Elaineh:

My fellow F1 visa holders,

Looking for a job in this US where we dey, iss not beans o! Am currently a graduate student with a May 2012 graduate date. I'm seriously looking for a job right now because I don't feel like returning to Naija with its Boko Haram, corruption and other home-grown disasters. I'm looking for a job everywhere - online job boards, alumni networks and milking my few connections but nothing dey happen as of yet. I am facing a huge dilemna with regards to the dreaded "sponsorship" question." Will you now or in the future require H1 visa sponsorship"? Here are my arguments for and against full and honest disclosure:

Lie and say that I do not need sponsorship. Why?:
- If I tell a company that I do require H1 visa sponsorship, chances are that the company's online application system will detect that and trash my resume/application before any human being even gets to see it.
- Even if a human being gets to review my resume, if they see that I require sponsorship, they will not even give me a chance, in spite of my work experience and qualifications.

Be honest. Why?
- When the time comes for me to receive a job offer, I might be asked to show proof of work authorization. When the employer sees that I am on OPT, they will put two and two together. They might wonder why I was deceptive in the first place when asked if I would require sponsorship
- If I am hired despite my need for sponsorship, it will save me headache when the time comes for me to ask if the company is willing to put in an H1 petition so that I can continue to work at the company.

All those who are going through this process or have gone through it and somehow managed to get a job, please weigh in with advice and share your experiences!
Thenx

Mehnnnn bros/sis I feel you, I was in the same boat too almost 2 years ago, I applied like no man business, even to companies that were not in my career line. I ended up getting a job in my career path but they specifically told me I could only stay till after my OPT expired since they have never hired a non-US citizen in their company before, After my OPT expired, HR told my boss to open up my position but since my boss already got used to me and liked the fact that I work hard and do my job diligently, he went ahead to hire a lawyer to file for me (with Board approval) and that's how I got my H1B sponsored last year,

My point is persevere, Apply online and go the extra mile to call the companies if possible and speak to them. Also, conduct physical visits to potential employers, If you can get their HR contact, call, talk to the person and explain intelligently what you want. With the company I work with, I sent in my application plus reference letters even though they did not ask for it just to prove my worth,

N/B: some employers may not like the whole perseverance deal but that's what I did,

PHY,

The W-2 that was sent to you is a tax form issued by your employer and it states how much you were paid in the year. The W2 is needed in order to file your tax returns. If you are a non-resident for tax purposes, the form to fill is called the 1040NR-EZ. You fill this form if the following applies to you:

You do not claim any dependents.
You cannot be claimed as a dependent on another person's U.S. tax return
Your only U.S. source income was from wages, salaries, tips etc
Your income in the year is more than $ 3500

You can download this form from the IRS website. If you will rather use a software to make the process easier and simpler, Glacier Tax Preparation is one of the companies I know that helps with non-resident taxes. Also www.visataxes.com has a free software you could use to help fill the form and determine your tax refund/tax liability. You can fill in the online tax form, and the software generates completed Form 1040NR EZ and Form 8843

The documents needed to fill the form are
Passport with I-94 to fill Immigration related information
SSN/Tax Payers ID
W-2
Form 1042-S - Statement of Scholarship or Fellowship from the University (if applicable)
Form 1099-G - Taxable Refunds or Credits from State or Local Income Taxes (if applicable)
Form 1098E - Qualified Student Loan Interest Statement (if applicable)

Hope that helps

Femo 200, Davidylan has answered you well,

Gongo Aso, it is most likely you have been filing the wrong tax returns in your earlier years if you were on an F1 visa. The IRS usually doesnt catch it but then it will come up sometime in the future, I think the only time it may pose a problem if you filed the wrong tax returns is if you ever try to become a perm resident, THey will ask you if you filed your taxes and and they will ask you if you filed the correct tax forms, THey also verify with the IRS during that process.

Turbo tax files 1040s and almost every other free software (HR block, etc), It is ok to file a 1040 if you are a resident for tax purposes. But if you are a non resident for tax purposes you MUST file 1040NR-EZ,

Concerning filing taxes, I think I need to break this down so every international student can learn and not make the same mistake most people are making.

1) If you come into the United States on an F-1 visa, you are a non-resident for tax purposes and you are to file the form 1040 NR-EZ. This is the form you are to file for the first five years of you being on a student visa including when you are on an OPT.  Obviously, filing a form 1040 NR-EZ does not get you much of a refund as a regular 1040 that residents file but please don't get tempted to file the wrong form (1040) because it usually has repercussions if you intend to become a permanent resident down the line. Please feel free to ask me more concerning taxes and I can help to the best of my ability. I have been doing this for a while,

2)Concerning softwares for filing taxes, Glacier is a good one and usually, most schools already purchase a certain number of licenses with the company to help their international students file their taxes. But if you are on an OPT, you can still purchase an individual license with the company for $39 I think. Personally I dont think you need to pay that much. There is a website called www.visataxes.com that has a wealth of info for internationals students and taxes. They aslo have a free 1040 NR-EZ software which you can use to prepare your taxes.

3) Even if you did not make any income in one particular year, you still need to go ahead and fill out Form 8843 and mail it to the IRS center in Austin so that your information can always be up to date in their database,

There is so much more information on filing taxes for international students, So feel free to ask questions,

Mr Sodah please go ahead and delete the email as regards to the visa lottery as it is a scam.

Firstly, as of last year or so, the US immigration does not send emails to any applicant who applies for the visa lottery. If you visit their website, you will find that information. www.dvlottery.state.gov

Secondly, the results for last years visa lottery will not be available till May 1, 2012. If you get selected, you will know when you check your status online with your confirmation number. You can check your status online using the link above. They will not send you an email if you get selected for further processing and that why they strictly advise you to keep your confirmation number since that is the only way you can check your status.

Information will be provided online for further processing if you get selected and they will provide you with your selection letter and a link on instructions for obtaining your green card.

This is how it is done now so if you receive any email claiming that they are the US dept of state and you were selected, just know its false,

Hope that helps, And as earlier said, this thread is for people applying for their student visas. There should be another thread for those who played the lottery. Just use the nairaland search bar.
Family / Re: Have You Ever Been Compared With Somebody Else By Your Parents? by Elpieda: 4:37pm On Nov 10, 2011
My mum compare the relationship other daughters have with their mums with my relationship with her. She compare my younger sister to me and she even says some other women;s daughters are doing this and that to her that why don't i do the same, It used to annoy me so much that it reduced my self worth but after her doing it ever so often, I am so immune to it now and when she compares me to others I just let it go. I guess I have developed a thick skin for it. I no send again. Life is too short to dwell on that.

So I guess its normal with our parents. They are just trying to make us better people so sometimes they don't know a better way to communicate how they want us to be the greatest we can be than comparing us with our peers.
Romance / Re: Should Parents Choose Partners For Their Children? by Elpieda: 8:16pm On Nov 09, 2011
I think the choice of a life partner is an issue that has to be handled with care, patience and wisdom from above. In fact in my own opinion, this is an issue that requires God, God and God. God put our parents in our lives for a purpose and they are stewards to look after us, guide us and bring us up in the way of the Lord and once a child is brought up that way, he will not depart from that good upbringing.

Just because your father and mother chose a life partner for you or were involved in the decision making does not guarantee the marriage will last. There are so many broken marriages now and a huge number of them had parental involvement but yet it still crashed because the two people involved were not committed enough to make the marriage blossom trusting in God to help them out.

We need to listen to the advice of our parents but I think above all, if you have a solid relationship with God, he will speak to your heart and let you know the right decision to make because our parents do not take the place of God in our lives but sometimes intentionally or unintentionally, we treat our parents as our God.

No matter who you get married to in life, you will be faced with problems, trials and tribulations and one must not relax and think that all is well since mummy and daddy chose for me. NO. The bible says that those who get married will be faced with many trials. Marriage is like a professional exam you have to invest time in to be able to pass it or else if you do not invest time to study and nurture and build, then the marriage is bound to fail.

So in essence, hear your parents out and see where they are coming from and think deeply about their reasons but above all, develop a better relationship with God so that you can discern when some reasons are out of place,

OMG!OMG!!OMG!! see what the LOVE OF MONEY has done to the mentality of my people. I weep for my country. Day in day out we complain, we moan, we "pray" but yet our minds are not being renewed, it is not being refreshed, there is still so much ignorance in the mode of thinking.

We say we want a revival in the overall well being of Nigeria but we fail to realize that a revival starts within OURSELVES. If this is the way we respond to an issue as grave as this, then are we really ready for Nigeria to change. We claim to believe in God and pray to him for change but goodness gracious I wont be so surprised if God has turned a blind eye to us too based on the way we turn a blind eye to obvious criminal acts against humanity, all in the name of that thing called MONEY, and then we complain when other foreign nations tag us as fraudsters, are they far from the truth

Money will never buy you happiness, it will not buy you peace, it will not buy you a reputation, it will not buy you integrity, it will not buy you character.  We place so much value on tangibles but forget that the intangible value of character and integrity represents true wealth. That is what opens the door of favor and that is what pours out true blessings on us. I am not even responding to the posters dilemma. What amazes me most is the advice the majority of people have uttered here.

Evidently, Nigeria aint ready for CHANGE and I don't know if it will ever be,

London is quite expensive but did you really expect any different? Common jo, stop complaining and work for what you want and need.

Really Did you really say that If everyone was to think like you (and I am sure there are tons of people who still think like you which is probably why Nigeria is the way it is), then I wonder, Please learn to step out of the little box and shell you have enslaved yourself in, There is so much more to life than your petty tribalism, If you do not learn how to interact and associate with people from other cultures and regions then you will always remain myopic,

This is too stereotypical, I actually read through the whole thing trying to see if it was really accurate but none of this applies to me or the other tons on Nigerians that I know here in the States, I guess its more common among those living in the UK or something. Or maybe I just know Nigerians who are different.

That whole part about girls boning and what not just sounded weird. I only noticed that when I was living in Nigeria but as long as I have been here in the States, I have not noticed that at all, I guess its because I live in a very friendly city where we all say hi to people even if we have never seen them from Adam.

I may be wrong but the article seems too one-sided, Generalizations and conclusions made about a select few

Celebrities / Re: My Smoking Is Nobody's Business - Tonto Dike by Elpieda: 5:52pm On Sep 13, 2011
Ogugua Idolizing stars did not begin in 2011. Celebrity worship will never end and if you are waiting for celebrities to have a good head on their shoulders because of how they influence our children then you go wait tire. External influences will always be present and peer pressure will always exist, I had all that growing up but because I had parents who were involved in my life and brought me up in the way of the Lord and also developed my own sense of identity along the line, I never easily fell prey to external influences. If external influences bother people so much then you have the option of homeschooling your child, not having cable or internet in your home and having a parent stay home to raise the kids and get them actively involved in church activities, At least that's what my boss does in his own family,

Am not saying all this will shield your children from external influences but it helps them to know what and what not to copy. As a parent, also listen to the songs your kids love to listen to and learn to watch the movies they like without scolding them but maturely teaching them what and what not to accept and give them examples about your own life and dont be scared to share your mistakes with them and let them understand the consequences you had to face based on the choices you made good or bad. In the end a child will do what they want to do but trust me your impact on them and your attitude towards their upbringing will go a long way in shaping them into the people society will respect.

So if Tonto Dike is your example of a bad role model and someone not to copy, then show your kids good examples of people's live they should try to copy instead of trying to force Tonto to change her own lifestyle, Even if she changes today there will still be millions of other Tonto's or worse that people will idolizes,  Don't just say to a kid "stop listening to Justin Beiber" (wo that kid will not only listen to Justin when you are far away but will alos do the Justin Beiber hair cut follow am), tell them why they shouldn't
Celebrities / Re: My Smoking Is Nobody's Business - Tonto Dike by Elpieda: 10:59pm On Sep 12, 2011
Tonto never signed up to be any one's role model, she is an actress doing her job and making her money, If you are looking for a role model for your children and youth and you are looking up to actors and actresses in nollywood and hollywood then you need to get yourself checked, THere will always be evil in the world we live in and you cant force celebrities or anyone else for that matter to conform to your standards.

Teach your children the ways of the Lord and bring them up in the way you want them to grow and even when they watch TV and see all the evil going on in society, your upbringing will remind them of whose footsteps they need to follow in, Its is your responsibility as a parent to bring up your children the right way so that they will look at the lifestyle of people and pick the ones to emulate and the ones not too,

And if so are you wiser now for that?
Family / Re: Picture Of Young Children Hawking Moin-Moin: Child Abuse? by Elpieda: 2:31pm On Aug 31, 2011
Why would any proper thinking parent put their 5 year old young girl on the streets of Lagos or any other street for that matter to hawk and someone comes here and says its survival, If the next thing we hear on the news is that these young girls are kidnapped and sold into prostitution or that they were raped by the agberos on the street then what will you say?Do you know how damaging that is to the kid and just because it is so common doesn't mean it is ok, GOSH

Why can't the grown parents hawk themselves and leave the kids with trusted neighbors to take care of themEven if its after school hours, are they not supposed to be home doing homeworkAnd then people will now be complaining that our universities are producing half baked students, Dont you know this is how it starts?Just look at how unhappy these little girls are, They are wayyyy too young to be involved in this, I have never supported children hawking the streets and I will never support it because too many times I have seen how these  kids get mistreated,

But what can one do, The government has nothing in place to take care of the welfare of kids, We keep saying we are not like the west, we are not like the west but I think it is high time we adopt some of the things the western government do to protect the welfare of children and of citizens in general, THis should not be happening, No child should go through this, Survival my A--s--s

^^^^^^ The whole point is for him to see how it worked out. And make his valuable judgment from then on. He is a grown man so he can pick out whatever he considers relevant and leave out the rest.

I don't care how much it annoys you but when I said my parents paid, I dint want to go into details of how that happened but I will go into details.

My parents dint have the money to pay for my $23,000 tuition. They could not afford it and I could only go to the US with so much to start off with. But part of the testimony is, when my mum's friends found out i was in the states and all, they were all willing to help me out. A friend of my folks I don't really know so well paid the bulk part of my tuition. We dint ask them to but they volunteered to because of the relationship they have with my folks. That was all God working.

The point is yes his situation is different since he is married with a kid etc BUT Poster if God is for you in this, he will open doors for you that will amaze you. I am not trying to preach or anything but my success in the US is all GOD, I dont know what kind of resource you have available or who GOd has put in your life to help you but I still maintain my stand that I wont discourage you. Just do your research and trust God to direct your path. Make no decision without consulting your wife first.

Travel / Re: Should I Migrate Or Remain In Nigeria? by Elpieda: 8:30pm On Aug 25, 2011
Mr Poster I have read what everyone has said and based on people's individual experiences they have given you the best advice yet.

First of all you are married with a kid and you want to come in on a student visa, that's a big risk but I dont want to discourage you, Ill leave that aside and share my own story,

I came to the United States on a student visa to get a masters degree and while my parents were able to pay my tuition. I was single and had no commitment to no one so I basically came on a clean slate. I was told how hard it was going to be to get an on campus job but I always felt God will work something out for me. I worked 3 jobs (School Cafetaria, Desk job at the dorms, office of admissions) on campus for a max of 20hours a week and the money I got from it went towards paying my rent and my general upkeep. It was a blessing for my parents as they only had to pay for tuition. Trust me these are jobs i will normally not do if I was in Nigeria but I thank God I had that experience because not only was it a humbling experience for me, it taught me how to stand on my own and rely on no one else but God. After my first semester, I dropped two of the jobs and focused on the office of admissions job because they increased my pay to $9 an hour and gave me the 20 hours i needed in a week. Hmm that job taught me a lot as I experienced racism at its highest with my boss. But I depended on God and God alone so he saw me through that and my boss ended up loving me the most out of all the other employees.

Well fast forward some years, I was about to graduate and once you graduate, immigration lets you work for one year on the OPT. Now the major trouble started. I looked everywhere for a job but all kept wanting a US citizen or a permanent resident. Gosh I applied everywhere and even got reprimanded by some employers due to the fact they had seen my resume over and over again. All this while I never really considered moving back home. But I serve a living GOd and all through my search I cried unto Him because in my heart I knew I wanted to continue on in the US. Well God showed himself strong and on the day of my graduation, I got hired by a very popular Bank and was hired in their Internal Audit department. The pay was good and I dint even know how to start thanking God. THey told me they will only be able to keep me for one year as they have never sponsored any non citizen before. Inf act I was the first non us citizen they hired.

Fast forward,  after my OPT expired, that same bank that said they will never sponsor me, sponsored my H1B visa and it got approved. They also increased my salary by $3000 in the space of a year. I still work with them but probably not for long because I will be getting married soon to the man who has been with me all through this period of trials, tribulations and joys and laughter and we are moving to a different state to a better job.

Well I know story story, But the reason why I shared this is because some have it rough and some have it good. DO your research before you make a move especially considering the fact you have a wife and kid.  Don't make any hasty decision and if you are meant to relocate then things will fall in place but if not then those doors wont open for you. Pray hard and ask God to direct your path. No one should tell you no and no one should tell you yes, I cant even do that because I do not regret one bit my decision to come to the US but that doesn't mean you will have the same experience. It wasn't rosy but with God on my side he showed me that it doesn't matter where you are in the world. As long as you are in tune with him, he will make a way and direct your path. But like I said, thats MY own experience.

Food / Re: Nigerian Girls And Their Horrible Cooking by Elpieda: 8:51pm On Aug 22, 2011
Cooking does not define a woman. I agree BUT just as a masters degree is an added boost to your career, so is knowing how to cook and added boost to your womanhood. It just adds more to completing you as a woman. Yeah its not the end all be all defining factor for one to consider before getting married but it just goes to show how domesticated you are.

Imagine if a woman not only has a Bachelors degree and masters degree and working in a good company etc, but also knows how to take care of the home front and keep things tidy and is a great cook. Blessed is that woman and worthy to be praised,

Is your wife working? Do you already have an apartment? If so, How much is your rent or have you put the required upfront payment? If not where do you live at the moment? How much is your electric bill if you pay that?

Create a honest budget for yourself and your wife and attach figures to it. Some people have helped you to break that down. I believe so much in creating a budget and monitoring you income and expenses judiciously. Thats what I always do since am an accountant.

If your wife is working that helps a great deal as you will both be able to combine your income and determine your expenses. Here is a guide I developed to help you breakdown your income into what is really necessary. You can tweak it however you want based on your scale of preference.

                                                                  Amount                                               Amount
INCOME                                                                  N                                                        N
Husband's Monthly Pay
Wife's        Monthly Pay
Combined Total Income (A)

EXPENSES (Fixed Payments)
Housing
Electricity and Water (Utilities)
Car Insurance- If any
Phone Bill( recharge cards)
Transportation
Tithes (If any)

Combined Total Expenses (B)

Income left over (A-B)

Savings and Investment

Income after Savings (D)

Dining- Eating Out/Date Night
Entertainment- Movies (silverbird cinema etc)
Groceries- Food
Groceries- Personal Items (toiletries, lotion, etc)
Shopping- Clothes, shoes, accessories
Home improvement- décor, kitchen stuff, etc
Miscellaneous- mani and pedi, hair maintenance, car accessories, car wash, books, etc

Income after budgeted monthly spendings (E)

Net Income (Left Over D-E)

Anything is possible,  Yeah its good to have a good source of income but then we still have people who marry rich but then go through some kind of financial breakdown and go back to square one. If you have a prudent wife then i think you are cool.

I guess its just because I look very pretty in African clothing.

Nigeria Nigeria Nigeria,

Nigeria, a country with filled with lots of talents, Name the profession and we have them there. Doctors, lawyers, forensic accountants, all classes of engineers, architects, computer scientists, programmers, web designers, event planners, top fashion designers, pharmacists, economists, cosmetologists, surgeons, lab technicians, scientists, Name the profession and I can bet with all of my being that we have highly skilled and knowledgeable people in that area,

But wait, something keeps holding us back, something keeps dragging us down, something keeps hindering us from moving forward, something keeps stopping us from maximizing our greatest potential. We go around in circles searching for answers but we cannot seem to find answers, We play the blame game but still our country is not where it should be and not achieving what it should. Why

I am not so sure but the little I know is this,  A country does not exist without its people. A people without a good leader is not a people. If the head is sick then the whole body cannot fully function but when the head is well then the whole body is alert and ready to take on its responsibilities for the day. I think we need a new set of leaders because no matter how much anyone tries to contribute to the development or progress of the country, if that development is met with closed doors from the top decision makers then there is no way one can move forward.

A man I know came up with an idea to offer free medical care to certain local government areas in his community and he brought his proposal to the governor of the state to get support and funding in order to implement his ideas which he had already practiced for about 2 months. Till date, the decision makers are yet to attend to that proposal.

So the talent is available, the ideas are there, the skills are in abundance, yet we are still frustrated, go figure.

^^^ Yours is a touching story and i sympathize with you. However I dont think  its always the case that when an adoptee finds out he/she is adopted, he/she will end up acting out and reacting in a negative way.

I think the earlier you let the child know (as young as possible) the better, so they dont end up feeling you have been lying to them all these years.  All my friends who are adopted knew of their adoption right from the get go, There was no hiding nothing from them despite the circumstances under which they were adopted. One thing I notice though that no matter how much love is shown by your adopted parents, there will still always be a quest to know who your biological parents are and I think that's a valid quest. Its a blood connection with your biological mum that cant really be explained. Most of my adopted friends ended up knowing who their biological mums were later on in life and that was just to fulfill some inner void that they could not explain. They still end up remaining with their adopted parents and acknowledging them as the ones who raised them and helped them become who they are.

It works differently fro different people but I still advocate for letting t=your adopted child know as soon as possible, But I get, naija culture does not help matters at all when it comes to adoption and I wont be surprised if that's the reason why it ends up turning sour, Unnecessary lack of openness and communication.

^^^ Exactly Bukkites. My boss threw a welcome home party when he had his son same with some of my other coworkers. One of them even had a baby shower thrown for he and his wife when they brought their newly adopted 1year old child to work. Usually the circumstance of adoption is a case of a young mother of about 15 having a baby and not able to take care of the child because the real mum is still trying to get her life together with regards to high school and some already have a child previously so an extra is too much to handle and so they give the baby up for adoption. The adopted child should know all this and should be reassured of your constant love for him/her. Just because the child is not biologically yours doesn't mean you cannot love that child and get attached to the child and give the child the necessary care he needs. It may be a bit difficult but it is doable

Its sad that the Nigerian culture still holds a lot of reservations when it comes to adopting children and so parents will always prefer to hide that fact from their adopted children and deal with it much later if it ever comes out,

My mentality about adoption is so different now after staying in these zones for a while now especially with the fact that my boss has an adopted son who he loves to death. He adopted his son as a baby and I asked him if his son knows he is adopted. His son is 3 years old now but he said his son knows he is adopted. The adoption agencies even advice its better the parents are as open about it as possible. I totally agree with that and in my opinion as soon as the kid is able to understand, that kid should know he is adopted. My boss treats his son so well and he doesn't hide it to anyone that he adopted him.

Adoption is a regular process here. Infact most of my coworkers have adopted kids and some even went as far as china to adopt kids. It is not a shameful thing here to adopt but its infact seen as an act of kindness and very noble rather than a stigma of infertility on the couples. Hence I know a lot of couples who are close to me that have their biological children but still went ahead to genuinely adopt other children because a lot of these kids may not grow up to have a better life otherwise.

Dear Mr Allanohize,

Any other comment after yours is pretty much irrelevant, Infact this thread should have been closed and sent to the recycle bin after your comment,

God bless you for your words of wisdom and I hope people will learn from it and realize that marriage is a great risk, You can only reduce the odds of your marriage not folding up prematurely by getting help from the very ONE who created the institution of marriage and reading his 'manual' on "how to use"

God bless us all
