ekt_bear:This isn't really news. I remember reading about it in my undergrad textbook more than five years ago. The HIV virus needs 2 membrane proteins to infect an immune cell. The virus first attaches to the cell membrane using CD4 protein which everybody has and then uses CCR5 to trigger endocytosis, entering the cell. Most oyimbo people (and all Africans) have the CCR5 protein on the surface of their cells but a very small percentage of them don't meaning the virus cannot enter their immune cells and thus cannot make copies of itself or establish an infection. The immune system is actually very good at destroying HIV virions floating about in the blood but the problem is that once it can get a foothold inside the cells it can hide from the immune system and pump out more copies of itself and gradually war the person down. Sadly, Africans are not known to carry this mutation so this knowledge is not useful for now. Plus less than 1% of oyimbos (I've forgotten the exact figure) are immune. The guy in the article was just really lucky. |
This woman needs to be locked away fast. The only proven crime I see here is the grievious assault by the woman. Simply accusing a man of (attempted) r.ape is not proof of anything and does not absolve her of her crime. Even if the guy actually tried to r.ape her (and there's no proof of this), she didn't need to cut off his equipment in order to escape. If someone tried to steal your wallet, would if be right to cut off their hand? How do we know that she didn't just make up this story to justify her sick act. If she was able to pin the guy down long enough to cut off his Willy Johnson, then she is far from a helpless victim. I'm sick and tired of seeing crazy women getting away with murder by crying r.ape. This nonsense has to stop. Also, I don't know why all you Nairalanders can't read something, analyze the facts and come to your own conclusions like intelligent people. You always just swallow the OP's conclusions like a bunch of retar.ds. Hardly anyone thinks before they post nowadays. It's really sad to see. |
Solja go, solja come. This time we'll see even bigger salaries an fatter allowances for our brave legislators, insha allah. |
Seun:Crap! I didn't realize this when I read the bill. If I remember right, Lagos has already passed its own FOI law a few years ago. I'm sure most of the other state governors will never agree to sign such a bill. It will expose present and former governors and civil servants to too much embarassment. Corruption at the local and state level is too crude to escape notice when the public can see all the books. |
There's a much older thread on this same topic stickied at the top of the gaming section. In it, I've posted step by step instructions on how to unlock (jailbreak) your PS3. https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-594092.0.html If you're interested in doing it yourself, then that's where you should be. You'll have to be careful though because you can easily destroy your PS3 permanently if you make a mistake. If you live in Lagos and you want a professional to do it for you you should get in touch with my guy fisolucci http://fisolucci.com/ps3unlocking He also has plenty of games at a very reasonable price Cheers. |
R@pe victims are one of the most annoying casualties of Nigeria's stu.pid abortion law. Fortunately, like most laws over here, it's hardly ever enforced. If she your friend was r@ped, then its perfectly understandable that she doesn't want to destroy all her future plans by keeping the baby. In my opinion, she shouldn't be forced to do so because of some other people's religious views. Tell your friend to go and see a gynaecologist. Also she should also do an HIV test now (to see if she had the virus before the r@pe) and again in 3 to 6 months (to see if she has been newly infected). HIV is treatable. If, god forbid, the r@pists have given it to her she'll be far better of if she knows. My condolences to her. |
Gynecomastia is extremely common in boys around puberty but, like your doctor said, it usually disappears in a few years. Yours seem to be taking a bit longer to go but that doesn't mean it won't eventually. My advice to you is to lose some weight and try and build up your muscles especially in those in the chest. Try doing bench presses and push-ups, that will make it less obvious in the short term. If the brea.sts keep growing, then you should see an endocrinologist. Cheers. |
@Mpetempe Go and see a doctor. He'll probably ask you to do a blood sugar test, a urinalysis and a something called an E and U (a type of kidney function test). The most common cause of this problem is Diabetes but you shouldn't assume. See a doctor, get checked out. And if they find any problems, make sure you comply with the treatment. Cheers. |
dominique:Most people can never understand pro-euthanasia activists until they themselves have experienced seeing a loved one suffer endlessly from an incurable disease. Its a very difficult subject. And if care is not taken, changing the law could mean that a lot of old people are pressured into ending their lives when they don't really want to. There's no doubt that society should try and find a way to make this an option for those who need it. |
saddler:That is what the big bang theory is all about. There is plenty of scientific evidence that the universe arose from nothing about 14 billion years ago. There is no evidence that an invisible man in the sky was responsible for creating it. All the things in d world incluuding urself could not have happened by accident.Someone who existed b4 all these things must have created them $ u.don't u think the world would be unsafe without God.If we are to accept the opinion that there is no God,it means life is meaningless as there would be nobody that knows the mystery of man and the world. But because there is Å being called God who knows everything,we are rest assured that he created us for Å purpose best known to him $ he is d only one dat determine our existence.Abiogenesis is the study of the origin of life. Its is not yet fully established when or how the first molecule that could make copies of itself arose on earth but there are plenty of far more sensible explanations than "the man in the sky did it". In any case, once self-replicating molecules exist anywhere, spontaneous mutations and natural selection will inevitably lead to diversification and evolution. That is where you and me and all other living things on earth came from. We no longer need God to explain where new species come from. Its been demonstrated hundreds of times in the lab and in natural environments. The theory of evolution is possibly the best established theory in all of science. The proof is so overwhelming that you have to be willfully blind to deny it. You can see the stuff happening all around you. Have you ever heard of Chloroquine-resistant malaria? That's a product of evolution that happened within the last 20 years. Sickle-cell disease emerged as a protection against malaria just a few thousand years ago (People who are AS hardly get sick). Imagine how much a species could change in a hundred thousand years! Or a million? Like I said before, there's no need invoke God when there are far simpler explanations for everything. Occam's razor! |
This is a pointless argument. The fact is no amount of evidence, logic or explanation is enough to convince theists of their folly. "Faith is the evidence of things not seen" meaning anyone can just make something up and it will magically exist. No need for proof, it doesn't even need to make any sense. You should read about the Mormons and the Scientologists if you want to see how dumb faith and religion can make people. I'm seriously thinking of writing my own holy book just for fun. It'll be ten times better than the bible, with more wise parables and funnier stories. With the power of the internet, starting your own religion has never been easier. BTW, has anyone noticed that Martian has made exactly 666 posts? I always knew he was the antichrist! |
musKeeto:Derren Brown's Miracles for Sale was about healing ministers, not prosperity. The prosperity preachers have similar methods and the two areas often overlap but that doesn't mean they are the same. [/nitpick] Pretty much all pastors who have ever claimed to heal someone supernaturally are frauds. I've said before that there are only 2 types of pastors: those who know they are telling lies (frauds) and those who don't know (fools). Derren Brown is not the first to show that all the big TV pastor are crooks. There is a mountain of evidence on the internet for anyone genuinely interested in learning the truth. Unfortunately, no amount of proof will ever be enough to convince most people because "having faith" requires you to turn off your brain and abandon reason, rationality and common sense. People love the lie so much and want to stay in their fantasy world. In other words, religion makes people stu.pid. So don't think showing christians this video will convince them of anything. Someone once said if you make people think they are thinking, they will love you. Actually make them think and they will hate you. |
^^ Look at the title of this thread. It directly links HIV and promiscuity. I'll say again in case you didn't hear that HIV is not a moral issue and that using it to make moral judgements is seriously stu.pid. You can get offended if you like but the truth has to be told. You are actively promoting an ignorant and dangerous view and you need to be corrected. Attitudes like yours lead directly to innocent people dying. I know women with HIV who are so scared abut their mothers-in-law finding out that they refuse to take their drugs or protect their babies from the virus. I know a woman who drives from Lagos to an HIV clinic in Osun state every month because she's so scared of somebody recognising her. I know people who have refused treatment and died of AIDS because they didn't want their families to find out. I know sexually active young people who won't buy condoms because they don't want to be labelled as "bad boys/girls". These people aren't scared of being labelled as sick, they were scared of being labelled as promiscuous. An none of them are, most of the HIV positive people I've encountered are responsible married men and women, not pr0stitues, and not womanisers. The stigma surrounding HIV kills people. And you are killing people by promoting the stigma whether you know it or not. Ignorance is no excuse. akanke79:If you admit fault and change the title of the thread, I'll be happy to provide more information. Otherwise, You can go fuc.k yourself. Dealing with the sick and the dying has made lose my patience with your type. Cheers. |
Don't be retar.ded. HIV has very little to do with promiscuity. Its spread from mother to child, from husband to wife. Many people seem to have the (silly) impression that you have to visit a pr0stitute to get it. Except that most pr0stitutes and most promiscuous people use condoms because of pregnancy and AIDS. The people who tend to get HIV are the virgin types who don't know anything. I know lots of people who got it from their fiancées or long-term boy/girlfriends. Sometimes its sexually inexperienced young people who don't know that they need condoms or are too ashamed to buy them. HIV is not a moral issue, its a disease just like any other and to try and use it to make moral judgements is seriously stu.pid. To answer your question, HIV is more common in Africa because the virus most likely arose here. Probably somewhere in central or southern Africa where it probably spread slowly in the villages until it suddenly exploded in the 1940s or 1950s. The cause of the sudden rise in prevalence is thought to be rapid urbanization of previously rural areas. Of course, nobody noticed until the disease spread to America where any unexplained death is considered to be a big deal. Also Europeans almost always use condoms. That simple fact (plus their low prevalence rate) is what protects them. They advertise condoms openly and on TV. They have frank and comprehensive sex education in their schools including teaching young children how to use condoms. The truth is that you can sleep with as many people as you want and not get HIV as long as you use a condom every time. Unfortunately the born-again christians and born-again muslims are doing everything they can to stop Nigerian children form finding this out. They've banished most of the good condom adverts from radio and television and the have arm-twisted the government into promoting "abstinence first" (as if its possible to convince people not to have se.x) They keep talking about "moral standards" but they don't seem to mind that millions may die of a horrible disease thanks to their actions. As long as teenagers don't fuc.k. |
doctokwus:Sorry, but that's very misleading. While breastfeeding reduces the chances of conception its not really reliable enough unless you're doing it exclusively. If your baby is also on formula or if you don't breastfeed for long periods of the day (e.g. while at work) there's still a good chance you'll get pregnant. In any case, there's no reason why you should be depending on Postinor. Its for emergency contraception only (e.g. when a condom bursts) and not for regular use. If you don't want to get pregnant, you should ask your doctor/gynaecologist for family planning. He'll probably offer you the progestogen-only pill (aka the minipill) which is safe, effective and is very often given to nursing mothers. There are plenty of other options in case you decide you don't like it. Postinor has a high failure rate and can potentially mess up your menstrual cycle. Use it sparingly and only in emergencies. Cheers. |
I'm really disappointed that the WHO is helping to spread this stu.pid myth. Anyone who did physics in a good secondary school should be able to figure out that this is nonsense. Cell phones use very low energy electromagnetic (radio) waves. Visible light is exactly the same type of wave except at a much higher energy. So are infrared waves (eg. from your TV remote control). If you point your remote at your head the dose of radiation you'll get has 400,000 times more energy that that of your phone. Turn on a light bulb and its several million times more. The sun releases radiation at all frequencies including ultraviolet light which is a well known cause of cancer. Come the WHO isn't advising people to wear spacesuits outside? Just stand in the sun for five minutes and you'll get several times more radiation (the type that is actually dangerous) than you can get from a cell phone in a lifetime. In fact, you're more likely to get cancer from the phone's plastic case (most plastics slowly release carcinogenic chemicals). If you're worried about carcinogens maybe your should stop drinking out of plastic bottles first. |
Dr. Jack Kervorkian, the (in)famous american assisted suicide advocate has died of a kidney related ailment. He spent most of his life fighting for the rights of terminally ill people to end their own lives, was involved in over 130 assisted suicides and served 8 years in prison for murder as a result. Whether or not you agree with his methods no one can deny his good intentions. Let take a moment to honour a man who dedicated his life to lessening the suffering of severely ill people. Will someone please explain to me why he wasn't arrested on the floor of the house yesterday? Or last week, or last year? Or do legislators now have immunity or something? These EFCC people are useless clowns. Total cowards. Their eye-service knows no bounds. I wonder what they know now about Bankole that they didn't know yeaterday before the house session ended. The fear of sacred cows really is the beginning of wisdom. Farida Waziri should be flogged in public if this guy escapes. |
Crying and singing praise and worship on the house floor? How touching! Anyhow, these people should hurry up, pack their load and GTFO. And be careful not to let the door hit them on the ynash on the way. |
Don't worry. That money has helped 3 generations of hungry politicians put food on the table for their familes. That's money well spent if you ask me. |
BABE!:I wanna be your gynaecologist. Just kidding. You might want to reconsider. Ob/Gyn is a horrible, disgusting specialty, not for the weak of stomach. Plus no matter what they say, most women prefer male gynaecologists. It has to do with female rivalry or something, I don't know. The only thing I like about Ob/Gyn is that you get to play with a lot of babies and small children. And who doesn't like babies? |
M M M:Whatever you do, stay away from the Veyron. The spare parts are really expensive. |
evilspirit:I, a poor doctor, approve of this post. If I could go back, I would definitely be a lawyer. Their work is interesting, diverse and pays extremely well if you're a sharp guy. Plus they don't have to deal with blood, obnoxious patients, screaming children or the risk of gettin HIV. Nice username btw. |
If you'd like to read the bill yourself, you can download it here: http://eienigeria.org/Harmonised%20_FOI_Bill_2011.pdf |
The Freedom of Information Act has just been signed into law and surprisingly, it hasn't been weakened like many expected. Every Nigerian now has the power to demand for copies of almost all government documents from LG to federal level. This law has the power to shine light into some of the dark corners of government business and to expose many of the tricks used to steal our money. We can now find out how much our legislators are actually getting paid. You can examine the NNPC's accounts to see where all the money is going. You can study government contracts to compare prices of goods supplied to market prices (no more N800,000 laptops!). You can even find out what happened to the money for the new transformer that has failed to appear on your street. So here's a few of the documents I'd like to see:
[li]The final accident reports of all the plain crashes in Nigeria between 1992 and 2010.[/li] [li]The police and SSS reports on the Dele Giwa bombing.[/li] [li]A detailed accounting of the total expenditure of both arms of the national assembly including salaries, allowances and personal expenses.[/li] [li]A detailed list of all Presidency staff including names, titles, grade levels, salaries, and work descriptions. How many aides does GEJ actually have?[/li]
Can anybody think of others? Post yours in this thread. |
efisher:I just read the bill. Abike Dabiri was right, its actually better than the original version presented in 1999. It allows us to request practically all government documents with a few minor exceptions. Government agencies have to respond within 7 to 14 days of receiving the application and can actually get a year in prison for withholding information. It The exceptions are all pretty reasonable and all denied applications can be challenged in court. The court can even force the government to release documents covered by the exemptions if it's in the public interest. There's even a section protecting whistleblowers who leak evidence of corruption or incompetence whether or not the law allows them to. I don't often have anything good to say about the government but I have to admit that this is a pretty fantastic law. I'm surprised that the legislators actually passed this knowing what it could mean for their fat paychecks (the law specifically mentions salaries). Documents I would like to see: The final accident reports of all the plain crashes in Nigeria between 1992 and 2010. The police and SSS reports on the Dele Giwa bombing. A detailed accounting of the total expenditure of both arms of the national assembly including salaries, allowances and personal expenses. A detailed list of all Presidency staff including names titles, grade levels, salaries, and work descriptions. Can anybody think of others? |
Sen. Abike Dabiri says the new act is stronger than the bill that was presented in 1999. LAGOS, Nigeria — A senator who sponsored Nigeria’s first freedom of information bill says it could give citizens of Africa’s most populous nation access to public records for the first time.http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/nigeria-passes-freedom-of-information-bill-may-open-records-in-africas-most-populous-nation/2011/05/25/AGlVLJBH_story.html That's a very good sign because Ms. Dabiri is good people. I still want to read the bill though. |
It amazes me that this bill has been signed into law yet nobody knows what it contains. Not one single copy of the final bill on the internet. Even with my strong Google-fu, I cant find a single excerpt of the final text anywhere. Are the Nigerian press so useless that they can't keep us informed of what has been added or removed? Or is it that the politicians are deliberately trying to obfcuscate things so that they can doctor the bill in such a way that it doesn't interfere with their money siphoning activities? There's some serious irony here. And it shows how opaque the houses of assembly are. Nobody knows what they are doing, how much money they are collecting or where the money is going. |
ronkebp:I reading through the responses and laughing at how little most of you women understand men. Let me just save everybody some time and give you the koko. It is impossible to change a man's behavior by praying, begging, lecturing, nagging or b.itching. You can try witholding sex only if you want to get divorced quickly. The only effective way to make a man do what you want is to use positive reinforcement. That means giving rewards for good behavior rather than punishing bad. You act normally when he comes home drunk, but when he comes early and sober, you cook his favourite meal, sit on his lap and rub his belle. You bounce on his kini enthusiastically when he treats you well, maybe even give some oral pleasure. If he misbehaves, you lie there like a log of wood. Did I mention that you should never, ever withold s.ex? Anyway, positive reinforcement is the secret to a happy marriage. Forget all the nosense others have posted above. |
rebranded:I wonder. This whole thing is just a senseless waste if money. Couldn't Goodluck find a village clinic somewhere to build with all this money? Or have we finished feeding all the starving Nigerian children that we have so much cash to spare for inaugural banquets, presidential thanksgiving services and all the other retar.ded jamborees these people are doing? Nonsense. |
The best thing about BF3 is that it was designed originally for the PC and then ported down to the consoles. That means that unlike other games, its not limited by the 7 year old technology in the consoles. The PC version supports 64 man multiplayer multiplayer for instance while the maximum on consoles is 24. I'm tired of COD. The original Modern Warfare was a brilliant game but since then, they've completely stagnated. Bad Company 2 was head and shoulders above Black Ops in every way, so if Dice can continue improving and marketing their games they should be able to unseat COD as the top selling FPS series. |
