Car Talk › Re: Hybrid And Electric Vehicle Maintenance: Highlander Hybrid Battery Tear Down by empron(m): 8:29am On Nov 01, 2018 |
TRYGO: Toyota, and other auto manufacturer's employ the use of basically two types of battery chemistries for use for electric propulsions(to drive their various electric motors). One of such chemistries is nickel metal hydride batteries. Their capacities are dependent on the the strings of cells arranged in series, nature of electrodes and manufacture of such. They have a high energy density, and can safety go through several charge/discharge cycles without posing a fire hazard, unlike their lithium ion counterparts.
These batteries are arranged like a stalk of matches in a match boxes in series, and BMS(battery management systems) are designed to monitor and control currents, temperatures, and voltages, pumping in and out of the high voltage battery.
On highlander or Rx hybrid, Prius, and Camry vehicles, various capacities are allocated to these batteries, depending on the applications.
In the picture below is a battery pack for a high lander or Rx hybrid.
Specification: Has thirty 9.6-volts modules containing 8 cells/module for 240 cells total (nominal 1.2 volts/cell) provide nominal 288-volts, and a capacity of 6500mAh.
Individual modules cannot be replaces as found in Prius and Camry vehicles, because all modules on the highlander packs are stalked and permanently tightened.
In an event of failure, its always better to have the pack replaced, or get some of the pack of stalked modules replaced with another of matched capacity. Thanks for the information I have done jobs on camry hybrid pack but never handle highlander hybrid pack only troubleshooting a faulty ABS.I just discovered that individual modules cannot be replace on RX and Highlander. How can someone handle the caution light without DTC?Regards |
Car Talk › Re: Rebuilding A Honda Accord 2.0L Engine(The R series!) by empron(m): 9:11pm On Oct 31, 2018 |
TRYGO: The main purpose of writing this piece is to intimate people that, asides Toyotas, and others, HONDA BRANDED vehicles can be rebuilt, to standard.
There are a lot of skepticism about engine overhauls.
Some people, see it as a waste of time, and resources. They argue, why not just replaced an engine that's having a major mechanical problems, such as seizures, or engine knocks, etc.
Almost everything on an automobile, can be repaired, without entirely replacing it.
In this piece of writeup, I'd be sharing my experiences on the overhaul of a Honda Accord, 2008.
CASE STUDY
Vehicle: Honda accord 2008 Transmission system: Automatic Engine configuration: 4cylinder SOHC Engine capacity: 2.0L
CUSTOMER'S COMPLAINTS Engine makes a knocking noise; vehicle can't ascend hilly terrain; engine oil consumption is significantly high (he keeps topping it almost everyday).
THE FIX-INSPECTIONS 1. Blue smoke coming out of the exhaust tailpipe. 2. Confirmed engine has no compression enough. 3. Engine make was an R series lineups, which were incorporated in Crv, civics(2013- present), and accords(08).
These R series engines from Honda corporation are in 1.6/1.8/2.0L configurations, with the 2.0L, meant for performance, and fuel economy. The 1.6/1.8L are basically meant t for fuel economy. 4. All spark plugs were caked, as a result of excessive engine oil burnings. 5. Scoured crankshaft, crankshaft journal and camshaft bearings. 6. Excessive worn camshaft top cylinder journals, and a rocker arm assembly.
******* 1. All piston rings, metal bearings for the crankshaft, and camshafts were all replaced with new genuine Honda only parts.
2. During such rebuilds, endeavor to have all the rubber seals(O-seals, crankshaft/camshaft seals replaced).
3. Ensure the top cylinder and engine block surfaces are not warped(bent). That would prevent pressure leaks during the compression strokes. Get a machinist to help with checking that out before assembling the engine.
4. Don't use synthetic oil to break in the rings after overhauls. I use 20W-50 to get the rings seated properly, then after a month or 1000miles, I get the engine oil replaced, and switch to its recommended engine oil(5w20).
Note: Allowing the engine to idling excessive for a long time, those nothing to seat the rings properly as some mechanics are meant to believed.
Allowed the engine to idling for a while, then go for a test drive.
Simulate all driving kinds of conditions (aggressive, and in gridlocks).
5. Hand over vehicle to owner, and request that vehicle must be returned after a month, for engine oil change.
Finally, if you got any vehicle/engine to overhaul, please get across to the contact below.
It doesn't matter the engine configurations.
Whether, I4, V6-V12.
There are clients over here that we'd had their vehicles rebuilt(a Corolla is still in service, after 2017).
Regards, Joseph 08066643532(WhatsApp/call) DW Nig Ltd Isolo, Lagos www.dxta.net.ng
PS: Give your mechanic time to rebuild your engine; don't rush them(him). Nice job bro |

AutoElectNG: Time will tell if the due diligence I followed was faulty.
Secondly, America sets so many automotive standards that the world follows.
Think OBD II for example.
Think of the California's Bureau of Automotive Repair.
Think of the standards for collision repair in the Americas.
I too have undergone ASE education.
So I will naturally gravitate towards the American way of doing things.
I think we would benefit more if we did not fight radautoworks but tried to learn from her
------------------------------ MODIFIED BELOW -----------------------------
For the academically inclined among us:
Ignore America or more accurately California's disproportionate influence over the automotive industry at your own peril https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/the-cant-do-approach-of-the-american-auto-industry_us_58d8fb3de4b0f633072b3979
There is another important paper worth reading it is entitled: "The road to 2020 and beyond: What’s driving the global automotive industry?" and it is published by McKinsey&Company, look for it and download it with your favorite search engine
Will we also fight Egunmogaji if he were were to post about his methods here? Or are we fighting raduatoworks because she is american? Or because she is no technician but a knowledgeable nonetheless? Or she is a woman in a man's world?
Or is this a turf war in the making?
Parting shot: The automotive market is a global one not a local one, in plain language, we don't set standards, we follow them. We have a choice to be a local champion or an international star, I would rather be the later, and it begins and ends with the standards we choose to align ourselves with, whether they be local or global. Well said. |

Thank you. If there is need to change I will advice you to go for QR25 engine but you must ensure that you will have good technician that can handle it,don't buy Nigeria used if not u will be going from one workshop to another and changing different components from IPDM to ECU.it is a good car to drive.Regards |

The teenager class is something my husband really wants to do. That's how he started out in Jamaica. Same challenges then. Mechanics had no respect and it was looked down on. Noone considered it a viable option. People don't know how technical it actually is. Not everyone can be a lawyer, doctor or engineer. This is a good career path for a lot of people. If a child shows interest, it will be a good foundation for them to go on from.
In Houston, we actually took on a pair of brothers for a year. Today, one of them is a tech at a Nissan dealership and doing excellent for himself at age 17. The other helps out every once in a while with his nephew's repair shop but chose a different career path. Bravo Madam |

EgunMogaji: I’ll like to think that Gazzuzz was simply caught off guard on a bad day. We all have some days like that when we don’t have fuxs to give.
But when you advertise a number as a business venture then you ought to expect all kinds of people to ring you up.
Sometimes I get calls at 2AM here from Nigeria, some I let roll into voice mail when I don’t recognize them but the ones I decide to answer is answered politely even if it’s to fake “busy with a client on the other line” and let me get back to you.
But I’m coming from a country where customer service can make or break a company.
I’ve never met Gazzuzz in my life but I consider him a friend so if I call him I’m certainly going to not be officious. If he cuts me off I’ll just go camp at his shop and consume many beers and “Ofe Owerri”? as apology.
