If there is an eye witness account, then it should be followed by a forensic, if proved, the woman only has to face charges on traffic violation only. The deceased lastma official may actually be chasing another traffic offender before the incident happened. lekki/Ajah axis is prone to traffic violation more than any other road in Lagos apparently due to the heavy traffic and no alternative routes.

If she was driving recklessly and they were trying to catch up with her and in the process, the LASTMA officer was hit by a bus, she is then responsible for the death of the LASTMA officer. Actually, that is what driving against traffic (one way) leads to. Because you must be insane to be driving against traffic. It is a suicide mission and also endangers the lives of other drivers. While I still feel sorry for her and her family, I consider that she must be literate enough to know that she had committed an offense/crime, stay cool and get the booking. Rather than flee the crime scene. Running away from a crime scene would only get you to commit another crime. Her actions led to the death of the LASTMA officers whether is was her vehicle or some other person's vehicle.

We all need to be careful, respect traffic rules and learn from this.

Yinka Johnson, the female banker, who was arrested on Friday by the police for allegedly crushing an official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority to death while driving against traffic, has said the alleged crime was a frame-up.

The General Manager, LASTMA, Mr. Babatunde Edu, had told SATURDAY PUNCH that Johnson crushed the LASTMA official, Ahmed Balogun, while trying to evade arrest in the Ajah area of the state.

Edu alleged that Johnson ran from the scene of the incident immediately into Ikota Estate, Ajah, where she was later arrested by policemen attached to Area J Command.

However, Johnson told SUNDAY PUNCH that she did not hit the LASTMA official, adding that it was another vehicle that ran over Balogun.

Johnson, who is an employee of Stanbic IBTC, is being detained along with her three-month old baby, Deborah.

Although she admitted to driving against traffic, she said where Balogun was crushed was a few metres away from her vehicle, adding that there were no blood stains on her car.

She said, “I was driving on Lekki-Epe Expressway trying to navigate to the other side of the road when I was accosted by a LASTMA official.

“The path I took was a one-way road but residents of Ikota Estate usually take it because of the ongoing road reconstruction on the alternative road.

“While I was discussing with the LASTMA official, a vehicle crushed another official a few metres away, causing commotion.”

Johnson said she did not run away from the crime scene as it was not far from her home but instead, alighted from her car during the pandemonium and called her husband.

According to her, after the LASTMA officials drove her car way, she went to the police station with her husband to report the incident.

She added that upon getting to the station, she saw her vehicle and learnt that the matter had been reported to the police.

She said, “When I got to the police station, the area commander immediately took over the case and took me to the office of the commissioner of police. I heard the state governor had already told him about the case

“When I narrated my ordeal to the CP, he did not believe my story. He immediately ordered that I should be taken to the SCID.”

A relative of the victim, who craved anonymity, said the police was biased with investigations. He said because the state government was aggrieved, it was trying to punish Johnson even though the real suspect was still at large.

Due to the sensitive nature of the case and the minor involved, Project Alert, a non-governmental organisation and some legal luminaries were also at the SCID on Saturday.

Maintaining her innocence, she decried the situation where her baby was being kept behind the counter with her.

“My baby has been crying because of hunger and I cannot even feed her well here. I still have my stitches from the caesarean operation,” she said.

In an appeal to the state government, Johnson urged the governor to properly investigate the matter and not just rely on what he was told by LASTMA.

She said, “I am the innocent person here, yet I am being made to pay for what I did not do.”

Edu, however, said he maintained his earlier position, adding that Johnson was the alleged killer.

A senior police officer, who craved anonymity, told our correspondent that Johnson would be charged to court on Monday for murder.

An issue like power is not one you can do propaganda with. It is either there or it is not. Last time I was in Benin, the radio programs were buzzing with calls about NEPA and everyone acknowledge power has tremendously improved. The major complains most had was the increase in tarrif. Some other minors complains included bad transformers in some locations and PHCN staff's excesses. In Lagos, light is still being rationed in many areas but the number of hours made available in many places has also improved considerably. But Lagos is large and the amount of power allocated there is certainly not adequate so there will be rotation still until the power generated reaches around 6000 to 7000MW. For cities with far less population, the power will be able to go round more. Those calculating 160million Nigerians to 4000MW of electricity are just exhibiting gross stup1d1ty. Most rural areas use very small amount of power except for holiday periods like Christmas. Most of the power demands are from the cities. The vast majority of Nigerians still live in the rural areas. That is why 4000 mega watts for now will seem to go round the country fairly. Nigeria doesn't have many industries yet. We practically import 70 to 80 percent of items we use. As the power improves, more and more people will begin to setup industries. Then the power demands will also increase more. That is the projection you will hear the power minister or anyone give in terms of what we need to have in 2020. Anyone who tells you Nigeria needs 100, 000MW right now is a complete f00l who has no clue of his/her country. Many of these diaspora Nigerians are filled with bitterness. We do understand that but turning that into ridiculous cynicism about Nigeria is just not right. TCN has been taken over by Manitoba Ltd from Canada. GE has signed an MOU to build power stations. Akwa Ibom and Rivers IPP are currently on top gear nearing completion. Lagos is on planning stage too. Their officials have been going round. These are all great signs. Addressing journalists at the sideline of a power conference, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Minister of Power, Mr. Bath Nnaji said

Nnaji said the country would explore fuel for power generation, gas, hydro, coal, wind and solar to achieve the target adding that the current power generation was 3,600 MW out of the 5,700 MW available capacity embarassed embarassed embarassed.

He cited non-availability of gas, lack of proper maintenance, water management issues and transmission constraints major factors responsible for its inability to achieve maximum capacity.

The minister disclosed that the Federal Government had signed $1.5 billion agreement with the United States (US) Export and Import Bank on power sector financing.

Mr. Nnaji hinted that the Ministry of Power had both signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with General Electric and Siemen respectively to built 10,000 MW power plant respectively in the country.

Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Allison-Madueke, linked the current challenges in the power sector to the "gross mis-alignment’’ in terms of gas supply to power plants.

Mrs. Allison-Madueke said some of the power plants were cited in areas with no gas availability stressing that the situation was because both the ministry of power and the ministry of petroleum resources were not working in synergy before the contracts for those power stations were awarded.

She listed poor payment performance by Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) and National Integrated Power Project (NIPP) as well as poor funding for critical power projects as parts of the constraints of the sector.

She disclosed that as at March, the NIPP was owing NNPC N3.2 billion for gas supply; PHCN was owing about N1.58 billion while Ibom Power Plant in Akwa-Ibom State was indebted to the tune ofN1.19 billion.

Allison-Madueke said the current gas supply level to the power plants was 520 million scf/d and expressed optimism that NNPC would increase the supply to 700 scf/d million in few months.

The mistake our forefathers made was to be so docile and receptive of the white man's religion to the point they almost lost their cultural identity all in a bid to please the white man's philosophy of who God is or what represents God. Christianity is a white man's thing, our culture should not be replaced by christianity in whatever guise. China and co still have their cultural heritage regardless of what white Jesus and white God says, them na never perish, infact, they are over a billion of them.

Should Christianity Restrict You From Partaking In Your Tradition?

odumchi: For some time I've been wondering whether or not Christianity should prohibit us from fully partaking in our tradition and cultural heritage.

For example, I know people who are blessed with a rich cultural background but fail to partake in many of their people's practices because (as they put it) "such things are meant for pagans".

Must being Christian mean that our traditions and cultural practices must die? Was it not God that inspired us with our identity and such methods of self-preservation?

I'm also asking because this affects me. I am a Christian, but I don't believe that that should mean the traditions of my people should be ignored. Although this isn't really a problem in my area (since we have healthy attitudes towards cultural preservation), I would like to hear your opinions on it.

As for myself, I plan to join three of the masquerade and secret societies (ekpo, ekpe, and okonko) of my hometown. Does being a Christian mean that an Obosi man cannot partake in egwugwu, a Calabar man in ekpe, or an Ife man in divination?
