Is it because we're a major producer of petroleum? But we are also THE major producer of Cassava worldwide. Is it because fuel is a very essential commodity? Well, isn't Garri? If government goes on to buy cassava at the market rate, build processing plants and start selling Garri at a subsidized rate, they will run the local farmers out of business, then scarcity will come in, then black market with explosive prices. If the government decides to subsidize the products the farmers produce too, the farmers will then begin to compromise quality because either way, they are getting bought out. But that is not the main problem. If cassava in the international market goes for $2/kg and government in Nigeria is selling already processed Garri in Nigeria at $1/kg, what stops me as a smart business man from buying garri in Nigeria and selling it in Togo at $3/kg? Do you know what that will cause? Loss in terms of the subsidy going to Togo and also less product in the market again leading to scarcity, black market and even adulteration of the product: you will see people mixing garri with the grinded chaff of maize just to cash in on the situation. My fellow Nigerian, abeg make we consider things before we begin proffer solutions. Look at all the countries leaving communism and socialism to capitalism. They are not mad. Please. There has been massive progress in Nigeria in the last 8 years, whether we admit it or not and there is going to be more progress if only we are willing to handle things with maturity. How much is $500 million that Nigeria wants to save that it will now sacrifice its development for short term benefits. For God sake Nigeria makes about $200 billion yearly so we don't need this company to come and help us save $500 million |
Mifegyne, Mifeprex, Mifeprestone (RU-486) or any other progesterone inhibitor. An unwanted pregnancy is far better than an unwanted child. Especially as I'm beginning to suspect you may be HIV positive. Considering the fact that you have unprotected sex! We don't want another HIV baby. |
Why don't you learn from guys. If a girl is so undesirable to us that we can turn her down, there is on earth that will make us want to be alone with her. NOTHING! On the other hand this guy is a potential rapist. Let him know that if any such thing happens again even not to you; if you hear any such thing from any other girl sef, you'll bring your parents in. Can you just imagine that vagabond? When guys like me are working hard, spending weeks to please women, one guy just wants to effortlessly rape. |
We can have a simultaneous world party. Lagos-New York-London-Beijing. Wherever works for you. If Samsung can do it for their D500 launch, Nairaland can do it. |
My dearest brothers I think I have said it before that that george bush is not worth all these insults. Look at all the insults that have been directed at bush himself. He has not flinched one day. Is it when you start insulting each other that he will now change his policies? |
Please donzman, let's drop it cos I really really do not like Indians, it's just that they work so hard. |
I'm done with this topic. I can feel a malignant tumor growing on the left frontal lobe of my brain already. |
Hi, I.m planning an event with first Bank and I'm presenting my proposal next week. It's a national event that will cost N4.8m and bring in revenue of about the same amount. Are you willing to work with me on this? My problem right now is that I do not have enough finances to settle my insideman that is going to ensure that I my proposal gets due approval. |
Well, at least you're putting in some effort at learning maths. I really should give you some credit. |
Come to think of it, do Indians come to Nigeria to look for jobs? The truth is that these Indians come to Nigeria to start up their own business. It is when Nigerian companies such as Globacom see how well these Indians are performing in their own business that they offer them jobs. I am definitely not going to India to look for a job, if I go to India and start an innovative business, I will hire people based on what they can deliver to my firm. If it Nigerians or Europeans that best fit the executive positions in my company, I will hire them then give the other jobs to the Indians. Job openings including those for drivers and cleaners will definitely go to the locals. And if the Indian government tries to impose Indians on my company as executives, I will close down the company and several Indians I already hire in other positions will lose their jobs. Don't you see that if the Indian government imposes its citizens on me to be employed in top positions in my company, they will not put in their best to work because they got the job not by merit but prejudice. Abeg, I will close down my company and move to Vietnam. |
@queen2 & candylips I kid you gals not! |
I didn't think you would reply. I thought you were the Nigerian deportee that died in transit from Spain. You can feed me? You that cannot even show yourself in the open? And why do you always concentrate on the bad? You didn't ask of those working two jobs. You asked of unemployment rate. You didn't ask for those earning Maximum Wage, you asked for unemployment rate. You will definitely think negatively because your brain has a large minus sign attached to it. Bloody deportee-to-be. Don't come and start working for minimum wage. You're in Libya desecrating the environment. @topic we should try to patronise the companies that bear some of this new tax burden, and avoid those companies that pass on the whole burden to the consumer. Definitely, Gala by UAC has to go and definitely Mr. Biggs has to go with it. We have to start letting these companies know that if they don't do us well, we won't do them well. Can you imagine Gala of N40 becoming N50 because of N2 tax?! |
Auwal, you really seem like a nice guy and a very polite one for that matter, how did you buy into this whole UHE bullshit? By the way, being Hausa doesn't make you muslim and being muslim doesn't make you Hausa. So what happens to the nonmuslim Hausas that'll be trapped in North and what happens to the nonhausa muslims that would be trapped in the South? Should they all just be eliminated? |
When people don't know the reason for the price hike, they begin to suggest all sorts of solutions. The recent increase in the price of petroleum products was not facilitated in order to create revenue for the government, it was done in order to inch closer to a free market and zero subsidy. |
The tongue ring for girls is not just a fashion statement. There is some sexual value related to it. Any guy who's ever gotten head from a chick with a tongue ring should testify about what the stud does. |
@Afam abeg curse anybody wey curse you O! There cannot be any attempt to monopolise insults in this forum. Me, I don tire for Bush matter. Why should an American be complaining about Bush. The kain names wey dey commot from yankee these days dey tire me. Bush, Bird, Rice. Abi is there a hidden message somewhere within it all. Bush bird chop rice? Abeg make we tackle topics outside George Bush. @all there is no wisdom that is more dangerous than ignorance. Ignorance is the most dangerous weapon the devil has ever created. |
Well, the effort to thwart the commonwealth games is not something that'll be too arduous. Most foreigners don't even know that expatriates are being kidnapped in the NigerDelta and not the whole of Nigeria. By the time I kidnap one whitey from Abuja and send the picture to CNN I-Report and those scottish reporters, government eye go neat. Hosting international games is a business venture. Nigeria is the only country that makes 10% of what it invests in hosting sporting events. |

God Bless Dangote!! Anybody that is against the sale of that defunct refinery is in support of importation of refined fuels. Don't you know that by 2010, we're not only planning to be independent of refining petroleum products, we're actually heading towards exporting petroleum products in lieu of crude oil. |
You did not see where I said people should pay VAT where it is due abi? I know the importance of VAT. What I don't know is whether you know the importance of common sense. I said divide minimum wage of N7,500 by 30 days that will give you N250 which converts to about $2. So where do you get your own less than $1 per capita income in Nigeria? Bloody ignoramus. Na you dey earn less than $1 annually. You, in fact, I don't know what to call you. |
So una dey wait? Well sha. Where Lucky Igbinedion? |
Yes O! Let's see what you gat |
v1 Things ain't been the same since you went away, everything I did to hurt you I never shoulda been that way. 'n' I know I took your love for granted whatever's in ma head, why couldn't I understand. Said I know I make mistakes I chase away a love I can't replace. ch. Baby, baby, baby, I can't live without you lady, lady, lady my whole life is all about you so come back that's like a verse in one of my unrecorded songs. Maybe you could just sing it out very loud, then you'd simply whisper "copyright denex 2007" |
I don't think you can import clothes. One of my neighbours has been to China twice. If you live around the Lekki area of Lagos, you may want to talk to her. |

@initiator athletes from british colonies can be compelled to the commonwealth games, but they cannot compel fans to travel all the way from Australia, England, jamaica and India. The only non-athlete visitors that will have a convenient trip to nigeria are Ghanaians because of the proximity and option of road transport. Ah. No country should make the mistake of boycotting the Olympic games O! It will just put China's name in the history books as the only country to win all the olympic gold medals at one competition. |
Well, I'll just keep making sure I work hard in my business and make sure it grows so I can employ jobless Nigerians (and Indians. lol) and strive to reach a status whereby I can export and earn foreign exchange. I'll also pay my taxes. Generally, people don't realise how much better they can make Nigeria just by being a positive, hardworking, decent citizen. |
I believe that Abuja is far ahead of Glasgow. However, I am against Abuja hosting this commonwealth games. I'm even against Nigeria being referred to as "COMMONWEALTH". More like colony. Abeg enough of this colonial mentality. Instead of them even begging us to host the games, were the ones fighting to host it. Abeg enough is enough. Let England host its own commonwealth. I reject it, and will thwart any effort to host any such games. God punish queen elizabeth and british imperialism. |
@romeo your brain is made up of wool. Na so you love world bank/IMF links wey you no gree post one? Why did you post a 2004/2005 page called finfacts. So if world bank has not compiled a list nations' per capita incomes, should I go and manufacture the link? I told you I can take a horse to the river but I can't force you to drink. Gba! |
Hmmm, individuals wielding machine guns for their own personal safety in Nigeria? In Abuja? Well, I really don't think Nigeria should host the commonwealth games. The basic reason is that we are surrounded by non-commonwealth countries. Therefore few people will come to watch the games from abroad so we will get minimal foreign exchange. We cannot afford to spend 250million in the near future, only to recoup 12million. I am not in support of that kind of colonial reasoning. People don't host games for glory sake. People host games to make money from foreign visitors. Germany made more than $12billion from hosting the world cup. Which commonwealth spectators are we expecting? Ghanaians? |
There is a sickness in this world and that sickness is a religous ignorance that leads christians to believe Israel is the headquarters or home of the christian nation and the muslims think likewise so they must either support or defy it. Israelis are mainly jews and they hate christians for all the prosecution they underwent from the Church, they have muslims for the ongoing crises. So you people should stop looking at this problem with religious bias. Try to look at the Israelis as Buddhists and the Palestinians as Hindus and then you might be able to see it is simple man's inhumanity to man. People are shouting marginalization and oppression yet you cannot feel the pain of fellow oppressed people without first checking if they share the same religious beliefs as you. How then can there be justice on earth? |
