The card and receiver will work in Nigeria since/as long as their signal is receivable in Nigeria. The only thing is you should not tell the GTV people that you are taking the receiver to Nigeria. Other than that, there should be no problem. |
The site in the link below generally lists (daily) football matches that are being shown on satellite although I don't think it is that up to date on African matches or African Satellites. The channels listed in brown/red are totally FTA while the ones in blue are encrypted though some of them are still sometimes watchable. If you place your cursor on a channel, whether blue or brown/red, the site will list the satellite(s) and frequency/ies on which the channel can be found. http://liveonsat.com/today.php ![]() |

I live in/near London and I did not even know or hear that the fellow was in London until seeing this thread. So how could the whole of London have stood still? Crap! |
@ojofree If Daarsat does indeed use 27w, as is being rumoured, then a diseqc motor will start to be seen to be useful in Nigeria (the south especially) and over time will gradually become popular as it becomes known. First, let's start with people who don't even know about FTA: some of them might like all or some of DSTV/HiTV (36e), MyTv (68e) and, now, Daarsat (27w?). That means they need at least three dishes whereas with a diseqc motor a single 90cm dish will do all of them. And remember the 'posing/effects' mentality in Naija - some people will like to show off that they have a motor. Secondly, for us FTA folks, we can also still get 7e and 22w, as well as those others mentioned above, on the same single dish. In fact, I will advise that if one wants to set up a diseqc motor in southern Nigeria they should use 7e as the first satellite to align to for best results because it will be at the top of the arc and make more likely that the motor will correctly track the other satellites through the arc. |
@ Enitan First of all, I have sent you an email about the private enquiry. Regarding HD: as Gangsta explained, the normal receiver cannot receive HD transmissions; you need a receiver that is HD capable; just google 'HD satellite receivers' and I'm sure several examples should come up. Regarding the diseqc motor cables: it really is simple; the motor itself has two cable inputs --- one from the LNB and one from the receiver; it is not that much different from using a diseqc switch when one/more cable/s go/es from LNB to switch and another goes from switch to receiver. The more complex motor cabling is when you are using a jack and a positioner when four cable inputs may be involved. I hope Badaru will come back and explain to us after he has set up his jack motor dish in Lagos. @ Badaru Please make sure you come back and give us details (including photos) of your jack motor installation when completed; good luck with it. |
@Okaakoko my dish was set at intelsat 902k, got few scrambled channels. the signal strength was 68%, but last week i tried mannual scan but i changed it from intelsat to eutelsat w4 the signal was about 82% (strong decoder str4653x). I am afraid to scan in orther to avoid damages. please somebody tel me what to do. thanks and God bless.First of all, it is likely that your dish is merely pointing at 36e not Intelsat 902 which is at 62e. So just forget about 62e altogether; it is simply likely that 62e has transponders that are similar to those on 36e and therefore the receiver is deceiving you that you are on Intelsat 902. Second, when you say "signal", you need to come back and clarify. Most receivers will show two kinds of signal level; one is signal strength while the other is signal quality (usually the one in the bottom: it is the signal quality that we are most concerned about. Simply put, the higher the signal quality you have, the better. Okaakoko:As I said above, the likelihood is that you are actually on 36e not Intelsat 902. As Enitan has explained, those channels were free on 36e for some time; now they are encrypted, you need a subscription in order to watch them. |
I'D like to comment on a some of the things being discussed. 1. Same questions repeated over and over This is a real put-off. We try to be welcoming to newbies but even if you are new to something, you help yourself and you help others to help you by at least doing a bit of homework . At least, first of all READ the information that is already available either here on the thread or in the FAQs that some kind members have helpfully provided! Secondly, if you look at the bottom of each page here, there is a search box that can be used to search for information (even if the search tool is admittedly basic) 2. Daarsat I don't know a lot about Daarsat; however, I doubt that all their channels will be in HD; the likelihood is that most channels will be normal SD while a few will be HD. I will be very surprised indeed if all their channels will be HD. 3. Diseqc/USALS Motor Information on how the motor controls both azimuth and elevation is already on the thread plus a link to a set-up guide. As I said under "repeat questions" point 1 above, you can use the search engine to find information. In this case the information is on page 27 of this thread as linked below. Picture, Videos and Guide on Diseqc Motors in Posts 849-856 on page 27 |
@Gangsta Sorry for late reply. I suspect that the receiver that will meet the specs you want is the long-awaited Dreambox DM 8000 which is currently under beta testing, so is not really in the market. When it debuts, the initial price is expected to be in the region of $1500. If I think of any other receiver that can meet the specs, I'll come back to post it. |
Enitan DVB-C receivers are for cable transmissions and accordingly have cable tuners in them; they will not work with satellite transmission at all; neither will DVB-S receivers work with cable transmission. Occasionally, you get a receiver that has dual tuners - most commonly one for digital terrestrial (DVB-T) and one for satellite (DVB-S); then such a receiver can be used for both satellite and digital terrestrial transmissions e.g. Technomate TM-6900. I am not sure if there is a DVB-C combo (I don't get involved in cable). |
Especially for Newbies: I found a useful website on aligning satellite dishes; but note that they use Astra 2 which is generally not receivable in Nigeria/West Africa; nevertheless, the principles are basically the same for whatever satellite one wants to receive that is available in one's location. http://bytelive.com/wiki/tiki-index.php?page=How+to+align+a+satellite+dish Also: note that there are several videos on you tube giving guidance on how to align a dish; the one in the link below is by the guy who prepared the above Guide. Meanwhile when they say that the biscuit/manna or oil is "free", it is a trick! When you send for it, you have to give your address; then the fun starts as they start sending you regular letters asking you to send money or to become a "partner" with the m-industry erm "ministry". |
Enigma,Hi Gangsta and Hi again everyone. I've been away/busy/travelling although I have been looking in from time to time; in fact, I logged in a couple of times when I was in North Africa (Tunisia). I see peeps are enjoying part of the DSTV bouquet which is good news for as long as it lasts. I am not fully back in the swing of latest FTA developments but soon I should know what is happening. One development though: I have now just replaced my 80cm dish with a 1m dish and I can now get some channels on Nilesat. I can receive the Showtime frequencies but of course the channels are currently scrambled; I cannot receive most H polarisation frequencies which means I cannot currently get the ART/Phela stations. |
toxnaija Deep down, I am with you in that I despair instinctively when I see bad grammar/spelling --- believe me, even among native speakers here in the UK (I know because I teach and examine them on a professional level). But, I think what the guys are saying is that we shouldn't let the fact that many have not kept to what should be the good standard disturb our mutual enjoyment of this thread and, to that extent, I agree with them. It just 'sounded' harsher because a number of people were making the same point. I am now going to add my own opinions: 1. I think we should accept those with bad grammar/spelling and still enjoy the thread nevertheless 2. In all honesty, it does help if (a) people try to communicate in simple but good English (no text speak; minimum slang); (b) decent spelling; (c) decent punctuation. It makes it easier to understand the poster or their problem and to suggest solutions; it is also good discipline for the poster - they develop and build themselves up ---- even for other things like job prospects etc. |

You are going to have to forgive me for using an expletive (I don't normally use them), but NTA's picture quality was sh*te - utterly diabolical. I was watching BBC jejely but when the Naija team was about to march past, I thought to have a look at what NTA was doing with it, and it was just crap, so I returned to BBC peacefully. We/Naija are just uselessly all mouth in some things; as they say in Texas; "all hat and no cattle"! |
@ twinstaiye Is it possible at all to link this thread to the main thread at all? Though, no big deal if not as we can just link to it in posts as I've just done in one. |
toxnaija:Anyone who wants a basic tutorial or info on entering keys will find useful information from post number 12 (and also from post number 35) on the thread in the following link: https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-114591.0.html toxnaija Leicester city is not far from London; but it is still about 2 hours from London. My understanding is that this is where you are going to study? If you want to give the name of the institution, I should be able to confirm things for you. Leicester square is in London; just a particular spot/area in London. (Not likely where you are going to study!) |
@twinstaiye Yes, I think we should add it to the rules that the posting of keys are not allowed; and that it should be in very visible/large print so that there is no excuse. It is ok to post 6969 or 8280 as those are not keys but codes for the particular receiver. @F_Marshal Sorry about getting the spelling wrong; my eyes deceived me. (I wonder if you have seen that thing with bad spellings going round the Net and the way the brain reads what the words 'should' be despite how they are spelt?)I have used the Strong on only two occasions; both times in Naija; both times when assisting others to install dishes. If one wants to play safe (and also it will probably be cheaper) the thing to do will be to buy a Strong receiver when in Naija --- though double checking that it is multicrypt (they usually are anyway). The thing is that the manufacturers of the Strong receiver, as I understand it, are part (or wholly?) owners of MyTV, so it can be guaranteed that the receivers they bring will be suitable for MyTV's Conax encryption. But I think they have been careful that the receivers that they push into the Nigerian market also does Irdeto for DSTV. Now the Technomate: the TM has a lot of support; the TM 5400 has some advantages: 1. it is multicrypt so will do both Irdeto and Conax and is thus suitable for Nigeria; 2. it can take up to 10,000 channels; 3. it has USB support for patching; 4. it is PVR 'ready' via USB. Now back to the support: the support mainly comes from the following site: _http://alsat.co.uk/forum/index.php. It is generally kept up to date with patches and currently opens as many encrypted channels as any other receiver (except card sharing) and CAMs (except the Diablo CAM). Have a look at that website --- though to get the full gist, you have to register (they keep some things away from non-registered lurkers). Funny, in Naija the main receiver that I use is a Hivion 9090 which is also multicrypt and is well supported with patches. |
ojofree:See page 23 of this thread on LNB skew; or do a search of the thread for LNB skew. |
F_Marshall Many of us in the UK are very jealous that some of you guys stateside have space for such large dishes; at one UK forum that I discuss with people, we once had pictures of such dishes that one guy took down and dismantled (or something like that) when he bought the house from its previous owner. You should have seen guys lamenting that it was such a waste of such a beautiful dish! ![]() Edited Another story; one guy on that forum has a 1.2m dish; (which is reasonably big for the UK --- though of course there are people with bigger dishes); anyway, some guy from Sweden, I think, posted pictures of a 4m or so dish that he uses there; then the guy from the UK said: "I have just been outside to shout at my 1.2m dish; I called it pathetic"! ![]() |
@toxnaija To your questions regarding Nilesat/Leicester etc. In the UK, Nilesat is like holy grail for sat hobbyists because it is not easy to get; officially, the footprint does not reach here but it still can be received sometimes. In the south, like London & Kent, a 1.2m dish will get the vertical transponders but will not even get the horizontal transponders generally except for some lucky moments. At the moment, even I don't yet get Nilesat; I am just planning to get a 1.1 dish to be able to get some of the vertical transponders. Leicester is slightly further north of London, that means that you really need at least a 1.2m dish to be assured of getting some of Nilesat. However, there is no problem with getting channels here. Even a motorised 60cm dish should readily receive thousands of channels - depending on line of sight. My recommendation will be for you to get a 1.1m (or 1.2m) dish and motorise it. If you like you can get a small 43cm dish for 28e (i.e. where the 'Sky' satellite is) --- or even just stick to the single large dish. If you go to lyngsat and look at 28e, you will see all the free (totally FTA) channels from that satellite; if I were you, I won't even bother to subscribe to Sky (though I myself actually subscribe to some of it!) and save money sticking to the FTA channels. If you get a receiver like the Technomate 5400 and patch it, you will usually be able to open some encrypted channels from across Europe. Unless you want to subscribe to Sky, there is no need to bother buying the Sky receiver at all (at the moment at any rate i.e. unless and until they drop the charge they impose for using their PVR). Edited @ F_Marshall I feel you; I hope people will understand this very very important matter. |
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 toxnaija Please please please EDIT your post and REMOVE the keys; or if tox is not around, could a moderator please remove the keys!. Posting keys on a site like this is a sure way to get into trouble; in Europe sites are closed down for this and operators prosecuted for it; that is why most key sites are based/hosted in the far East well out of Europe. Even when linking to a key site, do not make it a live link; instead make it a dead link by using something like _http or ht*p etc. |
toxnaija:toxnaija Leicester city is roughly about 2-3 hours from London (by car or train). With even a 60cm dish you will be able to get a lot of satellites (e.g. if motorised) because many European satellites are very easily received here. However, one or two satellites, especially Nilesat, will require a bigger dish starting from 1.2 onwards. But because of planning permission, many do not go higher than a 1m dish (by law, you can have two dishes - one maximum 1m and the other maximum 60cm; anything more/higher, then you need to obtain planning permission; you may also have difficulty if you are in a hostel). The most standard hobbyist installation is between an 80cm to 1.1cm dish on a motor which will get you most satellites between 53e and 45w (depending on line of sight) ---- a very huge span with lots of channels. You can type Leicester into www.dishpointer.com and it will list the sats that can be received and ith what size dish. |
@badaru I just noticed that you referred to the DB 500 C; I believe that is a the DB with cable tuner; for satellite, what you want is the DB 500 S. |
@enitan Yeah, I agree with a lot of what you say; it is free TV after all and what we get is what we get, that's the nature of FTA. It is a fun hobby (and that is what it is primarily for me), good business for our friends who install or sell equipment; and quite useful for those who can't or simply refuse to subscribe to pay TV. @badaru Ordinarily, I am happy to help buy the Dreambox; there are two little snags --- first, I'm still not sure when I'll definitely be in Naija next; second, there are many many clone DB 500 out there and I will be concerned lest one I buy turns out to be a clone (what I can do is make some checks during the week to see if there is an official dealer nearby ---- but then that will be more expensive than one that can be bought on ebay)! |
Your question has been answered before ---- maybe on another thread!!!!!!! 1. Find someone with an identical receiver and who gets eTV and do a software transfer from their receiver to yours; or 2. Search on the Net (the links are in the main thread) for non-official software i.e. 'patch' for your receiver and load it. |

@Shanumark You have to learn some basics; go through the very good FAQ prepared by twinstaiye and others to get idea of basics. Short summary; you have to identify what satellite(s) your dish is pointing at; then you can use information on lyngsat or flysat (links in above post) to identify which channels can be received and what details (transponder/symbol rate/polarity) to enter in your receiver. @ftalover If you go to pages 21 and 27 of this thread you will get an idea of what stations can be received in Nigeria from Eutelsat W3 at 7 east (note correct satellite details). |
