Politics › Re: Budget 2017 Gets Boost As Oil Price Hits $58 by drnoel: 9:41am On Dec 13, 2016 |
sparrowkid: We could all remember the brouhaha that followed pegging the oil price to $38 in the 2016 budget even when oil price was sold at $30. Despite the government saying that they have consulted wide, some "emergency economic experts" were all over the space telling us that it was impossible. But at the end, since the end of February this year, oil price never sold below $38.
Majority of the so-called "experts" have never come up to say that they were wrong. They should apologize to us because it was on the basis of their wrong postulations that some people were attacking the budget team. The moral of the story is that we should not because of primordial interest condemn the work of the others. We may be wrong and they may be right.
God bless my dear country. Then u overlooked the efforts of kwachukwu who was directly or indirectly involved in the efforts to make OPEC cut down production which was solely the reason oil prices stayed stable and then slowly sluggishly started rising. The budget team was incompetent, that one u know and thats why they where condemned. That someone is incompetent doesn't mean he/she can't make good suggestions. I think we should please differentiate between criticism and condemnation here. Those in power should not hope to be treated with kids glove cos they hold and run the collective lives of lots of people so they should expect to be criticized, insulted and condemned if need be so that they can be on their toes. |

First time behind d wheels for me was in owerri, a long time ago. I had kept pestering my cousins to allow me drive their cars but they refused. Na so one faithful day one of my cousins took ill and I had to run errands for him. Na that time I learn say driving in ur head and starting a car na two different things. I must have driven that car like a million times in my dream but in real life the 4king car no gree move. It started without problem but when I want to move it, it will jerk and go off. I must have been there for over an hour trying to get that car to move. Anyway I finally suceeded after a while but I should have known that my initial stress was a sign of more problems to come. 10 minutes from the house at the mechanic workshop I was bringing the car to, I almost ended the life of the mechanic and his boys. To worsen matter, the crazy car stopped and refused to come back on. Luckily the guy knew my cousin's car so he came out from his hiding place thinking it was my cousin. When he saw me, he almost ran back in till I called his name, my cousin had told me to call him by name. Anyway he checked the car and found out I had completely burnt down the battery from the perpetual starting and going off, I had also destroyed the trigger head or so of the alternator (car experts make una no vex, thats what the guy told me then). My sick cousin almost busted a gasket with laughter when I returned to his place with very round saucer eyes telling him what I had gone through. |

Family › Re: Why Do Nigerian Wives Nurse A Presumption Of Meanness From Their Mother-in-laws? by drnoel: 3:06pm On Dec 09, 2016 |
DevGuru: This is meant to be a counter-thread to a post made by Benita27 titled "Why Are Nigerian Mother In-laws Too Mean Towards Their Daughter In-laws?" For ease of reference, the post has been reproduced below:
I noticed 80% of our Nigerian mother in-laws threat their daughter in-laws badly unlike their foreign counterparts, and this trend is so common, once a man says he wants to take you to see his parents instead of excitement a certain fear creeps in. personally i'm not scared of meeting the man's father because i assume father's trust their sons to have made the right choices, but for the mothers is not usually the same, was able to ask someone if she felt same and she confessed feeling worse. grin Why are our Nigerian mother in-laws so mean?. Need your contributions, and Ladies how do you feel when getting to meet them?.
Even though Benita27 claimed to have sought clarification, she already indirectly made a clarification to the issue by revealing that she would naturally be afraid to meet her mother-in-law, even if it was for the first time. The environment through Nollywood has poisoned our ladies' minds so that by default, as they are planning to get married, they consciously prepare for war with their innocent mother-in-laws. This situation is so bad that even the meekest mother-in-law may become somewhat cruel as a result of the extremely defensive attitude which the wife displays. There are many good mother-in-laws but our ladies are now taught never to give them a space.
I'm not sure of other ethnic groups but I can speak of mine, Yoruba. This menace seems to have found a permanent seat among us and it usually throws this ugly situation at us (husbands) - You have to Choose one between your mother and me!.
Someone might wonder why I feel so concerned. It's because my wife carelessly lost a great fortune to this menace. Her married sisters advised her never to be friendly with my mother even though she had no reason to be cruel towards my mother - the incident remains the ugliest I've ever witnessed in my marriage... It's really a long story but you can read it here https://www.nairaland.com/3206538/wifes-siblings-breaking-us-apart Bros that problem is age long. Its hard to find a wife who is not at loggerheads with the mother-in-law. My wife too spites fire anytime my mom is mentioned. It really used to surprise me till I saw with my own eyes that most of my cousins also have similar problems. Its a female thing though there are exceptions. |

Politics › Re: 2019 : North Central Politicians Unveil New Party by drnoel: 10:49am On Dec 09, 2016 |
omohayek: Yes, I know all too well the sad history of regionalism in Nigerian politics, but just because things were done that way in the past doesn't mean that they must be so in the future.
The trouble with parties with regional origins is that they find it difficult to shake off their "tribal" coloration even if they start trying to go national; the alternative approach is what you currently have with the ACN/CPC to APC transition, whereby a free-market, pro-business party is yoked to a statist party led by an ex-general, and the result is a completely incoherent governing platform.
What the Nigerian masses really need isn't yet more parties of "come and chop" politicians funded by godfathers who've enriched themselves through corrupt means. What they need are parties which actually stand for something, which draw their funding from the mass membership, and which choose their leaders through truly open primaries instead of backroom deals between godfathers.
Above all, the Nigerian masses need politicians who appeal to them as individuals who want better roads, safer streets, more jobs, better schools for their children, etc., not by saying "my kinsmen, it's our turn to 'chop' from the 'national cake'"; any party which fails to make such a broad national appeal from the outset will always remain vulnerable to tribal attacks; no southerner would ever vote for the CPC, no matter what policies it pronounced, just as only westerners supported the ACN, and only easterners backed the APGA. It was always enough to say "they are a Hausa/Igbo/Yoruba" party for people to close their ears to anything these parties might have had to say. A Daniel has come to court. Again well said but u know its all im the theory. Its all wishful thinking. Such a political system as u quoted could be the solution that Nigeria needs but members what one needs and what one gets are usually in pratice, two extremes. They are usally parallel and they never meet. Its why I said that once Nigerian learn to make their minds up and speak individually and also stop following these politicians like Zombies. Things will change. A national party that cuts across geopolitical zones in this country with ethmic bias is for now not possible in.Nigeria. |

omohayek: The last thing Nigeria needs is yet another useless, regionally-restricted, tribal-based party. Here you all are jabbering on about "SW this", "SS that", "NC the other one", "Afonja blah blah", and yet not a single one of you has anything to say about actual political ideas; what sort of politics is this, in which ideology plays absolutely no role whatsoever?
You can all keep fooling yourselves by thinking that the formation of yet more parties along the lines of the existing ones will ever make a difference. As long as you care more about where politicians are from than what they intend to do when they get power, Nigeria will never go anywhere developmentally, even if the current set of thieves are replaced by a younger and fresher bunch of wannabe thieves. You ignorant, insanely tribalistic Nigerians are your own worst enemies. Well said, I give u that. I almost cried reading ur words. It shows there is still much hope for Nigerians. I mean I have been thinking in that past that clear rational logical thinking eluded us Nigerians. I mean when u meet a Nigerian outside the shore of Nigeria he/she gives u the impression of maturity and clear thinking but this same person turns into an agbero once u meet him/her in Nigeria. I mean when we stop following people who don't know better than us, when we learn to cultivate the habit of always asking questions, keeping people we lead us on their toes, things will change in Nigeria. @Omohayek, to answer ur question. I will ask u one of.mine. Have u forgotten that all present and past political parties in Nigeria were built along regional fault lines. Its always starts like that before it metamorphs to other regions so its not new. The thing u should look for is the size and how.much strength they can muster during the general elections. Nigeria news as many mega parties as possible for a clear voice of the masses. |

Iam4Atiku: Wrong, in this case, it's divide and conquer. If the AC wing of APC leaves, the North Central becomes formidable and sentimental, the North-East presents Atiku, Buhari stands no chance. The North-East can't abandon Atiku for Buhari. Norh-Central feel marginalized. The South-East is already aggrieved with Buhari, same as South-South. The only issue now will be the South-West, because you can hardly predict them. They give their votes to the highest bidder(with due to people from that region, facts are there to back my claim). Buhari will be left with his North-West people, maybe some part of North-Central and Maybe some part of South-West.
You can agree with me that Buhari can't win North-East this time, he can't win South-South and South-East. So, whoever the South-West gives block support carries the day. And if you take out Aregbesola, Fayose, Ambrose, Tinubu, Obasanjo(still skeptical though) from the South-West, then you know what's left for Fashola and Fayemi to gather for Buhari! Like ur analysis and it pains to say it is quite true IMAO. It pains cause most of the south west and my cousins are directionless and will vote in masses like cows for whoever their leader give them. Was speaking to one of my cousins the one concluding his maters in Aberdeen. I asked him if he was willing to vote who he would have voted for among the south west top shots and he said and I quote "whoever the south west fields and supports would generally be the person". I was sad but understood it mean if Tinubu gets his boys behind Buhari the southwest will back Buhari again. One wonders if they don't know better or if like one of ours Fela (a son of the soul) prophesied in his song "Zombie". Time will tell afterall all we ask for is a better Nigeria. |

Abeg muke una give us (Muslims) a rest - see how you are twisting this to make it as if Muslims caused it - as usual blaming others for your own follies.
It should be obvious to anyone that this bill was sponsored by Christians out hate and rivalry and also to spite Muslims for having Sharia, in continuum of their general agenda to checkmate Islam and Muslims at any and every opportunity; unfortunately, this time the proponents failed to think through and look beyond their hatred by properly taking time to consider the implications of what they are asking for before rushing to submit their proposal.
It serves them right, Muslims will not oppose them but support them; let them reap what they are sowing - they deserve it. His name alone sounds muslim. Ur intetest shouldn't be what those fools in the house will reap but the repacurtions of their actions on d masses. |
