Properties › Re: Nigerian Cooking Makes House Smell: London Landlord Denies Gambian Accommodation by dustydee: 9:25am On Jan 16, 2020
The smell of some of the things we cook can be very uncomfortable. Imagine cooking with stockfish, crayfish or Locust beans, things can get unbearable especially if it's a multi tenant apartment. Also the smell tends to linger on even after the tenant leave and the landlord will have to make arrangements to deodorise the property.
It is however wrong for her to refuse renting the property to him but she could have put restrictions in the tenancy agreement.

Very true but why get a degree that you can’t defend. If the guy is able to sell himself well as being better than someone with just a certification, he may end up in a very good place. But that cyber security from Geo, e get as e be- the culture shock will be great grin
My colleague studied something close to history although he was into networking before moving to cyber security (He did an MSc too).

hello seniors,
thank you for your responses
for someone like my spouse who has no knowledge of IT or programming or anything, (actually studied Geography)
what would you suggest?
Msc in Cyber Security with Placement or
Msc in Project Management with Placement
Please note that he would like to switch to tier 2 visa after his course

For me, MSc in project management is a waste of time and resources, you do not need a degree for that. Cyber security or data science is a good one.

Lol, boss thanks for the reply, it's just desperation o, I've been getting feedbacks quite alright, and most of them have been saying *thank you for your application, we'll get back to you*, so I just thought maybe using an agent would make it faster, and more efficient. But, I think I'll just keep applying and wait for a positive response.

And yes, I have checked, my skills fall under shortage occupation list.
Google tier 1 exceptional talent visa. You should be eligible for that but you need someone in the UK to write a reference for you. You don't need a job offer. Once you get a reference from someone in the UK, you can apply to the relevant professional institutions for endorsement. If successful then you apply for your visa. It is cheaper and more flexible than tier 2.

I am not a cyber security expert but my former cyber security colleague did not know how to program. He encouraged me to become one but I wasn't sure if I'd have the time for the training.
Also, information security is another field that people can go into. And yes you sometimes do not require actual experience of you have the basic foundation, can defend yourself and your CV during interviews and learn fast on the job. I have learnt the hard way in the UK that humility will seldom land you a job. Do not lie but make your job look very big and important.

One of my previous managers didn't have a college degree nor any certifications and he is currently Head of Engineering. It's all about skills and work experience. Almost every engineering position requires a technical assessment, so bluffing in your CV or interview will not help if you don't have the skills.
Sir/ma, this is not particularly true. It may be true for graduate positions or software roles but largely untrue for engineering roles. Except if by technical assessment you mean being asked technical questions in interviews which in most cases is a given. During my interview for my current role, I wasn't really asked any technical question. They just went through my CV with me to see if I have done some of what they wanted me to do. I was then invited for a face to face interview which I thought was going to be technical but they only wanted to see my face and that one lasted about 15mins because I had to ask them several questions to justify my time there.

all sons have the right to use a part or all part of his father's house... I saw that online yesterday, just wanted to point that out...

Nobody is asking nobody not to have some proceeds in thier father's house...
Does that mean they can use it for whatever they wish? Are you comfortable for them to rent out "their" rooms in the property or have them send strangers to stay over? I doubt you will like that. If you can, just buy them out and keep the house.

thank you for your inputs sir, may God bless you gan, wahrah
Have you been paying rent for using the house? Your siblings can't own a share of the property and only you and your brother will have use of it. What benefit are they currently receiving from owning part of the property?
You could reach an agreement with them to value the rental income from the property and then pay this amount after which you will receive your share of the rent (1/11th) or you could buy the property from your father's estate and then receive a share of the proceeds since it is sentimental to you.
You should not deprive your siblings of the enjoyment of the property or proceeds because it is sentimental to you.

How can I get a mortgage broker, this house buying feels like another degree sef.

Must I have the full 10 to 20% deposit before contacting a Mortgage broker?
I used land and country https://www.landc.co.uk/
It was recommended to me by the developer and I had a good experience. They did not charge me but Halifax (which they recommended as they had the lowest interest rate) charged me 1k.

Too late bro, USA was el dorado for you for 33yrs and you achieved a lot living there and in another phase of your journey in life now. That's all I'm saying, I'm not against you moving back Nigeria as I have repeatedly said here.

If you started a life in Nigeria in your current age you will never achieve what you have in the last 33yrs period .
That is not true. You are not God and do not know where he would have been. not everyone that moved abroad was jobless or poor. I came to school and was offered a job before I finished, which I took because I wanted "international experience". For a number of years and sometimes even till now I still wonder if I made the right call given where I would have been. I had a very good and high paying job which many people would literally die for. I plan o return, hopefully soon but for now, I am trying to make up lost ground.
Please don't air your opinion about someone's situation or decisions as fact because you may be wrong.

Thanks a million @RalphJean for the pointers, really helpful too. Applying to the jobs directly is another alternative to consider, I am actually looking into this for my brother who is the programmer actually if we can get an agency that would help with the job placement, also help secure accommodation etc to help him ease into a foreign country.
You typically won't deal with agencies like those in the medical profession. You have to apply for jobs yourself (even if through agencies, although some can contact you if they have suitable vacancies).
To make your task easier, go to jobserve.co.uk and search for jobs that offer sponsorship. See the screenshot below.

Hi Jamela, I just remembered this. You can apply for Civil service jobs. Have a look at the website, hopefully you can find something. They do sponsor candidates for Tier 2 visa.

First is, I just graduated from the University and started to follow the road map I designed for my life. I am hardworking, so I started doing business immediately after my defense. Interstate exports of perishables. While I was in school, I made a lot of money doing designs for students; I am a UI/UX designer. The problem here is that I can't account for all those monies I made. A lot of expenses especially for my girlfriend. Even till now, I am supposed to send her some money but will I continue like this? I need stability in my business and need to save more and need capital for the last mile logistics company I want to set up next year.

Second issue is; I recently returned from an event I attended in Lagos some days ago, I came back very late and was grossly tired. While we were chatting, she asked me some questions which I told her I was very tired and eventually, I slept off. My phone beside me till the next morning. Fast forward to yesterday, I told her of my intentions to concentrate more in building for the future - it doesn't mean our relationship would be off. She started asking questions like "do you need some space?" "Am I bugging you?" She also said I don't "speak her language enough" language here is bonding, intimacy and closure. I was surprised at her response.
To young Nigerian men out there, do not spend money on your girl friends. Occasional gifts (Christmas, birthday and perhaps valentine) is ok and there should be a limit.

Hahaha Fati wants them to beat me grin

Before now, I was travelling 2 hours to work (via train o, I wasn’t relaxed in a car). All I cared about was moving! I just couldn’t make out time to view the house- I viewed like 4 but it was interrupting my work so much, I didn’t want to look like I was an unserious person (and na contractor I be). So I just asked the guy to do video let me see; the wonderful guy now recorded only the good parts and left the bad parts. Lol.

Citizens advice will sort me out. I just want to rest this holiday first- them go see fire next year: Either the evict me, or they paint the house- I win both ways!
I hope you have sent them the pictures already otherwise they will say na you cause the damage o.

Try lyca 150 minutes for 10 pounds or register and download rebtel application and buy 5 to 7 pounds, it's for 73 minutes or so
I believe rebtel charges VAT. I used vectone for a long time before they reviewed their prices. I switched to rebtel but the VAT payment was a turn off. I now use white calling app. It's 6.5p per minute to Nigeria mobile. I just top up £5 or £10 at a time and use it for months. I have never used the bundle as I imagine it will expire after 30 days.

These days, women work to support the family, so what you are asking for is not unreasonable. I suggest you find a job that will not be too stressful then show him the employment letter. If he refuses, then he should place you on an equivalent salary to the job. You need a source of income as you do not know tomorrow. What happens if he dies (God forbid) suddenly?

From an agency. They seem to have sense but the Landlord is the one that’s acting like something is wrong with him. How can you invest in such a lovely expensive place and you don’t want to maintain the house?

So no. I didn’t physically see it before I rented. It was just not possible, my work time and my husbands couldn’t accommodate all our viewings. So I asked for a vid and the agency cleverly did not mention or show the walls and rusty toilet bowls and broken wardrobe handles.

So no agreement was made because I thought I still had the inventory week to complain about the state of the house. I honestly don’t mind fixing it up, but I told them that I’ll destroy it back when I’m leaving. I’m not a maga.
Make sure you take pictures of the current state of the house and furniture and send it to the agency before you fix anything. If you don't, they can keep your deposit and claim you damaged the house.

Paying herself from the business account is a no no. If she is audited, she may land in trouble. She and her business are separate entities. What she should do is pay herself a salary or dividend from her business account to her personal account (after deducting taxes and NI from the business income) and then pay her bills from her account.

That was an illustrationa nd nothing was wrong with it, there are people to whom that situation stated above are a true reflection of thier earning situation, Im at lost to quantify ur arguments here!
And I quoted you because it was not an illustration. You presented it as a statement of fact else you would have include words like "for example", "may" etc. But you used "IS". When you say "Kunle IS Bisi's husband" it is different from "Kunle MAY Be Bisi's husband" or "Kunle can be Bisi's husband". The first does not leave much room for any other interpretation, as you are trying to do. Okay bye.

oga you were the one that prescribed tax code for people that earn between 15k and 40k. And what I have been trying to tell you is that you cannot determine tax code purely by what you earn alone. I am glad you are gradually getting it. You just disowned your initial post up there. Okay now, please let's move on to other things since you now have gotten my point.

I'm still struggling to understand ur argument here, how and where did you get it that a person's tax code can not be 1171? and even though I was assuming up there, what's wrong in saying a person's tax code was 1171 huh huh
Oga, you wrote in English and I read in English. For emphasis:

If you earn anything from 15k to 40k and your tax code is 1171
What I am saying is the fact that you and I earn say 30k (which is within the range you quoted) does not mean our tax code will be 1171, which is what you said and that is what your statement means. If that is not what you meant, do not blame me, simply clarify and say you did not make your position clear then modify it to something like "if you earn between x and y, your tax code may be 1171."
