The Lagos State Police Command has arrested some members of the Oodua Peoples’ Congress (OPC) after they were busted operating a torture chamber and shrine located under the Opebi link bridge.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal ordered the destruction of the shrine and three men were reportedly arrested in the process, Vanguard reports.

Edgal, who led detectives to the shrine yesterday said the operators carry out trial on their victims and declare judgment against them. According to him, going by the items found in the shrine, some of the victims were tortured to force them to own up to a particular crime they are being tried for.

He said three persons were arrested for their alleged involvement in activities around the shrine, while three POS machines allegedly being used to extort money from victims were recovered. Aside the three POS machines, other items found at the shrine included mobile telephones and ATM cards belonging to some victims.

Addressing newsmen at the scene, Edgal said some officials of the Lagos State Neighbourhood Security and Safety Corp (LSNSC) had informed the command of the suspicious movement of people in and out of the shrine.

He said based on the strength of the information, he directed the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Ikeja division to investigate the matter.

“Based on the directive, a team of undercover policemen led by the DPO mounted surveillance around the area. Yesterday (Monday) officials of the Neighbourhood Security Safety Corps saw a man who was being dragged into the shrine.

They were attracted to the place by the screaming, which they heard coming from the victim. They quickly informed the DPO who moved his men to the scene where three persons were arrested and the victim rescued.

“In as much as we believe in community policing and community partnership, let me sound a note of warning to any group of persons who may want to take laws into their hands that the command will deal decisively with members of such groups.

“Members of OPC have been helpful to the command in the past. We see them as partners, but as you can see, some group of persons under the guise of OPC have erected an office under the Opebi link bridge where they take people to try them by ordeal.

They also have a shrine here where I believe they force victims to take oath. We will not tolerate this in any part of the state.

“Three persons have been arrested. One of the victims was freed. We are investigating and all those behind this barbaric act will soon be rounded up. When they are arrested they will be made to face the wrath of the law,” he said.

Some auto technicians who operate under the Opebi link bridge said the operators arrest and tortured their victims openly.

The mechanics who do not wish to be named said the operators open up case files for complainants after which the persons being accused is dragged before the shrine.

According to them, victims are adjudged guilty even before trial begins and confessions are forced during torture.

The Lagos police boss added that those arrested are being questioned at the command’s headquarters and that at the end of investigation, the command would be able to unravel the activities that went on around the area.

He queried the rationale behind the move by the suspected OPC members saying that nobody or group of persons is allowed by law to detain a person.

“As a law abiding citizen, you are only allowed to arrest and after which the suspect is handed over to the police who have the constitutional responsibility to investigate and after which charge the suspect to court.

“What is POS machine doing inside their office. Investigation has revealed that some robbers go about with POS machine. They make their victims transfer money into their account at gunpoint.

We are going to be thorough in our investigation. We won’t allow any miscreant to run amok in Lagos. I have also ordered that the shrine and the office be demolished,” he added.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Command in Adamawa says some youth in the state now utilises human urine to intoxicate themselves.

The state commander of agency, Mr Yakubu Kibo made this known Tuesday in Yola in his speech to mark the 2018 UN International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

Kibo said other new items abused include dry pawpaw leaves, dry plantain leaves, burnt tyres, as well as a solution made from tom tom sweet and lacasera drink, Guardian reports.

“It is important for parents to know and pay attention to the recently discovered substances of abuse like dry paw paw leaves, tom tom in lacasera drink, 10 days old human urine, methylated, spirit in coke drink, dry plantain leaves, burnt tyres among others,” he said.

While describing drug abuse as a rampaging fire that does not discriminate, Kibo called for collaborative effort to create a drug free society.

“For the drug war to be successful, the supply and demand reduction must go hand in hand.

“To that effect, from January to date, the Adamawa command has seized 2,742.358 kg of assorted illicit drugs,” he said.

Kibo said the seized drugs included cannabis sativa, tramadol tablets, cough syrup with codeine, diazepam tablets, exol-5, pentozocine injection and codeine tablets.

He also said that a total of 67 suspected drug dealers were arrested within the period under review out of which 26 were convicted and sentenced to various jail terms.

In areas of counseling and rehabilitation, Kibo said 20 drug addicts were counseled and rehabilitated within the year.

He listed lack of operational vehicle, inadequate staff, poor funding and hostilities by some communities as the major challenges facing the agency in the state.

“Where are you now?” Dammy asked for the umpteenth time, growing impatient.
“I’m close. Just two bus stops away.” I responded, not wanting her to panic.
The truth was that I had arrived the spot I wanted her to be, along with Mummy Mo and Ozone. We just needed one more person to complete the plan – Dammy’s brother, Ola.

So, I called and asked him to quietly leave the house without telling anyone.
In a few minutes, he had arrived and the plan was for him to call Dammy and say he had just been arrested by The Police and that she should come quickly to the bus stop (where we were all waiting).
Ola called, but Dammy wouldn’t leave the house. Partly because she didn’t believe her brother at first, and also because she was waiting for me.
The plan was failing.

So I called her again to lie and push her out of the house.
“Hello Dammy, I’m very close. The bike I took fell due to the slippery road. I’m trying to clean up, but I am coming still.”
She panicked further, but I assured her I would be fine.
That was the cue to get her out of the house since Ola wouldn’t stop buzzing her phone.
Mummy Mo was to wait by the junction and be the one to see Dammy; Ozone, Ola and I were to hide somewhere close.

Mo was to see Dammy and make it look like a coincidence, start small talks to distract her, and the rest of us would appear behind them to catch Dammy by surprise.
It was looking all set, until Dammy arrived.

The poor girl was more concerned about her brother who was being harassed by the police than meeting any friendly looking stranger at the bus stop. �
She acknowledge Mo from a distance, but wouldn’t wait to talk; she wanted to see her brother first. So, she went further down the street in frantic search.

That was not the plan.
Quick thinking was needed. The only way to calm her down was to release her brother from hiding and bring her back to the spot we wanted her to be.
Ola went after her and told her another lie – saying the policemen decided to let him go after begging.

Dammy calmed, and was ready to receive Mo. She gave her a big hug when they returned to the junction and got into small talks about what Mo had come to do in their area all the way from Lagos.
That was my cue.
Question popped, we said YES!
…right at the place where I first met her physically in 2013!

Phillipines President Rodrigo Duterte has sparked controversy in the predominantly Catholic country for calling God stupid, but his spokesman has defended the contentious statement as his personal belief.

Duterte made the statement on Friday evening during a speech in his southern home city of Davao, where he questioned God’s logic in the Biblical creation story of Adam and Eve.

“Adam ate (the fruit of knowledge), then malice was born. Who is this stupid God?” he said.

“That son of a b***h is stupid if that’s the case. You created something perfect and then you think of an event that would tempt and destroy the quality of your work.”

Duterte also questioned the rationale of original sin, noting:

“That was your mother and father’s deed — you weren’t born yet, but now you have original sin. What kind of religion is that? I can’t accept it.”

Amid criticisms over Duterte’s statements, presidential spokesman Harry Roque urged the public to accept that the leader tends to use strong language when he expresses his beliefs.

“That is the personal belief of the president,” Mr Roque said. “We are free to believe in religion and we are also free not to believe in religion. The President has his personal spiritual beliefs.

“We cannot fault the president if he has no sense of hypocrisy and we should accept that because even when he was just a candidate, he never hid that from us.”

Duterte has in the past lambasted the Catholic Church in the Philippines, where more than 80 per cent of the population practices the religion, calling priests out for allegations of corruption and sexual abuse.

An unlucky England football fan travelled thousands of miles to the World Cup in Russia - only to realise he left his ticket at home and miss the country's big win.

Douglas Moreton is now in Nizhny Novgorod, Western Russia where he expected to attend the England v Panama match - but he left the ticket in a drawer.

Devastated Douglas launched an appeal to anyone who might be willing to give him a spare ticket.

He bumped into ITV News editor Dan Howells who was staying in the same hotel as him at the time.

Dan took pity on the ill-fate supporter and tweeted out an appeal to his followers in the hope someone might help.


Dan tweeted:

"This is Douglas. He was at our hotel in Volgograd. We've just bumped into him in Nizhny Novgorod & he's realised he's left his match tickets in the drawer at home in Bristol. If anyone's got a spare on let me know. "

Since launching the appeal yesterday, the ITV News editor managed to find a spare ticket for the football fan.

Douglas had journeyed more than 2,000 miles to join in England's World Cup glory - which saw our side win 6-1.

Dan updated his followers saying:

'I’m afraid he only got back to his hotel 40 mins before kick off. Couldn’t get to the stadium in time to pick the ticket up.'

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA has revealed that its agency arrests no fewer than 880 motorists daily over breach of traffic rules.

Mr Chris Olakpe, LASTMA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, told NAN in Lagos that each of the 44 zones of LASTMA made no fewer than 20 arrests daily.

“When we are talking of arrest, it is a daily occurrence; we have about 44 zones of LASTMA, and not less than 20 arrests are made daily by each of the zones.

“The arrests are done by serving court summons on erring motorists,’’ Olakpe said.

According to him, mobile courts hear and determine the cases and give fines.

He said that LASTMA had established a protocol of arrest to ensure that arrest were made in a polite manner.

“No Nigerian citizen will like to be arrested without resistance; it is worse with commercial drivers in Lagos. This poses a challenge to us.

“In fact, it a herculean task. As you raise a hand to stop them, they put their vehicles in reverse; in the process of trying to escape, they hit vehicles behind them.’’

On commercial motorcyclists plying highways, Olakpe said that the agency was working with the police to carry out enforcements.

On alleged extortion and selective arrest by the agency's personnel, the chairman said that discussions were ongoing to ensure that erring personnel would be punished.

“We are creating a spotlight and investigating the allegation,” he said.

The agency boss also mentioned that the agency had warned its personnel against jumping into vehicles they intended to arrest.

He said that LASTMA would punish personnel doing so.

Heung-Min Son could not hold back the tears as he met with his country's President Jae-in Moon at the dressing room after their World Cup match against Mexico, which they lost.

The Tottenham ace was in floods of tears on the pitch after Saturday’s 2-1 defeat by Mexico wrecked his nation’s hopes.

Son regained his composure but the waterworks opened up again when he walked into the dressing room and saw South Korea president Jae-in Moon consoling his players.

Striker Son said:

“I really didn’t want to cry but after I saw my team-mates in there, I couldn’t stop.

“I feel sorry for them, especially those who were having their first World Cup. They did a great job.”

Nollywood actress Wumi Toriola recently called out colleague Toyin Abraham for saying getting married and buying a car were not achievements. It will be recalled that Toriola had recently got married and bought a car.

However, she has since apologised to Abraham.

In a chat with Sunday Scoop, Toriola revealed what initially led to a thaw in their once cosy relationship.

She said:

“After we shot Alakada Reloaded, we were in a hotel room and she slapped me. I was very angry and I would have hit her back if not that I loved her. After she slapped me, I walked out and went to another room. The following day, I expected her to apologise to me but she just told me to bring her belongings in my car. She was not apologetic at all.

“Before I got home that day, she had also told other people that she slapped me and I was upset that she was even proud of what she did to me. Because of that, I made a video on Instagram and I told her never to repeat such act; I just wanted her to feel sorry about her action. She then called some elders in the industry and those ones prevailed on me to bury the hatchet. So, I deleted the post online.

Maintaining that she wasn’t taking sides with either Toyin Abraham or Mercy, Toriola said:

“I wasn’t trying to take sides; both Mercy and Toyin are colleagues. I used to be close to Toyin but not anymore. Concerning my post, most of our followers are the ones who cause issues. Someone said marriage is not an achievement and it got on my wrong side.

We come to life to have families and build a home to make them happy; I feel those are the priorities of life. So, I reacted to the fact that someone was trying to cheapen my efforts. That was what I reacted to but people thought I was taking sides with Mercy. The whole thing started when I congratulated Mercy on her new house.

I feel there is too much hate and jealousy in our industry. The only thing I did wrong was allowing my emotions get the better of me. Sometimes, we forget out status in the society but that has been corrected. I have apologised for using derogatory words on Toyin and she accepted my apology. I feel from there, we can move on. Nollywood actress, Cossy Ojiakor, was in the news some days back over an alleged assault she suffered in the hands of her neighbour whom she claimed is always beating his wife and daughter.

On that particular day, the actress stated that she saw the man beating his wife and child and she tried to intervene. According to Cossy, the man also assaulted her in the process.

Giving an update of the incident to Sunday Scoop, she said:

“I have gone to the police station and from there, I went to the hospital to get my injuries treated. However, his wife and daughter, who also sustained injuries, haven’t been to the police station and the hospital. I reported a case of assault at the police station and some officers followed me to his house to arrest him but he hid. He will surely be brought to book.

“He has been doing it for a while. I decided to speak out this time because I was personally involved. I don’t care if their marriage breaks because I went public with the information. As a concerned neighbour, I can even provide the wife accommodation. This is no longer a case of domestic violence because he also assaulted me. I have been feeling pain all over my body, even the butt that I recently spent money on.”

Disputing the claim that the woman couldn’t leave simply because she was attracted to the man’s wealth, Ojiakor said:

“When they got married, they had nothing. The woman actually bought a property in her name and they now use it together. They actually worked together to get all the property they own now and I am not sure that he would release any to her. If she leaves him now, she will have to start her life from scratch and I think that is why she has been afraid to quit the marriage after giving 12 years of her life to him.

“In the Nigerian situation, it is the woman that usually suffers. I grew up in an abusive home because my father used to assault my mum; so, I know what it feels like. But he never touched us, the children.

That’s why I was enraged when this man hit his daughter. I know so much about them because I was a bridesmaid at their wedding. He only had a weather-beaten Benz in those days and the vehicle even refused to start on the day of their wedding. We are good neighbours and the man is actually nice but for his terrible habit of battering his wife.”

On her intention to remain single or a baby mother, Ojiakor said:

“A lot of men have proposed to me, and they had said I would have to stop posting pictures on social media or that I’d have to stop acting. Whenever I hear things like that, I run. My life is simple as a single lady; I can decide to clean my house or cook whenever I want to. However, when you marry, you basically turn to a slave.”

Explaining the kind of relationship she had with her dad, Cossy said:

“It was a love-hate relationship. I hated him for beating my mum and I loved him for being my dad. If there were channels for me to report him back then, I would have done that.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s wife, Sara, has been charged with fraud over the alleged misuse of state funds in ordering food at their official residence.

The indictment charged that Mrs Netanyahu, along with a government employee, fraudulently obtained more than 100,000 dollars for hundreds of meals supplied by restaurants, bypassing regulations prohibiting the practice if a cook is employed at the home.

Sara denied any wrongdoing.

She was charged with fraud, breach of trust and aggravated fraudulent receipt of goods, according to the indictment released by the Justice Ministry to the media.

If convicted, she could face up to five years behind bars.

The Israeli prime minister, who himself is embroiled in a series of corruption investigations, has called the allegations, against his wife, absurd and unfounded.

Sara Netanyahu’s lawyers said the indictment was “ludicrous.’’

They said in a statement that others had ordered the meals and that the restrictions on ordering food were invalid.

“There was no fraud or breach of trust or fraudulent receipt of items or any other offence.

“The prime minister’s wife, who is not a public servant, did not know the procedures and was found to have spoken truthfully when answering questions during a lie detector test,’’ the statement said.

Sara, 59, has inspired a multitude of headlines in the past over what family spokesmen call an undeserved reputation for imperiousness.

It seemed unlikely the latest case could cause significant political damage to her husband, now in his fourth term as Israel’s leader and riding high in opinion polls despite the allegations against him.

A 13-year-old girl, Nozipho Sibanda, has been honored by the National Railways of Zimbabwe for averting a train disaster that could have killed at least 300 people when she was only 12.

Sibanda, a form one pupil of Entumbane High School in Zimbabwe, saw a broken railway line in Sawmills last September, an hour before a Bulawayo-bound train from Victoria falls was set to pass.

The girl rushed to inform the station manager at Sawmills railway station and station manager stopped the train that was due to pass on that track within an hour. At the time, she was a 12-year-old Grade Seven pupil at Sawmills Primary School, reports Bulawayo24.

In appreciation of her life-saving act, last Friday the NRZ went to her school and committed to pay her school fees until she completes secondary school. The NRZ also guaranteed her a place at its training school in Bulawayo should she wish to be enrolled there.

NRZ Regional Marketing Manager Mr Joseph Temai commended Nozipho for her sense of responsibility.

He said:

“She saved over 300 lives in a passenger train that was coming from Victoria Falls to Bulawayo. She did something that some adults may have failed to do. As part of our whistleblowers’ programme, we decided to give her a small token of appreciation as a gesture to show gratitude to her family and her school for cultivating such good habits in a child.”

It was midweek in the morning and she was on her way to school. She noticed that part of the railway line was broken and she went to notify the station manager before going to school. It shows the kind of family and home that she was brought up in.”

Mr Temai said property worth millions of dollars were saved and the lives of about 300 passengers were spared because of Nozipho’s act.

Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun has opened up on an encounter with a witch who put him on the path to reconnect to Nigeria and play for the national team.

Born to a Nigerian father and a German mother, Leon Balogun was born and brought up in Germany with little knowledge about Nigeria.

In a piece for The Players’ Tribune, the Super Eagles defender opened up how he made the journey to reconnect to Nigeria.

The 29-year-old told the story of how his sister led him to see a witch who diagnosed a hole in his aura and how he was still hurting from the death of a loved him.

The loved one turned out to be his grandmother from Nigeria, whom he never met before she died.

“I was amazed. I hadn’t thought about my grandma that much since she passed when I was 16 years old,” the Brighton & Hove Albion defender wrote on his piece for The Players’ Tribune.

“But, this lady was right. My grandma’s death had a huge effect on me, and I had never even met my grandma, who lived in Nigeria. That’s the part that was wild to me.

“This woman, though, she saw it. She told me I had to heal my soul, my heart before I could become the player I wanted to be.

“After we left, I didn’t completely understand if my experience with her was successful. The most important thing that came out of that day was that it got me thinking about my grandma. When I got home, my mind went straight back to the day my dad told me the news.

“Because I had never met her, my dad didn’t tell me right when it happened. He actually waited a few days — that’s how distant my relationship was from her. She only spoke Yoruba. So when we talked on the phone when I was little, my dad would try to translate for us. He had never taken me to Nigeria, for reasons he didn’t make clear to me, and I only ever saw photos of my grandma.”

The grief he felt over the death of his paternal grandmother led him to know more and reconnect with his Nigerian roots.

Reconnection with Nigeria
The reconnection was complete when in 2014 he received a call from the Super Eagles boss Stephen Keshi which turned out to be an invitation to the national team.

“Even after I overcame some of the injury issues I had as a teenager and began playing regular minutes in the 2. Bundesliga and Bundesliga, that thing — the part of my soul that I had been told to heal all those years ago — was still missing from my life,” the defender further wrote in the piece.

“In 2014, I was coming to the end of my contract with Fortuna Dusseldorf. I wasn’t sure where I would go next. There was uncertainty in my life, and from time to time I would think of the witch. What did she mean, ‘heal my soul?’

“One night in March, my phone rang. It was a Nigerian number … it was Stephen Keshi, the Nigerian National Team manager. I was sweating as soon as he introduced himself. I wanted him to say the words I had thought about for so long. He spoke for awhile about how he wasn’t totally familiar with me, but he liked how I played.

“Then he said it: ‘I would like to invite you to be a Super Eagle’.

“Those words … they meant so much to me. It meant validation for every step of my footballing journey. It meant happiness for my family. Most of all, it meant an opportunity to go to Nigeria.

And that … that was everything to me.”

A man identified as Taofeek Sosanya has been reportedly stabbed to death at his friend’s house causing detectives from the homicide section of the Lagos State Police Command to launch an investigation into his murder.

The deceased Sosanya, 28, had reportedly gone to the said friend’s place to celebrate the Eid el-Fitr, in hopes of returning to his base in Ogun State on Monday.

Sunday night, he went outside his friend’s house to receive fresh air outside after power outage and slept off in the process.

Someone reportedly raised alarm after unknown armed persons invaded the area killing Sosanya in the process.

The Lagos State Police public Relations officer, CSP Chike Oti, who confirmed the incident said investigation into the matter had begun.

“Policemen visited the scene and removed the corpse, which was deposited at the Mainland morgue for autopsy.” he said.

The Senior Pastor of the Peniel Church of God in Calabar, Apostle Essien Ayi, has reportedly donated a sum of N1 million to facilitate the completion of a central mosque and Islamic Centre in the Cross River State capital.

According to The Nation, the cleric who represents Akpabuyo/Bakassi/Calabar-South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, said Nigerians should be their brothers’ keepers, irrespective of religion.

The federal lawmaker, who made the cash donation at Gbogobiri, a Hausa settlement in Calabar, said the gesture was also to appreciate the support he has enjoyed from them.

He said:

“Every human being whether Christian or Muslim believes in God, the creator. The religion may be different. The mode of practicing may be different, but it is tilted towards one being, which is God.

“Also the Muslim society has been very supportive of me right from when I was chairman and they informed me that their former mosque had been demolished and they are trying to erect a new and befitting mosque.

"I feel as a representative, they too are my constituents. I am bound to make a token donation towards the completion of that mosque. We should be be our brothers’ keepers. We are all Nigerians irrespective of our religion.”

Head of the Hausa Community, Sarki Lawan, who spoke through the Secretary of the Mosque Committee, Hashimu Abubakar, expressed gratitude for the N1 million donation, which he said would go a long way in the completion of the project.

“We are very happy. We appreciate his concern about coming here to give us his donation. This is the first time it has ever happened. He donated N1 million and we assure him the money would be put to use. The name of the mosque is Central Mosque and Islamic Centre in Calabar.

“Work started about four months ago and the money would help us a great deal. Our message to other politicians is to emulate what he has done so that the people they are representing would feel their impact,” he said.

American billionaire Bill Gates joined the rest of the world to celebrate their fathers on Father's Day yesterday.

The 2nd world’s richest man took to his Instagram page to celebrate his dad, William Henry “Bill” Gates, on Father’s Day and called him the real "Bill Gates.

He shared the photo above with him and wrote:

‘My dad and I share the same name. After starting Microsoft, people used to ask him if he was the real Bill Gates. I always hope he says, “Yes.” I hope he tells them that he’s all the things the other one aspires to be. Happy #fathersday to the real Bill Gates.’

South Korean coach at the Russia 2018 World Cup, Shin Tae-yong hopes his side's first World Cup opponents will be hampered by not being able to distinguish between several of his players.

South Korea hope to have kept their tactics against Sweden a surprise by swapping shirt numbers in recent training sessions and matches, coach Shin Tae-yong has said.

Shin's men kick off their World Cup campaign in Nizhny Novgorod on Monday in what has been described as a must-win match, with Mexico and Germany the other opponents in Group F.

Players have been seen wearing different numbers during preparations for the finals in Russia and Shin says it was a deliberate ploy to confuse any Sweden scouts ahead of the match.

'We know this is a major tournament at a single location and it is very much likely your opponents will send out scouts to spy on your team. We have made preparations for them and we are capitalizing on the fact that our players look alike and so they switch numbers on every training day.

Head coach of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr has insisted that playing a three-man defence against Croatia was not the best decision.

Gernot Rohr was reacting to criticisms surrounding his choice of 4-2-3-1 formation for the 2-0 defeat to the Europeans in their Group D opener on Saturday night.

Former Nigeria captain, Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha questioned the decision of the coach not to go with a 3-5-2, which has suited the team best in friendly games.

However, Gernot Rohr has argued that they did not concede in open play, so the blame cannot be on the system.

“We didn’t concede in normal play, we conceded only two goals from set pieces. This is not a question of tactics or system. Our system was okay, we cannot play with three (at the back) when there is only one centre forward.

“We played with four defenders because there were three Croatian strikers who are very strong. I was satisfied with the organisation of the team but what we missed in the game is being professional from set pieces. Each game is different. We know we can play with three centre backs but it was not a good day (Saturday) to do that,”
