This is almost correct:

But "haters" should be swapped out for heeboes. Then again, the two terms are synonymous.

@ndu_chucks: It looks like this groundnut business was kind of a big deal. I recently got my hands on an book of economic data on Nigeria from 1960-1975. There was a time Nigeria was the largest exporter of groundnut in the world shocked

Crazy.

The export revenue from the groundnut was always less than that of cocoa, but the total market value of the peanut produced was higher than that of cocoa.

Very interesting stuff, to me. I'll scan a copy of these tables if I get a chance later.

That is the wonderful thing about culture and language. It is almost a living organism. Slang and terminology that was not popular 30 years ago or didn't exist 30 years ago can suddenly pop up in a second and become popular.

Buharistan (which I may have been the first to coin on this forum some months back? grin) has now spread to other Nigerian forums. Yet didn't exist in the Nigerian context before this year.

And Odechukwu has also spread even more rapidly and widely.

PS: Chukwu in this context is not your culture or language! If someone takes a word from your language and gives it a different meaning, then in that new context it doesn't belong to you. That is part of the point being made repeatedly throughout this thread.

I didn't know Chukwu would be dared to be used as a derogatory name until NL. I tolerated it long enough. Insulting God's name.
Wetin concern you who I have lived amongst? Anyway, who cares whether you think I am akata or not? As far as I know, those in my hometown and home state are the ones who get to decide who is indigenous to that territory, not any Igbos like you.

So after many years of living with Ndigbo you still don't  know that Igbos has always worshiped a monotonous God they referred as Chi or Chukwu, hence their names always starts or endswith either  Chi or Chukwu. which they do through deities before even foreign religion arrived?
As long  as I know Igbo's derisory nickname among other Nigerians is OKORO not Chukwu by any chance.
Relax. Chukwu in the context of this phrase refers to Igbo, not any god or God. That really should be the end of the matter.

I only skimmed through the article briefly, but since the Nigerian government doesn't ban or block websites, this doesn't really seem relevant?

The article is about people in the US helping Iranians get past their government's firewall and monitoring, not about the US hacking into Iranian systems or something.

It is hard for me to blame the slowness in dealing with Katrina on the state of emergency. More George Bush's incompetence (remember the birthday cake incident?)

Anyway, at least in theory (with an honest government) a declaration of a state of emergency should help rather than hurt.

The people of Bajju in Zonkwa local government area of Kaduna State have said only the creation of a new state out of the present Kaduna State will solve their marginalisation and the perennial rivalry between them and their Muslim neighbours.

In a memorandum the Bajju Development Union submitted to the judicial commission of inquiry on post election disturbance in Kaduna State in April, the group said southern Kaduna people feel marginalised in the affairs of government, including not locating any of the education and other state and federal government projects in the zone.

In the submission made by the counsel to the Bajju community, Mark Jacob, the group noted that the delineation of senatorial and federal constituencies and the siting of polling units had put the southern part of the state at a disadvantage.

It further said that a lot of arms were in the possession of individuals, groups, and communities in the country, which they use to unleash attack on innocent lives during disturbances.

The Bajju people equally identified porous borders and influx of illegal immigrants into the country, as contributory factors to post-election disturbances in the north.

According to the memorandum, "Many of the people who attack, kill, maim and destroy valuable property are mostly non-Nigerians who are brought into the country for these purposes. Most miscreants arrested during the religious or any other crises are usually non-Nigerians from neighbouring African countries like Chad, Niger, Mali, etc."

Foreign intruders

"These are a group of people who by their social status and low level of education, do not have any business being in Nigeria as they have nothing to offer to the economic growth of the country. They find it easy to migrate to Nigeria simply because they can speak Hausa and are Muslims," the group said.

On the cause of the post-election violence, the Bajju people submitted that there was massive importation of people and presence of unknown faces who were non-Nigerians in Zonkwa prior to the election, suspected to be mercenaries imported to fight the non-Muslims in Zonkwa and its environ.

"The residents of Zonkwa became alarmed and suspicious of their Muslim neighbours who were harbouring these strangers. Reports got to (the traditional ruler), Nuhu Bature, the Agwam Bajju, who in turn reported this fact to the Divisional Police Officer in Zonkwa. The DPO summoned a meeting of all ethnic communities in Zonkwa to discuss the matter, but it was too late, as fighting broke out immediately," it said.

The community called on the federal government to build a military post or detachment in southern Kaduna, adding that the Nigerian Army School of Artillery and the Nigerian Navy School of Armament Technology, currently under construction, were the only military presence in the zone.

"A permanent military detachment in southern Kaduna, preferably at the site of the destroyed market of Kafanchan town, will help to ensure peace and reduce or stop incidents of rioting. There used to be such Army detachment in Kafanchan in those days but was relocated to Keffi or Shendam," the group submitted.

Foreign Affairs › Raters Put U.s. On Notice: Moody's, S&p Sound Alarms On Debt by ektbear(op): 4:11pm On Jul 14, 2011
Credit rating agencies moved closer to an unprecedented downgrade of the U.S. government's debt amid deteriorating talks in Washington, with President Barack Obama abruptly walking out of a key meeting Wednesday with Republicans seeking a deal to raise the federal borrowing limit.

Moody's Investors Service said it was reviewing the government's top Aaa bond rating for a possible downgrade, citing the "rising possibility" that the government's $14.29 trillion borrowing limit won't be raised soon enough to prevent the U.S. from running out of money to pay its bills.

In addition, ratings agency Standard & Poor's privately has told lawmakers and top business groups it might cut the U.S. credit rating if the government fails to make any of its expected payments—including Social Security checks—even if it makes all its debt payments, people familiar with the matter said.

The rating agencies' actions highlight the potential costs of Washington's inability to reach an agreement to cut the federal budget deficit that Republicans have said is a prerequisite to Congress raising the debt ceiling. Treasury Department officials say the debt cap must be raised by Aug. 2 or they will run out of cash to pay the government's bills.

Talks to resolve the crisis hit a new low Wednesday as Mr. Obama had testy exchanges with House Republicans during White House negotiations. The president and lawmakers plan to meet again Thursday.

The S&P argument runs counter to the belief of some analysts, investors, and House Republicans who contend the U.S. can avoid a disaster if it misses some payments while staying current on those owed to bond holders. And until now, financial markets have mostly shrugged off the partisan bickering in Washington. Treasurys rallied earlier this week at a time of financial turmoil in Europe.

Still, any downgrade risks pushing interest rates higher, stock markets lower and disrupting global financial markets.

Business › Striking Workers In Ondo Threaten Cocoa Harvest by ektbear(op): 3:36pm On Jul 14, 2011
IBADAN, Nigeria, Jul 13, 2011 (Dow Jones Commodities News via Comtex) -- A strike by public-service workers in Nigeria's southwest Ondo state Wednesday grounded cocoa activities. Union leaders said the strike would continue until the state government gives in to workers' demands.

The workers are protesting against alleged government repudiation of an agreement with leaders of the Nigeria Labor Congress, or NLC, in the state to pay the workers 14,000 naira ($91.80) a month pending the time it would implement the new national minimum wage of NGN18,000 naira per month.

Bose Daramola, chairman of the Ondo state chapter of the NLC, told Dow Jones Newswires "public service workers began a strike [Wednesday]. The information I have is that there is total compliance with NLC's directive to workers to begin the strike."

Ondo state is the biggest cocoa producer in Nigeria and accounts for 40% of national production, which was forecast at 240,000 metric tons for the current year by the International Cocoa Organization.

An official of the Cocoa Association of Nigeria, or CAN, said grading of cocoa has stopped in the state because government-produce inspectors who grade and certify cocoa fit for export, joined the strike.

The CAN official said it is illegal to export ungraded cocoa from Nigeria, noting "cocoa will pile up at the grading centers if the workers don't call off the strike as soon as possible."

"There is too much rainfall now and everywhere is wet and humid. Cocoa that is delayed at the grading centers could develop mold and go bad in a short period," the CAN official added.

Officials of the state government could not immediately be reached for comment.

It is the second time in three weeks that Ondo state public service workers went on strike over the national minimum wage. The first was in late June.

Is it not obvious that in this context "chukwu" doesn't refer to God, but to Igbo people?

Given that many Igbo somehow end up with the phrase "chukwu" in their name, doesn't it seem likely that "chukwu" would end up being a reference to 'em?

The whole premise behind this is even stvpid. Let's pretend that "chukwu" also meant God in Yoruba. How many people do you think then would say that phrase? Especially given how superstitious/religious most of us are?

So it is almost immediately obvious that the phrase is not sacrilegious and doesn't refer to God, but instead refers to Igbos.

Honestly, I have no clue how this merited so much discussion.

Much ado about nothing

Again, the pronunciation stuff is not what is important. The point is that because something has a meaning in someone else's language doesn't mean it must then have the same meaning in your own.

Some appear to get this point, others do not (or don't care.)

Anyway, that is fine. It is a free world. People are entitled to say what they like.

if you don't like the phrase "odechukwu", then don't use it. Simple as that.

This is why I said you are a dunce.
Logic is beyond your capacity, mehn, try other things.

For you to start with that your argument, you have to first of all come up with other meanings of "Chukwu" in other languages before it will make sense.
As far as I know, it does not exist in Yoruba language.
I guess you've missed the point. The point is that what word X means in language Y doesn't count for anything when speaking language Z. That is the point, not whether word X also has a meaning language Z or not.

You keep exposing your "emptiness".

Is Fagbemi pronounced as gay-bemi or Fa-gbemi?
1. It depends on who is pronouncing the word. As you might know, not everyone in the English-speaking world is good at pronouncing Nigerian names.
2. In many contexts (like text and the internet, basically anywhere written), pronunciation is not relevant.

Yoruba last names like Fagbemi or Fagbenle.

Should people change their last names because "gay" means "g@y" in English?

Same deal with "Bimbo."

Leave to the english language what belongs there, don't bring those meanings into yoruba. It is silly.

Unfortunately the word ‘ode chuckwu’ means ‘dumb god’ and if you want to continue wallowing in your ignorance you are more than welcome, after all it is a free world.
Then let it be a free word and let people do what they like. Rather than trying to police the internet. Live your life and let the other man live his.
Politics › Re: What Is The Meaning Of Ode Chukwu? by ektbear: 1:57pm On Jul 14, 2011
There is bound to be some tribe or peoples on earth where even the word "ode" means "god" in their language.

Now suppose that this is the case. Does that mean you cannot use that word any more, because it is somehow insulting god?

This is getting pretty dumb here. If word X means Y in language Z, leave that meaning to language Z and don't try to bring it into your own language.
Politics › Re: What Is The Meaning Of Ode Chukwu? by ektbear: 1:51pm On Jul 14, 2011
@KnowAll: Just to be clear, I am not an atheist. . .that really has nothing to do with what I'm saying.

My overall point is that the phrase "ode chukwu" cannot be blasphemous, simply because chukwu does not mean god in yoruba. That it means "god" in Igbo is cute and interesting, but not really relevant.
