mr purebreed dwarf , please face ur ministry. OP got the message, it is foolery for any serious starter to buy any yeye seedlings for 800,where each f1 seed from seedco pack cost less than 60Naira. I disdain folks teaching new farmers bitter lessons in the name of profiteering. NB .any acclaimed grower that plants a pawpaw one feet from a wall , is no better than a rookie. |

Agriculture › Re: Bizclass-open-field Tomato Farming In Edo State (heirloom And Hybrid Varieties) by dgitrader(m): 1:54pm On Feb 23, 2017 |
Bizclass: My bro, I really do appreciate your concern and advice. Yes, before embarking on this project, we did some field experiment at Ekosodin, near the university of Benin, Edo state in March, 2016. The main goals behind establishing that farm was; 1. To determine whether hybrid/heirloom tomato seeds could survival in the SOUTH ?. 2. If it was possible to grow hybrid/heirloom tomato in the SOUTH in an OPEN FIELD SITUATION? 3. Is it possible for beef/heirloom varieties to bear fruits in the SOUTH? A plot measuring 100ft by 100ft was used. However, the first/second batch did not germinate(upon the poultry manure that was used). A bit frustrated, we checked back on the website and that's when we realized that we have been making a mistake from the beginning. You see, as you have already noted, a Farmer needs to KNOW his seeds properly. What weather condition is bested suited for seed germination, growth and fruiting? What diseases are the seeds resistant too? These details were clearly spelt out on the website but we, somehow just failed to take note.(we did not even test soil ph.) We also realized that there were several varieties of tomato seeds, each with its own demands.Fortunately, the tomato seeds we purchased at the time was for the spring(rainy) season, so there was no need for irrigation. But you may want to ask, Did they fruit( beef tomato seeds in particular) and how long? I'll answer those questions in pictures with this current set. Insects issues didn't really surface at the time but that doesn't mean we are not prepared if there is an outbreak. And to irrigation, water will be supplied by the normal water tanker to the farm and we will disperse with the aid of a raingun. Between june/july that year, I visited a tomato farm in kano and i was told about some critical requirements, needed to guarantee their survival. 1.QUALITY OF SOIL on which they are grown. 2. Weather. (I'll talk about them subsequently) I saw the threads you mentioned and I also saw a thread by kizyte on tomato farming. Maybe we just need to plant the seeds, nurture them and see what happens.
Much respect, my brother. . water tanker to supply a farm?that is a sureway impending loss . have u thought of drip irrigation using a well. raingun for tomatoes? impending crop failure. get to know more about tomatoes, even from locals . 5/6ft between beds? that's complete waste of planting population . irrespective of variety, tomato is 3 or 4 per square meters. an acre takes over 10k plants. u dint mention staking in all ur steps, I hope no errors on that too . ur pilot scheme on 1 plot failed , but u have decided to expand aggressively without learning I sincerely hope u curtail ur losses and boldly share ur lessons with folks here. |

Ejulafarm: Update...
Challenges
Some of the major challenge with vegetable farming is effective irrigation and labour. This challenge has made me cut down my project size from 10 plots to about 3 plots for the time being.
Effective irrigation: A pumping machine + hose is manageable for 1 plot but not suitable at all for 3 plots and above. I am not saying it is not achievable but it will be unnecessary stressful. So please take note.
So from inquiries, use rain gun or drip. Yes it entails huge cost but with proper management the ROI is worthwhile.
Labour: Trying to maintain 3 plots of Ugu by yourself is very tasking. Considering especially my archaic form of irrigation. If it is a crop like plantain, then it is very possible to effectively manage even an acre but vegetables are so tender that they need daily attention. From watering to applying fertilizer to weeding.
So far... The effort is worthwhile. I have learnt a lot and with further better management, the venture would be rewarding.
Ejula Farm... kudos. I learnt the hard way also. From irrigating acre of tomatoes using traditional basin flooding(mentally and physically draining, coupled with water rationing challenges) , i am repositioning to smartfarm 3plots using vertical sacks, driplines, and green house, all using high density planting population. Its a learning curve. I hope to major in ugu someday, but fencing is a priority before that. I have learnt a lot from this great thread and hope to start updating with contributions soon. You and other contributors are really inspiring |
