If Igbos are the only people complaining of Bubu, how come Oduduwa secessionists started in Bubu's second term? The people of Benue and Southern Kaduna are proud of Bubu's govt? Igbos complain of marginalisation right from 1970, Bubu made it worse with nepotism but it doesn't affect the wellbeing of the generality of Igbos more than it affects other ethnic groups including the Fulanis who're so hated now. Igbos knew Bubu would fail woefully so they were mentally prepared GeneralPula: Mr Wise man. Happy weekend.
How come Igbos are always barking buhari has marginalized them? Buhari is a nepotism. Buhari this, buhari that?
It has been proved that Nnamdi azikwe was a Nepotistic leader and he marginalized other tribes when he was holding power..
Igbos are the most nepotistic tribe in Nigeria. No amount of Buhari is this or that can change fact and history ! |
Politics › Re: Olusegun Osoba: How Fake News From Foreign Media Triggered 1967 Civil War by DMerciful(m): 3:27pm On May 30, 2021 |
So in your mind the Igbos are the most suffering ethnic group in Nigeria because of Bubu's nepotism? You're not very wise. Igbos are the last group to actually feel whatever situation Nigeria brings. GeneralPula: Well detailed info brother..
I have a question..
I read on Nairaland few weeks ago that Nnamdi azikwe was a nepotistic leader..
They said when he was serving Nigeria, his cabinet was filled with igbos..
He even made an Igbo man a UI VC. This is what pained me most after reading the article on Nairaland..
How was he able to archive making an Igbo man UI VC?
Is it true that he was Nepotistic?
If he was truly nepotistic, then Buhari has been serving Igbos what Igbos served Nigeria when they were holding power! |

This is a childish account of history. The killings today by Fulani herdsmen allover Nigeria is because people are laughing at them? What makes you think then was any different from now? Okoyeebo: During the first coup, Igbo coup plotters killed Premier of the Western Region, the Prime Minister who was an Hausa man but conveniently forgot to kill Azikiwe who was an Igbo man.
Ironsi came into the picture and refused to execute the coup plotters because they were Igbos. Instead, he, delayed and moved them to Igboland.
Meanwhile, after the execution of Tafawa Balewa, Igbos in the North were laughing and making fun of Northerners.
I don't know if it was AFP who told the Igbo coup plotters not to kill their fellow Igbos or it was AFP who told Ironsi not to execute the Igbo coup plotters. |

Let's say I agree with your account, if the North wanted a return to the original system hence killing Ironsi and Igbos, how come Gowon did not return it to the original regional system but wasn't killed? How can civilian Igbos be responsible for the actions of a military dictator? Even if the Igbos don't like Ironsi, what can they do about it? What is stopping us today from going back to regional federating system? LegendHero: Many things led to the civil war Chief Osoba, do you want to say you don’t know history or you’re just trying to be politically correct?
Often many people believed the killing of Saraduana and Balewa are what led to the North uprising against the Ibos in the North but this is half truth. The Unitary decree of Aguiyi Ironsi caused as much harm as the coup. Infact, it was what led to the initial killing of Ibos in the North, and gave the fertile ground for the counter-coup.
I will give timelines of events below, if anyone need proof of any of the point I raise I will provide it.
Besides the killings of other tribesleader by the majorly coupist of Jan 1966 which everyone knows, the below are some other side of the story.
Decree of 1966: --May 1966, Ironsi announced that the regions are dissolved and there will be unification of the Public Service. -- Note: The Ibos have the highest number of civil service candidates then and they are more itinerant than other group, which implies that decree will favor them. --That decree was popular in the East and the Northerners received it as a blow on them and an act of marginalization against them because they have low number of civil servant. Remember Saraduana video that was trendy then. --To crown the fears of the Northerers, General Ironsi announced the unification decree while the constitutional report group he set up under the chairmanship of Chief Rotimi Williams haven't concluded their report yet. So he acted on this own.
Riots due to the Decree: --May 28,1966, A massive demonstration of about 20,000 people held against Ironsi decree in Kano which was organized to present a petition by the military authorities through the Emir of Kano. Slogans used were "Pure Federalism or We Bust", "We denounce abuse of power", We Separate Clearly". Infact that was when the North preached secession. 7 people were reportedly killed that day
Kano, Kaduna, and mining centers of Jos and Bukuru again protested with violence with placards saying "Let there be seccession". Infact over 92 people were killed in that weekend demonstration. They burnt Southerners quarter, houses and over-turned cars. Ironsi replied to the protest by saying he will declare certain area military areas, replace civil court with military court, and death penalty to anyone causing destruction in the North. He also accused the Arab world of being behind the protesters coz they are friends to Saraduana.
In June 1966, The government declared Dusk to Dawn curfew and these riots and killing still continued with rumors in the North that the Ibos will counter-attack. I don't know if Chief Osoba is referring to this.
--Over 100 emirs and Chiefs in the North gave an ultimatum to the Ironsi government to reject the decree. The resolution was presented by the 65-year old Sultan of Sokoto then who is also the uncle of Saraduana where they demanded Nigeria should stay Federal, and old boundaries should remain as before.
--The progom continues with several Ibos being killed across the North. The North sensed domination of the Ibos because the constitutional study group haven't submitted their report yet but Ironsi still abolished the system. Then the sentiment is that Ironis is running a Ibo regime just like people are talking about Fulani regime now. Gombe, Katsina, Bauchi also joined in the attacks mainly against the Ibos.
Counter Coup: --July 1966, the mutineers arrested Ironsi and later killed him which set the ball rolling for more violent attacks here and there. Brigadier Ogundipe who is the Chief of Staff to Ironsi made a broadcast saying the military is still in control with but what happened in few days after showed that the mutineers want none of Ironsi regime and are all out for revenge. Cut story short, Gowon took power.
--Aug 1966, Gowon took power as a Northerner, first it is decisive, he is a Christian and he is from the minority so he is seen as a great asset not only in Uniting the North as a common force but also to appear to the South as being relatively acceptable. Then he ordered the release of Awolowo, Enahoro and other political prisoners which was a masterstroke, now you have the buy-in of some Awo symphatizers who are by far the vast majority of the Yorubas and some of the Edo areas.
All these contributed to other riots, killings, thousand Ibos killed in the North, Ibos retaliated in Port Hacourt killing 25 Hausas, plane evacuating Ibos, and eventually the civil war as the ending game. |

Why is South Africa developed? codemaniacs: it was worse in 1960...
in 1960, Nigeria had only 1 university, primary and secondary schools were only in some places.
they didn't hand "true federalism" to Nigeria, Nigeria had to practise regionalism because of its diversity therefore Nigeria created the federalism for itself..
If they had continued colonialism until year 2000, only key parts of Lagos Island will be developed the rest of Nigeria will be total trash worse than Nigeria even had in the year 2000 of its 40th independence...

You say the British are bad yet they are caring for a place in Nigeria ravaged by Nigerians (bokoharam).
You said they are bad but when they handed over the country to you in 1960, it was better than now.

I agree we should go back to 1963 constitution because it's the only legitimate constitution since independence and the only constitution we made that brought prosperity to the regions. Other constitution pre-independence brought prosperity but were done by Britain LegendHero: I think Federal is one of the optimal solution to our co-existence and anything after that will be full dissolution of the entity called Nigeria.
Yeah I agree that it’s only on paper when you look at how Nigeria is currently being run but it was a true federal system pre-military era and that’s what Akeredolu is trying to say.
Federal itself is a terminology and if you don’t action it, you won’t have anything different from the status quo and we will just be going around in circles. |
Politics › Re: Constitution Review: Akeredolu Backs Return To 1963 Constitution by DMerciful(m): 3:33pm On May 26, 2021 |
It's really not about the word federal because the country is called the federal republic of Nigeria but we know there's nothing federal about it. You will not hear federal regarding Canada,US or UK. The reason why we're not federating is because some people wants to benefit far more than they contribute LegendHero: Yeah the military led us to where by are by abolishing that constitution. It’s a joint enterprise by Ironsi, Gowon who nailed the semi-final coffin, and even 1999 constitution is just another wahala on its own by those same military.
If you look critically at the Decree 34 that abolished the federal system which is the genesis, you will see that everything Federal was removed from the constitution.
--The 2. (1a) The Federal Military government will be known as National Military Government
The Federal Executive Council will be known as Executive Council.
--The 2. (1b) The Federal Capital Territory will be known as Capital Territory
They should just return the Federal back now and make it a true federalism, devolution of power, revenue sharing, state policing (infact not only police, the state should take over a lot more of what the FG is controlling), and etc. |
