What im guessing is the price of cement will go down for some months 2-3 months then everyone hail the phd holder, prices then creep up again as the real issues obviously hasn't be addressed.

We have a department responsible for regulation who needed to be told to do their job, i mean you wonder how the licenses of these so called marketers have never been suspended or withdrawn always blaming some invincible cabals. na only Jonathan dey see cabals?

Cement price may drop as NNPC increases diesel supply to producers

  UDEME AKPAN 20/05/2011 03:24:00

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has boosted the supply of diesel to support commercial production and distribution of cement in the country. The effort is directed at achieving the price reduction target handed down to cement manufacturers by President Goodluck Jonathan.

The Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, who made this known yesterday at an interactive session with journalists in Lagos said the Kaduna, Warri and Port Harcourt refineries are presently processing commercial quantity of diesel. Cement producers had blamed increased production and transportation cost on the high price of cement which had reached N2,500 per 50 kilogramme bag, up from N1,600 a year ago, citing rising diesel price which had climbed from N120 per litre to N175 per litre. Alison-Madueke, who confirmed the availability of commercial stocks in the country, said: “Today, all the refineries are producing diesel as we are only importing a little.

We have a 22-day storage capacity, which is good.” She, however, said the inability of the government to control the entire process was a major constraint. According to her, “The problem is the retail end of it. We need to be able to control it. What we can control is the bulk outputs as we give it out at N40 per a litre for kerosene, but they are selling at more than N100 per litre.

AGO is fully deregulated. You have the right to make profit but you do not need to profiteer”. The minister, however, said that necessary directive had been issued to the NNPC and the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) to sanitise the situation as soon as possible. She noted that though the country operates a free market economy, the Federal Government could not watch and fold its arms while innocent Nigerians go through hardship in accessing the vital cooking fuel due to the profiteering activities of some “middlemen”.

Allison-Madueke pointed out that: “Checks at the NNPC and its subsidiary, the Pipelines and Products Marketing Company (PPMC), indicate that we have enough in terms of product sufficiency. Our investigation shows that kerosene has however, become scarce and selling at high price due to distribution problems caused by middlemen who have made it their vocation to profiteer from the product.” As a way out, the minister charged the managements of the NNPC and the DPR to bring to an end the ugly situation within the next few days.

Under the arrangement, the NNPC through its subsidiary PPMC will ensure that products are loaded out from the three refineries and the coastal jetties to all the nooks and crannies of the country while DPR has the mandate to activate compliance measures and all necessary control strategies to squelch the incidents of arbitrary pricing and sharp practices. Already, the NNPC has swung into action by increasing the volume of kerosene allocation from 10 million litres to record 12 million litres per day to guarantee that the country has enough kerosene. The 12 million is in excess of the estimated national consumption level of about 10 million litres per day.

where were they when the price was climbing up? they were busy making their own on the side!

So the government didn't know to increase the amount of diesel in the market before ordering cement manufacturers to slash their prices

Nigerians will not appreciate progress even when it is obvious.

Jonathan has asked them cement manufacturers to crash the price of cement, do we have an idea why he has said so, what was the stake the past presidents including Jonathan himself benefit from the prices and now he has come out to tell them dont bring no share for me and crash your prices you have one month to make Nigerians happy so that my profile rises, or tell me if cement sells for N1,000.00 or less by mid June whose praises will Nigerians sing?

Some have once again argued for radicals who would just move to crash the prices, i say hey careful what u wish for, that radical could end up crashing the economy do you have any idea what the likes of Dangote can do to the national economy of this nation, do u even have an idea how the economy workshuh do you have an idea how many people benefit from the prices as it is today?

Nigeria is not a lost cause but it can not and will not be rescued by one man's act of bravery or stupidity, collective resolve to take this country out of where we are to where we want it to be is the key.

When Dora asked the telecoms coys to crash their prices didnt some say it was impossible, they only introduced Etisalat and gave it some concessions and what did we see, competition has not been sweeter!
No we dont have an idea why is he telling them, some former president did the say too, even threatened them. . .

wrong.

Genuine complains not directed to the right quaters should be frowned upon.It is wasteful and will not achieve anything. There you go again generalising about outcomes of feedback. Have you ever made any feedback formally that was not acted upon? You are assuming and basing your conclusions on hearsay and generalising based on that.I think there's something wrong in that and i wonder why you dont see anything wrong in your approach. You can only change things by doing things properly and in a well thought out manner. Have you ever sued a hospital and they didnt show up in court?have you ever sued a doctor/nurse and they showed contempt of court?what have you done to show grievances?
Sitting down behind a computer lamenting i repeat brings no changes, if you or any of the aggrieved members take action, then you may expect some things to change.
This is the fundamental Nigerian problem, you sit and complain and do nothing and expect change. There is a problem ,agreed, but you have to make effort if you want change. If you have a compelling case, go to SERVICOM, sue the doctor or the hospital or go to the MDCN which has a strong disciplinary committe. It is by doing things like these that advanced countries have developed better systems.
Save for doing the above, i see all the complaints on this forum as meaningless rant which will achieve nothing.
don't know what trust you work for but i'd definitely recommend putting cctv up smiley

like one of the tactics of getting rid of patients is asking them to go to court if they are dissatisfied, in a country where minor cases last decades
typical police sense, all those people complaining about their banks , their universities and politicians are just blowing ranting, well i guess its better to rant where lil god wont threaten you will hired policemen, and the issue of health workers in the country will be known to those hiring from elsewhere.

So what does the internet campaign hope to achieve?can you please let us know exactly just what this will achieve?
There are channels for complaints, there are channels for airing your grievances, there are processes in government hospitals for dealing with complaints. That will achieve results, crying on the internet won't do much.
I said this because i dont know what you expect here, we have agreed there is a problem, we have given reasons for the problem, we have identified ways in which it can be reduced. Ok what suggestions do you have?
still cant understand the use of the word campaign as if it some orchestrated attempt to label unprofessional doctors- there have only been two unrelated complaints about doctors in the past few weeks

what does the yapping on nairaland hope to achieve? what is being achieved by the commentators in the political section of the site?
it seems like you are from an environment/culture where genuine complaints is frowned upon, where feedback for improvement is just a buzzword;
the channels for complaints and processes for dealing with complaint are perhaps like many other things including the service they provide inefficient corrupt, and poorly regulated and with the attempts at defending these uncaring care workers, one shouldn't be surprised if patients are met with the same attitude of closing ranks and victimizing the complainer.

What they can do is, paint the lane dedicated for buses and put a sign up BUS LANE ONLY 6AM-9AM AND 4PM-7PM peak
with introduction of more buses they''l be cameras/officials monitoring the lane during peak hours, any other time anyone can use the lane

I see this internet campaign as seeking pity which wont make you or the system better.
can you imagine a medical doctor yet again thinking everyone making a complaint or stating their distaste to awful customer service is seeking sympathy

They are overworked
They are poorly paid
The society in general is rude
Everyone expects to be treated like kings bla blah

IF that's the case why is their strike always mostly about INCREASE IN SALARY and never strike on behalf of their fellow nurse and even patients
Strike for better equipments and fairer workload, these guys behave just like ASUU who only ever strike for wage increments but never  offer improve their own individual performance
Another worrying aspect is they refer you to nearby private clinics/hospital where they have financial interest, usually when they are on strike they are holed up here receiving fee paying customers, perhaps they are deliberately offering satanic  grin customer service so you have not option than to go private.

its not rocket science take a poll online or on the streets the result will overwhelmingly come back with the same result= extremely poor service, rude staff, scheming! its not enough to hide under come excuses of 'some' few bad eggs, the problem is there! admit it and deal with it, instead of always accusing genuine complaints as an attempt to 'spoil some non-existent' reputation!

PS: there are brilliant doctors/health workers out there, in fact when you come across these lot, you'd wonder if these people didnt attend the same lectures

Why price of cement is high – Ibeto
By MOSES AKAIGWE
Thursday, May 19, 2011

More Stories on This Section

An industrialist and Chairman of Ibeto Cement Nigeria Limited, Port Harcourt, Mr. Cletus Ibeto, has blamed the current high price of cement on an interplay of factors, including the price of diesel, the rising cost of trucking the product to different parts of the country by transporters and the after-effects of recent natural disasters in Japan.

The cement manufacturer disclosed that there is serious cement scarcity in the international market due to massive demand in Japan and by donor agencies, as reconstruction activities go on in the Asian country following the earthquake and tsunami of March 11. The situation, he said, has invariably impacted on the price of cement in Nigeria.

Ibeto, who was reacting to the ultimatum issued by the Federal Government to the Cement Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (CMAN), to reduce the per-bag price of the vital building material in 30 days, assured that the manufacturers would do whatever they could to obey the presidential directive.

He, however, pointed out that for the price of cement to come down, the critical factors contributing to the upward surge have to be addressed but said the manufacturers were glad that President Goodluck Jonathan who issued the deadline at a meeting with the association on Monday in Aso Rock, Abuja, identified the need to intervene with actions in order to make the product affordable to Nigerians.

“We will try as much as we can to see that the price of cement comes down but we also hope that as promised by Mr. President, government will go back to the drawing board to address the issues which contribute to the high cost of the product,” Ibeto told Daily Sun in an exclusive interview. He added that though the manufacturers had been craving for a reduction on duties charged on imported raw materials to only five per cent, from the present 30 percent, “import duty has little to do with the current high price of a bag of cement.”

According to him, huge sums are spent by the manufacturers on LPFO, a key cement manufacturing component and a special oil used in heating the klin during cement production, which contributes to pushing up the price of the end product.
But in a related development, David Iweta, a stakeholder in the cement industry with a cement bagging terminal facility in Sapele, has alleged that cement price was deliberately kept on the high side by the big cement manufacturers and importers whom he accused of running a cabal that made it impossible for new investors to go into the business.

“The cabal is deceiving the Federal Government,” he said, arguing that cement produced in the country was not supposed to cost more than N700 (against the present N1800 which he claimed was price at which the manufacturers sold to the distributors). Iweta, who was the guest of a television station in Lagos yesterday morning, advised President Jonathan to revalidate the revoked licences of some intending investors and approve the applications that had been pending for years, to have more cement injected into the market.

even though we know about 5 other large importers/manufacturers of cement in the country, people wont really ask why those ones are not selling at a lower price, funny thing obj or yaradua even re-issued them license to import but they must manufacture a certain percentage BUT most of them cant meet these manufacturing targets, some cant even import without incuring huge costs but hey the are pushing for importation only not minding the job creation aspect.

So you see it easier to blame the Mallam for their failures as if they also dont have local politicians in their pockets

Stop generalising. Not all health workers are like that.

Besides, its not like the patients are all saints either. When I was a student in LUTH, I remember a senior nurse being beaten to death in the Accident and Emergency by some Mushin thugs whose relative had just died. It is commonplace for doctors and especially nurses to be threatened, attacked or insulted at work. I've personally received several death threats while at work.

Add to that the constant risk of being infected with HIV, Hepatitis B, Tuberculosis or something even worse and its not hard to see why they are so cranky.
funny world eh? doctors/nurse feeling cranky because of disease they are meant to be treating- na only N5k abortion dem teach them for school?
which comes first? Better service begets Better Environment=Better behaved patients, you only have to think of private hospitals
why do you think patients there behave better on average than in these poorly managed environments

If the health managers there cant implement systems where customers are attended to in humane manner what exactly do you expect?
its as if they don't teach these death doctors how to 'manage' hospitals ; if they cant manage they should employ managers! and concentrate on treating patients

when they get to UK/USA they start forming friendly doctors cheesy

don't you notice how most Nigerian doctors try to defend anything critical about doctors?

LUTH has a bad reputation, fair enough they are overworked and the population is massive but there are hospitals in other parts of Africa even Nigeria with similar situations but the health providers are more professional about it, in fact some will make you understand their plight to calm your nerves and be a bit patient

These guys are good with asking for pay rise but not as vocal when it comes to asking for more hospitals to spread the work load

The House of Representatives yesterday at its plenary session rejected the proposal by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, to peg deposit and withdrawal of money by bank customers at N150,000 and N500,000 for individuals and corporate bodies respectively.

Accordingly, the House mandated the Federal government to ask CBN Governor, Mallam Sanusi Lamido to suspend further steps towards the implementation of the policy.

In their debate, most of the law-makers argued strongly that Nigeria was not ready for such policy .because adequate enlightenment programme had not been carried out by the nation’s apex bank to educate the populace on its implications for economic development

The objection to the policy was the outcome of the motion moved by Hon Jumoke Thomas-Okoya condemning the apex decision on the matter, stressing that the Nigerian economy is not ripe for such policy,

I support Afonja Warriors full time via newspapers, Nairaland and supersports highlights, we dey manage am  cool

@Jesoul
I certainly do appreciate the logistical challenges of European teams playing games on African soil . . . I daresay I'm more about going after the attitude and 'heart' of these teams towards their African fans. And FIFA I would classify as seperate from Euro teams/leagues and hence won't credit 'charity' done by FIFA to the EPL or Liga and co. FIFA generates profit worldwide, its only good business sense for them to continue feeding the cows they're milking abi?

There's nothing standing in the way of say a ManU from doing their own separate 'goodwill works', rather than hiding under the branches of FIFA. And it doesn't even have to be on-location since we all know say Africa get plenty problem. Sometimes during NBA/NFL games, they acknowledge the audience that may be watching in Asia or Europe or Turkey (when there was a turkish player on the court). If dem no wan spend money, little things like that to show at least they are aware and appreciate the loyalty of these fans. So no, its not necessary to have a -

I'm talking more in terms of whatever kind of gesture of goodwill they can do to show they have at least 'noticed us'.
hmm they also have fans from 150 countries across the world, you'll agree the NBA strategy is geared towards marketing also, and to be honest nigerian/african fans probably contributes less than many other countries or continents. And i guess a huge portion of FIFA revenue comes from English/European clubs hence the are indirectly contributing to charity cause in Africa, many of these clubs have their CSR on point and a little extra dig im sure i can find some pertaining to africa, Tottenham supports SOS South Africa and part of their tour will include visits and donations,
perhaps if we can get rid of crooks like most NFF admin we probably will be able to attract better support--most of the business/sport dont have a lot on their plate and minggling with unaccountable ministries and NGO doesnt make much business sense

good contribution.  this is the point i was attempting to make in my earlier posts.  We commend Fashola but these trains are unsavory and i'm not convinced he's getting value  for the amount of money being spent.  These trains are an eyesore to be running above ground in a city trying to achieve mega-city status.  Im starting to wonder what the quality of the Eko-Atlantic city is going to look like going by this tasteless standard.
I think the first consideration will be for safety and perhaps life span on these trains, these trains are refurbished and still have some years left in them. The vast majority of cars imported into the country are 5-10 years old cars that still run for years with good maintenance, those used for business still bring in money for their operators. Do you guys really know the cost of brand new trains, do you know the effect of brand news trains on the loan repayments and ticket price? A mega city doesn't necessarily require every thing to be brand spanking new especially for a state in Nigeria we cant afford it! we are not UAE, we dont want our great grand children to be repaying debt long after we are gone, these trains are fit for purpose, they come in at a price we/ppp partner can afford and will bring in enough cash to upgrade them in the future.

Ideally the
nigerian Navy should buy brand spanking new warships
Nigerian Airforce should be using the latest fighter jets
Airlines should operate only brand new aircraft

personally I prefer the smaller cuter trains from Europe or anything but the Aluminium trains from NYC with no cushion, but this will do
