Nairaland has gone to the dogs. To think that a topic in violation of rule 8 is on the front page leaves much to be desired. a clasic example of the larger Nigerian society drowing in lawlessness. Sad.

HNosegbe: I just had to highlight that part, for the benefit of those who got carried away by the title of the thread.
Do our own MPs think they are underpaid? will they reject any pay rise as 2015 approaches? If the answer to any of the questions above is No then what is your point?
Politics › British Members Of Paliarment Protest Pay Rise by dustydee(op): 3:23pm On Dec 10, 2013
CABINET MINISTERS and MPs have rejected plans to increase the amount they are paid by 11 per cent.

The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (Ipsa) is set to bring forward proposals to increase salaries from £66,396 to £74,000, in a move that it says will shed light on what members of parliament are paid. A spokesman said the plans were fiscally neutral and would add nothing extra to the taxpayer’s bill. “MPs have given away the right to set their own pay, they gave that responsibility to Ipsa so they don’t get to vote on it,” he said.

“MPs have always voted on their own pay and made decisions based on what might be in the newspapers, so salaries were kept down but other things like the very generous pensions and resettlement payments increased. It’s not right that it’s done in that calculated way. There should be some transparency and it should be made clear exactly what MPs are getting.”

Chief secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander told the BBC’s Andrew Marr that the public would find the pay rise “utterly incomprehensible” at a time when public sector pay is being squeezed. Defence secretary Philip Hammond said he would not accept the increase while the troops he presides over face a one per cent rise in their pay. Labour leader Ed Miliband and Liberal Democrat Nick Clegg both said they would not accept any extra money, but there have been pockets of support for the plans.

A spokesman for the prime minister said David Cameron would continue to make the point that “the cost of politics should be going down and not up,” adding that the government would urge restraint from Ipsa over pay. But politicians have no power to stop the increase, and research by Ipsa found that two-thirds of MPs believe they are underpaid – raising questions about the political motivation for rejecting a pay rise in the run up to the 2015 election. The changes could see resettlement payments and final salary pensions removed and expenses cut.

I agree with most of what you said. I joined them in 2006 as a graduate and my pay was 85k while my friend who joined the same day was 80k. I got most of the benefits you list but not gratuity when I resined after 6 months. It is not the ideal work environment but I like some of the work culture (like switching off the lights during lunch break). It is a good training ground but racial issues are common as well. Anytime I stayed at work beyond 5pm was by choice.
Career › Re: Ill Treatment Of Staff At Huawei Technologies by dustydee: 2:00pm On Dec 09, 2013
Raxxye: What you are saying about CNPP is true. My friend got an offer there early last year, but refused it(even though he was jobless) because of the gruelling work condition he saw the staff pass through. He felt he might die within a month if he accepted the offer and stayed. Their site was in one riverine area in Ondo State. 3 months on and 12 days off. They eat their own food and drink their own water while at work. They pay their own transport when going on the 12 days off(to and fro), plus their terrible living condition while at work, plus lots of other ill-treatments! Those Chinese guys are devils!
You are joking, right? Does your friend know that it is against the labour laws in Nigeria (oil and Gas) to work for that long without rest? It is a safety issue, but as usual for reasons best known to those affected, they choose to keep quiet.

Education › Re: Unemployability Of Nigerian Graduates by dustydee: 8:32am On Dec 09, 2013
I think what a lot of Nigerian graduates lack is discipline. There is so much out there to do, not just in Nigeria but outside as well but we do not have good work ethics. Also a lot of graduates do not know what they want. Ask a graduate what he/she wants to do and they have no idea. So how will you work towards what you don't know? There is also this defeatist attitude. Most graduates believe if they do not know someone they cannot get a good job. True and false. I got 3 jobs in Nigeria without knowing anyone (all within 1 year of my NYSC). My third job was with a government oil and gas agency which most people think you cannot get into unless you are highly connected. How can you win when you have admitted defeat even before the battle starts? On the other hand, I used to think it was an anomaly to get a job by knowing someone. My current company pays staff who recommend successful candidates (Experienced) who go on to stay in the company for 3 months.
Need to go to work. . . . Later

sexkillz: Let's say someone insults you and you complain. Then he's banned. But then, he comes back with a new moniker, what do you suggest should happen?
close down the new moniker and extend the ban by a predetermined time. I feel the current ban system is arbitrary and does not act as a deterrent to a lot of people not including serial offenders. If I may ask, what is the essence of banning someone for 100 years? Sure that is not a deterrent is it?

sexkillz: How about hardened Nairaland criminals?
I mentioned that 1 year should be the maximum ban applicable. 1 year in the digital world is a very long time. There is no point banning someone for 100 years - it is better to just uprightly ban them from the forum. And I asked how id the ban calculated? You and Seun can enlighten us. Thank you. What is the punishment for a moderator that insults members or break nairaland rules? and who enforces the punishment?
Nairaland General › Re: Suggestion To Moderators On BANNING! *fellow Nlanders Wat Do U Think* by dustydee: 4:59pm On Nov 29, 2013
If I may add, @Seun how is the ban duration calculated? Even in real life, only hardened criminals are sentenced to infinite years imprisonment. I will suggest shorter ban periods of no more than a year for serious offences. Also, what is the essence of a ban? is it so that the offender will not be able to post or so they can register a new ID. In summary, I believe 12 months should be the maximum ban length and should only apply to the section where the offence was committed.

The International University (IU), Vienna was an unaccredited private university located in Vienna, Austria, with a subsidiary in Kiev, Ukraine. According to IU, it was chartered in 1980 by the U.S. state of Alabama as a private degree-granting postsecondary institution.[1] The Vienna operation was founded in 1981 as "European Christian College". Beginning in 2001, IU was nationally accredited until 2003, when IU's university accreditation was withdrawn by the Austrian Accreditation Council.[2] In 2011, IUV's sponsoring association went into bankruptcy and was shut down by court order.
When did you make the deposit? the university went into bankruptcy in 2011 so if you paid them after 2011 then you only have youeself to blame for not knowing enough about the school you wanted to attend.

dsaynt: Are you trying to tell me that NLNG pays higher than Total, Agip and Chevron? I doubt that. They pay well but not as much as the IOCs. Don't forget that the staff of NLNG are made up of staff of these OICs.
Can some tell me the highest paying by sector? i.e.
Manfacturing: Top 5
Telcoms: Top 5 - 1. Etisalat 2. MTN, 3. Glo 4. Ericsson, 5. Airtel
Oil & Gas (multinationals): Top 5 1. Mobil 2. NLNG 3. Total 4. Chevron 5. Shell/Agip
Oil & Gas (local): Top 5 No idea
Banking/Financial Services: Top 5 No idea
My Opinion, but it all depends on experience and negotiating skills.
Foreign Affairs › Ghana's Minister Sacked Over $1m Claim by dustydee(op): 3:32pm On Nov 08, 2013
Ghana's Deputy Communications Minister Victoria Hammah has been sacked after she was recorded allegedly saying she would stay in politics until she has made $1m (£600,000).

"If you have money then you can control people," she seems to say on the tape which has been widely circulated.

Ms Hammah has not yet commented on the tape or her sacking.

The BBC's Sammy Darko in Accra says she played a key role in President John Mahama's election last year.

Some pundits will feel vindicated over her sacking, as they warned that she was too young and inexperienced to serve in government, our correspondent says.
In August, she said there was a lot of pressure on her to steal public money because people thought that, as a minister, she was rich.

She described such demands as "obnoxious", reports the Ghanaweb news site.

"Corrupt politicians are the reflection of [a] corrupt society!" it quotes her as saying.

Ms Hammah first came to the public attention after stumbling several times while making a speech and then saying she had been given the wrong text.

On the tape, which has not been independently verified, she says: "I will not quit politics until I make one million dollars."

She also criticising another deputy minister, calling her "senseless, ugly, loud and egoistic".

Information Minister Mahama Ayariga did not give any reason for Ms Hammah's dismissal in her one-sentence announcement.

But it comes 24 hours after the tape went viral on social media and was played on a local radio station.

Her driver has been arrested on suspicion of making the recording of her conversation.

Our correspondent says many Ghanaians are asking if her right to privacy was infringed by the release of the tape.
