The only people who can tackle poverty are the leaders. What has any northern governor really done to push education? Or empower people? They dont care. Not their problem.Actually, I wish they would just go ahead and tackle it. I have spoken against poverty over and over again. The almajiri system is embarrassing. The most I and many here can do, for now at least is keep saying and hoping that poverty would be tackled for it definitely will go a long way. It is about old men because it is clearly abnormal for a 50 year old to bé lusting after a 13 year old.It is abnormal to you. Fine. You are allowed that opinion. It is not abnormal to them(and here is where my argument lies). For you to make them see the abnormality would take time and of course some form of education that they are yet to take.It definitely isnt by just criminalising it. All the hausa girls I am friends with are well educated. But I hear them speak of girls( of similar social backgrounds) getting married just after sec education(which shows them as teenagers). These girls definitely see nothing wrong with getting married because they were brought up to see it as normal. Anyone telling them otherwise had better have something substantial to back it up. Marriage to an elderly, I heard in just one case and this was an 18yr old whose father disapproved of the marriage but with her and her mother's strong head, father had to agree. Do you still call this the case of an oldman taking advantage of a lil girl? How come the fathers of the girls see no reason in giving them out? Again, it is all about indoctrination. This is not about what happened in arabia 1000 years ago. This is about today.I agree. But today, some people have simply failed to stop living in the 6th century C.E and no one should force them otherwise. Its sad though that northern women have mostly been silent on this matterMaybe they just dont see it as a problem or dont see how talking online helps them out. |
I am not here making a case for Yerima or anyone else. All I have written has been against people claiming the higher moral ground. The paedophiles dont need to start coming to Nigeria. You may have heard the explanations that the law never changed. The propagandists only blew it for whatever reason they have. Well, I am not saying anyone has to do any of the above. I have actually not seen it in my immediate surrounding. But there is a big problem when some people think they have the right to insult others because they see things differently or want to do things differently. Even as a social worker or an extension worker working with rural people, the worst of ways to speak with them is to tell them that their method is bad and speak all the ills against them. They'll more probably get stronger that way and defy it even if it is a law. That older men do it is what everyone keeps hammering on. So, is it majorly about the old men or teenage marriage in general. I'd want to think it is about the marriage in entirety. In one of my posts elsewhere, I had mentioned the need to promote education. With that, they'll less likely be married. Poverty should be looked into so that fathers dont see their daughters as their meal ticket. All the noise is just for the time being and the poor girls would only have been used as a means of cheap propaganda against the north/ muslims while things go back to the way they were if the issue of education and poverty are not tackled. oyb: The fact of the matter is that all this morality talk is a smokescreen. We never hear of 9 year olds marrying 9 year olds. It is always a much older man, marrying a sexually immature child. Perhaps if oyibo pedopiles realize nigeria is a safe haven for them and flood nigeria you will understand. |
Wow. Alhamdulillah. |
stillwater: Madam Enough!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have had enough with this crap. What a background you had! Even if you'll deny any other thing, you can't deny that your background is faulty as regards speaking with others. If this is the best way you can talk, I wonder if anyone taught you anything at all. Wow! I wrote the post you quoted some 3 days ago and you just couldnt help but comment? Follow follow no go kill ya. *********** I know(from experience) that the most majority of the ranters here have to education is their keyboard and screen. I am however a patient teacher and will try to help you understand my position on this matter. On the matter, I dont totally agree with teenage marriage. At the same time, I see no reason to make unnecessary noise over it. In fact, I have been trying to find out the implication of legislating against it according to the Islamic law. Mind you, I have worked on several campaigns against child marriage, female genital mutilation, etc..and with my interaction with doctors from different parts of the world, and in particular, a woman who's worked with the WHO and the UN, I have realised that the propaganda that these issues meet is unnecessary and a big distraction from more important issues with higher mortality rates as malaria and infectious diseases. In fact, this mentor of mine had made it known to me that she quit working on the FGM campaign after realising that it wasnt worth the money and time spent on it. Now, madam internet warrior, let me sing it to your ears that there is nothing wrong with teenagers getting married. In societies where morality is upheld, it is better to encourage willing teenagers to get married rather than have them committing illicit sexual activities. That is better for them as they are protected from abuse. They dont get to run helter skelter looking for pills to terminate their pregnancies nor would they be needing quack doctors for D&C. No baby factories would be taking advantage of them. Now if you haven't heard about teenage pregnancy being rampant, it is high time you get yourself a tv or @least get your fat body out of the house and join the others at newspaper stands. Funny, you needed the pregnant teens to come close to your family before knowing or you want them to come show it to you because you are too blind to see them while walking on streets. Even more advanced climes have sought better means of helping the younger generation. First it was about simply talking to boys about condom use and girls about contraceptives. Now, they even go ahead and produce condoms to fit them. In a Muslim society, no such condom would be allowed. What is allowed is marriage. What part of any of the above is difficult for a supposed, educated mind to understand. My concerns have always been to however legislate on this matter. How early is too early should be spelt out in the law. What can happen in such marriages. How their education must continue..etc. Even with these, people should not be forced on the choices they make for themselves/ their wards. It is a big problem when even dolts assume that they have the better argument because some majority at a place hold the same thought. With a little more exposure, beauty can be seen in diversity and you wont be crying foul because some see things differently from you. the 'weird' things are so much in the world that it should never come as a surprise that you are probably one of them. ******* And btw, dont you refer to me as a madam. I am not one of you grown ups with no sense of shame talking like you are from the gutters. ******* Young, ambitious, much more reasonable and POLITE- that's me! |
The age at which a girl must marry is not defined in Islam. So, marrying very early doesnt make you more religious nor does marrying late make you less of a Muslim. If anything about being married early is proven to be unhealthy vis a vis, VVF, I dont think legislating against it is wrong. In essence, if early marriage is seen to be of great danger to the girls involved, legislating against it would be right. |
Well, there are risks associated with early pregnancy. Sheikh Gumi is advised to make proper consultations before making statements like this. Maybe not all 12 y.olds get VVF but many do. Comparing Nigeria with Britain is a No No. In Nigeria maternal mortality in women with less risk is high. That of teenage motherhood is even higher. |
BetaThings: Muslims typically are more conscious during RamadanHe paid his rent. I don't think there's much the landlord can do. About giving people water in ramadan, do put in mind that Islam allows some people NOT to.fast. Would you deny them water as well? |
Is this some kind of drama to get NLers Wife- I will report you to Nairalanders. The madams there can help me tongue lash you. Husband- I will meet you there. We will see who can drive the bigger sympathy. Abi how else can this be explained? |
The real things of the end time. ...Islam would be strange. |
Wow!!! |
Egba girl: Smh still. Yea we have to be sensitive to cultures. I know all of this stuff. Cultural imperialism is wrong BUT pain is pain and it is universal and it transcends culture. For example, the issue of female circumcision, you can argue for it in so many way but when it becomes an issue of forcing young girls against their will and in the process, some of them die then I have a problem with it. If as a grown person after understanding the whole process, I choose to go ahead and do it, fine! But a six year old being forced to undergo that gruesome process? In an unhealthy environment? Come on! And facing the possibility of deathI agree with what shymmex said concerning cultures. There is a very big problem with People thinking their own way is the best and that is how I have a problem with those claiming the higher moral ground on this issue. When female genital mutilation was outlawed in Kenya, girls who thought the law was against their typical ceremony of right of passage went into bushes and CUT THEMSELVES. The girls you are fighting for may turn against you if the best way to it is to shout them down, call them names and call their culture/religion bad. From experience, I know that Nigerians will make this a big issue only at this moment. What about the long term? How about other teenagers, not married to old/young men but pregnant with children? Shouldn't we be generally looking to protect all girls of all cultures? The issue has to be given a holistic approach. Cultural and religious differences have to be understood. Laws that benefit people of all divides can then be promulgated. |

NOt having child marriage would be really good. But this matter goes beyond simply saying No. What do you have for them in exchange for it? How do you change the thought that you are trying to change their social order. It is not the marriage per se but what goes on in it. People need to stop being overly emotional. Is it the sex, the maturity, the education they'll be missing? Dealing with the relevant issues rather than religious/tribal bigotry will go a long way. #justsaying. I didnt read the OP. |
toluene12: teenage premarital sex is a moral issue while early marriage is about social responsbility as a wife and her health to carry and nuture a child. The latter cannot be a panacea to the former.I agree with you no doubt that these are issues to look in to. |
ileobatojo: There is NO reason to disallow them that? This is the number one most idi*otic statement I have ever read from a supposedly educated person. I hope part of you giving your kids everything will include giving them a choice penis to screw 'legally' when they are 9! So the answer to premarital sex is not proper sex education, proper parenting, proper exposure and prosecution of child molesters and adults who take advantage of children's innocence etc; the answer is to forcefully marry them out to against their free will to a grown ass adult that sees them as nothing but a tight vagina to sleep with? What an imbec*ile!!You didnt have to be insultive. There is nothing to gain from that. Oh, probably your religion teaches nothing on decorum? The government would have to further define what age is too early. It is already in practice and no amount of shouting or bursting the nerves in your throat would help the matter. That you see things differently doesnt make you any better. The morals that you want to claim is even obviously lacking in you as shown by your present and previous posts. When you started to test drive all the men in this world in order to choose one, how old were you? |
I have a question and I do not wish to open a thread about it. Who do I ask and where?
Have you asked your questions yet? #wondering. |
