Music/Radio › Re: Nigerian "hiphop" Music Scence Is Just As Over Hyped As "nollywood" by eldee(m): 1:56pm On Feb 21, 2010
ElRazur:
How nice and very tactical. You did not argue or counter the point but then proceed to be dismissive. Oh wait, this is nairaland.
As I said, it's a problem with hiphop in general not just Nigerian hiphop.
If you think those themes are limited to the Nigerian artistes then you know fuckall bout hiphop.

ElRazur:
Did you just say someone argued in a flawed manner, and yet the best you came out with is this? Right, allow me to state further that some of us know the different between producers sound. You just gotta have an ear for it. While some individual track may sound like others, over all, people are able to and can tell the difference between a Dre beat and a that of timba for example. In dre beat, you have plenty of Keyboards and Pianos, while that of timbo have many different parts that sometimes act as fillers, but overall works as "one" in the beat. That is just some of these characteristic signature that have made these producer their defined sound.
Hold, rewind . . . 'some of us know the differences between the way producers sound'?? That's your argument??

Dre's beats have keyboard sounds. . . wow, that's quite unique!!!
Timbaland has 'different parts' . . . this is your argument??

Wiki says all songs on Relapse were produced by Eminem except Beautiful, how does that sound different from any other Dre beat??
Well let me guess, 'people like you have got an ear for it' so you'll know . . . right??

No disrespect to your craft, but I don't care bout how many production softwares you've created . . . but your argument about American producers being unique is flawed.
As I said before, in modern hiphop, Kanye, Timbaland, Jay Electronica and a few others are the recognisable ones. Producers like No ID, Pharell, Just Blaze concentrate more on making good beats that are as diverse as possible.
Hostile Gospel and My Life (both Just Blaze) sound different just the same way Blaze and Wetin Dey (Jesse Jagz)

ElRazur:
Insular? Timbo insular? Right and I do not know about Hiphop right? Way to show your knowledge. This is a guy who is a super producer and have worked from Your pop album to your indie records and along side music considered as "white music". He paid his dues, but yeah you will have something to say. Before we lose the point. The point is that No producer in Nigeria have a defined sound. No?

As for Kanye, oh please. He's work with plenty of people before he become this known kanye.
You build an argument and the you tear it apart . . . I said Timberland and Kanye sound different from everyone else and you're arguing with me.

Producers in America try to be as diverse as possible, adjusting their beats to the artistes . . . same with the ones in Nigeria.
I think it's good, infact I think it's best for hiphop that producers are flexible.

Cuzo sound just about every other "american wanna be" rapper I have heard. Please tell me am wrong. His first track "Naija girl" or something was the better of the two. The second one is just another garbage - claiming to be street smart, talk about guns and his niggers and his haters and how much he rolls in money and run the streets! Give me a flipping break. I have been listening to hiphop since the time of AfricanBambata. . . Please tell me something else.
If you think this is a problem with just Nigerian hiphop then fuck the AfricaBambata/Grandmaster Flash ish . . . you know nothing about hiphop. No offence intended.

ElRazur:
Naija hiphop scene have the right idea, but just like our nollywood, poorly executed. Most of the sound used on most naija track are straight up stock sound from programs like Fruity loops etc. Tell me which producer in naija have a defined sound? You cant miss a Dr Dre Beat, you will know a Timbaland beat or something by produced by Kanye wont go unrecognised. I listen to naija hiphop and those supposedly produced in ghana with big bucks are nothing but pop sound.
I don't know about you but I know the difference between Don Jazzy and Timbaland.
Cry doesn't sound like Swizz Beats to me. . .

You used Timbaland and Kanye, aren't they the most insular producers in America??
Dre beats are becoming less and less identifiable everyday, how identifiable are Pharell's beats these days??
Would you be able to tell from listening that Diddy produced Roc Boys??

Music/Radio › Re: Nigerian "hiphop" Music Scence Is Just As Over Hyped As "nollywood" by eldee(m): 9:09pm On Feb 20, 2010
Interesting topic, but extremely weak points to support it.
The points you listed don't hold any water.

1. Our albums sell for a dollar, so what?? Isn't that the value compared to the cost of living in Nigeria?? A bottle of coke sells for £1 in the UK, but sells for around N70 in Nigeria. We can't expect Nigerians to buy music at prices that are skyhigh compared to other commodities. . . that point is flawed.

The cd jumps?? I still have CDs I bought five years ago that work easily. Besides if you're really bothered, save your music on your laptop or buy music online.
Technology is your friend.

2. Do we actually need these big record labels
?? Haven't you seen what they did to music in America?? With artiste like Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus selling millions while the Jill Scotts and Melanie Fionas sell fuckall??
Why should we let these guys monopolise the industry when we can easily make our industry the survival of the most talented. . . in Nigeria, Modenine and M.I are releasing an album and we all know they're both highly anticipated. American music scholars will beg for a commercial battle between Mos Def and Eminem.

3. I heard MTV play Forever Young and Drake's Forever twice every fifteen minutes for a whole day, I still went out and copped Blueprint 3 and So Far Gone . . . the best songs are the album songs, you'll know that if you actually like hiphop.

4. The live shows are bad, yes, but does that take anything off Modenine'stalent?? You blame Nigerian hiphop for the problem of the organizers.
We saw what Naeto C and M.I did in Nairobi at the MAMAs when they had good organizers.

The differences between us are small compared to what we can achieve together.
D'banj, while entertaining people with his music has helped in creating a positive opinion of Nigerians to the rest of the world.

The rules are not as clear as you think.

Of course Blatter will come out to support it. . . bt at the end, they still go into their meetings and discuss these things.
How many times has he come out to support a referee on the offside rule decision only to change it the next week.
That's how football works.

@Eastbay
That's the thing . . . I'd rather get a red card than a goal too.
But did FIFA's intention include forcing someone to choose??

At the end of the day . . . the problem with Fabianski is in-house, the refree should still do what was right at the end of the day.

I don't have a problem with Porto, the problem is, this might start a precedent.
The sooner FIFA clarified the rules on in-box freekicks, the better.

Issues like 'should a keeper hold on to the ball after the referee has asked for it' and 'should a defender impede the taking of the freekick while his teammates are coming' will always remain questionable.

This is for the love of the game, not for Arsenal.

The ref wouldn't have been a factor if the 9 other players weren't strolling back instead hurrying to defend a free-kick in their 18 yard box.
Let's not even discuss Campbell/Fabianski,because their respective roles in this fiasco have been overstated.
Blame your players first before the ref.The ref is being made a scapegoat for your team's failings at the back.
If your backline were alert to their duties, the ref wouldn't be a celebrity thanks to Gunner fans.
As I said, the law protects both the weak and the strong.
The law doesn't care about how weak our backline is. . . it's simple. . . it's not FIFA's job to tell rearguards how to act, it's their job to tell the referee to do his job.
If he cannot spot a hand-volley, spot a clear penalty or interprete the law of the game properly, he should get a 9-5 job.

Tell me, what should Fabianski or Campbell have done to prevent that??
If Fabianski didn't give the ball to the referee, wouldn't that be a yellow card??
What if Campbell took the ball off the ground or tried to hold play till the Arsenal players came back, what would that be??

I can't believe the basis of your argument is that Lionel Richie and Quincy Jones are doing the remake because 'they don't want a mass exodus of Haitians to their country' . . . how daft!!!*

I would be bold and say that since Haiti is so close to the US, the fear of an exodus to their shore is very frightening to say the least. nobody would want 2/3million Haitians debarking on their beaches, would they? not in recession times like these!
Now the point of not wanting a remake because it's a classic . . . quite understandable, it's only second to Thriller.
But your point?? FLAWED and extremely daft.

If Arsenal's defending wasn't so shambolic on the free-kick,the ref guilty or not, wouldn't have been the object of this debate.
How everybody kept strolling back after a crisis situation had erupted (an in-direct kick in your 18-yard box) is another question to be asked, apart from frying Fabianski.
I thought the major priority woulda been to avoid the kick from being taken quickly.
Ref may have contributed, but it started with grade-A naivety on the Gunners part. The Porto player were never going to wait for Arsenal to forma a wall.Especially when not too many of them appeared to be in a hurry to defend the kick.
No one cares if it's East Humberside pup team or FIFA 11, you cannot do that.
