Muthamiah:Which Irdeto/Conax channels are you thinking of and on which satellite? |
@ Gangsta The CI slot is usually in front either under or near where the card goes (if it is a receiver with both a card reader and a CI slot); if a receiver with just a CI slot, it will be where the card would go -- after a CAM has been first inserted. See examples in links: http://www.apnadth.com/images/set_top_box.jpg http://www.pioneer.nl/images/eur/CISlot.gif http://upload.cdfreaks.com/seanbyrne/CAM_Features_2.jpg |
@Enigma, I'm quite impressed with your dept of knowledge on cams, cards and recievers. You seem to know it all. Just two questions for you though: How can I lay my hands on the diablo cam? I have a decoder with a CI slot, so hooking it up wouldn't be muct of a hassle. Also, I'm interested in the card sharing stuff. Can you throw more light on how I can go about it?
The Diablo CAM is not difficult to get; first you might talk to badaru or Adewest as I think they might be able to lace you up with one; otherwise you'd have to buy it online (google 'buy diablo cam') or ask someone coming down from Europe, North Africa etc to get one for you. Note, you willl need not only the CAM itself but also a CAS III programmer. With regard card sharing, many people who do it keep it on the down low because of the problems I mentioned before -- so that one is not that easy. You could try googling 'funfiles forum' or 'RDI Board' as there are people who do it on those forums; or again, google 'cardsharing' or 'cardsharing network' etc. |
@ badaru I hope that towards the end of the new year I will link with you for a 2.4 motorised installation in Lagos; very well done, on your recent installation. @ Adewest Big well done, for revitalising this thread in terms of what is possible with the 'European' satellites like Hotbird, W2 etc. ![]() |
Someone (I believe it was my friend Gangsta) asked for a brief explanation of the differences between CAMs, cards etc. First of all, let me point out that badaru kindly posted a good explanation of these and some other things earlier in this link: https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-7715.2112.html#msg2823178 Brief summary: FTA receivers: these receivers have no inbuilt slot for a card or CAM as they are primarily intended for FTA reception only. However: (a) some of them e.g. Technisat T888, Technomate 1000 etc can be patched such that they might be able to receive some encrypted channels; (b) some of them e.g. TM 1000 can have a card reader added to them so that a card can then be used to receive PayTV. Receivers with Card Slots: firstly, these can receive FTA channels; secondly, they can accept some cards for watching PayTV. However, some such receivers can accept cards for only one encryption system e.g. DSTV receivers that only accept Irdeto cards; some can accept cards for two encryption systems e.g. the Strong receiver models that accept both Irdeto and Conax cards; some receivers are "multicrypt" (usually after being patched) which means they can accept cards for many encryption systems. Note: sometimes receivers that can accept cards of a particular encryption system are called 'embedded' i.e. they have an inbuilt CAM which, at least, can accept cards of a particular system or systems; thus you might hear 'Irdeto embedded' or 'Viaccess embedded' or 'Conax embedded'. Also, sometimes with patched receivers, the embedded CAM on its own (without a card) can open some PayTV stations of a particular encryption system. Receivers with a CI slot: firstly, CI means 'Common Interface' which in turn means the receiver has a slot that can take a CAM; the best CI slot will be one that can accept a CAM that in turn will work with different encryption systems. Thus, if one has a CI receiver, one can buy a CAM and then insert a card in that CAM for a particular encryption system e.g. Irdeto Card like that for DSTV or Conax card like that for MyTV. At the moment we are talking about official card for which one pays a (monthly) subscription. CAM: first, CAM stands for 'Conditional Access Module'; it looks like a PMCIA card; second, 'conditional access' means that access to some stations are subject to a condition, usually meaning a subscription. Thus access to DSTV stations is subject to a condition, i.e, subscription and the receiver is instructed by codes/keys to grant conditional access to the channels subscribed to. The primary way by which the CAM works is with an official card of the provider e.g. DSTV card. So one inserts one's DSTV card into the receiver's CAM; remember that the CAM may be inbuilt into the receiver or inserted into a CI slot; or a card reader may be attached to some FTA receivers. However: some CAMs on their own are 'programmable' such that even without cards they act as emulators (emulate a card) and grant access to PayTV without subscription. The best of this type of CAM at the moment (in Europe at any rate) is the Diablo CAM. Official Card: This is simply the official card issued by a provider e.g. DSTV to their subscribers which enables the subscriber to have access to the subscribed channels. Edited: MOSC = Modified Original Smartcard (Subscription Card): This refers to an official card that has been modified by programming to either (a) allow access to PayTV channels without maintaining one's subscription or (b) watching more channels than one is subscribing to e.g. some one with a basic/cheapest subscription watching extra, full subscription or premium channels. However, nowadays official cards have become more 'clever' and are not all that easy to modify anymore. Unofficial Cards: This is the category into which cards like the Gamma, Abracadabra, MII, Kebab etc fall. They are cards produced/programmed by third parties to give unofficial access to some providers' channels without subscription. As I said before, they can be useful but are not guaranteed; e.g. while the Gamma card has been working for 2 years, someone may buy it today and find that tomorrow it is no longer opening any channels and has become an ice scraper. Personally, I don't bother with these cards. Card sharing: We can identify two meanings: (a) one person has two or three receivers in his premises and only one subscription to DSTV; if the receivers are card sharing receivers, that person can configure them such that all the receivers can receive the channels subscribed to in different rooms, instead of buying several official cards; (b) people in different places (even different parts of the world) with card sharing receivers can connect to one server to share an official card or official cards. Sometimes, they may just be friends who come to an arrangement --- often each person providing at least one card; e.g. one person provides MyTV card and another a DSTV card etc and they all 'share' these to receive channels from the different providers; another type is that you have card sharing operators who charge a fee to others to be allowed to join the 'sharing' network. Caution: providers strongly target card sharing, particularly of the latter type taking out the servers and trying to prosecute members of the 'sharing ring'. Again, personally I don't dabble in card sharing; if at all I will, it will most likely simply be between my own receivers exclusively. OK: I'll stop there for now. @twinstaiye I got your admin message of some time ago, thanks; I just haven't had time but still think the idea of using the FAQ thread to store the kind of information above centrally should still be pursued. @toxnaija My good friend, you just have to forgive me, I promise to try and make time when I'm next in Lagos - hopefully, by April latest. @ Gangsta Thanks, my good friend (even though we are yet to meet; hopefully that will happen eventually) |
@ toxnaija and Ecowas4all The Hotbird satellites are relatively new and very powerful; the W2 satellite on the other hand is old and has rather weak signals. So while Hotbird might be receivable in Nigeria, I expect W2 to be far much more difficult. I can see the attraction of W2 particularly because of Digitalb which still has a decent amount of football and which, I believe, may still be open on the Gamma and some other cards (as on the Diablo Cam). @all Since I mentioned the Gamma card (above), a word about Gamma, Abracadabra, M2 (MII) and other cards. For those willing to take risks, one or other of these cards can be useful for some time to open particular packages. However, one danger has long been known with cards generally, that is, once the producers of the cards have made enough money (or are heavily 'pressurised') the support for the card starts to drop until the card becomes what UK hobbyists call an 'ice scraper' i.e. only useful for scraping ice off your windscreen etc. Having said that, the Gamma has been working for about 2 years now (many cards do not last that long) while the Abracadabra has been working for some months. So they have not been bad for those who have been using them. The question now is: for how long more will they last? |
Hi everyone Been rather busy; Lagos eats a lot of time; rather wastes a lot of time. Anyway: Christmas present on Eutelsat W4 36e ("DSTV" ; 12437H 23438 TCM currently FTA (or has it been so for long and I just didn't know?).@maddox Sorry for late reply; please use email in my profile @ toxnaija Saw you on the news yesterday; good going ![]() Apologies that it seems I'm going to have to take a rain check on your kind invitation as I will be back in the UK (DV) in the next couple of days. |
@ bodejohn My own congratulations Oh (though belated!); Olorun a wo o, Olorun a da si, Amin. @twinstaiye My apology (indeed to all); it crossed my mind that I could have brought some things e.g. sat finder, compass, rs 232 etc; it just was not possible this time; it is now most certain that I will be back again in Lagos by/before March or latest 1st week in April; I'll see what I can do then@ toxnaija Thanks, man; I will get in touch; I'm still doing a few urgent runnings though. @ Gangsta Nice to 'see' you again; later, I will explain the differences between e.g. official cards, MOSCs, programmable cards and CAMs. @ all Meanwhile I got this information on a UK forum about the Abracadabra card: Card available at Multi-Sat-System Kwanar Maggi kano Nig. |
Quick hello to all; I'm in Lagos (since 6th December) and I have only now got my Internet connected (weekend and holiday season delays); so I have a bit of reading and catching up to do. Laters ![]() |
olofofo:Well, I have only commented about postings on this thread; I haven not commented on the yahoogroup and I have no problems with the yahoogroup (whether or not I am part of it). About forums closing some parts to non-members: Well I am a member of many satellite forums in the UK, Europe and Asia etc. Firstly, many do not require membership at all to read all the information on them; even with some that require membership to read some parts, it is only a few parts e.g where they keep software; some that require membership to read at all are out to make money and the information on them cann be obtained freely on other forums. |
@ Enigma, Please kindly list the other pressures and reasons why channels are encrypted. Thanks. Cheers.
There are many reasons that stations encrypt. 1. They have bought the rights to show certain content only in a particular country or countries; if there is overspill to other countries, those who supply the content to them may accuse them of breach of contract. It is all about politics and economics; the content providers want to make as much money as possible, so they will sell rights to the same content to different stations in different countries. The best example of course is English Premiership. 2. Some stations who have paid a lot of money for some content feel that the best way to recoup the money and make profit is to encrypt and then charge viewers/subscribers to watch the content/station. 3. Yes, some stations who have rights in particular content in one country e.g. HiTV in Nigeria may put pressure on a station in another country (e.g. RDV Senegal) showing the same content but whose signal can be received in the first country (e.g. Nigeria). But in truth the power of this weapon is limited and is mainly based on cooperation. For example, I don't think HiTV can do anything about Nilesat's signals or for example those signals that can be received on C band e.g. on 55w. 4. Technically, information gathered on a forum like this can make a company like HiTV take action; but if they did not already know the information without seeing it on a forum then, as I said before, they are a mickey mouse organisation. Look, there are hundreds (maybe thousands) of satellite forums worldwide. One of the important parts of the hobby is for a member who finds a useful channel becoming FTA to notify other members; I will list some below as examples; also many sites that we consult like flysat, lyngsat and kingofsat everyday list channels that have gone FTA or that are temporarily FTA ---- so this thing is not a secretive thing that we should be hiding. Examples: http://en.kingofsat.net/tempfta.php http://www.flysat.com/fta.php http://www.techwatch.co.uk/forums/fta-free-to-air/ PS by the way, we haven't heard of Gangsta for a while; hope all is well! |
About HiTV being on a European satellite. My understanding is that the satellite concerned (whose details posters have now deleted) is 28e; while I will double check later today, I can tell you the following: 1. Less than a month ago HiTV launched 1 (one) channel on 28e ("Sky" platform) which combines two of their Naija channels i.e. Nigezie and Hi Nolly(?). 2. The channel is totally free to air and anybody anywhere who can receive 28e can watch it totally legally; I even told friends in Belgium to tune into it and we/they have been watching it since day one of its arrival on "Sky". 3. Discussing this on nairaland is absolutely not a problem at all. 4. HiTV does not dare to show Premiership football on 28e If I am wrong, please let me know what other HiTV stations are available on 28e. Edited The next two links show an example of how HiTV's arrival on 28e was announced in one UK forum; http://www.satellites.co.uk/satellite/793250-post1.html and http://www.satellites.co.uk/satellite/793651-post1.html while the next link shows how its arrival was predicted http://www.satellites.co.uk/satellite/792970-post401.html And here is a thread on this very nairaland forum about the same thing: https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-193920.0.html |
Yes Pastor Aio, I agree. I always thought that even if Kunle used a wrong choice of words in saying "it is wrong to tithe", his real point is much clearer. Indeed while the onus is on him to express himself accurately, I think his greater point is much clearer and could have been easily comprehended by an objective reader. I think the fundamental point does remain: that the continued yoke and burden being placed on misguided or misinformed (or even uninformed) Christians by most modern teachings on "tithing" really need to be challenged vigorously and continuously. One should not allow semantics or nit-pickings regarding choice of words and pedantic gyrations to divert attention away from this real and pressing matter. Of course if someone, having the full facts and understanding them, chooses to "tithe" in the way that it is taught predominantly today, that is their choice and they should not necessarily be castigated. However, it is a different matter where people are deceived, bullied or abused into succumbing to false superstitions (i.e. blessing and/or curse), mostly with the aim of fleecing them. |
olofofo:No problem. |
I've just been catching up --- I see quite a lot has been happening. First of all welcome to Adewest; very useful to have another very experienced installer (like Badaru) on board especially with regard to the slightly larger dishes i.e. 1.8 and above and how to make the best of them in Naija. With regard to keeping information public/private, my instinct and preference is to keep information open and public as we have been doing on this thread. As long as we manage to stay within Nigerian and any other relevant law, we have nothing to fear. For example, even the information (if true) that HiTV can be watched on some European satellite should be available publicly; there is no reason to hide it. If HiTV are not already aware before it is posted here then they are a mickey mouse organisation. Also, RDV does not encrypt merely because people post information here or any other forum. There are other pressures and reasons why they encrypt. The one thing that must not be posted is keys - of any provider! That one is an absolute no no. But the rest like feed frequency etc can be safely and lawfully posted. Enigma etal, please help me with the extrapolation before I post the details; does the elevation of a dish like nilesat change with location eg Lagos and kaduna.Nilesat elevation in Kaduna should be lower than for Lagos, I believe. |
This may sound funny ,but its real and a spy on all our posts may likely benefit from it,so keep spying at least you will have something to smile with.Recently i read about piracy on HITV part ,That is true my recent research shows its possible to view HITV on a particular bird in europe free of charge for now .I don't think its possible to view it here but if adewest can assure us and the house want me to publish the bird and transponder, then i will do that.but i believe if hotbird is receivable here in Nigeria then the bird is possible as well. But i guess my brothers in uk on this forum can check me out on that bird.but first the house must give me go ahead to post the transponders and the bird. What satellite is this? I can double-check from here if the information is true; also i will have an idea if the satellite is receivable in Naija. |
KunleOshob: anonimi:Absolutely! The theme does run through the New Testament; but it was also always reflected in the OT such that even some of the OT passages concerning tithes say that some of the tithes should be shared with widows, orphans, aliens ("illegal aliens" etc.For example, Deuteronomy 14:23-29 (NLT) and the portion extracted below. "At the end of every third year bring the tithe of all your crops and store it in the nearest town. Give it to the Levites, who have no inheritance among you, as well as to the foreigners living among you, the orphans, and the widows in your towns, so they can eat and be satisfied. Then the Lord your God will bless you in all your work." |
Also today Villareal v Man U on eTV - Intelsat 7/10 68.5e. |
@twinstaiye (Oga Moderator) First I have a question: the FTA FAQ thread does not seem to be Sticky (or am I missing something?) Second, I have an idea: we can use that thread to provide links to some specific useful information on the other thread and maybe some other general things: Example 1: HOW TO INTERPRETE LYNGSAT DATA Example 2: One post that can be modified as we get new information giving the satellites that can be received in Naija/West Africa like this one SATELLITES AND CHANNELS THAT CAN BE RECEIVED IN NIGERIA AND WEST AFRICA That one can simply be copied and pasted and then be modified as things change. Example 3: could be a post containing 2 or 3 links to the main posts that explain keys. And many other things like that , I would be quite happy to be responsible for doing it; at least it would be a specific contribution to the FAQs. |
Very well predicted indeed, Enitan ![]() You know one thing: the move of the channels previously on NSS7 (22w) is a blessing if they all turn up on Sirius 4. That means folk in Naija/West Africa can kill two birds with one stone i.e. get Sirius 4 (5e) and W3A (7e) on one dish whether with 2 LNBs or better still with just 1 LNB. This is particularly good for newcomers while older hands like Enitan can find something else to do with the NSS 7 dish - although French football still turns up on NSS 7 sha. ![]() EDITED By the way, me too I want to claim some credit sha because i first asked people to watch out for Sirius 4 in the FTA Season 1 thread back in July HERE |
bodejohn:Note the transponder(s) on which the channels are; write down the details (Freq, Polarity & SR); delete the transponder(s) from your receiver; re-enter them & scan or do a blind search/scan; consult Kingofsat, Lyngsat etc. If they are still not there, then they are currently not transmitting. |
maddoxoj I suspect that this particular "Metro" is a proper Nigerian outfit based in PH and separate from Metro Tv of Ghana; if wrong, I stand corrected. |
Fab post, maddoxoj! ![]() |
@olofofo The question is not whether Metro is just trying to make any buck; the question is: has any law been broken? @enitan How do you mean; what information is that? ![]() |
enitan2002:Contact people like flysat, lyngsat etc to be a reporter for them e.g. on what is available to watch and changes in Nigeria/West Africa. However, I don't know if they pay or only accept people on a volunteer basis. |
olofofo:Well, there are several issues and I won't deal with all of them here; if any of the parties to the case needs legal assistance, I will be prepared to provide a professional legal opinion in respect of the issues. I will just raise one or two things to think about. 1. Has Metro violated HiTV's rights? Remember that Metro had Showtime card/subscription? 2. Question 1 above involves the proper interpretation of several provisions of the Copyright Act. 3. Apart from HiTV's rights, has Metro broken a law in simply receiving Showtime pictures in Nigeria? 4. Is it illegal to use a Showtime card in Nigeria to watch Showtime? 5. On the other hand, is Metro breaking the law (or someone else's copyright) by retransmitting and reselling Showtime pictures? [Interestingly, what Metro did also happens in Spain - and, similarly some 'noise' was being made about the retransmitters recently; in some Scandinavian countries, if the signal is free then you can retransmit it] I will just leave things like that, so that readers can see that the issues are not wholly straightforward |
@ All I have changed my profile to include an email. BUT if you send me an email on that address, it is advisable that you post here to tell me otherwise I might not read the mail. |
Please can the gurus in the house help me with the current frq for Ait, Stv 1 and other missing frqs.In addition to other response given: anyone who is looking for a particular channel or frequency can also use the 'Search/Zap' function on kingofsat; just type in the name of the channel if you know it. http://en.kingofsat.net/search.php olofofo:This is very true and a very good point to make to add to our collective knowledge and increase what other members might be able to get. Even here in the UK, I discovered about 3 months ago that on my multi-LNB set up, the LNB picking up 7e (W3) can also easily pick up 9e (Eurobird 9) at the same time --- very helpful bonus. |
Image in the link below gives an idea of how some of the satellites that we can see are lined up in space; it helps in understanding how we position/adjust the dish when moving from one satellite to another. It can be anlarged/magnified for better view. (NB copyright of and thanks to members of some UK forums including the nosky forum) http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v510/Analoguesat/?action=view¤t=satarc.jpg ![]() (PS Heavens only know how long it will remain on Photobucket) |
Message for Pitodenz (or anyone else in fact) If you know (or can contact) the Mr. John Nwafor of Metro Digital mentioned in the article, please arrange to get his email (or for him to contact me); I may be able to help him and his lawyers on the law in this area (both Nigerian law and UK law for comparison). ![]() |
An example of PayTV versus FTA politics: in the case in the link HiTV is trying to use "muscle" to prevent Metro Digital from retransmitting and selling football from Showtime. However, at the moment Metro has been able to obtain a court order preventing NCC (at instigation of HiTV) from raiding Metro's offices. http://www.thestandard.com/news/2008/08/24/nigerias-metro-digital-copyright-dispute-headed-court ![]() |
Know that watching pay tv without subscription is illegalIn Nigeria, it may not be illegal especially if the broadcast does not originate from Nigeria. The main ones that may be illegal in Nigeria to watch without subscription are those originating in Nigeria i.e. DSTV, MyTV, HiTV, Trend etc. PS I will find the time to properly research Nigerian law on the subject and give definitive statement - some time soon, hopefully. |
